The Brightest Gift of All

Forget the calendar; you feel the moment the world shifts, gilded in the light of good intentions. The atmosphere is unmistakable. The world seems to glow with twinkling lights, holiday cheer, and a renewed sense of genuine good intentions that makes this season so special.

The holiday season, we’re reminded, isn't found in a perfectly wrapped gift or an immaculate dinner party. It's found in the intentional, generous effort we make for one another. We’re honoring that giving spirit this December, dedicating our issue not just to celebrating, but to Giving.

This issue offers a meaningful deep dive into the heart of our community. We take you to the exquisitely decorated town of Middleburg, VA, where we explore the unique history and charm that makes their annual celebrations a true spectacle. It's a lovely reminder that the most charmed places are often those that put the most charm in.

In these pages, we celebrate the artisans, the hoteliers, and the neighbors who embody this ethos. You’ll meet the visionaries behind the luxurious Salamander Resort & Spa, who transform their grand estate into an intimate, warm sanctuary. We've spoken with leaders who remind us that the greatest luxury is not in what we buy, but in the time, we choose to share and the spirit we choose to foster. From intimate family traditions to grand community parades, every story is a testament to slowing down and appreciating the beauty of place.

But the true gift, as it always is, remains time. This year, we hope to inspire you to gift yours with intention. Why is this season so profoundly special? Because we instinctively grant ourselves a much-needed pause. We trade the frantic acceleration of daily life for the restorative, quiet joy of being softer, kinder, and profoundly present. It’s the rare, collective moment where we consciously set aside demands, truly focus on the people we cherish, and offer the simple, yet profound, statement: "I'm glad you're here."

So, settle deep into your favorite armchair and pour a cup of something worthy of the moment. This season may your days be bright, your heart be full, and may the intentional effort you pour into others become the brightest gift of all.

RISTMAS IN MIDDLEBUR

ARTICLE BY AJ JONES
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHRISTMAS IN MIDDLEBURG
A HALLMARK HOLIDAY DREAM COME TRUE
“Part of the magic is just letting yourself be here.”

EXPERIENCING THE ENCHANTMENT

Where the vineyards meet the bridle paths, Middleburg isn't just a town; it’s the quintessential Christmas setting, the kind of place that would make even the most stoic Grinch's heart grow three sizes. This small town, renowned for its equestrian heritage, boutiques, and luxury resorts like Salamander Resort & Spa, transforms into an enchanting holiday wonderland each December. Often described as a "Hallmark Christmas Movie" town, Middleburg offers an authentic, heartwarming escape that feels like stepping into a snow globe.

To capture the true spirit of this transformation, we spoke with Mayor Bridge Littleton about the town's traditions, beauty, and commitment to the community.

EMBRACING THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT

As the holiday season approaches, Middleburg puts on its festive best. The town's historic buildings are immediately

adorned with twinkling lights and lush garlands, creating a beautiful, sophisticated tapestry against the cool winter sky. Storefronts are transformed into detailed holiday showcases, featuring elaborate window displays that tell seasonal stories, with thick wreaths and flowing ribbons adding a touch of authentic holiday charm to every corner.

Mayor Littleton points visitors directly to the town's most beautiful spot, stating: "The most picturesque holiday spot and decorations are found at The Middleburg Museum at the Pink Box, a historic building just off Washington Street, which also hosts the Town Christmas Tree." It is here that the towering town Christmas tree, glittering with lights and ornaments, serves as a central gathering spot for the community

The town’s commitment to capturing and sharing the true spirit of Christmas is evident in every detail, from the carefully placed lanterns to the organized carolers

who gather on corners. This dedication makes Middleburg a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic and genuinely heartwarming holiday experience, one that is built on community rather than commercialism.

"We are committed to sustainability," Mayor Littleton notes, explaining the town's efforts to maintain its pristine landscape. "We use natural greenery, encourage walking and shuttle use during major events, and partner with local groups to reduce waste. Stewardship of our landscape is part of our identity."

This festive transformation is brought to life by its residents and reflects the community's core values and GIFTS (Giving Inspiration and Fostering Traditions thru Service). The generous spirit of the volunteers is the invisible magic that holds the entire event together, ensuring that the holiday cheer is shared freely and inclusively with all who visit.

