The Architect of Gratitude
ARTICLE BY AJ JONES
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAYTON JONES PHOTOGRAPHY
Dr. Tauheed Burke has built a life and career on a foundation of service and a profound sense of gratitude. From his military service to his work as a financial professional and his tireless efforts in community philanthropy, his journey is a testament to the power of giving back. In a month dedicated to

“Exceeding expectations means rising from a place where the light at the end of the tunnel feels invisible.”
thankfulness, we sit down with Dr. Burke to explore how his unique perspective has shaped his life, his work, and the communities he serves.
Dr. Burke’s story is filled with moments where a single “thank you” sparked a movement. In a recent interview with NOVA Lifestyle , Dr. Burke shared a pivotal moment: “A friend hosted a community event, honoring those who raised us. That evening, I saw something powerful in their eyes, the look of people who had been waiting to feel seen and appreciated.” Inspired, Dr. Burke launched the Cherry Hill Hall of Fame, immortalizing the names and faces of local heroes in the Cherry Hill Wellness Center. “Their legacy now lives on. Their impact echoes through generations and their stories will never be forgotten.”
In a world obsessed with money and celebrity, Dr. Burke’s definition of success is refreshingly different. “Exceeding expectations means rising from a place where the light at the end of the tunnel feels invisible,” he says. For him, the Hall of Fame is not about trophies; it’s about honoring those who triumphed over adversity, sending a clear message to the next generation: Your past does not define your potential.
Dr. Burke’s book, Succeed Anyway!, champions gratitude as the secret sauce for resilience. “The number one way to teach is through your actions,” he insists. “If you want to reach the next level in life, you must first be thankful for where you are.” He’s seen time and again that adversity builds character and sharpens purpose. “Gratitude doesn’t just elevate your spirit. It prepares you for elevation.”

Financial success, in Dr. Burke’s view, begins with a grateful mindset. “When you live in gratitude, God opens your heart and mind to new possibilities,” he explains. Gratitude isn’t just a feeling; it’s a force that transforms vision into reality. True wealth, for him, means living abundantly, giving generously, and growing wisely. This daily recognition of blessings and commitment to respect, he believes, brings abundance.
Life hasn’t spared Dr. Burke its hardest lessons. He lost his beloved brother; his greatest pain transformed into his greatest motivation. “Every time I faced adversity, I looked at that picture and reminded myself: ‘You’re not going through anything more difficult than what your brother had to endure.’ His memory pushes me to rise, to lead, and to live with purpose.”
Few events embody Dr. Burke’s philosophy better than the DMV Awards & Fashion Show Gala. As he shared with NOVA Lifestyle, these events are about far more than just fashion. “The models, the media, the designers, and the sponsors all played a significant role in making this a historic moment. I want to show appreciation because they didn’t have to do it.” The Gala is a testament to unity, bringing together diverse communities to celebrate achievements and inspire giving. The energy of the Gala is palpable, blending entertainment with purpose. “When people saw that we cared and didn’t need anything in return, that’s when the movement started,” Dr. Burke explained. The event showcases how gratitude can be a powerful catalyst for community building, inviting everyone to partake in the joy of giving and celebrating together.
“The seeds you plant now may bloom in places you’ll never walk, but they’ll grow because you chose to give.”

Dr. Burke credits much of his growth to his children and to the quiet blessings of daily life. “One of my greatest blessings is being a father to four incredible children. Healthy in both body and mind. That alone is a miracle I never take for granted. When you choose to see life through that lens, everything changes.”
How do you make thankfulness “cool” in a world of instant gratification? “By creating platforms that are fun, exciting, positive, full of energy, and infusing them with impact,” Dr. Burke says. He believes that when gratitude is shared with purpose, it becomes a movement.
Dr. Burke reminds us that true charity often costs nothing: “A phone call, a kind word, a
prayer, or simply showing up can leave a lasting impact.” For him, impact begins with intention and grows through action.
Despite his many achievements, Dr. Burke treasures the unexpected gifts: “There’s something humbling about strangers thanking me. Not just for what I’ve done for them, but for someone they care about. The seeds you plant now may bloom in places you’ll never walk, but they’ll grow because you chose to give.”
Dr. Burke envisions communities measured by gratitude indexes rather than economic metrics. “When we succeed together, we generate wealth. Not just financial, but emotional, spiritual, and communal.”

