Hungry Like the Wolf

Thirsty for a little basketball? The foursome on our cover (hello, SHAQ!) says it all. As the NBA season heats up, these legends are talking hoops, life, and their ties to Arizona... and we’re giving you the story behind how they ended up sharing our cover.

This issue also marks a major moment for Valley dining. Lisa Vanderpump is officially expanding her empire into AZ with her glamorous new restaurant, WOLF. In these pages, you’ll learn the personal inspiration behind its name.

And then there’s Chef Beau MacMillan. My oldest son is glued to the Food Network, and Beau is the guy he cheers for most. I’m lucky to call him a friend, and I’m thrilled to spotlight him in this issue as he brings back Bar Brawl- a high-energy celebration uniting some of the Valley’s most talented mixologists.

When I reflect on food and drink, I’ll admit: I’m not the savviest in the kitchen. But food has never been about perfection- it’s about connection. In our house, the kitchen table is sacred. It’s where we gather, share the highs and lows of the day, put the phones down, and simply be. Of course, we also love the Valley’s incredible restaurants, because sometimes, good food, great drinks, and no doing dishes is the ultimate luxury.

October is also Down Syndrome Awareness Month, and growing up with a developmentally disabled aunt, inclusivity and compassion was instilled in my heart and soul. That’s why I’m honored to share the story of Miss America Emma Broyles. Her platform and her passion stem from her bond with her brother, and she’s a shining example of what it means to lead with empathy. (And yes, rumor has it her boyfriend is someone you may recognize from the big leagues.)

And here’s a little bonus I must mention: this issue also has one of the neatest stories we’ve ever told. It’s about someone who rarely shares his journeythe man behind the Gorilla mask for 30+ years. He was the Suns gorilla who redefined mascots and changed the game forever. It’s seriously one of the most fascinating stories we’ve published to date.

There’s so much more in these pages, from features that will make you hungry to stories that inspire. So grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this issue cover to cover. Because after all… it is our Food & Drink Issue. Cheers!

Fueling Your Heart, Beyond the Basics

I’m Dr. Rahul Sharma, and I’ve seen firsthand that heart disease isn’t just about clogged arteries- it’s about how everyday habits quietly shape risk. Nutrition, in particular, is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Here’s what many people overlook:

• Blood sugar spikes from processed carbs inflame vessels, even in people without diabetes. Pairing carbs with protein or healthy fat protects the arteries.

• Micronutrients matter. Magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens or pumpkin seeds support heart rhythm stability.

• Timing counts. Late-night heavy meals can disrupt sleep and raise nighttime blood pressure, adding long-term strain.

Here are a few small changes with big impact:

• Swap processed snacks for nuts or seeds. They’re rich in magnesium and healthy fats that support circulation.

• Add color to your plate- berries, peppers, & greens are packed with antioxidants that help repair vessel damage.

• Rethink protein; fish rich in omega-3s can lower arrhythmia risk and calm inflammation.

Food isn’t the enemy of heart disease... it’s one of the most powerful medicines we have.

VANDERPUMP RULES SCOTTSDALE

OUR Q&A WITH LISA VANDERPUMP AS SHE BRINGS WOLF TO THE VALLEY

When Lisa Vanderpump sets her sights on something, it’s never ordinary... it’s extravagant, theatrical, and dripping in elegance. From her reign on TV to her empire in hospitality and philanthropy, she has built a reputation for turning restaurants into experiences, cocktails into art, and parties into cultural touchpoints. Now, she’s bringing her signature magic to the desert with Wolf by Vanderpump at Caesars Republic Scottsdale.

The name itself is powerful, primal, and irresistible- just like its creator. We connected with Lisa to talk all things WOLF: the story behind the name, the design secrets, the decadent cocktails, and what guests can expect when they step inside her newest kingdom.

WHAT DREW YOU TO SCOTTSDALE?

LV: “We’ve developed an incredibly close working relationship with Caesars Entertainment, so when they launched Caesars Republic with HCW in Scottsdale, we were immediately intrigued! After spending time in the beautiful city of Scottsdale, I noticed a youthful energy; it’s a vibrant destination and it felt like a really natural fit for a Vanderpump Bar and Restaurant. The hotel is also gorgeous also had the mascot of a female WOLF, which felt a bit like kismet!”

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME WOLF?

LV: “WOLF is a family name and my grandson Teddy’s middle name! The WOLF is strong, powerful and bold, and the design of our Lake Tahoe location came to life in my mind soon after he was born. We wanted to create something that really felt indigenous to the Lake Tahoe area and Wolf was the perfect name.”

CAN YOU GIVE US A TASTE OF WHAT GUESTS CAN EXPECT FROM THE WOLF EXPERIENCE?

LV: “WOLF Scottsdale is going to be something bold, strong, sexy and unique. Similar to its sister location in Lake Tahoe, WOLF will be an epic statement from the moment you walk through its doors. We will infuse the signature design with elements that are specific to the Scottsdale area, and the immense, graphic background of the desert and mountains will be sure to make for some stunning visuals.”

WILL WE SEE A SIGNATURE LISA VANDERPUMP COCKTAIL ON THE MENU?

LV: “Our cocktail menus are extensive, and yes, there are absolutely some of my favorites! We will definitely feature my signature drinks like the Giggy Tonic! Our cocktail programs always have the experience begin with your eyes, even before you take a sip, so expect stunning glassware and innovative garnishes… followed by some decadent flavors!”

HOW INVOLVED WERE YOU IN THE CONCEPT, DECOR, AND MENU?

LV: “For all of our locations, I dream up the design and the concept, and then work with my design partner Nick Alain to fully conceptualize the décor and layout. Vanderpump Alain is a 50-50 partnership and we work closely together to create things that are unique and bespoke. Every element of our restaurants from the lighting to the tables to the trees are made in our factories; everything is custom and unique. As far as the cocktail and food menus, I work closely with my daughter Pandora to create things that are very specific to each of our themes.”

WOLF IS YOUR FIRST CONCEPT OUTSIDE CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA… DOES THIS FEEL LIKE THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA?

LV: “This year does feel like a bit of a new era, branching out into Scottsdale and opening The Vanderpump Hotel in Vegas!”

YOU’VE LAUNCHED MORE RESTAURANTS THAN MOST PEOPLE HAVE HAD DINNER DATES. WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT HOSPITALITY?

LV: “If you tune into any of my television shows, you’ll know I am constantly surprised on a daily basis! Just when you think you know it all, people surprise you. I always say that we’ve seen everything, but I’ve been used to them leaving and going to bed after they see us… now with opening the hotel, they’re going to be sleeping with us too! So I am sure I’m going to experience a whole new level of surprise soon!”

FROM VANDERPUMP DOGS TO WOLF, HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH PROJECTS FEEL RIGHT?

LV: “To me, it’s all about authenticity. I have come to a point in my life where I don’t want to work on something I am not passionate about, so if it doesn’t feel like something I want to devote my time to, we won’t do it. Our family business is just that- run by family- there are only 4 of us working on our projects... no assistants, no employees, so if we aren’t passionate about it, we just won’t do it. However, opportunity is a huge factor as well, and I am so appreciative of our relationship with Caesars Entertainment.”

YOU’VE HOSTED SOME OF THE MOST OUTRAGEOUS BRAVO DINNER PARTIES. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO KEEPING THINGS ELEGANT WHEN THE TABLE’S ON FIRE?

LV: “Well, nothing will save some of those Housewives dinners! But in general, I think the host of an event needs to keep a cool head, and always be prepared for things to go wrong. Have a few conversation starters that can effortlessly change the tide of a conversation; be prepared to pull some hotheads to the kitchen to ‘help you clean up or make a cocktail;’ and if everything looks like it’s actually falling apart… run! But there are a few subjects best to avoid at dinner: politics, religion, and other people’s children.”

WILL WOLF HAVE ANY HIDDEN MENU ITEMS FOR DIEHARD FANS?

LV: “You know our restaurants always have a few tidbits that will satisfy your Vanderpump cravings! You’ll be sure to find our Signature Goat Cheese Balls! In every restaurant, we endeavor to put things on that are irresistible; our pull apart bread at Wolf, our truffle baguette at Paris…”

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE INDULGENCE THAT YOU NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR?

LV: “Chocolate. There’s nothing I love more than chocolate!”

YOU’VE BUILT EMPIRES IN HOSPITALITY, TELEVISION, AND PHILANTHROPY. WHAT’S GROUNDED YOU THROUGH ALL OF IT?

LV: “Probably the hospitality industry itself, my work ethic, and my family. It’s hard to have an ego when you’re on a construction site or sitting next to a table critiquing the experience at your restaurant. And no matter how successful our brands have been, we are up at 6am every day back to work to see what we can do to make them better. And, my family is English... with the inherent English sarcasm… so they’ll take you down a peg or two! My husband – he always tells me, hey, settle down, when I get carried away.”

BACKSTAGE. BACKSTORY. STRAIGHT GAME.

BASKETBALL IS BACK

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BARRET ELENGOLD, SCOTTSDALE EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY

Straight Game Podcast recently took over Gila River Casino with a live show that featured Shaq, and now the crew is gearing up for a return to Arizona this October with another massive guest.

Produced by Cascene Gibson, the podcast didn’t just appear out of nowhere.

before carving out an NBA career that spanned 11 years and 14 teams, capped with a Celtics championship ring.

Ty Ellis, who played internationally, had a stint as an assistant coach with the Suns and now works with USA Basketball and the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces.

“THESE GUYS HAVE LOCKER ROOM CONFESSIONS, PLAYOFF SCARS, COACHING PHILOSOPHIES, AND BEHIND-THE-SCENES MOMENTS.”

It grew out of Cascene’s years in sports broadcasting and a chance connection with Mike Bibby, and it thrives because of its Arizona roots.

Bibby is AZ basketball royalty, born and raised in Phoenix, a Shadow Mountain High School star, and the guard who led the University of Arizona to a national championship in 1997.

“He is a god in Sacramento and a legend in Arizona as well,” Cascene says.

Eddie House cemented his name at ASU with a 61-point game against Cal

Together, they’re a lineup of perspectives: the star, the journeyman, and the coach; three voices tied to the Valley in different ways, under the leadership of Cascene.

Cascene built his career in TV production, running shows in Seattle and San Francisco before producing pre- and post-game coverage for NBC Sports Bay Area... a role that eventually connected him with Bibby.

“Mike didn’t know anybody in San Francisco, so I took him out to dinner.

We  vibed, and a few days later he said, ‘I’m working on putting a podcast together. You should be the producer.’” ...It was the spark for Straight Game.

From the jump, Cascene knew they couldn’t just rely on celebrity guests.

“These guys have a ton of stories... locker room confessions, playoff scars, coaching philosophies, and behindthe-scenes moments; that’s what sets Straight Game apart.”

One of the biggest stories to come out so far? Bibby’s perspective on the infamous 2002 Western Conference Finals.

“Mike says that when the NBA wants a certain outcome for a game, they bring in a certain referee team,” Cascene says. “He points to game six… Mike got elbowed in his face by Kobe Bryant... it was a bad one... and they called a defensive foul on Mike, but it was Kobe that elbowed him.” Cascene adds: “We had Chris Webber on our episode and he backed it up. And then we had Bobby Jackson on and he backed it up. Agree or don’t... that’s Straight Game.”