THE HEART OF THE HOLIDAY: THE HUNT & PARADE

The absolute highlight of the Christmas season in Middleburg is the annual Middleburg Hunt & Hounds Review and Christmas Parade. This beloved tradition, held on the first Saturday of December, has been a staple of the town's holiday celebrations for over 50 years. The Middleburg Hunt & Hounds Review begins with mounted foxhunt riders in traditional scarlet hunting attire on magnificent horseback parading through the town alongside a lively pack of hounds, trotting gracefully down the street. It’s a breathtaking sight, evoking images of a bygone era and setting the stage for the festivities to come.

The parade itself is a personal moment for the town's leader. "Each year the Town Council and I begin the parade carrying a banner down Washington Street, welcoming everyone to town," Mayor Littleton shares. "The energy, kindness and joy of the crowds is incredible and inspiring. It reminds us just how special our community is."

Following the spectacle of the Hunt, the main Christmas Parade delights visitors for hours. This mile-long procession features a unique assortment of vibrant, creative floats entered by local businesses and nonprofit organizations, enthusiastic carolers from local choirs, spirited marching bands, and a diverse range of animals. The finale, of course, is a special appearance by Santa Claus himself, who traditionally brings up the rear in a beautiful, antique horsedrawn coach, waving to the thousands of onlookers. The entire parade is a joyful, unifying celebration of spirit, heritage, and pure holiday cheer, drawing both locals and international visitors together in a shared moment of winter wonder.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE: QUIET MOMENTS AND PLANNING

While Middleburg's high-energy holiday charm, especially on parade day, is undeniable, some visitors may seek quieter moments amidst the bustle of the festivities. Mayor Littleton offers valuable tips for enjoying the high-traffic days: "Arriving early and planning time to stroll makes all the difference. Parking on the outskirts and enjoying the walk allows you to take in the town at a slower pace. Part of the magic is just letting yourself be here."

For the Mayor, the quiet moments are the most cherished: "My favorite holiday

Storytelling in the square.

tradition is walking around the town on the morning of the Parade before everything gets going and chatting with the store owners and community as they prepare for the day. You can really see the excitement and get into the holiday feeling."

FINAL

MESSAGE TO VISITORS

He concludes with a final message for all who visit: "Come ready to slow down, breathe in the fresh winter air, and feel welcomed into a community that cares deeply about its traditions. Middleburg is not just a destination, it’s an experience of warmth, history, and true holiday spirit, it's something we live, and not simple to do."

A HOLIDAY HOME

at Salamander Middleburg
Holiday elegance defined. The grand Living Room at Salamander Resort is perfectly dressed for the season.

For a truly transportive holiday experience, look no further than Salamander Middleburg in Virginia’s historic horse country. Under the visionary guidance of Founder and CEO Sheila Johnson, the resort transforms into a magnificent, warm, and personal celebration of the season. It’s more than just a luxury destination; it’s an elegant, inclusive country home, steeped in tradition and genuine joy.

The distinctive atmosphere at Salamander is no accident; it is carefully curated to reflect Johnson’s own personal history and values. The most successful integration, according to Johnson, is the emphasis on family gatherings.

“Family gatherings were a big part of my childhood, and we have always emphasized the importance of this at Salamander Middleburg through our programming and spaces,” she shares. “Our warm, intimate atmosphere has become a hallmark of the resort during the holidays, and I love to see families come together to celebrate.”

The centerpiece of the season! This stunning Christmas tree makes the elegant ambiance of Harrimans even more captivating.

This warm, inviting sensibility is most evident in the resort’s central gathering space. Johnson insists that this area is never referred to as a “lobby,” but rather the resort’s living room, a name that immediately establishes a sense of domestic comfort and familiarity.