Thanksgiving will soon be upon us, and it’s the perfect time of year to reflect on all that we should be grateful for.
This time of year, I seem to become a bit contemplative. Maybe it is the shorter days, or the cooler temperatures, or the holiday feel, but something makes me slow down and reminisce on how much we must be thankful. So many of us are lucky to have a warm, happy place to call home, dinner on the table, and strong family relationships but we cannot forget that this is not the reality for all of our Town and County residents. In fact, a warm place to call home or dinner on the

table are anything but certain for too many people. There are many different ways we can help our struggling neighbors.
Every year, the Town hosts the Freeze Your Gizzard 5K race at Ida Lee Park. It’s not only a great opportunity to get some exercise in before Thanksgiving Day, but it serves as a major fundraiser for our charity partner Loudoun Hunger Relief. Monetary donations to support the food pantry will be accepted online or at the race itself. The Freeze Your Gizzard Race is set for Saturday, November 22, at Ida Lee Park, with the 5K race beginning at 9:00 a.m. You can find out more about the race at leesburgva. gov/departments/parks-recreation/events/freeze-your-gizzard
If you’re not able to attend the race or want to support Loudoun Hunger Relief in other ways, whether by donating food items or volunteering yourself, I encourage you to check out the nonprofit’s website at loudounhunger.org .
There are so many ways to help during this season of giving. One very significant nonprofit is Loudoun Cares. The Loudoun Cares’ website is a great resource for finding local volunteer or giving opportunities in Loudoun County. You can visit their website at http://www.loudouncares. org for more information.
I hope you take the time this season of giving to reflect on how fortunate we are to live or work in Leesburg. I wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Open any financial publication or scroll through your favorite news feed, and you're bound to see headlines like: "Here's How Much You Need to Retire in 2025" or "The Average 401(k) Balance by Age." These articles often suggest tidy, round numbers as savings benchmarks. But do these numbers truly matter if they don't reflect your unique lifestyle?
Retirement isn't about hitting a national benchmark; it's about knowing your personal "number" – the amount you need to live the life you envision. Everyone's situation is different, and your retirement number depends on your lifestyle, expected spending, and income sources.
Here’s a quick guide to personalizing your retirement plan:
• Define Your Expenses: What do you plan to spend monthly or annually in retirement?
• Assess Debts: Will your mortgage or loans be paid off?
• Plan Activities: Do you want to travel or support family?
• Stress-Test Your Plan: Have you considered market downturns or unexpected costs?
• Evaluate Social Security: Understand how it fits into your broader financial plan.
ARTICLE BY CHAD SIGMON, AJ JONES PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF INTEGRATED WEALTH ADVISORS
Think of your retirement as a three-legged stool, with each leg representing a crucial income source:
1. Social Security: A reliable but often overestimated source.
2. Employer Pensions: If available, these can provide a stable income stream.
3. Personal Savings/Investments: Essential to fill any gaps. If one leg is short or missing, the stool wobbles, highlighting the importance of a balanced approach.
Alternative Perspective: Not everyone can rely on pensions, making personal savings even more critical. If you do have a pension, it might not cover all your needs, so filling in the gap with your savings is essential.
Additionally, consider tax diversification. Roth accounts, for instance, offer tax-free withdrawals in retirement, which can be strategically beneficial.

When searching for a financial advisor, seek more than just investment guidance. Look for a team that can help you visualize your ideal retirement, beyond the national average.
• Goal-Oriented Approach: Your financial team should focus on your goals, not just your balances.
• Comprehensive Planning: Look for tax-efficient withdrawal strategies, income management, and charitable planning.
• Long-Term Partnership: Choose a multi-generational team that can support you throughout every phase of your retirement journey. Your retirement number should be unique to you, aligning with your goals and resources. If you’re not sure, partnering with the right financial advisor can help craft a personalized strategy.

ACTIONABLE TIPS:
• Start by journaling your retirement vision.
• Consult with a financial advisor for a customized plan.
• Regularly update your strategy as your goals evolve.