When Shaq joined the live show, the moment validated everything.

“Shaq is the nicest guy,” Cascene says. “Anytime you get someone that can answer questions easily and can paint a picture and then tell a story behind whatever their answer is, you’re going to get gold.”

Shaq shared stories about playing alongside Kobe and didn’t shy away from the GOAT debate.

“He said his top five centers were Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, and Hakeem Olajuwon, but he left himself off the list,” Cascene recalls. “Then he said, ‘But if the crowd isn’t here, I’m the number one type guy.’”

More importantly, Shaq pushed Kobe’s legacy forward: “He said people can form their own opinion on who they think is number one, but if Kobe’s not in the conversation, then he has a problem with that.”

And Shaq’s connection to the Valley runs deeper than one night on stage; he once called Paradise Valley home. When Bibby took over as head coach at Sacramento State, he recruited Shaq’s son and later tapped Shaq as the program’s GM.

CLOSING LOANS.

“Austin

“PEOPLE WANT THE

INSIDE...

THESE GUYS GIVE IT.”

“It’s a bond that made their Arizona appearance feel all the more special,” says Cascene.

For Cascene, those revelations are what makes the long hours worth it.

“We’re not scripted. We’re sticking in our lane of trips down memory lane.”

That can mean Eddie House breaking down what it’s like to live life on wheels as a journeyman, Ty Ellis pulling back the curtain on coaching culture, or Bibby confessing the mental toll of certain playoff series.

“People want the inside... And these guys give it.”

Arizona is more than a backdrop, it’s the heartbeat. House is ASU forever. Ellis coached here. Bibby grew up here, made history here, and still represents Phoenix.

“That’s why Straight Game is bringing it home again in October, with another guest ready to drop stories you won’t get anywhere else.”

In the Valley, that means one thing... expect another backstage pass, another backstory, and another night where AZ gets the first listen.

1:1 WITH BIBBY, EDDIE AND TY

WE SENT OUR YOUNG PVCL SPORTS REPORTER BACKSTAGE TO CATCH UP WITH THE HOSTS OF THE STRAIGHT GAME PODCAST.

ARTICLE BY SPORTS WITH ZAZA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BARRET ELENGOLD, SCOTTSDALE EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY

1:1 WITH MIKE BIBBY

ZAZA: CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING INDUCTED INTO THE ARIZONA HALL OF FAME!

MB: Thank you. It means so much to be in the record books. I’m happy and blessed.

ZAZA: IS THERE ONE MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER THAT STANDS OUT?

MB: Getting drafted to the Grizzlies when they were in Vancouver... a long time ago. The best time of my life.

ZAZA: TALK ABOUT THE WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS GOING UP AGAINST SHAQ.

MB: Yeah, we should have won. When we had him on our podcast, it was the first time we talked about it…

ZAZA: WHAT ABOUT TODAY… YOU VERSUS SHAQ NOW?

MB: He’s a little old and rusty. I don’t think he could get out on the floor and guard me, but he’d probably be able to back me down… so it’s a double-edged sword.

ZAZA: I KNOW YOU’VE GOT A BIG SHOE COLLECTION. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PAIR TO WEAR?

MB: I like the Jordan 11s. All black; I think the Cap and Gowns.

ZAZA: WHO WAS YOUR IDOL GROWING UP?

MB: Surely Michael Jordan, but my favorite basketball player growing up was Jason Kidd. I was in eighth grade, and I remember he was the high school player of the year featured on the front of the newspaper. When my brother saw the paper, he told me I resembled Jason, so I took a liking to him.

ZAZA: AS A KID, WHAT TEAM DID YOU WANT TO BE DRAFTED BY?

MB: Didn’t matter... I just wanted to play. I would have liked to play home for the Phoenix Suns, but it didn’t work out. There are surely pluses and minuses that come with playing at home… kind of glad I didn’t. But there was a potential trade going down with me and Nash early on because he was from Vancouver and I was from Phoenix, so it was going to be a swap. But they ended up not doing it.

ZAZA: HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING IN ARIZONA?

MB: Arizona will always be my home, no matter what happens.

Za & Bibby

1:1 WITH EDDIE HOUSE

ZAZA: YOU PLAYED FOR ASU AND DROPPED 61 POINTS IN A GAME. INSANE. HOW DID THAT FEEL?

EH: That’s the game that got me drafted, to be honest with you. And I never liked Cal because they didn’t give me a letter.

ZAZA: FAVORITE CAREER HIGHLIGHT?

EH: The championship on the Boston Celtics… it was like a one-off. I never had another opportunity to win one.

ZAZA: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY WITH THE SUNS?

EH: Besides winning the championship with the Celtics, the Suns were the most fun I ever had with a team. Everybody was cool with each other. Just being around those guys and sharing that season was one of my favorite experiences ever.

ZAZA: I’M 10. WHEN YOU WERE 10, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

EH:  I thought I was going to be Rickey Henderson, a baseball player. I played left field and pitched. But then my father told me, ‘We don’t have money for college, you’ll need a scholarship.’ The easiest path was basketball, because I could work on my game alone. Baseball needs other people, but basketball... you can go to the park, imagine whatever you want, and just work. That’s why I switched.

ZAZA: HOW ABOUT THE PODCAST?

EH: We’re able to share knowledge, swap stories, and have fun. I love doing it, and love the guys.

ZAZA: THANK YOU, EDDIE! GO DEVILS.

EH: Go Devils.

IG @_ehouse50_

Za & Eddie

ELLIS

ZAZA: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE COACHING MOMENT?

TE: Probably winning a gold medal with USA Basketball. My head coach was Jeff Van Gundy, and we won the gold medal in the AmeriCup. Super cool.

ZAZA: WHEN YOU WERE A KID, DID YOU ALWAYS THINK YOU WERE GOING TO BE A COACH?

TY: I actually just wanted to inspire people, if that sounds crazy. I grew up stuttering so bad that I couldn’t really talk. I had people who poured into me and believed in me, and always wanted to do the same for others.

ZAZA: TIPS FOR COACHES?

TE: Leadership is everything. You’ve got to be confident, not be afraid to make mistakes, and trust your gut.

ZAZA: TELL ME ABOUT THE LAS VEGAS ACES. IS IT DIFFERENT COACHING MEN AND WOMEN?

TE: I’m currently an assistant coach and they’re a really good team. Coaching women is 1,000% easier. With men, you have to coach their ego; they’re hardheaded and fragile mentally, to be honest with you. But women… they care about small details. They find pleasure in being coached and taught.

ZAZA: WHO’S A FAVORITE PLAYER YOU’VE COACHED?

TE: A’ja Wilson on the women’s side. She’s a phenomenal ambassador for women’s basketball and can really hoop.

ZAZA: HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE A LOSS?

TE: When it’s over, it’s over. I don’t bring it home. You just pursue greatness, work harder, and try again.

ZAZA: AS A COACH, WHAT DO YOU ADD TO THE PODCAST?

TE: Well, I played basketball too. I wasn’t an NBA star, but I had a good time playing in Europe (the country of Georgia). From a coaching and leadership background however, I help navigate these guys. They’ve done exceptionally well in the NBA, and I bring that European swag. We have good debates on what’s better and who’s better. Obviously the Americans are the best, but I think the country of Georgia guys are right behind them.

MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE GORILLA MASK FOR 30+ YEARS

THE MOST FAMOUS PHOENICIAN YOU NEVER KNEW…

What if I told you Michael Jordan asked for his autograph or that he went on an international tour with Magic Johnson? Your first guess probably wouldn’t be the Phoenix Suns Gorilla and certainly not, Bob Woolf.

Bob was the man inside the suit and behind the persona, pranks, stunts and schtick that lit up the NBA for 34 years. He wore the suit for the last time in 2021... ironically the first time his real name lit up Phoenix Arena at his retirement celebration.

“It was emotional because it was the end of something he had done for more than half my life,” Bob’s wife Malarie shares. “The finals championship was on the line, too.”

“It didn’t end in a championship, but that’s okay, I’m not bitter,” Bob adds with a laugh. I sat down with Bob and his wife Malarie to peel back the layers of his illustrious career as the Gorilla. And like a banana, the genuinely sweet stuff is what you didn’t see from the outside. Suns games were just 25% of his job; the rest was community work and philanthropythe part Bob loved most.

Our friendship dates back nearly 40 years to our college days. Bob was a gymnast; Mal and I, ASU cheerleaders. I was also a bridesmaid at their fireworks-studded wedding at Gainey Ranch 30 years ago.

With a front row seat behind the curtain, I’ve wanted to tell this story since I became a journalist. Bob wasn’t just a clown (though he did a stint at Clown College)- he was the mastermind, the way Taylor Swift is to today’s music industry.

Everything you saw and heard, from the Evil Kneivel-style motorcycle jump at center court to Billy Idol’s “Money, Money” anthem underscoring the Gorilla’s groundbreaking “flip-dunk” off the trampoline, were all machinations of Bob’s mind. They were also all firsts.

He was the first to bungee jump, ascend or rappel in an arena, or pull a “Tarzan” and swing across the length of Chase Field… more than 240 feet up. He was also notably the first in the NBA to be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame.  And when his age and injuries started to catch up with him, he created the first NBA Dunk Team to take some pressure off his own body.

I can also tell you what he wasn’t.

He wasn’t someone who sought celebrity status. He loved the anonymity of the mask. He wasn’t starstruck (except for Al McCoy), and he wasn’t your average scene-stealer.  He was the scene… and often built it; constructing his own ramps and props into the wee hours of the night throughout his career.

“I’d go to bed and there would be a pile of wood in the garage. I’d wake up to find the Empire State Building,” says Mal.

The 25-foot Empire State replica was shipped to New York in four pieces for an NBA All-Star Game, where the Gorilla triumphantly climbed to the top mimicking the iconic movie scene. But in true Bob fashion, he took it to the next level dunking a basketball off it, bringing the crowd- including NBA Commissioner David Stern- to their feet. King Kong’s got nothing on Bob.

“It was kind of the talk of the game,” says Bob (proudly).

It was emblematic of the lengths he’d go for just a two-minute timeout, or to create one unforgettable moment. A mindset he carried from the very beginning, starting with his audition for the job back in July 1988.

“Boom! I busted through the back doors and I slid onto center court on my belly,” he shares with a grin. “I got into a handstand, put my hands in some shoes, and I did a moonwalk upside down, then backwards.”

It didn’t stop there.

Bob then jumped up onto the basketball hoop and stood up on the rim, pounding his chest, pointing down at the judges before flipping off onto the mat. To say he stuck the landing is an understatement.

The Suns later admitted it was that final move that clinched the job, though his quiet shyness in the sit-down interview nearly cost him the opportunity.

That timidity was something his parents, Ray and Marg Woolf, worried about when he was growing up in Great Falls, Montana. He preferred to spend hours in the basement working on quirky tricks… like spinning a basketball on one finger.

“I could rollerblade, rollerskate, skateboard, juggle. I did all these random things that didn’t add up to anything,” Bob says.

Then his mom put him in gymnastics because he was literally “climbing the walls” and that changed everything.

