LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from Kim & Kylie

The holidays have a way of slowing us down just enough to notice all the little moments that make life so special, the glow of lights lining our streets, the sound of laughter echoing through family gatherings, and the feeling of connection that fills our hearts this time of year. For us, it’s the traditions that make the season meaningful. From cozy nights spent wrapping gifts and sipping cocoa to evenings out supporting our favorite local shops and holiday events, these rituals remind us what truly matters: community, gratitude, and togetherness.

We’re so excited to share our December issue with you! It’s filled with everything we love most about the holidays: heartwarming stories, beautiful homes, festive inspiration, and a celebration of the people and places that make our community shine. This issue truly captures the spirit of the season, and we hope it inspires you to create new memories and embrace the joy that’s all around.

Every month, we look forward to bringing you stories that reflect the heart of our city, but the December issue always feels a little extra special. It’s a time to pause, reflect, and say thank you for reading, supporting local, and being part of our City Lifestyle family.

Finding Peace in the Holiday Rush

Holistic Methods to Soothe worry and Find Joy This Holiday Season

The holidays are supposed to be filled with warmth and gratitude but for many, they also bring tension, burnout, and overwhelm. From jammed calendars to complicated family dynamics, this season can wear on mental and emotional health.

"Even the most joyous part of the year can stir up stress or sadness," says Danielle Gonzales, Reiki Master and business owner at The Grateful Koi in Peoria. "The energy around us this time of year is dense. With parties, expectations, and emotional memories, it's easy to lose touch with your center. The good news is peace is always an option available; we just need to return to it with intent."

Gonzales shares five methods to stay calm, centered, and present when the holiday season starts to become overwhelming.

1. GROUND AND CLEAR YOUR ENERGY

Do simple, daily routines like breathing a few deep breaths visualizing roots extending from your feet downward into the earth, or placing your hand on your chest to bodycheck yourself. Stepping outside for a few calm minutes in nature, standing barefoot in the grass, standing under a tree, or finding sunlight in your face, these are all quick fixes to reset your energy.

2. BREATHE, PRAY, AND BE STILL

Do some Box Breathing. That is four seconds for breathing in, four to hold, four to breathe out, and four to rest. In minutes, it calms the nervous system and stills the mind. Pairing breathwork with prayer or meditation can deepen that sense of calmness. Listening to soothing sound frequencies, gentle music, or guided meditations can also quiet the mind and lift the spirit when the holidays feel noisy or overstimulating.

3. SAY WHAT YOU FEEL

Try "conscious complaining.” That means spending a few minutes complaining privately and authentically. "The goal is not to think about the negative," Gonzales explains. "It's to let it move through you. When that feeling is acknowledged, you can generally let go of relief and clarity in a flash."

4. PROTECT YOUR ENERGY AND SET BOUNDARIES

For some, social engagements and family gatherings can be emotional overload.  Gonzales suggests it could be as simple as saying no to one more event, having quiet breaks alone, or setting limits around draining conversations. She also recommends a simple visualization: "Picture yourself surrounded by a bright, golden light, your own peace cocoon. This energy allows love and joy in and keeps stressful negativity out. Done every day, it maintains your balance and center."

5. CULTIVATE GRATITUDE AND RENEWAL

Start each day writing down three things you are grateful for, however small they are. Gratitude mellows the heart and brings you back to the present, where there is peace.

While holistic treatments may ease anxiety and support emotional balance, Gonzales says that they're best used in combination with professional care. "Energy work and therapy complement each other well," she says. "One helps the mind to process and reframe, while the other helps the body and spirit release."

And when you find yourself tired and stressed at this time of year, Gonzales has one gentle reminder: "You don't have to do more, you just have to come back to yourself. Slow down, breathe, and let gratitude lead. Peace isn't discovered in the perfect getaway; it's discovered in presence."

that’s a WRAP

DIY Gift Wrapping That Stands Out During

The Season

‘Tis the season to get crafty, clever or characterized! Wellwrapped holiday packages create immediate enthusiasm and somehow seem to make gifts more meaningful. Whether going for shiny, vintage, colorful, rustic, playful or eco-friendly impressions, the following are some Do-It-Yourself gift-wrapping ideas to make the wrapping process even more satisfying. Simply applying jute twine to gifts provides a ‘less is more’ vibe.

ADD NATURAL TOUCHES TO CRAFT PAPER:

For gifts with a rustic, organic feel, use seasonal accents, such as sprigs, pine cones and cinnamon sticks, tied up with twine, encircling recycled paper for the wrapping.

FIRST INITIAL DECORATION:

In lieu of a gift tag, attach an oversized paper mâché letter of the recipient’s first initial to the top of the box. The letter then can serve as customized décor, too.

POLKA DOTS:

Wrap gifts in plain craft paper and then cut out big, multicolored polka dots to glue down. It’s hard not to smile at big, bright dots.

CARDBOARD BOX SNOWPERSON:

Wrap three or four boxes in white paper, with different gifts inside, and then stack them. Tape the boxes together,

the SEASON

tapering to the top. Glue buttons on the bottom ones, create a snowperson’s face on the top one, with carrot nose cut out of orange paper. Attach a real hat, if desired. Tie wider, festive bow around the snowperson’s ‘neck.’ Add a real corncob pipe for a bonus finishing touch, if preferred.

MINI TREE GIFT WRAPPING:

Pine needles and small tips of real tree branches make quick and easy mini Christmas trees that can be glued onto Christmas gifts. They will smell nice, too.

BOOK PAGE WRAPPING PAPER:

Repurpose old book pages by cutting out

shapes of dreidels, snowflakes, ornaments, candles or reindeer to paste on gifts.