“What I cherish most is the overall transformation of the resort’s living room during the holiday season,” Johnson explains. She views this space as truly reflective of her own living room on a larger scale. The entire area is designed to evoke the comfortable elegance of a family home, featuring majestic décor, two roaring fireplaces, and a stunning central Christmas tree. This massive, beautifully decorated space becomes the

founder’s signature decoration; not a single item, but the overall effect that instantly wraps guests in a blanket of holiday cheer and magic upon arrival. This dedication to creating a sense of home is critical to the resort’s success. It moves the experience beyond transactional luxury into the realm of shared memory-making, fulfilling the deepest desire of holiday travel: to find comfort, connection, and joy.

While the lavish amenities are part of the draw, Director of Sales & Marketing Doug Camp notes that the most authentic and memorable holiday moments at Salamander are the ones that are truly priceless and cannot be packaged or sold. That “unsellable” moment is the resort’s connection to the local community’s

signature event: the Middleburg Hunt Parade. This long-standing tradition, a spectacular sight featuring riders on horseback, foxhounds, and antique carriages, is truly a highlight of the season.

“One of the most authentic and priceless holiday experiences is the iconic Middleburg Hunt Parade,” says Camp. “Many describe it as feeling like a scene straight out of a Hallmark movie.”

The resort ensures that this experience is accessible to all guests. After they attend the parade in the historic town of Middleburg, guests are invited back to the Salamander Grand Lawn, where the festivities continue. Here, they are treated to live music, gather around holiday-themed barbecues and wine tastings, and warm up next to cozy fire pits. This seamless blend

of the resort’s luxurious amenities with a century-old town tradition creates memories imbued with the genuine, historic spirit of the area.

Of all the holiday seasons, Johnson identifies one recurring, candid moment that captures the deepest sense of Christmas joy for her personally: the tree lighting ceremony. “Without a doubt, our tree lighting ceremony is incredibly important to me. It’s truly magical and is a true community event,” she says. The simple, sincere joy of watching children’s faces light up as the thousands of lights flicker on, followed by the sound of Christmas Caroling, is an irreplaceable moment that roots the resort firmly in the spirit of the season. It is a moment of collective awe and pure, unplanned happiness.

Even after the crowds have dispersed, the quiet ambiance is cherished by the staff who create it. Camp’s personal favorite quiet spot to take a breath and appreciate the magic is the Grand Lawn, where he can view the spectacular night sky and soak in the crisp country atmosphere, appreciating the glow of the resort’s creation against the backdrop of the serene Virginia landscape.

Beyond providing an exceptional holiday stay, Salamander Middleburg carries the unique significance of being an award-winning, Black-owned luxury property. During the holidays, a time focused on family, heritage, and legacy, this distinction takes on added importance.

Johnson views the resort’s year-round commitment to fostering an inclusive and inspiring environment as central to its mission. That welcoming, joyful, and diverse atmosphere is maintained and celebrated during the festive season.

“By emphasizing a welcoming, joyful atmosphere grounded in our core values, we hope to demonstrate that diversity enriches our shared experience,” Johnson states. The goal is to inspire the next generation. Not only of travelers but also of hospitality leaders, to recognize that excellence and luxury can, and should, be built upon a foundation of inclusion. The very existence of Salamander Middleburg as a world-class institution led by a Black woman serves as a powerful, festive beacon of achievement and opportunity.

In every detail from the roar of the living room fire to the joyful singing during the tree lighting, and from the welcoming of the community hunt parade to the silent twinkle of the lights on the Grand Lawn; Salamander Middleburg is a place where holiday elegance is fused with genuine heart. It’s a holiday haven built on the enduring foundation of family, tradition, and a deep commitment to hospitality that truly makes every guest feel like they have come home for Christmas.

Delivering Joy with “Santana Claus”

OF THE 89 WAYS TO GIVE FOUNDATION

Santana Moss, former NFL player, philanthropist, and founder of the 89 Ways to Give Foundation.
Carmen Felder, philanthropist, and President of the 89 Ways to Give Foundation.

For a decade, the sight of Santana Moss (#89) streaking across a football field was a source of excitement for Washington fans. Now, as a Leesburg resident and familiar face in Northern Virginia, the former NFL wide receiver is channeling that same energy into a different kind of drive: the mission of the 89 Ways to Give Foundation.