“Gymnastics was the vehicle,” Bob says, that carried him to State Championships, ASU and ultimately, the Phoenix Suns.

Bob’s mom was thrilled when he got the job as the Gorilla. His dad, an Air Force Fighter Pilot mechanic, was less enthused.

“He always wanted me in a suit and tie in the corporate world,” says Bob.

Well, truth be told, he did end up in a suit.

“I’m a true Gemini and there are two different parts of me.” Bob explains. “There’s that reserved guy, and then there’s the gorilla that pulled out the wild child inside me.”

Bob was a rare blend of athleticism and comedic genius, and for stunts like the one that stole the show at the 1998 All-Star Game, he calls it nothing more than “engineering and stupidity.” With a custom-built air ram, he catapulted himself from the three-point line to deliver a dunk that brought the house down.

CONTINUED >

Bob and Mal Woolf

“I wanted to be the first mascot to do it from the three-point line… ever.”

And when his crew set up the equipment beyond the arc, the whole place went eerily quiet. They knew they were about to witness something special.

“Everyone was paying attention on both sides; no one was paying attention to the coaches… not even the coaches,” Mal adds.

Then, Bob says, “I take the ball and thank God… nailed the first one! And the room erupted.”

It was one of countless Gorilla antics that etched history and routinely landed on SportsCenter’s “Play of the Day;” the flagship highlight reel of the ’80s and ’90s, which Bob often considered his report card.

None of these feats happened by accident, and Bob couldn’t have found a better partner than in Mal to green-light his often-outrageous ideas.

“I never worried because I knew how many hours of training and practice he put in” Mal says.

…Like when Bob teamed up with firefighters to master rappelling, or with circus performers and stunt coordinators to bring whatever wild idea he dreamed up to life.

There were also stunts and jokes that didn’t quite land. For example, the time a hot air balloon was supposed to drop him into a baseball stadium.

“It wasn’t a stunt… it was a (funny) fiasco.”

Few realize the Gorilla also performed at minor league games, like the time in Eugene, Oregon, when a hot-air balloon stunt went wrong and Bob dangled from a rope for nearly two miles before landing.

There was also the time the Gorilla poked fun at Oliver Miller’s weight gain- an old teammate and friend- before later issuing a public apology.

“I fell on the sword for that one,” acknowledging his skits generally got pre-approval. Sadly, Miller passed away earlier this year.

To Bob, the Gorilla was always an equal-opportunity prankster, never one to be intimidated… even by Hollywood royalty.

At a 2006 Clippers game, he wandered into a certain actress’s section to bang his drum and rally the defense, just as he always did. Instead of playing along, she unleashed a string of profanities and ordered him to leave. So, the Gorilla did.

“I let her think she won,” Bob chuckles. “But I came back five minutes later with a bigger drum.”

After the game, back out of costume, a well-meaning security guard introduced Bob to the actress: ‘This is Bob Woolf- he’s the Phoenix Suns Gorilla.’ Bob says  as she promptly punched him in the face. He never pressed charges, but she was banned from the arena. And in true Gorilla fashion, Bob joked that he wanted to be the one to serve her the papers, though management vetoed that idea.

When asked what he kept from all those years as the Gorilla, Bob doesn’t hesitate: the original jersey. Not only did he design it himself, but it ultimately led to the career he has today.

Now, he’s back in the mascot game with Big Time Jerseys, working alongside the very woman who helped customize that jersey decades ago. Bob calls Patsy Elmer ‘a legend in her own industry;’ a seamstress to Shohei Ohtani, Wayne Gretzky, the Dodgers, and the Arizona Cardinals. Together, they’re launching a new division, with Bob serving as Director of Mascots and Promotions, right here in the Valley.

Beyond his latest endeavor, Bob focuses on his three grown kids: Peyton, set to make her movie debut in 2026; Zach, now working in Events Marketing at Phoenix Arena where he grew up watching his dad; and Mayson, pursuing a Physician Assistant career at Creighton (perhaps inspired by the many doctors Bob kept on speed dial).

They say they were all blown away by their dad’s retirement send-off, having no idea the lasting impact he made on the sport or the people around him. They just knew he had a cool job.

Four years later, Bob still can’t fight off tears when he talks about it.

“I’ve had many cool moments in my life… it gets me emotional. When all those people came to one room for me, it was big.”

Bob had earned the adoration of strangers and friends alike who knew him as the Gorilla, as Bob and as both.  And as one of those people, I can say without hesitation, he is the best of both worlds.

Bob wasn’t just ‘The Michael Jordan of Mascots,’ as ESPN called him; he transformed sports entertainment itself. Had it been any other man, the industry would look very different today. Even his smaller innovations, like the t-shirt cannon, remain staples in arenas nationwide.

The boy from a Montana basement stepped into the spotlight at 23 and didn’t leave it until 57. Even his father, once skeptical, came to see it… telling him later in his career: “That suit is better than any corporate suit you could have ever put on.”

FAST BREAK Q&A WITH BOB WOOLF

THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU HEAR “CHARLES BARKLEY”...

When Charles came, it exploded. He put us on the map. He’s a good person, too.

TOM CHAMBERS?

Tom is a legend. He was the first free agent ever!  He’s the reason why the arena was built downtown and is called the ‘House that Tom built.’

KEVIN JOHNSON?

He came in, got his work done, and was out the door.

STEVE NASH?

Hardest worker ever.

DAN MAJERLE?

Love him. We bonded because we both came in at the same time and were rookies together.

JASON KIDD?

I enjoyed watching him play and even followed him in college.

DEVIN BOOKER?

Aside from being talented, just a friendly guy.

AL MCCOY?

Beyond personable.

When you’re in the same sentence and breath as Vince Scully and Harry Carey? Al McCoy… he’s legendary. I don’t get starstruck, but Al McCoy was the biggest name in my world at the time.

Al’s son called us and told us that he had passed and invited us to the funeral; it was so very moving. Steve Nash and Jerry spoke… such an honor to be there.

WHAT ABOUT THE SUNS COACHES?

I was friends with Cotton Fitzsimmons. We still see his wife JoAnn sometimes and attend all the events held in his memory. I became friends with Coach Jeff Hornacek… he was at our wedding, in addition to Frank Johnson and his wife.

THE HEAT, HUSTLE, AND HEART OF CHEF MACMILLAN

Brawling

with Beau

There are chefs, and then there’s Beau MacMillan. For more than two decades, “Beau Mac” has been the soul of Arizona’s culinary scene. He’s cooked for presidents, faced Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America , and helped put AZ on the national culinary map.

But Beau’s legend isn’t just built on what comes out of the kitchen. Years ago, while leading the program at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, he launched Bar Brawl at the iconic Jade Bar, a cocktail competition turned community spectacle that packed Sunday nights with the electricity of fight night.

“We wanted to showcase bartenders the way Iron Chef showcased chefs,” Beau recalls.

This past August, that electric energy returned as Bar Brawl was reborn at Tell Your Friends- Beau’s swanky underground cocktail lounge beneath The Americano- where DJs spun, celebrity judges sipped, and bartenders battled it out before roaring crowds. The revival cemented what’s always been true: Beau doesn’t just run restaurants. He builds legacies, one gathering, one plate, and one unforgettable night at a time.

Bar Brawl at Tell Your Friends

“It wasn’t just about precision, it was about personality. We wanted people laughing, cheering, dancing... and maybe learning a little about cocktails.”

Born in Maine, raised in Massachusetts, he didn’t grow up dreaming of being a chef. Baseball was his first love... “until my grades sidelined me,” he laughs.

A guidance counselor pushed him into a restaurant program, and by 17, Beau was bussing tables and sneaking peeks at the kitchen.

“Early on I loved the chaos and creativity of restaurants. There’s something addictive about feeding people.”

He carried that obsession across the country, followed by a chance opportunity in Scottsdale in 1998.

“I thought I was moving to the desert to tumbleweeds and cacti, but within three days I called my mom and said, ‘I’m never leaving.’”

He took the top job at what would become Sanctuary, turning the resort into one of Arizona’s most celebrated dining destinations.

For 20+ years, Beau built not just menus, but culture.

“Sanctuary was more than a job, it was family. I cried when I left. That hill shaped me, and I’ll always be proud of what we built there.”

Chef Beau with TYF Beverage Director Ashley Cibor and Americano's Chef Peter McQuaid
Beau with Guest Judges: Jonny Gomes (2-time World Series Champ), James Shields (MLB Pitcher/2011 All-Star), AQ Shipley, (Super Bowl Champ/ Commentator, Cards

It was also where he began hosting larger-than-life activations... Bar Brawl, cooking demos, wine festivals, and celebrity chef collabs that introduced the Valley to a national stage. His Nirvana Food & Wine Festival, for example, brought 80 local chefs shoulder-to-shoulder with national names, giving Arizona talent a rare spotlight.

“I wanted people here to feel like they didn’t have to fly to Aspen or New York to experience that energy.”

Then came the Food Network.

Beau remembers the break clearly: a chance meeting in Aspen with the network’s programming VP. One backyard barbecue later, he was invited to compete on Iron Chef America . The ingredient? Wagyu beef.

The opponent? Bobby Flay.

“The pressure was insane, but when you’ve got Wagyu, salt, and pepper, it’s the greatest thing in the world,” Beau says. He won.

More appearances followed...  Worst Cooks in America, Guy’s Grocery Games, and endless cameos that made him a familiar face in kitchens far beyond Arizona.

“TV changed my life, but I always tried to let it come to me instead of chasing it.”

And yet, for all the TV and accolades, Beau’s heart has always been in Scottsdale.

Today, he helms multiple concepts: Cala, The Americano, and Tell Your Friends... with more on the way.

“Every restaurant has its own identity. Cala is a Mediterranean vibe; Americano is evolving into sexier, approachable neighborhood Italian restaurant. Tell Your Friends is where we push cocktails and nightlife. And my next project, Kuza, will bring bold Asian flavors with a seductive edge.”

Ask him where the drive comes from, and he points to loyalty and legacy.

“I’ve been lucky, but I’ve also had people behind me... mentors, partners, and this community. Now it’s about shining a light on the next generation of chefs and bartenders. It’s their time.” He rattles off names of protégés who’ve gone on to Michelin stars and national acclaim. “That’s the stuff that makes me proud. If someone leaves my kitchen better than they came in, I’ve done my job.”

CONTINUED >

And there are things about Beau you might not know. Like the fact he spent five years as Wayne Gretzky’s personal chef and even laced up skates twice with the Great One himself. Or that long before he was a household name in the Valley, he was a background extra in Hollywood films.

“I was in Thelma & Louise. Brad Pitt walks down a hallway, and I’m the cop that passes him. Nobody knew who he was back then.... My kids still freeze-frame.”

At home, Beau is a father of five: four boys and a daughter who, he laughs, “runs the entire household.” His wife Tiffany, a Leo, holds it all together. “She’s the alpha cat. Strong, independent, a

total bad*ss. She sacrificed so much so I could do what I love.”

Off-duty, he still cooks for fun... sometimes elaborate Korean feasts that his kids won’t touch.

“I’ll spend four hours cooking and they’ll ask for mac and cheese.”