EMBRACE YOUR JOURNEY AND CELEBRATE YOUR GROWTH
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AJ JONES

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s all too easy to overlook the quiet strength and resilience we each possess. We’re often our own harshest critics, quick to downplay our achievements while magnifying our shortcomings. But what if we took a moment to flip the script? What if we paused to acknowledge the fortitude we’ve shown, the lessons we’ve learned, and the growth we’ve experienced over the past year? Writing a thank you note to yourself is a powerful act of self-care, an opportunity to celebrate your journey with compassion and gratitude. Let’s explore what that might look like.
Dear AJ,
This year has been a whirlwind of challenges and triumphs. Remember those moments when you felt like the world was spinning just a little too fast? Yet, here you are, standing tall. Thank you for the resilience you’ve shown through the ups and downs.
There were days when uncertainty loomed large, especially when you faced health issues that tested your spirit. It wasn’t easy, was it? You endured the discomfort and anxiety that came with each doctor’s visit and every uncertain diagnosis. But you navigated through it, sometimes with grace, and sometimes just by holding on tight. And that was enough. Your strength in those moments is something to be proud of.
Don’t forget the small victories, the ones that might seem insignificant to others but meant the world to you. Like prioritizing time for self-care. Whether it was indulging in a long bath, reading a favorite book, or simply sitting in silence, these moments were small yet significant acts of love towards yourself.
This year, you embraced a new skill: caring for the lawn. Who knew that tending to your garden would become such a rewarding endeavor? It taught
you patience, the importance of nurturing, and the satisfaction of seeing your efforts literally blossom. Your lawn is now a testament to your commitment and care, a vibrant patch of green that reflects your growth and dedication.
Reflecting on these experiences, it’s clear that every challenge faced and skill gained has contributed to your personal evolution. Each step you’ve taken, no matter how small, has led to a greater understanding of yourself and your capabilities. You’ve shown that with perseverance and self-care, growth is always within reach.
So, here’s to you. The person you were, the person you are, and the person you are becoming. Thank you for your courage, your compassion, and your commitment to growth. I’m grateful for every step of this journey, and I promise to keep cheering you on.
With love and appreciation, -AJ
Writing your own thank you note can be a transformative experience. It’s a chance to reflect on your journey and honor your personal growth. Here’s how you can start:
• Reflect on Challenges: What was a difficult moment you overcame? How did you show resilience during that time?
• Celebrate Small Wins: What are some small victories you achieved this year?
• Acknowledge Growth: What new skills or perspectives did you gain?
• Express Gratitude: How can you express appreciation for the person you’ve become?
Start by jotting down your thoughts and let the words flow. Remember, this is your personal note, so let it be authentic and heartfelt.
“Here’s to you. The person you were, the person you are, and the person you are becoming.”

THE ALEXANDRIA TURKEY TROT: A COMMUNITY AFFAIR
For over four decades, the Alexandria Turkey Trot has drawn runners of all ages to the charming streets of Del Ray.

Gobble Up Fun and Fitness with Virginia’s Feathered Festivities
Participants embark on a five-mile journey, surrounded by cheering locals and live music. This event isn't just about running; it's about community spirit and a sense of togetherness. Fun Fact: Did you know the Alexandria Turkey Trot is one of the largest Thanksgiving Day races in the region, typically drawing over 5,000 participants?
The Marine Corps Turkey Trot 10K is more than just a race; it's a spirited showcase of military tradition, fitness, and community at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Held each November, this event is part of the broader Marine Corps Marathon family, which has been inspiring runners and building goodwill since 1976.