The foundation's name is a clear nod to the jersey number Moss wore during his prolific career, but the mission goes far beyond the gridiron. Moss started his charitable work long before his NFL debut, driven by a profound empathy for children growing up in unstable environments. His vision, which now anchors the foundation, is simple yet powerful: to inspire hope, create everlasting bonds, enhance quality of life, and empower everyone in our community. For Moss, giving back is about providing the stability and belief that enables children and families to pursue their own dreams with hard work and integrity.

While 89 Ways to Give supports the community year-round with events like its annual celebrity golf tournament, the holidays are a critical time when the foundation truly shines. The signature festive event is the "Santana Claus" Toy Drive. This initiative transforms seasonal generosity into tangible joy for local children who might otherwise go without. These events are more than just a donation drop-off; they are community gatherings that celebrate the spirit of the season with a memorable twist on the traditional figure. These efforts ensure that local families and children in the area he made his home while playing for Washington, receive the joy and hope they deserve during Christmas.

The greatest gift is participation and the foundation offers straightforward, impactful ways for local

residents to get involved and embody that spirit of giving. President Carmen Felder emphasizes: "The spirit of the 'Santana Claus' drive is all about community showing up for community. We encourage everyone, whether you're an individual, a local business, or a sports team to find your way to give. Every single action creates an unforgettable moment for a local child." The foundation sets an ambitious goal of directly serving 1,000 families by leading this annual campaign to collect and distribute toys, according to Felder.

Join the celebration and support the mission at the "Santana Claus" Toy Drive on Thursday, December 12, 2025, from 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM at Aston Martin & Bentley in Ashburn, VA. Entry to the event is a $50 monetary donation or an unwrapped toy.

• Flexible Giving: If you can't stay for the evening event, you can still participate! You are welcome to simply drop off a toy donation at the Aston Martin location without staying.

• Donation Methods: The foundation accepts donations in many forms, including Cash, Credit/ Debit Card, Mobile Pay, and Check. Contributions enable the foundation to continue its core mission throughout the year.

• Spread the Word: Moss believes strongly in the power of inspiration. Simply sharing the foundation's mission and encouraging others to find their own "way to give" helps amplify their impact.

Santana Moss may be done scoring touchdowns on Sundays, but through 89 Ways to Give, he continues to win; not just for himself, but for countless families across Northern Virginia, making the holiday season brighter for everyone.

“His vision, which anchors the foundation, is simple yet powerful: to inspire hope, create everlasting bonds, enhance quality of life, and empower everyone in our community.”

Corner

I don’t know how it happened so quickly, but the Christmas holiday season is almost here. This time of year is so enchanting. The twinkling lights in the downtown area, the wonderful displays at the outlet mall and the decorations that make each neighborhood bright and warm, these are few of the things that make living in Leesburg so special this time of year.

BY
BURK, AJ JONES PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOWN OF LEESBURG
Mayor Kelly Burk at age five, beaming with her enormous white teddy bear from Santa. A timeless Christmas memory!

We have so many residents from different cultures that generously share their December holiday celebrations: Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, Winter Solstice, New Year’s Eve. Each of these holidays is special to those who celebrate them. I am so honored to have shared in so many of these holiday events with families and friends. Thanks to everyone who opens their homes, synagogues, mosques and churches and invites me in.

Christmas is the holiday my family celebrates. It was always a very special time for me, and I have many memories of those holiday celebrations. My father would take my brother and I out to the church Christmas Tree lot. Our older brother and sisters insisted it was Kevin and I’s turn to go pick out the tree (seemed it was always our turn.) We looked forward to it, especially taking the tree home to decorate. However, my father’s aim was to go through every tree on the lot and hours later he would return to the first tree and purchase that one. We would get it home and start to decorate. The decorating began with glistening glass bulbs of which one

of us would drop and break. My mother would lament how much she paid for them and for us to be more careful. We tried! The tree would be done to all our delight and then we went to bed to wait for Santa to bring all the presents on Christmas morning.

When I was five, I wanted a “big white teddy bear” for Christmas. That was all I wanted from Santa. When I came downstairs and saw my bear, I was ecstatic with delight and joy. That bear went everywhere with me and became my best friend. I still have the bear, and I still talk to her sometimes and I will swear that she talks back to me. It is a memory I still cherish with such delight.