Through it all, what stands out is Beau’s magnetism. He has the rare ability to make every person in the room feel seen, whether they’re a young cook, a celebrity guest, or a stranger at the bar.

“Food is just the medium. What lasts is how you make someone feel.”

BITTERS & BRASS

WHERE CRAFT COCKTAILS MEET CONCIERGE SERVICE

For Michael Zukin, hospitality isn’t defined by big gestures, it’s the small, thoughtful details that leave the deepest impression. He still remembers the moment it clicked for him, sitting at a packed Manhattan bar with a cocktail in hand.

“I asked the bartender where the restroom was and expected a simple arm point, but instead, he walked me there himself. When I got back, there was a fresh cocktail waiting for me. That’s when I realized that hospitality is about the small things that make a lasting memory,” says Michael, owner of Bitters & Brass.

That mindset shaped his career through Michelin-starred dining rooms in New York. There, Michael saw firsthand how the most elite hospitality was never about pretension.

“At restaurants I once worked at, you can visit the wine cellar and open a thousand-dollar, 25-year-old bottle of champagne with a super soaker squirt gun. It’s ridiculous and makes people happy. That’s why we’re doing things differently, bringing that fun and  hospitality attitude directly to your event.”

That philosophy became the heartbeat of Bitters & Brass, the luxury mobile bartending company Michael launched in Scottsdale. But calling it a mobile bar is almost underselling it.

“Consider it your at-home speakeasy for private parties or your go-to cocktail setup for events elevated far beyond what you’d expect from a mobile bar,” Michael explains. “When you book with Bitters & Brass, you’re booking an experience, not just someone in a suit making drinks.”

From the second a client connects, they’re treated like family, not just a booking.

“We’re not a one-size-fits-all mobile bartender. For larger events, we’ll create a cocktail, beer, and wine list just for you, using top wines and spirits and beautiful seasonal ingredients. Every detail- from the look of the bar setup, to the cocktail napkin color, to the etching on each ice cube is thought out and poured over with the client’s desires in mind. We deliver an experience no bar or mobile bartender provides.”

It’s not just drinks, it’s an atmosphere. Michael and his team arrive with options ranging from sleek speakeasy-inspired setups to classic mid-century bars. Every element, down to the handmade Japanese glassware and house-crafted bitters, has been curated for the luxury market.

“Bitters & Brass is a luxury brand. We wear suits to every event unless the client specifies otherwise. We’re refined yet unpretentious. We love what we do, and we’re d*mn good at it.”

One of their most memorable offerings: the Bespoke Old Fashioned and Martini Carts, which let guests design their own cocktail using Bitters & Brass’s vast collection of bitters, spirits, and the ice is next level.

“All ice is hand-cut and custom-etched. All juices are fresh. All bitters are house-made. Every glass is Japanese handmade, and every ingredient is organic and seasonal. Our staff is background-checked and vetted.”

The client experience doesn’t end at the bar. Michael and his team often research their clients in advance to create highly personal touches.

“We’ll scroll social media, read articles, and watch interviews. Imagine showing up to an event and finding a cocktail named after your dog, even if you never mentioned your dog to us. That’s the level of detail we strive for.”

Discretion is also key. With NDAs and unspoken confidentiality agreements, the company has become a trusted choice for athletes, celebrities, and high-net-worth individuals, though Michael is quick to emphasize that the amount of money someone has doesn’t determine the care they receive.

“We use raw demerara sugar for a molasses-like mouthfeel, whiskies with depth, and a 230-year-old cardamom bitters recipe.”

“We treat every single client the exact same- with intention, love, and passion.”

Bitters & Brass has brought its signature touch to everything from intimate date-night cocktail classes to ultra-highnet-worth business meetings, where Michael says he’s rolled out a bespoke Old Fashioned cart for a room full of some of the wealthiest people in America. Whether it’s a backyard gathering or a black-tie affair, the throughline is the same: class, creativity, and connection.

“Hospitality isn’t service,” he says. “Service is a set of steps that make you money. Hospitality makes you family.”

Hornbill on the Horizon

Two masters at the top of their craft, one shared stage. Jennifer & Jason’s next act is already buzzing.

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Hornbill doesn’t read like a business plan. It feels like fate. The kind of concept that comes alive when two people at the height of their powers decide to collide. Jennifer Russo has spent more than a decade building her catering empire, Jennifer’s, into a fixture of Phoenix dining. Jason Asher has reshaped cocktail culture with immersive concepts like UnderTow and Century Grand. Both could have kept riding their respective waves. Instead, they’ve chosen to share the stage.

“I have had the honor of knowing Jason for years, and have watched his portfolio and concepts grow with admiration. Personally, we are both California Culinary alumni, and it is serendipitous that we ended up collaborating together,” says Jennifer.

Jason doesn’t hesitate to return the compliment.

“I have always viewed Jennifer as a savvy industry veteran. Someone who has consistently proven her expertise and resilience in this dynamic field. Her track record of success and her ability to navigate challenges with confidence and grace are truly inspiring to me. Working alongside her pushes me to think more creatively and more ambitiously.”

The admiration is mutual, but Hornbill isn’t built on nostalgia. Both were hungry for reinvention. Jennifer was entering her 13th season at The Market and ready to refresh her culinary playground. Jason, at a crossroads, wanted to channel his creativity into something that felt personal again.

“My search for talented, proficient operators; people with genuine passion for reinvention, led me back to Arcadia, where I reconnected with Jennifer,” Jason says. “Her vision aligned perfectly with mine.”

What they’ve imagined is neither hers nor his alone. Hornbill, slated for early 2026, is pitched as a restaurant-lounge, a social haven, and a sensory playground. Jennifer and Jason speak about it less like entrepreneurs and more like artists. For Jennifer, the allure is food that transports.

“For me, the goal is to have our patrons not only be immersed through the incredible aesthetics and curated cocktails, but to have their taste buds fully immersed in the Hornbill experience as well. There’s nothing else quite like this in Arcadia.”

Jason, true to form, leans into the story.

“Nestled in the heart of Phoenix, The Hornbill is more than just a cocktail bar; it’s a lively celebration of the rich cultural and culinary heritage of Singapore and Southeast Asia. The name pays homage to the iconic bird, known for its distinctive charm and symbolic significance as a creature of unity, strength, and a connection between earth and sky. That symbolism felt right.”

The inspiration struck during his travels through Southeast Asia. Jason came back obsessed with flavors, textures, botanicals, and the market culture. He talks about the electricity of night markets... the perfume of lemongrass and chili in the air, the glow of lanterns, the rhythmic pulse of music spilling from crowded stalls. Hornbill, he says, is a way of bottling that sensory chaos into a refined Arcadia destination.

And Jennifer was eager to flip her kitchen toward South-Asian–inspired plates.

Dumplings, shareable dishes, curated small bites... her food will be fresh, hyper-local, and executed with her signature OCDlevel perfectionism.

“It’s only done when every part of each dish tastes and looks how I envision it in my brain, LOL,” she admits.

Jason, meanwhile, is bent on elevating the cocktail program beyond what Phoenix has seen before.

“By leveraging advanced techniques, I’ve been able to create ingredients that simplify execution while letting each element truly shine. I want cocktails that are both innovative and approachable, where every detail tells a story and delights the senses.”

Guests can expect vibrant glassware, bold garnishes, and drinks that perfume the air before the first sip.

Together, they’re playing to strengths: Jennifer in the back, Jason in the front. But it isn’t a hard line. They riff on each other’s ideas constantly.

“We piggyback on each others’ ideas, and usually have a good laugh while discussing concepts and the future,” Jennifer says.

The two talk about synergy the way some people talk about falling in love- different worlds colliding into something larger.

“When two distinct perspectives collide, it often results in the birth of innovative ideas, fresh viewpoints, and a dynamic synergy that can lead to extraordinary outcomes. It’s more than just forming a partnership; it’s a shared journey of discovery,” says Jason.

Jason Asher

Hornbill will be immersive, but not in the way of past Asher projects with overt narrative gimmicks. Here, the story is woven through space and the people. Think lush greenery against dark wood, dim lighting that hums with intimacy, and a bar that feels like the beating heart of the room.

“Storytelling may not be the central focus in the way it has been before, but it still plays a vital role. A compelling narrative underpins the space, giving the team confidence to share it with guests and making each interaction more meaningful. Ultimately, it’s about inspiring conversation and ensuring every guest leaves with a story of their own,” he says.

Jennifer, ever blunt, cuts to the chase: “It’s going to be spectacular.”

Hornbill will open in early 2026, designed as a place where food and drink carry equal weight, where seasons will keep menus shifting, and where Arcadia gains a social retreat unlike anything else in its orbit. Jason hopes guests leave saying: That was an experience like no other. Jennifer is betting they will.

THE REVIVAL OF ARCADIA TAVERN

IT’S ALL GOOD IN THE HOOD

Arcadia has always been more than a neighborhood. It is a culture, a place where sophistication meets ease, where neighbors gather with the unspoken agreement that good food and cold drinks taste better when shared. Back in 2009, when Arcadia Tavern first opened its doors, the place immediately became a local institution. After a long pause, The Original Arcadia Tavern has returned, refreshed, reimagined, and ready for its next chapter.

“There were many people who championed the original concept when it opened in 2009, including a handful of local friends who were residents that invested in the idea,” recalls S. Barrett Rinzler, Founder & CEO of Square One Concepts. “My group comprised the operations team and, honestly, we pulled off a small miracle that it worked as well as it did in that small of a space. It was a hit from the start with the clientele from Arcadia and beyond... it became the place to be, to see friends and to hang out.”

That magic was never just about food and drink. It was about community. And while the team went on to launch Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers in 2011, Arcadia Tavern never left Rinzler’s mind.

“We had so much initial success with Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers that we sold our stake in the Tavern to the other investors to concentrate on that brand, but I’ve always regretted doing that. Now, we are bringing back the inspiration that started all of it.”

For Rinzler, reviving Arcadia Tavern is about more than nostalgia.

“What makes it special is that it was created by people who live in the community. That’s how it all began. There is a comfort in that, that local ‘everybody knows your name’ vibe, and now we’re elevating that.”

And the timing felt right.

“For years, we considered reconstituting it, so here we are. The neighborhood loved it then and we’re bringing back that energy with a refreshed look for folks to enjoy for years to come.”

The new Arcadia Tavern is designed to feel familiar yet elevated.

“Short answer: We want people to enjoy it, to be welcomed anytime, and crave the great food, the cocktails and the people. We want folks to realize, hey, ‘It’s All Good In The Hood’ and come back for more.”

That neighborly charm extends to how the Tavern fits into Arcadia today.

“The neighborhood identity is friendly, inviting and also quite sophisticated. Unpretentious. Welcoming, but sparing no turn to deliver good, friendly service, delicious cuisine and lots of cold beverages.”

Executive Chef Robert Wagner is no stranger to the Tavern or to Square One Concepts.

“I was the chef at Arcadia Tavern in 2009, working closely with Barrett, our founder, and also Tracy Frazier, our COO. We have a long track record working together.”

His philosophy for the menu is a balance between comfort and quality.

“Elevated because it’s quality and prepared with the best ingredients. Comfort-driven because it’s not caviar every night.”

When asked about defining dishes, Wagner points to the kind of food that draws people back again and again.