DIY STAMP WRAPPING PAPER:

Wrap gifts in solid colors of paper. Secure ink stamps and an ink pad in a themed color(s), and stamp the paper as much or as little as desired.

UNBOXED:

Apply other types of containers, rather than boxes or bags, for gift wrapping; examples:  canisters, pillow cases, baskets, fabric scraps, maps, glass containers, towels, blankets, scarves, Bento bags (also called triangle bags or origami bags).

Winter Simmer

Magic

FILL YOUR HOME WITH THE COZY SCENTS OF TART CRANBERRIES, BRIGHT CITRUS, AND WARMING SPICES

Creating stovetop potpourri is a delightful way to indulge in the scents of the festive season. This Cranberry Orange Potpourri combines sparkling notes of fresh citrus and cranberries with nostalgic spices and woodsy herbs to create a welcoming atmosphere.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 cup fresh cranberries

• 1 orange, sliced

• 2 cinnamon sticks

• 1 teaspoon whole cloves

• 3 star anise

• 2 sprigs fresh rosemary

• 2-3 cups water (plus more as needed)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Combine cranberries, sliced orange, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and rosemary in a pot. Add 2-3 cups of water, ensuring the ingredients are submerged. Simmer on low heat, allowing the aromas to release. Check the water level, adding more as needed to prevent drying out. Simmer for several hours to fill your home with the scents of the season.

This potpourri is perfect for setting the holiday mood, whether you’re preparing for a family gathering or simply want your home to smell warm and inviting.

HOLIDAY MAGIC

Signatures Boutique Celebrates the Season with Gifts and Giving

A neighborhood classic born in northern Glendale’s Arrowhead Ranch, Signatures has been a beloved part of the community for nearly three decades. What began as a dream for Arizona native Wendy Schuff Byrne has become an award-winning boutique that continues to capture hearts and support.

"I opened Signatures in 1997, and we just celebrated our 28th year at the same location," says Wendy, who runs the store at 20211 N. 67th Avenue, Glendale. "It's been such a blessing to be able to serve this community all these years.”

That family atmosphere is long-standing for Wendy. She is a proud wife of Barry Byrne, mom of five and grandma of 11, and her twelfth grandbaby is on the way, due in January. "If it weren't for our wonderful customers, we wouldn't be here today," she shares. "They're the ones who've allowed us to grow and expand."

CONTINUED >

When Wendy first opened Signatures, the boutique specialized in stationery, invitations, and cards. Over the years, it has evolved into much more. Now, it’s specialty gift store offering jewelry, candles, bath products, home décor, baby items, and other treasures.

Signatures carries top jewelry lines such as Brighton, Kendra Scott, Enewton, Waxing Poetic, and its newest addition, Julie Vos. For shoppers looking for all sorts of gifts, they will also find popular plush animals by Jellycat, stylish baby clothing, and a good selection of wedding, bridal shower, and inspirational gifts. "We're proud to have something for everyone, from crosses and angels to stylish gifts that celebrate where we live," she says.

It's no surprise Signatures has been Phoenix Magazine's "Best Place to Buy Gifts in the Valley" six years in a row. She attributes much of that success to the people who are helping to make the store what it is. "Signatures isn't all about me, it's about these incredible people who work here," she says. “We’re a close team, and everyone plays a part in making Signatures the warm, welcoming place we are known for.”

Among that dedicated team is Bibian Nau, who has been with Wendy for more than 25 years. “Bibian has been with me nearly since the beginning,” Byrne shares. “She’s family and a true example of what makes our team so special. We’ve been blessed with the most talented, caring group of women who pour their hearts

into this store every day.” It isn’t just Bibian who helps to make the store what it is, Wendy shares that all the success and wins go to her other staff as well including Kim, Elizabeth, Chris, Kristen, Karen, and Avery.

At holiday time, the staff's attention to detail is one of the best showcases of our love and experience. "We close down for a week every year to set up our Christmas Extravaganza," describes Wendy. "It's our favorite part of the year when the store is transformed into a winter wonderland!”

The hottest trend of the season this year? Bows, lots and lots of bows. "Bows are everywhere and on everything this holiday," Wendy explains. "We even have a velvet Christmas tree that's entirely comprised of plush bows."

Of course, traditional red and green ornaments are timeless, but Wendy also loves to mix in a little fun. “We’ve added plenty of pink and sparkle this year. We have spa themes, handbags, even a pink G-Wagon for the girl who has everything,” she shares.

When decorating, Wendy encourages shoppers to get creative. "Don't be afraid to mix textures and colors," she says. "Velvet bows, metallic ribbons, and layered ornaments can be just what you need to add depth and warmth to your tree. And we always recommend you add something personal, such as a keepsake ornament as a special reminder of this holiday season."

Guests can also anticipate some seasonally new features at Signatures this year. "We designed new gift bags," Wendy continues. "Every gift that leaves our store is wrapped in a Signature gift bag with tissue, ready to be presented to someone special." In store, guests will find a giant version of a new green-andwhite striped Christmas gift bag, complete with a red bow, perfect for holiday photos.

For many, visiting Signatures has become a cherished tradition. “Some of our customers have been shopping with us for decades,” Wendy says. “We’ve printed their baby announcements and their wedding invitations. Now, as Signatures celebrates 28 years, Wendy is more passionate than ever. "We've always aimed to show the best of the best with beautiful gifts, personal service, and genuine caring," she says. "It's not just shopping; it's relationships and connecting with people. When you walk into our store, you're family."

Signatures is open Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; and Sundays in December, 12–4 p.m. They can be found on Facebook at Signatures Gifts, on Instagram at @shopsignatures, or online at shopsignatures.com.