Mayor Kelly Burk

Leesburg has so many events to give you joy and create memories this holiday season. There is a lovely tree walk on Dec. 7 on the George C. Marshall House. Each tree will be decorated by one of the countries that benefited from the Marshall Plan. A little bit before December the Village at Leesburg will be holding its tree lighting on Nov. 15. Leesburg Premium Outlets will also hold its tree lighting ceremony on Nov. 15. There is the annual Holiday Fine Arts and Crafts show at Ida Lee on Dec. 6 and 7. There are so many wonderful vendors selling their handcrafted wares. The Town tree lighting ceremony will also be on Dec. 6 at 6:00 p.m. The Christmas parade starts at 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 13. Get your tickets for the annual Jingle Jam concert on December 12, 13, and 14 with our very talented local musicians. This show is a really special way to enjoy the music of the holidays. Leesburg Movement will be holding its Mistletoe Market on Dec. 6 on the Loudoun County Courthouse grounds. These events are organized for your enjoyment so check your calendar and join in with your neighbors and family.

I hope you will remember that the holiday season can be stressful for some of our neighbors. Please consider donating to one of your local nonprofits such as Loudoun Hunger Relief, or Loudoun Free Clinic or any other nonprofit helping our families and friends. You can help personally with a smile; it can go a long way when someone is lonely and sad. Please remember to be kind.

Let me leave you with the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “This is my wish for you. Comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warm your heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so you can believe, confidence when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to know the truth, love to complete your life.”

Happy Holidays!!

The Christmas Main Showstopper

The holidays are here, and this year, it’s time to move beyond the usual turkey or ham. We’re talking about a culinary showstopper, a dish synonymous with luxury and celebration: the Wellington. INSTRUCTIONS

1. SEAR THE BEEF:

• Pat the beef dry and season generously with salt and pepper.

• Heat olive oil in a skillet over high heat until smoking. Sear the beef quickly on all sides (about 30-60 seconds per side) to form a good crust. It should remain rare inside.

• Remove from pan, immediately brush all over with Dijon mustard, and cool completely.

2. MAKE THE DUXELLES:

• Finely chop the mushrooms, shallots, and garlic.

• Melt butter in the same skillet over medium-high heat. Add the mushroom mixture and thyme leaves. Cook, stirring frequently, until all the liquid has evaporated and the duxelles is a thick paste that holds its shape.

• Season with salt and pepper. If using, add the wine/ sherry and cook until fully evaporated.

• Spread the duxelles on a plate to cool completely.

3. WRAP THE BEEF:

• Lay a large sheet of plastic wrap on your work surface. Overlap the slices of prosciutto to form a rectangle large enough to wrap the beef entirely.

• Spread the cooled duxelles evenly over the prosciutto.

• Place the chilled beef at one end of the prosciutto/ duxelles layer.

• Using the plastic wrap to help, tightly roll the prosciutto and duxelles around the beef, creating a neat, even log. Roll it tightly in the plastic wrap, twisting the ends to secure. Chill for at least 30 minutes (or up to 24 hours).

4. ENCASE IN PASTRY:

• Preheat oven to 400 oF

• Lightly flour your work surface and roll the puff pastry into a rectangle large enough to fully wrap the beef log.

• Remove the plastic wrap from the beef.

• Brush the edges of the pastry with egg wash. Place the beef log in the center.

• Tightly wrap the pastry around the beef, sealing the seam and trimming any excess pastry. Tuck and seal the ends. Place the wellington, seam-side down, on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

• Brush the entire surface with the egg wash. Use the back of a knife to score a pattern into the pastry (taking care not to cut through).

5. BAKE AND REST:

• Bake for 30-35 minutes for medium-rare (125 oF internal) or 40-45 minutes for medium (135 oF internal) The pastry should be golden brown and crisp.

• Crucially, let the Beef Wellington rest on the baking sheet for at least 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Culinary perfection. Indulge in the rich, flaky elegance of the classic Beef Wellington— a true holiday centerpiece.