“I would have to say the Western Prime Dip sandwich, The Southern Fried Chicken or the ribs. But let’s face it, a great menu item is also in the eyes of the beholder. Many prefer a delicious salad. Me too. Salad doesn’t necessarily mean without flavor. In fact, we pack a punch with our salads, like with our Steak Salad.”

And while nostalgia matters, Wagner’s approach blends past with present.

“Well, I’m lucky because I created with Barrett and team those items that were hits for the Tavern.”

There is also a deeper purpose woven into the new menu. The Thunderbird Hot Chicken Sandwich and the Charro Chicken Sandwich each generate donations for local charities with every order.

“We hope that this version is as well accepted as the previous one. We aim to make sure this one is done right,” says Rinzler.

FOOD FIGHT UNIVERSITY

Scottsdale-based Chef J Perry knows what it’s like to cook at both extremes. He’s plated meals for Jeff Bezos and other A-list clients and he’s spent years inside a university dining hall, where 28,000 meals a day had to be delivered with precision, care, and an eye on cost.

“When you cook for high-end clients, budget isn’t a constraint. But in college dining, the challenge is creating the best food possible at the lowest price,” says Chef J Perry.

That contrast- luxury without limits against institutional constraints- revealed a truth often overlooked: campus food matters. It shapes health, focus, and culture. It influences enrollment decisions and student performance. And it deserves to be taken seriously.

That’s the heart of his upcoming book, Food Fight University: The Campus Dining Revolution (Spring 2026), a behind-the-scenes look at today’s college dining programs. It’s equal parts celebration of what they’re doing right and a cautionary flag on the fight it takes to stay at the top.

The book spotlights ten universities leading the charge in campus dining; schools where culinary programs give local restaurants a run for their money at just a fraction of the cost. While not featured in the book, Perry points to UMass Amherst, often ranked number one for campus dining by The Princeton Review, as an example of what’s possible. The school serves more than 45,000 meals a day, sources locally, and even operates its own permaculture gardens.

At UC Davis, birthplace of farm-to-table and neighbor to Napa Valley, Perry spotlights chefs blending sustainability with creativity, serving produce grown outside dorms. At Oregon State,

where he spent nearly a decade, the campus became his lab for balancing scale, sustainability, and student needs.

“Oregon State gave me the strong support I needed to push the envelope and the ongoing educational foundation to help drive innovation and culinary excellence. I discovered a story of innovation hiding in plain sight.

Universities growing food on-site, installing solar-powered kitchens, and redesigning menus with authenticity so international students felt truly at home.”

He also uncovered a financial reality that surprised him.

“The sheer amount of money it takes to make real changes on campus stopped me cold.”

For parents, Food Fight University is both comfort and guide. Perry notes dining is now central to college decisions, and parents should ask sharper questions: What’s sourced locally? How are allergies managed? Does the menu reflect campus diversity?

“Parents worry about how their kids will eat on campus. My hope is that this book empowers them to look beyond glossy brochures.”

For students, food fuels energy, balance, and focus, with dining hall habits shaping health long after graduation. For administrators, Perry notes dining has shifted from afterthought to vital pillar of student life and a powerful tool for universities.

“I REALIZED THERE’S AN UNTOLD STORY ABOUT HOW COLLEGE DINING DEPARTMENTS ARE DRIVING REAL CHANGE; NOT JUST FOR STUDENTS TODAY, BUT FOR THE FUTURE OF HOW WE EAT.”

“This book should be a tool on every campus tour as students make one of the biggest commitments of their lives; dining is no longer a line item in a budget- it’s a reflection of a university’s values and vision. After finding the inspiration to start, I connected with GMK Book Writing & Publishing. I pitched the idea, and Gary Kreb and his team were excited to help me bring it to life.”

And for chefs, Perry sees higher education as a hidden frontier; a place where culinary talent can grow, innovate, and leave a lasting mark.

“Take your career into campus dining. You’ll be challenged, supported, and have the chance to make a real impact.”

The book also looks beyond college.

“K–12 have the biggest need for change and the greatest challenge, and I would love to help start that conversation.”

At its core, Food Fight University is about pulling back the curtain. The Valley Chef hopes the book sparks conversations on campuses, at kitchen tables, and inside boardrooms.

A Love Letter to the Art of Eating Well

Medicine

I am often asked: “Doctor, what’s the best diet?”

The honest answer? It depends on your age, gut health, gender, physical activity, metabolism, and the unique medical conditions that shape your body. While fad diets can yield short-term results, research consistently shows they are rarely sustainable over time.

Globally, nearly every major medical society agrees that plant-forward eating, rich in whole foods and low in processed products and animal fats, can prevent and sometimes even reverse disease. This philosophy is also echoed in the Blue Zones Project, a global longevity study identifying five regions: Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Ikaria (Greece), and Loma Linda (California), where people live measurably longer, healthier lives. Research into these communities reveals common traits among centenarians: a predominantly plant-based diet, stopping eating when they are about 80% full, strong social connections, daily physical activity woven into their routines, and a deep sense of purpose. Their way of life offers compelling evidence that healthy eating is just one piece of a larger, interconnected lifestyle that fosters health and longevity.

One of my patients put it perfectly:  “You know why I hate diets? Because the word DIE is in it.” And she’s right. Dieting can strip away the joy from one of life’s simplest, most human pleasures: sharing and savoring good food. Our bodies were designed to eat in rhythm, not in haste. As food makes its way down, a cascade of enzymes is released from the stomach and small intestine. Your nervous system shifts from “fight or flight” to “rest and digest.” Blood flow is rerouted to your gut, enabling your body to perform the extraordinary work of nutrient absorption. This magnificent process is bypassed when nutrients arrive in pill or powder form or from juice stripped of fiber. Without the whole food matrix, juices can spike blood sugar, disrupt hormones, and unsettle your stress response.

In my primary care and lifestyle medicine practice, “food as medicine” is often my first prescription, or a powerful companion to conventional treatments, for conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension. Whole foods, especially plants, provide vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients in a form your body can truly absorb. That fiber also nourishes your gut microbiome, which in turn produces short-chain fatty acids which signals the release of your body’s own natural version of GLP-1. There are several healing properties of whole fruits and vegetables. Consider the antioxidant-rich polyphenols in pomegranates; tiny molecules that help neutralize free radicals, slowing cellular aging and supporting heart health. Or the satisfying richness of a roasted sweet potato, brimming with beta carotene. You don’t have to be vegan or vegetarian to reap these benefits. Aim for whole plant foods and whole grains to cover at least 50–75% of your plate, and you may notice positive changes in as little as 24 hours.

And yes, vegetables can be fabulous. In my family, I’m known for creating luxuriously abundant, plant-forward grazing boards during the holidays. They’re vibrant, inviting, and most importantly, delicious. I begin with a central food item, such as homemade hummus, and build around it with seasonal produce, dried fruit, nuts, olives, cheese, wholegrain crackers and pita bread. At a recent potluck, a colleague even requested her own personal tub of that dreamy homemade hummus… so good, and I’ve shared the recipe with you below.

This season, I invite you to consider your meals not as “diets,” but as “nourishment” for your body and soul. Food isn’t just fuel. It’s your daily love letter to yourself. Write it well.

THE DREAMIEST HUMMUS

Serves 4-6 | Prep time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

• 3 cans organic chickpeas, liquid drained and rinsed

• 1 cup tahini

• 3 cloves of garlic, crushed

• 1 lemon, juiced (3-4 tablespoons)

• Kosher salt

• ½ to ¾ cup ice cold water

Method:

1. In a food processor, blitz the chickpeas into a paste—it will be thick like a nut butter.

2. With the processor still running, carefully add the tahini, garlic, lemon juice and 1 tsp of salt

3. In a thin stream, add about a ½ cup ice water until the hummus is luxuriously whipped and smooth.

4. Add salt to taste. Add more water as needed for desired consistency.

5. Scoop it into a bowl and smooth it out with the back of a spoon creating a well in the middle.

6. Drizzle with your favorite high quality extra virgin olive oil. You can also fill the center with other deliciousness; toasted pine nuts, braised wild mushrooms, roasted red peppers drizzled with Calabrian chili oil, warm thinly sliced lamb shawarma… the possibilities are endless!

Place at the heart of a luxuriously curated grazing board. Devour with warm pita bread or toasted pita chips.

DEAR

ASK CAT ON FOOD, FIRST DATES, & LOVE THAT NOURISHES

Discreet Advice For Love & Dating

In Paradise Valley

Food and dating have always gone hand in hand, but sharing a meal is about more than what’s served. From deciding if dinner makes a good first date, to when it feels right to cook at home, to discerning whether someone feeds your soul or simply fills a chair, the way we eat together often reveals the way we love.

Q: I keep getting invited to dinner for a first date. Isn’t that what people do? Why do you suggest, “no dinner on the first date?”

A: Because a stranger hasn’t earned two hours of your time and energy. A first meeting should be short and simple; what I call a Date Zero. Coffee, a walk, maybe a drink. Just enough to see if you’re curious for more. Dinner is for someone who’s shown effort and alignment, not just swiped right.

Q: I met a man who insists on lavish tasting menus for every date. It feels exciting, but I’m worried it’s covering up something shallow. Should I trust the sparkle?

A: Sparkle isn’t substance. Lavish meals can be intoxicating, but they don’t equal compatibility. Ask yourself: between the courses, do you feel seen, or just dazzled? A partner who’s real won’t need five-star restaurants to keep your attention.

Q: I love cooking, and I’ve been tempted to invite a man over for a homemade dinner early on. Is that a sweet gesture or am I moving too fast?

A: Too fast. Home-cooked meals carry intimacy, and intimacy should be earned. Share your table when he’s shown consistency and investment, not just charm. Your kitchen isn’t a proving ground, it’s a reward for real effort.

NO PASSPORT REQUIRED: REGENOKINE ARRIVES IN SCOTTSDALE

“Kobe Bryant. Alex Rodriguez. Even Pope John Paul II...”

When asked who’s trusted the Regenokine Program, Dr. Ashu Goyle doesn’t hesitate to name names.

“These are people who could access any doctor or treatment in the world, and they chose this,” says Dr. Goyle, owner, Integrated Spine, Pain & Wellness.

For years, the Regenokine Program was only available in Germany, developed and performed exclusively by Dr. Peter Wehling in Düsseldorf.

The healing secret trusted by athletes, icons, and global A-listers

“That’s why Kobe traveled there to calm the pain and swelling in his knee so he could keep playing at the highest level. Alex Rodriguez also went overseas, and even Pope John Paul II had it for arthritis.”

Dr. Ashu Goyle

Now, patients don’t need a passport. Dr. Goyle says he’s one of only about five doctors in the U.S.- and the only one in Arizonatrained and approved to perform the Regenokine Program.

“PRP takes your blood, spins it, and concentrates the platelets. The Regenokine Program goes further. It isolates powerful proteins and growth factors, especially IL-1 Ra, which blocks one of the main drivers of inflammation in joints. That’s why it doesn’t just encourage healing, it directly calms inflammation in joints and the spine.”

Because of that advanced process, results often come fast, without long recoveries.

“Most people are able to return to work, travel, or even train the very next day,” he says.