• The tradition of Turkey Trots dates back to the late 19th century, with the first recorded race taking place in Buffalo, New York, in 1896. Since then, these races have spread across the U.S., becoming a staple of Thanksgiving celebrations.
• The Marine Corps Marathon, known as “The People’s Marathon,” was founded to promote goodwill post-Vietnam and showcase the skills of the Marine Corps.
• Since its founding, the marathon has grown to include multiple races, including the Turkey Trot 10K, Kids Run, and even satellite races for Marines stationed abroad.
• The headquarters for all events moved to the Marine Corps Base Quantico in 1982, cementing the base as the heart of Marine running traditions.
TURKEY
• Scenic and Secure: The course winds through the historic grounds of Quantico, offering runners a rare view of military landmarks and the disciplined spirit of the base.
• Military Pride: Many participants run in military gear or patriotic attire, and Marines are often on hand to cheer, guide, and encourage runners through every mile.
• All Ages & Abilities: The Turkey Trot 10K is open to runners of all levels. Families, seasoned athletes, and first-timers all share the course. Some pushing strollers, some aiming for personal bests.
• Part of a Legacy: The Marine Corps Marathon Organization is dedicated to promoting physical fitness and inspiring the next generation of runners. These events are known for their exceptional organization and military precision.
• Community & Camaraderie: Beyond the finish line, you'll find a lively atmosphere with music, refreshments, and a chance to connect with Marines and fellow runners. The event fosters goodwill between the military and civilian communities.
Fun Fact: The Marine Corps Turkey Trot 10K often features participants running in full military gear, adding a unique twist to the traditional race attire!
WHY
Turkey Trots have become a delightful Thanksgiving tradition across the nation. They offer a chance to connect
with family and friends, stay active, and give back, as many races support local charities. There’s no better way to start Thanksgiving than with a run, making that pumpkin pie taste even sweeter!
• Training Tips: Start preparing a few weeks in advance by incorporating short runs into your routine. Gradually increase your distance to match the race length.
• Buddy Up: Find a friend or family member to train with. Having a partner can make the experience more enjoyable and hold you accountable.
• Embrace the Festive Spirit: Many participants dress up in turkey-themed costumes or festive attire, adding an element of fun to the event. Consider a costume that allows you to run comfortably.
• Register Early: These races are popular and can fill up quickly.
• Dress Appropriately: Layer up for warmth, and don't forget your festive turkey-themed gear!
• Stay Hydrated and Fueled: Have a light breakfast and hydrate well before the race.
• Enjoy the Experience: Take in the sights, enjoy the company, and remember to have fun!

A classic, beautifully roasted Prime Rib is a magnificent choice for a Thanksgiving main course. It promises a festive, impressive meal that will delight all your guests. Here is a recipe for a perfect HerbCrusted Prime Rib with Red Wine Au Jus. This recipe uses the popular high-heat sear followed by a low-and-slow roast method to achieve a gorgeous crust and a perfectly medium-rare center.
SERVINGS: 6-8 (for a 4 lb roast)
PREP TIME: 3 hours (mostly resting time)
COOK TIME : Approx. 1.5 - 2 hours
For the Prime Rib:
• 1 (4-5 lb) bone-in or boneless
Prime Rib Roast (Standing Rib Roast)
• 2 Tbsp kosher salt (plus more for initial salting)
• 1 Tbsp fresh cracked black pepper
• 4 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
• 2 Tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped
• 1 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped
• 2 Tbsp olive oil
For the Red Wine Au Jus:
• Pan drippings from the roast
• 1 cup dry red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot recommended)
• 2 cups beef stock (low sodium)
• 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
• Salt and pepper to taste
EQUIPMENT
• Large roasting pan with a rack
• Reliable meat thermometer (oven-safe probe thermometer is best)
• Aluminum foil
• Fat separator (optional, but very helpful for the Au Jus)
“A classic, beautifully roasted Prime Rib is a magnificent choice for a Thanksgiving main course.”
ARTICLE BY AJ JONES
Step 1: Prep and Season (The most important step!)
• Bring to Room Temperature: Three hours before cooking, remove the roast from the refrigerator. Season it generously all over with kosher salt (about 1 Tbsp). Place it on the rack in the roasting pan and let it stand at room temperature for at least 2-3 hours. This is crucial for even cooking.
• Make the Herb Crust: In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1 Tbsp kosher salt, black pepper, minced garlic, chopped rosemary, chopped thyme, and olive oil. Mix to form a paste.
• Apply the Rub: Pat the roast dry with paper towels. Rub the herb mixture evenly all over the top and sides of the roast.
Step 2: High-Heat Sear
• Preheat: Set your oven to a high temperature: 450°F.
• Sear: Place the roast, fat-side-up and bone-sidedown (if applicable), into the preheated oven.
• Roast for 15 minutes to create a flavorful, browned crust.
Step 3: Slow Roast to Finish
• Reduce Heat: After the initial 15 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 325°F. Do not open the oven door during this step.
• Insert Thermometer: If you are using an ovensafe probe thermometer, insert it into the thickest part of the roast, avoiding the bone.
• Continue Roasting: Continue roasting until the thermometer registers 5-10 degrees below your desired final internal temperature.
• Rare: Pull at 115°F
• Medium-Rare (Recommended): Pull at 120° −125°F
• Medium: Pull at 130°F
Step 4: Rest and Carryover Cooking
• Remove: Once the roast reaches the desired “pull temperature,” remove it from the oven immediately and transfer it to a clean carving board.
• Rest: Tent the roast loosely with aluminum foil. Allow it to rest for 20-30 minutes. The internal temperature will continue to rise by 5-10 degrees (this is called “carryover cooking”). This resting period is critical for the juices to redistribute, ensuring a tender and moist roast.
• Step 5: Make the Red Wine Au Jus
• Deglaze: Place the roasting pan (with the pan drippings) over a burner set to medium-high heat on your stovetop. If there’s excessive fat, you can pour some off, reserving about 2-3 tablespoons of fat and all the browned bits (the fond).
• Add Wine: Pour in the 1 cup of red wine. Use a wooden spoon to scrape up all the flavorful browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer and let it reduce by about half.
• Add Stock: Pour in the 2 cups of beef stock and 1 Tbsp of Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer again and reduce slightly (about 5-10 minutes) until the sauce is flavorful.
• Finish: Pour the Au Jus through a fine-mesh sieve or a fat separator (if using) into a small serving bowl or gravy boat. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
Step 6: Carve and Serve
• Carve: After resting, remove the kitchen twine (if used) and slice the roast against the grain into ½ inch thick slices.
• Serve: Serve immediately with the Red Wine Au Jus and your favorite Thanksgiving sides!
“This recipe uses the popular high-heat sear followed by a low-and-slow roast method to achieve a gorgeous crust and a perfectly medium-rare center.”

