February’s Love Local issue is a reflection of what makes Northwest Columbus feel like home — neighbors who turn care, creativity, and conviction into something that serves us all.

In these pages, you’ll meet local business owners whose work began with deeply personal journeys. One story follows a father who, searching for answers for his own family, built a brain-wellness practice offering new possibilities for those who feel overlooked by traditional approaches. Another introduces a mother whose daughter’s recovery inspired a wellness center grounded in patient advocacy and restorative care — a reminder that healing often begins with knowing you have options and feeling supported along the way.
You’ll also meet artists and stewards who believe creativity is essential to community life. Inside a historic Worthington home, a collective of local artists has transformed shared studio space into a welcoming place for connection, collaboration, and expression. It’s a powerful example of how neighbors can preserve history while shaping something vibrant and inclusive for the future. Art, in this space, isn’t just something to admire — it’s something that brings people together.
This issue also shines a light on the small shops, makers, and family-owned restaurants that give our streets character and warmth. These are the places where you’re greeted by name, where care is taken in every detail, and where passion shows up in the experience. You’ll discover hidden gems worth exploring and local spots where love can be sipped, shared, and savored — from a favorite cup of coffee to a thoughtfully chosen bottle, to a beloved gathering place returning to life.
What ties all of these stories together is intention . These businesses chose to build here. They invest here. They give back here. When we choose to support them, we do more than make a purchase — we strengthen the wellbeing, identity, and resilience of our community. We create a ripple effect that touches families, neighborhoods, and future generations.
As a member of our community that is also deeply invested in Northwest Columbus, I’m continually inspired by the heart behind these stories and by a community that shows up for its own. Thank you for loving local — not just in February, but in the everyday choices that shape the place we’re proud to call home.

In a month when we celebrate all things Love Local, some stories stand out because they’re rooted not just in business—but in personal passion and community care. Brain Tune, located in Worthington is one of them.
When owner Joe Matessa talks about his practice, he begins with his family’s story. Years ago, Joe was trying to help his son manage ADD, ADHD, and later, dyslexia. Medications left them searching for solutions that felt more compassionate and sustainable. That search led them, unexpectedly, to microcurrent neurofeedback—a technology designed to help the brain move out of dysregulated patterns and return to balance.
The change was immediate. Their son began sessions in mid-January, and by early February, teachers were noticing calmer focus, smoother transitions, and shifts that felt almost too good to be true. For Joe, that wasn’t just progress—it was a lifeline. That experience became the foundation for Brain Tune.
Many people have never heard of neurofeedback, let alone microcurrent neurofeedback. And yet, it has been quietly changing lives for decades. Traditional neurofeedback requires clients to actively engage with visual stimuli and often takes 30 to 60 sessions to achieve lasting results. Microcurrent neurofeedback works differently: it is passive, requires no active participation, and uses an ultra-low electrical current— three trillionths of a watt—to gently nudge the brain into healthier patterns. Lasting change often occurs within 20 sessions or fewer.
For families who are looking for options, or for adults who feel stuck in chronic cycles of stress, anxiety, or reactivity, this offers another way forward. And in Central Ohio, we don’t have to travel far to access it. Brain Tune is one of the only providers between Columbus and Central Ohio offering this technology, making it an extraordinary resource right here in our own backyard.
That’s part of what makes this story so fitting for February. Loving local isn’t only about supporting small businesses—it’s about valuing the neighbors who bring meaningful, life-changing services home to our community.
Walk into Brain Tune and you’ll notice something immediately—it feels calm, warm, and human. Sessions begin with a simple check-in, followed by the placement of electrodes using a gentle conductive paste. Most clients feel nothing at all as they relax during a microcurrent session, which can last up to 45 minutes.
What surprises people the most is the range of conditions Joe supports. While he expected to focus on ADD and ADHD, many of his early clients came seeking help for sleep issues, stress, reactivity, essential tremors, concussion recovery, and traumatic brain injury. For some, the improvements are measurable; for others, they’re deeply emotional—a clearer mind, steadier moods, or the return of confidence they thought they’d lost.
To enhance each client’s experience, Brain Tune incorporates Brain Gauge, a tool that tracks cognitive changes using what feel like “brain games.” Joe is currently the only provider offering it between Columbus and Central Ohio, giving our community rare access to leading-edge insight and technology.
But Joe will tell you that the numbers are only part of the story. The real heart of Brain Tune lies in the moments—the parents who see their child come back to themselves, the adults who feel clear for the first time in years, the teens who finally find their focus. For Joe, leaving a successful career with Boston Scientific wasn’t a leap—it was the natural next step after witnessing what microcurrent neurofeedback did for his own family.
“Having Brain Tune in our community means access to life-changing brain technology delivered with local heart—supporting families, healing gently, and giving people a chance to feel like themselves again.”
And that’s exactly why supporting local matters. Local businesses like Brain Tune aren’t just providing services; they’re pouring their lived experience, their compassion, and their belief in healing into the fabric of our community.
In Northwest Columbus, we are fortunate to have access to world-class brain technology delivered with small-business heart. Brain Tune isn’t part of a national chain. It isn’t designed around volume or clinical detachment. It exists because one family experienced something transformative—and wanted to make that transformation available to their neighbors.
For those seeking an alternative to medication, for those weary of feeling “stuck,” or for those recovering from injury and longing for clarity again, microcurrent neurofeedback offers a hopeful path forward. And, thanks to Brain Tune, that path is available close to home.
Joe often says that microcurrent neurofeedback doesn’t “fix” people—it simply helps their brains remember how to heal. That’s the kind of care worth celebrating in a Love Local issue.