Regenokine isn’t new or experimental. According to Dr. Goyle, it’s been studied for over a decade, used in more than 10,000 treatments worldwide, and clinical data proves it works. One study even showed that in 83% of cases, patients avoided surgery altogether.”

Who’s it for? Not just elite athletes and celebrities.

“It’s for anyone who wants to stay active, avoid surgery, and live without pain. That could mean a golfer wanting to keep their swing, a grandparent who wants to run around with their grandkids, or a frequent traveler who can’t afford weeks of downtime.”

For him, the mission goes beyond pain relief.

“I don’t just want to mask symptoms. I want to help people truly heal so they can keep doing the things they love.”

At Integrated Spine, Pain & Wellness, that philosophy guides everything. Trained at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic and double board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine, Dr. Goyle has spent nearly two decades studying how pain works in the body; and, more importantly, how to stop it at the source.

“That’s what inspired me to bring the Regenokine Program to Scottsdale: a natural, data-backed treatment designed to calm inflammation, protect joints, and support long-term healing.”

DR. ASHU GOYLE

Managing chronic pain takes more than quick fixes or occasional healthy habits. Scottsdale specialist Dr. Ashu Goyle creates personalized treatment plans that address root causes, offering lasting relief and improved wellness. His approach goes beyond symptom management, helping patients restore balance, build resilience, and truly thrive in daily life.

EMMA BROYLES: Beyond the Crown

For Down Syndrome Awareness Month, this beauty queen shares the purpose that shaped her platform

ARTICLE BY NADINE BUBECK | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY EMMA BROYLES

Arizona weather can be relentless, but Emma Broyles is used to extremes. She grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, where winter skies turn dark by 4 p.m. and summers stretch into midnight sunlight. She’s also used to living in the in-between; half Korean, half Irish, a small-town girl who became the first Alaskan and first Korean American to ever wear the Miss America crown.

Now 24, Emma is rooted in Arizona, a place she calls “predictable in the best way,” with its sunshine, sushi spots, and hikes she saves for winter. But her story- told with a mix of humility and candor- isn’t about tiaras and sashes. It’s about a brother named Brendan, a platform she never expected, and a belief that empathy can change the world.

“My brother has always been my why,” Emma says. “He’s the reason I got involved in the Special Olympics when I was five years old, and the reason I’ve spent my life advocating for inclusion.”

As October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Emma is exclusively sharing her journey, recounting hospital stays, therapy appointments, and a special family bond.

“Most siblings fight… we never did. Supporting Brendan united us. It’s why both my younger brother and I are going into medicine. Brendan shaped our futures without even trying.”

The Miss America crown gave her a megaphone.

“I never thought I’d win. Honestly, I just entered for scholarship money. I bought my Miss Alaska dress off eBay, but when I stood on that stage, I thought: okay, this is my chance. This is my moment to talk about the Special Olympics and mental health.”

What came next was whirlwind travel, international speeches, and a front-row seat to the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin.

“Seeing athletes from every corner of the world, hearing different languages, watching them carry their countries’ flags… it gave me chills. I thought: this is so much bigger than me.”

But she’s just as open about her struggles.

“People expect Miss America to be perfect. I wanted to show the opposite. I talked about my OCD, my anxiety, my ADHD, even compulsive skin-picking. It was scary, but vulnerability became my superpower. It lets me connect with people in a way perfection never could.”

For Emma, the point has never been polish.

“Empathy is the muscle we all need to build; that’s what’s going to create a better tomorrow. You don’t need to have a sibling with a disability to practice inclusion; you just need to step out of your comfort zone. Do it enough, and it becomes second nature.”

RUMOR HAS IT YOUR BOYFRIEND IS KIND OF A BIG DEAL…

Laughs...  “Yeah, Corbin (Carroll) plays a little baseball. It’s nerve-wracking watching him, but I go to as many games as I can. Off the field, we’re just normal… Netflix, cats, sushi.”

FIRST MISS ALASKA DRESS?

“Bought it off eBay. It was blue. Cheapest one I could find.”

WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR HEAD THE NIGHT YOU WON MISS AMERICA?

“Honestly? I didn’t think I would win. I remember thinking, just do your song, answer your question, represent Alaska… and then suddenly, I had a crown on my head and was being whisked onto a plane. It was a blur.”

WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT THAT YEAR TRAVELING AS MISS AMERICA?

“The people. Every city, every school, every Special Olympics event. I’d meet kids who reminded me of Brendan, or parents who whispered, ‘thank you for telling the truth about mental health.’ Those moments are what I carry with me.”

6 Designs Setting the Standard for Kitchens and Bars

CELEBRATED NAMES IN THE HOME SPACE REFLECT ON TIMELESS LIVING

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

For our Food & Drink Issue, we turned to PVCL partners and some of the Valley’s most trusted names in design and real estate to spotlight the spaces where life most often unfolds: the kitchen. Here are six distinctive and diverse details shaping today’s most enviable gathering spaces.

DECO GLAMOUR

The glamorous Art Deco-inspired bar and entertainment space at 6721 E Cheney Drive in Paradise Valley balances opulence with warmth, creating the perfect setting for elevated social gatherings. The bar, wrapped in high-gloss Titanium granite, is both daring and refined. Overhead, polished crystal and nickel pendants by American Brass & Crystal cast a soft, ambient glow, while a matching chandelier with cascading prisms introduces a touch of refined drama to the adjoining lounge. A sculptural spiral staircase serves as a striking architectural focal point, complementing the mirrored glass, dark-stained cabinetry, and wood beam accents that echo a timeless cocktail-lounge aesthetic.

“What makes this space a true showstopper is how it captures the return of statement entertaining with bold materials, rich textures, and dramatic lighting,” says Katrina Barrett, luxury real estate agent with Local Luxury | Christie’s International Real Estate. “We’re seeing a strong trend toward glamorous, hospitality-inspired design, and this bar delivers that in every way.”

A COLLABORATION IN CRAFT

In a striking collaboration, Regal American Homes, led by visionary builder Avi Azoulay, partnered with world-renowned designer Windsor Smith to create a residence that redefines luxury living. The home seamlessly merges Smith’s celebrated design philosophy with Regal American Homes’ meticulous craftsmanship.

Known for curating spaces for global tastemakers and celebrities, Smith’s aesthetic balances timeless elegance with modern functionality. This residence captures her luxury lifestyle ethos in every detail.

At its heart is the show-stopping main kitchen, anchored by a sculptural custom L’Atelier range wall and paired with a sleek Bulthaup system. Brass-inset cabinetry elevates the space to a gallery-like experience, while a hidden back kitchen with top-of-the-line Gaggenau appliances keeps the main space pristine, supporting both everyday living and high-end entertaining.

“Collaborating with Windsor Smith has been a privilege,” says Azoulay. “Her vision pushes boundaries, and our team at Regal American Homes was dedicated to bringing every detail to life with precision and passion. This home is a testament to what’s possible when craftsmanship meets artistry.”

THE ELEVATED EVERYDAY KITCHEN

Colleen Langdon, owner of Crafted Quarters Interior Design, describes this Scottsdale kitchen remodel as a study in balance and a thoughtful mix of timeless design and modern functionality.

“The pull-down bridge faucet makes a sculptural statement while offering everyday practicality, and the brass kitchen rail above the range adds both style and utility. Crisp white cabinetry and a soft taupe backsplash set a classic foundation, while the navy island introduces a bold pop of color. Brass hardware and lighting bring warmth and cohesion, tying the whole space together. The result is a kitchen that feels elevated yet approachable, with every detail working in harmony. It’s a design meant to be lived in, enjoyed, and admired without feeling overdone.”

DESIGNED WITH DEPTH

At the heart of Tinker Development’s Delos Circle Project is a kitchen that perfectly captures the firm’s vision for homes that feel both elevated and lived-in. Designed in collaboration with interior designer Britany Simon, the space reflects a “transitional with a twist” approach that layers timeless elements with unexpected character.

“This kitchen balances timeless details with unexpected layers,” says Simon. “The tailored range hood and traditional cabinetry create a refined backdrop, while the mix of natural wood tones and soft green paint add personality. To keep the design from feeling too formal or predictable, we gave the second island an antique inspired character, lending the space a sense of history and charm that feels collected rather than staged.”

The result is a kitchen that anchors the Delos Circle home in sophistication while showcasing Tinker Development’s signature ability to merge craftsmanship with forward-thinking design.

BUILT FOR GATHERING

Scott and Adrianna Grigg of The Grigg’s Group Powered by The Altman Brothers designed their home with one priority in mind: creating spaces that reflect their lifestyle of entertaining while still offering comfort at the end of the day.

“When designing our home, it was important for us to focus on spaces tailored for entertaining friends and family. Designing the sleek bar with the wine fridge set the tone for this space. Being in the industry that we are in, we are constantly entertaining and dining out and we wanted to bring that into our home. But yet, at the end of the day, we created a space to feel relaxed and unwind.”

FORMED WITH INTENTION

“This Scottsdale home is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can transform a smaller footprint into a highly functional and luxurious space,” says Brandon Fadden, Constructed Matter, Inc.

“We maximized storage and usability with custom cabinetry, open shelving, and integrated details that make everyday living seamless. The mix of warm wood tones, natural stone, and subtle textures creates a timeless palette that feels both elevated and inviting. By opening the kitchen to the living area, we created a layout that’s ideal for casitas, secondary living spaces, or as the heart of a main residence. To us, true luxury isn’t always about size- it’s about intentionally designed spaces that are tailored to the end user. This project showcases how upscale living can be achieved through smart planning, craftsmanship, and attention to detail.”

INSIDE THE ROBSON CABIN

How Hype Studio Redefined this Contemporary Retreat

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JASON ROEHNER, ROEHNER PHOTOGRAPHS

When Mike Alexander and the Hype Studio team trudged through two feet of snow up a driveway in Greer back in 2022, he knew the site had potential. It opened toward the White Tank Mountains and Mount Baldy, a canvas of staggering beauty.

“Plentiful space, stunning views, and immersed in nature,” says Mike Alexander, Principal and owner of Hype Studio.

The project became Robson Cabin, a sleek yet soulful contemporary retreat designed for Doug and Denise Robson, the husband-wife duo behind Gallo Blanco, Otro Café, and Tesota. And it became a signature showcase for Hype Studio, the boutique architecture and interiors firm Alexander co-founded after years of work.

Raised in Scotland, Alexander grew up among Victorian and Georgian facades in Glasgow and Edinburgh, but found himself pulled toward more modern voices like Scotland’s iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Italy’s Carlo Scarpa. Later, a move to Arizona sharpened his sense of contrast.

“Arizona is a unique canvas in which to work... crisp light and shadows... challenges that lead to interesting and creative solutions.”

After years designing luxury homes and large-scale projects abroad- including the KAFD Financial District in Saudi Arabia- he wanted to bring that sensibility back home.

“I wanted my work to become part of our local communities. That’s why Hype Studio was born.”

At first mention, the phrase “contemporary cabin” might sound like an oxymoron. But for Mike and his team, it’s a way of designing a home that marries comfort and craft with modern techniques.