Forget complicated tofurkeys and lackluster vegetable sides. These Roasted Cauliflower Steaks are here to be the showstopping vegetarian centerpiece your holiday table deserves. Thick-cut, savory, and roasted until perfectly caramelized, they’re seasoned with traditional Thanksgiving spices like thyme and poultry seasoning to ensure every bite complements your classic side dishes. This recipe is simple to execute but delivers a flavor and presentation that feels every bit as special as the main event.
Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 30 minutes | Total time: 40 minutes
Yields: 4 large steaks (plus extra florets)
For the Cauliflower Steaks
• 1 large head of cauliflower, firm and with a sturdy core
• cup olive oil (or melted butter/vegan butter)
1. Preheat and Prep
• Preheat your oven to 400°F.
Thanksgiving Seasoning Blend
• 1 tsp poultry seasoning
• tsp dried thyme
• tsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp salt
• tsp black pepper
• Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Prepare the Seasoning
• In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil (or butter), poultry seasoning, dried thyme, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Set aside.
3. Cut the Cauliflower Steaks
• Remove the tough outer green leaves from the cauliflower but leave the core intact. The core is crucial for holding the slices together.
• Place the cauliflower stem-side down on a cutting board.
• Slice the head vertically into 1 to 1 ½ -inch thick “steaks”, starting from the center. You should get 2 to 4 intact steaks.
Pro-Tip: Roast any loose florets alongside the steaks.
4. Season and Roast
• Place the cauliflower steaks (and florets) on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer, ensuring they are not crowded.
• Using a pastry brush, liberally brush both sides of the steaks with the seasoned oil mixture.
• Bake for 15 minutes.
• Remove the tray, gently flip the steaks, and brush with any remaining oil mixture.
• Return to the oven and roast for another 15–20 minutes, or until the cauliflower is fork-tender in the center and has golden-brown, caramelized edges.
5. Finish and Serve
• During the last 3 minutes of cooking, take the tray out of the oven.
• Serve immediately as a stunning vegetarian centerpiece.
Serving Suggestion
Serve on a bed of mushroom gravy, or alongside your traditional mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. The flavor profile is designed to be a perfect complement to a classic Thanksgiving feast.
The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful. To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.
• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark.
• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.
• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand.
• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.
• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.

Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh
• Clean your home completely. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.
• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.
• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating.
Prep Meals & Set the Table
• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.
• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go. Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free.
• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.
• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.
• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum.
• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough.
• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.
• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!
• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.