“The word contemporary sometimes comes with connotations of cold and soulless, but that’s far from the case. Clean lines of modern architecture help frame expansive views. The interiors are just as cozy as any traditional cabin and provide the perfect setting from which to observe the nature outside.”

Robson Cabin illustrates that balance. Wrapped in standing-seam metal cladding, the structure captures light and shadow that shift throughout the day, while its warm redwood patio carves softness into the skin. The risk of carving out that exterior living space, Alexander admits, was snow.

SWEEPING VIEWS WHILE

“IT WAS DESIGNED TO CAPTURE

SURROUNDING NATURE,

STAYING CONNECTED TO THE
CREATING AN AUTHENTIC AND RESTORATIVE ESCAPE.”

“During winter, the prevailing wind can pile snow onto any horizontal surface where it can sit for months. Our first task was to study this carefully orienting the home toward the view while still protecting the deck.”

Nature, Alexander insists, was always the driving force. Skylights draw daylight into corridors that might otherwise feel like “necessary evils.” A picture window at the end of the bedroom hall frames afternoon light and landscape beyond. The living room skylight casts sunlight down the wall, illuminating a panoramic photograph by Aric Mei. Ceiling heights were kept at nine feet for comfort, but beyond

glass sliders the sloped patio ceilings expand outward to the mountain horizon.

Inside, the design revolves around a compact but carefully planned kitchen; an intentional move for Doug Robson, a chef who critiques flow with the precision of a craftsman.

“Some of our most intensive meetings were about the kitchen. Doug reviewed and refined the design multiple times. When we returned to photograph the cabin, we shared a meal cooked by Doug and close friend, Chef Aaron Chamberlin. Watching two masters work in this small footprint and see it operate at full potential was incredible.”

The cabin is more than a second home; it’s a retreat for Doug and Denise to step away from the demands of their restaurant empire. It also doubles as a creative outpost, where new menus can be tested, business managed, and fresh ideas sparked.

“Robson Cabin functions as a retreat where everyday life can slow down… But it also has space for creative work. It’s both respite and inspiration.”

The ripple effect is ongoing. Since completing the cabin, the Robsons have enlisted Hype Studio to consult on interiors of their newest restaurant, Tesota, and design the renovation of their Arcadia home. For Mike, that continuity- relationships that grow from project to project- is what he values most.

“Through the design process of residential architecture, we often find that we spend a great deal of time with clients and become friends along the way.”

In Greer, that legacy now takes the shape of a cabin that rises to meet nature, reflects its owners’ lifestyle, and tells the story of how architecture, when done with care, can blur the lines between structure and setting, past and present, modern and timeless.

The Making of Silver Sky

Inside the Vision, Drive, and Detail Behind PV’s 12-Estate Community

Paradise Valley doesn’t often get something new. Which is why Silver Sky- a community of just twelve estates nestled against Mummy Mountain- is one of the most talked-about projects in Arizona. Visionary design, meticulous in execution, and crafted to stand the test of time, it’s the kind of development that only comes along once in a generation.

At the center of it is Arizona native Jeremy Takas, a builder in every sense of the word. His career began far from luxury homes, in 2007, when he co-founded Right Away Disposal with a single truck and a bold idea. Over the next decade, that idea grew into the largest privately owned waste and recycling provider in Arizona, employing more than 300 people and managing a fleet of more than 200 vehicles.

The rapid expansion didn’t just demand leadership- it demanded vision.

“We were growing so quickly that finding and building facilities became part of my job,” Jeremy recalls.

That necessity pulled him into industrial real estate, where he oversaw the development of landfills, transfer stations, and a cutting-edge recycling facility. By the time he sold the company in 2018, he had developed a

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SILVER SKY

reputation as a disciplined operator who paired blue-collar grit with boardroom-level precision.

“I’d study every detail of our operation, ask how it could be improved, and when I’d gone through every item, I’d start over.”

At first glance, the leap from hauling waste to crafting luxury estates may seem improbable. But in Jeremy’s world, the throughline is clear. Managing nearly 200 daily moving parts in a logistics operation isn’t far from orchestrating dozens of contractors, suppliers, and build phases in a $20 million home.

“In my former line of work, clients expected pickups every day without excuses. In luxury real estate, buyers expect the same; only now, the delivery is their dream home.”

That vision became clear when Jeremy encountered 18 untouched acres at the base of Mummy Mountain. Surrounded by some of PV’s most remarkable homes and blessed with rare stillness and sweeping views, it was a canvas of unparalleled possibility.

“We saw the chance to create something extraordinary; a community of twelve brand-new estates designed by the most talented architects, designers, and builders in the region. Silver Sky was envisioned for people who see a home as more than just a place to live; it’s a legacy.”

Long before construction began, Jeremy assembled a team of top engineers to study the site.

“At the base of Mummy Mountain, water flow can be unpredictable, and I wanted to ensure the community would stand resilient even in the rare event of a 100-year flood.”

As part of the infrastructure, advanced underground systems were strategically installed to safeguard both the natural beauty of the land and the long-term investments of every homeowner. Each homesite was also equipped with its own transformer to ensure steady, abundant power for decades to come, while fiber-optic lines were installed throughout to provide residents with the fastest communications technology available.

“Every decision was deliberate. We wanted to ensure that Silver Sky would be as functional as it is beautiful; not just today, but for generations.”

Today, Jeremy’s vision for Silver Sky is well underway. The opportunity to build a custom home within the community has completely sold out, with three end-user designs already in motion. What remains available are Silver Sky’s signature offerings- two award-winning showcase homes currently under construction. With four homes rising now and two more set to break ground before year’s end, the community is on track to be fully realized within the next two years.

“Silver Sky is more than a development; it’s a rare chapter in Paradise Valley’s story. Just twelve estates. No more, no less. When they’re gone, they’re gone.”

5 MINUTES WITH... VAN CARLSON

The Discipline of Risk, Resilience, and Building Wealth

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY VAN

5 Minutes With… is a monthly spotlight on the visionaries shaping culture, business, and impact offering candid, story-rich moments that reveal not just what they’ve built, but why it matters.

Some leaders don’t just manage risk- they redefine it. Van Carlson, Founder & CEO of SRA 831(b) Admin, has built one of the nation’s most innovative firms around a little-known section of the tax code that transforms how business owners protect- and grow- their wealth. In this conversation, he shares the journey, insights, and vision behind helping business owners keep more of what they earn while building resilience for the future.

JM: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START SRA 831(B) ADMIN, AND HOW DID YOU RECOGNIZE THE OPPORTUNITY IN A PART OF THE TAX CODE MOST BUSINESS OWNERS HAD NEVER HEARD OF?

VC: For years, I worked closely with business owners, advisors, and insurance professionals and saw the same problem over and over: owners paid high premiums year after year, yet remained exposed to “uninsurable risks” like supply chain disruption, regulatory changes, or reputational damage.

I watched companies get blindsided by events outside their control and thought, There has to be a better way to help businesses protect their cash flow and enterprise value.

That’s when I discovered Section 831(b) of the tax code, a legitimate, IRS-recognized provision since 1986. Hardly anyone was talking about it, yet it offered businesses a powerful way to self-insure against critical, uninsurable risks while building tax-advantaged reserves.

JM: IF YOU COULD BOIL DOWN THE SINGLE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION BUSINESS OWNERS HAVE ABOUT 831(B) PLANS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

VC: The biggest misconception is that 831(b) plans are primarily about taxes. The real advantage is control. An 831(b) plan lets a business self-insure against real but hard-to-cover risks like supply chain disruption, reputational damage, key client loss, or regulatory changes. The tax benefits are simply a byproduct.

JM: YOU OFTEN SAY ‘TURNING RISK INTO WEALTH’...CAN YOU SHARE A STORY WHERE AN 831(B) LITERALLY SAVED OR TRANSFORMED A BUSINESS DURING A CRISIS?

VC: “Turning risk into wealth” is about a mindset shift. Most owners see risk as something to avoid, but risk is everywhere, and the biggest threats are often the ones insurance won’t cover. An 831(b) plan lets owners take control by setting aside reserves for the “what-ifs” that could disrupt everything. When a disruption happens, those reserves protect cash flow, jobs, and enterprise value. If it doesn’t, the unused funds can eventually flow back to ownership, turning what would have been a sunk cost into a wealth-building strategy. It’s not about gaming the tax code. It’s about protecting what you’ve built and creating long-term strength and flexibility.

JM: FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE, WHY DO YOU THINK 831(B) STRATEGIES ARE STILL UNDERUTILIZED, DESPITE BEING IRS-RECOGNIZED SINCE 1986?

VC: Even after nearly four decades in the tax code, 831(b) plans are still overlooked. Many owners hear “831(b)” and think “tax shelter,” a stigma left by misuse in the early 2000s. The truth is that when structured and administered correctly, these are fully compliant risk management tools. Another reason is lack of education among advisors. Many CPAs, advisors, and brokers don’t fully understand the strategy or don’t bring it up, leaving owners unaware of how powerful it can be. CONTINUED >

JM: WHAT’S THE MOST UNEXPECTED, EVEN PERSONAL, BENEFIT YOU’VE SEEN A CLIENT EXPERIENCE BY OPENING AN 831(B)- SOMETHING THAT WENT BEYOND MONEY AND NUMBERS?

VC: The biggest surprise for many clients isn’t financial; it’s peace of mind. When owners have a plan for the risks insurance won’t cover, they gain confidence. They sleep better knowing their employees, families, and legacies are protected.  It’s not just about numbers on a balance sheet. It’s about freedom to lead boldly, make strategic decisions, and focus on growth without constant fear of the unknown.

As business owners look for smarter ways to protect what they’ve built, strategies like the 831(b) stand out as both practical and visionary. Conversations like this are why I host roundtables and private discussions with leaders across industries- to uncover ideas that not only save money but also shape legacies.

If interested in attending my next Roundtable on 831(b)’s with Van Carlson as one of my speakers, please email me at jason.monczka@pomeroygroup.com

Life at Full Gallop

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY

Jamie Morrison has lived and breathed polo for more than 35 years, with a résumé stacked with wins like the 22-goal Prince of Wales Trophy, the Eduardo Moore 15-goal, seven Arena Gold Cups, and two European Championship gold medals for England. Yet when asked which victory makes him smile most, he doesn’t hesitate: “Winning the Eddie Moore with my father. That one holds special memories.”

Today, Jamie serves as Chairman of the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, Steward of the Hurlingham Polo Association, and Chairman of the HPA Arena Committee, but none of it, he insists, feels like work.

“I’m passionate about all of them, so it doesn’t feel like work,” he says.

JAMIE MORRISON BRINGS GLOBAL POLO PRESTIGE TO SCOTTSDALE

“I WASN’T CUT OUT TO BE A ROCKSTAR. POLO PLAYER WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BE THE WAY FORWARD.”

Jamie’s career has taken him around the world, from the famed Palermo fields in Buenos Aires to the lush polo pitches of Campinas, Brazil.

“Playing at Palermo was amazing, but one of my favourite places to play was in Campinas. Beautiful area with lots of stunning polo pitches.”

For all the travel and variety, Jamie admits there’s nothing quite like the rush of playing on grass.

“I love both grass and arena polo, but nothing beats going flat out on the grass in the sunshine. Very lucky to be able to play pretty much most of the year.”

That thrill comes alive every October at the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships, where Jamie returns as a fan favorite. Asked what’s really on his mind mid-match, he smiles: “First I’m thinking I want to win, and that this is an awesome place to play. It’s always special to be in front of an appreciative crowd who’s having a great time. What’s not to love!”

Over the years, the sport has brought not just triumphs but also moments of humor. He recalls one match when “it started raining on about half the field. One half was sunshine and the other was bucketing down. Rode from one into the other!”

If he could build a dream team, Jamie would start close to home.

“My dad, Carlos Gracida, and Ginger Baker, who was the drummer in a band called Cream.”

That music connection is no coincidence.

Jamie grew up immersed in the industry; his father famously signed Pink Floyd in their early days. Asked to name a favorite, he says, “I’d say Money from Dark Side of the Moon .”

Though he loved the drums himself, Jamie knew where his true path lay.

“I wasn’t cut out to be a rockstar. Polo player was always going to be the way forward.”

However, music remains a part of his world.

“I was only young when my dad signed George Michael, but having grown up seeing my dad working with him and what he went on to achieve was pretty spectacular. One of the greatest singer-songwriters the UK has ever produced.”

Off the field, Jamie is producing Everyone’s Everest, a veterans-based feature documentary following Sally Orange, a retired Army British Major and mental health campaigner.

Returns

November 8–9, 2025

The Captain of the Wales Polo Team calls it “the best polo event in the world.”

Whether you’re after luxury, leisure, or somewhere in between, you’ll find your place at America’s most-attended polo event.

This year promises to be a polo experience like never before with beloved traditions like live performances, exotic car displays, and exclusive new additions.

On the green, PVCL’s Nadine Bubeck will join Oscar De las Salas as the emcees for the annual fashion show- always a crowd favorite and one of the most stylish moments of the weekend.

Expertise You Can Trust In Digestive & Liver Health

“Along with a friend called Marcos and Budhi, a former Queen’s Gurkha orderly, we founded a charity called Friends of Nepal. Through this I became an exec producer on the project.”

Seeing Sally’s story gain attention, including a recent interview with Kelly Clarkson, fills him with pride.

“It’s fantastic. She is an inspiration. She deserves it and is doing it just to raise awareness and money for these amazing charities.”

Still, nothing quite compares to the adrenaline of polo itself.

“They are different kinds of feeling, both very satisfying, but nothing beats the adrenaline of going 35 mph on a horse in a close game when it’s on the line. That is some rush!”

When he isn’t on a horse or working in music, you might catch him on the golf course with friends. Pre-match, his focus is simple: “Make sure all my equipment and horses are ready to go and then just getting in the right mindset. I love that feeling of being nervous before a game when it means something.”

He admits to no lucky charms, but plenty of rituals, like always doubling up on kit.

“Gotta be prepared going out to the polo party!”

As for post-match, nothing beats tradition.

“It’s gotta be a good Argentine asado, proper post-polo dinner!”

Of all the places polo has taken him, the carnival in Brazil ranks high for off-field fun; but right now, he’s looking forward to Scottsdale.

“The event is spectacular, the guests are having a great time, and everyone is super friendly. Scottsdale is a brilliant place to visit, so very much looking forward to it.”

Whether it’s routine screening or complex liver care, Dr. Anil Seetharam brings academic-level precision, a gentle bedside manner, and a passion for prevention.

DEBUNKING THE Sample Sale

Sample sales come with myths: chaotic warehouses, one-off tiny sizes, racks of outdated rejects. Kelly Rickard, founder of Arcadia Sample Sale, is proving otherwise. Her Valley shopping experiences deliver current designer collections- often still fullprice online- in luxe settings like a $15M Paradise Valley estate. Cocktails, raffles, music, and racks curated with sizes XS–XL make the experience feel more fashion event than bargain hunt.

What exactly is a sample sale?

“A pop-up event to score designer clothing at a fraction of retail. Ours include overstock, canceled orders, and sometimes true showroom samples. But everything is new, never preloved.”

What’s the biggest misconception?

“That the clothes are outdated or damaged. At Arcadia Sample Sale, you’ll find pieces still live online full-price. And no... it’s not all size zero. We stock multiples across sizes.”

“70%-90% off retail. Customers will Google a piece on our racks and see it’s still full price online. Many leave with a $700 dress for $100.”
HOW ARCADIA IS REDEFINING LUXURY POP-UPS IN THE VALLEY

So no digging through bins?

“When people picture sample sales, they imagine chaos. Our racks are curated. Our venues are upscale. Think cocktails in an exclusive setting... not women wrestling over a dress in a warehouse.”

How did Arcadia Sample Sale begin?

“I emailed Mara Hoffman when she left fashion. Minutes later, she replied from NYC. Three weeks later, I had wired funds for 5,000 pieces of her final collections. I couldn’t sleep trying to figure out how to move that much inventory, so I launched a sale. From wire transfer to first event was 3.5 weeks.”

How has it grown since?

“Our turnout keeps doubling. IG and our email base have quadrupled. Now designers are reaching out to us. We’ve hosted Agua Bendita, Celia B, Baobab, retrofête, Adriana Degreas, Omika, and even brand-new accessories from The Row, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, and Chloé.”

What kind of deals are we talking?

“Seventy to ninety percent off retail. Customers will Google a piece on our racks and see it’s still full price on Shopbop. Many walk out with a $700 dress for under $100.”

What’s the shopper experience like?

“We host sales every 4-6 weeks from September through May. Expect lines at opening, but we restock all day. We offer fitting rooms, but wear workout clothes so you can try on faster. The best part? So many pieces are under $100... it’s hard to leave empty-handed.”

Why do you think the Valley was ready for this?

“Phoenix didn’t have a true sample sale culture like L.A. or Dallas. But so many people have moved here from those cities and craved it. Once they experienced our events, the word spread fast. Now it’s become a must-attend for the Valley’s fashion crowd.”

What’s next for Arcadia Sample Sale?

“Every event is fresh because inventory changes week to week. We’ll keep curating, keep elevating. The goal is simple: bring the Valley world-class designers in an experience that feels stylish, not stressful.”

CORALTREE RESIDENCE COLLECTION

THREE WAYS TO LIVE

HAWAII, CORALTREE STYLE

The CoralTree Residence Collection sits in that sweet spot hotels and vacation rentals can’t quite reach. Hotels are glamorous, but can be cramped for space. Vacation rentals give you space, but often without consistency or service. CoralTree blends the best of both: privately owned residences in world-class destinations, managed with the polish of luxury hospitality, yet designed to actually live in.

We’re talking chef’s kitchens where families gather for breakfast, washer/dryers that save you from packing mountains of clothes, multiple bedrooms with doors you can actually close, and several bathrooms that make mornings seamless. Living and dining areas offer space to stretch out, and lanais frame views so beautiful, they set the rhythm for your day. It’s luxe, yes... but it’s smart, especially for families.

Here’s what it’s like to actually stay.

Mala Ocean Tavern

KAANAPALI ALII, MAUI

Mornings at Kaanapali Alii start with Kona coffee on the lanai, as the sound of waves sets the mood. A memorable moment: kids running down to the sand barefoot, chasing the foam as if it were a game invented just for them. The beauty of Alii is that you don’t have to plan every second; the beach is your backyard. The waves just outside are perfect for boogie boarding- thrilling enough for teens, but playful enough for younger kids learning to ride. By mid-morning, gravitate toward the pool, where a waterfall feature becomes a playground, or sneak off for a workout or a tennis match. Lunch happens around the community grills, where neighbors share tips on where to snorkel next, and someone always seems to be flipping fresh fish. By afternoon, wander to Whalers Village for shave ice or browsing shops. Evenings in paradise are picturesque. Catch the sunset as you cook dinner in the kitchen, open every sliding door, and let the trade winds fill the room. With multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, everyone has their own space to retreat. It doesn’t feel like a hotel stay... it feels like a temporary slice of Hawaiian home.

Tip: Experience Lahaina’s dining gems, Mala Ocean Tavern and Coco Deck. Lahaina welcomes you with open arms, and there’s no better way to soak it in than with brunch at Mala Ocean Tavern, perched right on the water, or a sunset cocktail at Coco Deck. These sister restaurants aren’t just beloved by locals and visitors, they’re award-winners. At the 2025 ‘Aipono Awards, Mala Ocean Tavern earned Gold for Best Oceanfront Dining and multiple Silvers, including Most “Maui-est” and Restaurant of the Year. Honorable mentions highlighted their handcrafted cocktails and innovative menu. Insider pick? Coco Deck’s Poke Donut: a fried dough topped with fresh ahi poke, Kula onion, spicy mayo, soy glaze, and sesame.

MAUNA LANI POINT, THE BIG ISLAND

Arriving at Mauna Lani Point feels like stepping into a movie. Lava fields, emerald fairways, and suddenly- the ocean crashing against cliffs so dramatic it silences everyone in the car. By breakfast, get seated on your private lanai, watching waves slam into black rock like a private show.

Kids will beg to head straight to the Mauna Lani Beach Club, a white-sand cove tucked into the coast. It’s pool-like... calm and perfect; a bay ideal for swimming. They’ll snorkel for hours, faces pressed into the water, surfacing only to squeal about spotting schools of fish. When hunger strikes, towel off, grab a table at Napua Restaurant, and eat fresh poke bowls overlooking the ocean.

Back “home,” the afternoon is slow: a dip in the pool or a nap in the living room. By evening, gather at your personal dining table, grilling local fish as the sky explodes in color. With expansive villas featuring multiple bedrooms, full kitchens, and private lanais, Mauna Lani Point distills the Big Island into one seamless experience- untamed beauty softened by the comfort of a residence that feels truly yours.

WAILEA BEACH VILLAS, MAUI

Wailea Beach Villas is where Maui goes glam. The first time the private elevator doors open into your private penthouse, your heart will skip a beat. Floor-toceiling windows frame nothing but blue ocean, and the kitchen... sleek, sprawling, fully stocked, and chef-ready... feels like the centerpiece of a home designed to impress. Multiple bedrooms and bathrooms make it effortless for families or groups to spread out in comfort.

Wailea days are indulgent in the best way. Rise early to snorkel in Wailea’s crystal-clear waters, when visibility is sharpest and spotting sea turtles feels almost guaranteed. Kids race to the family pool while adults sneak off to the infinity-edge for a moment of quiet. Midday, slip through a private gate into The Shops at Wailea: ice cream for the kids paired with, perhaps, a little Gucci browsing.

Back at the villa, evenings are pure magic. Witness a pink-skied sunset on Wailea Beach, one of the best in the world, and dive the waves at dusk. While there are plenty of options to dine out, you won’t want to leave your impressive abode; cook dinner in that dreamy kitchen, then step onto the lanai to watch the stars take over the sky. When the kids close their eyes in their own bedrooms, pour one last glass of wine, savoring a version of home you’ll never want to leave.

WHY CORALTREE WORKS

CoralTree offers more than a stay... it’s the luxury of living well. Space to breathe, freedom to linger, and details that matter: kitchens, laundry, real bedrooms. Not catered excess, not roughing it, but the best of both. For families, it’s comfort and beauty combined; a smart way to travel. coraltreeresidencecollection.com