WHY LOVE LOCAL MATTERS: Brain Tune is one of only two microcurrent neurofeedback providers in Central Ohio. Their drug-free approach supports ADD, ADHD, Autism, concussion, stress, sleep issues, and more—bringing advanced brain wellness directly to our community.

Not every date night needs to involve reservations or an elaborate itinerary. With a little creativity, you can create magical moments right at home. Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or just want to reconnect, here are three ideas for unforgettable at-home date nights.

Transform your backyard or balcony into a dreamy picnic spot! Spread out a cozy blanket, add a few fluffy pillows, and hang string lights or fairy lights for ambiance. A small fire pit or lanterns can also add a romantic glow.
Pack a picnic basket with finger foods and a bottle of wine or sparkling water. Don’t forget a decadent dessert like chocolate-dipped strawberries.
Lay back and stargaze, identifying constellations or making wishes on shooting stars. To make it extra romantic, bring a bluetooth speaker and play soft music.
Unleash your inner artists with one of these three fun and interactive dates. Grab some inexpensive canvases, brushes, and acrylic paints from the craft store. Don’t forget aprons or old clothes to protect against spills!
• Paint each other’s portraits for a mix of laughter and creativity.
• Work on a collaborative paintingeach person adds their own touch to a single canvas.
• Try a themed painting challenge, like recreating your favorite memory together. Pair this date with a cheese platter and wine and don’t worry about being “good’ at painting - it’s all about enjoying the process together.
Start the day with love by turning breakfast into an indulgent experience. Prepare a tray with a DIY breakfast charcuterie board. Include mini pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bacon, and pastries. Add small bowls of toppings like syrup, Nutella, or whipped cream.
Mix up mimosas or serve coffee with flavored syrups and whipped cream for a café vibe. Then, snuggle up in bed and watch a favorite movie or TV series.

A community-driven gallery where collaboration and creativity flourish in a historic landmark
ARTICLE BY MADISON MOROI PHOTOGRAPHY BY BETH HEISEY
The High Road Gallery: Worthington’s Creative Heartbeat Worthington is rich with history, but tucked inside one of its most significant landmarks sits something even more special—a vibrant community art space where local talent comes to life. The High Road Gallery is housed in the

Buttles-Pinney-Brown House, built in 1818 and listed on the historic register; a structure that has witnessed two centuries of Worthington’s evolution.
Founded by the late Carol Hershey, who believed deeply in nurturing creativity close to home, the gallery now thrives as a cooperative of artists who live and work right here in our community. Painters, sculptors, and printmakers create in its on-site studios, and their work doesn’t just hang on the walls—it becomes part of the neighborhood’s identity.
Today, artists Nicky Robie and Beth Heisey are at the helm guiding programming, championing artists, and shaping a new vision rooted in connection and engagement. And they are not alone. The resident artists themselves help manage the gallery, each contributing time and talent to keep exhibitions running, programs growing, and history preserved. It is grassroots stewardship in its purest form. “We’re carrying forward Carol’s legacy, but we’re also shaping a new chapter,” Heisey shares. “The artists here aren’t just creating—they’re collaborating, teaching, hosting, and inviting the community in. The High Road Gallery is becoming a living expression of what it means to belong.”
Visitors experience rotating exhibitions, each curated to spotlight the people and perspectives shaping our area’s cultural landscape. From whimsical illustrations to public art, every piece reflects the distinct voice of Worthington’s creative community.
As The High Road Gallery looks ahead to 2026, its focus is clear: art should bring people together. Small concerts, summer gatherings, school collaborations, and themed exhibitions will create opportunities to connect, learn, and participate in a creative life woven into the heart of Worthington.
In a city filled with historic architecture, this building stands apart—not just because of its 1818 bones, but because of what happens inside its storied rooms. If you haven’t stepped inside yet, consider this your invitation. Whether you’re an art lover, a curious resident, or someone who wants to feel more connected to community—this Worthington treasure is ready to welcome you in.

ARTICLE BY LISA FEDERICO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIIA CHYSTIAKOVA
When Rebecca Milnes first walked into a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, she wasn’t searching for a business idea. She was searching for hope. Her daughter—young, vibrant, and only 40—had suffered a stroke. The family faced the unthinkable: a long, uncertain recovery with no roadmap and no guarantees. Traditional medicine offered support, but it didn’t offer optimism. But as it turns out, hyperbaric oxygen therapy did.
What began as a desperate search for anything that could help quickly became a turning point. Rebecca watched her daughter regain ground doctors weren’t sure
she would ever get back. The improvements were undeniable. And as any mother would, she kept asking one question: Why wasn’t this recommended to us from the start?
That question ultimately shaped her mission.
Today, The Avenu Wellness Center stands as a testament to the belief that patients deserve options— and that self-advocacy isn’t optional in a healthcare system slow to embrace proven therapies. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, PEMF, red light therapy, and other restorative modalities have helped people with neuropathy, chronic skin conditions, broken bones, post-surgical recovery, inflammation, and more. The science is solid. The results speak for themselves. But the truth is blunt: most doctors still don’t bring these therapies into the conversation, and insurance simply won't cover them.
Rebecca refuses to let that be the end of the story—end of her daughter's story.
Instead, she has created a wellness center grounded in compassion, education, and real outcomes. Patients don’t walk in as numbers on a chart—they walk in with goals at the ready, fears in hand, and a deep desire to feel better. And they are met with therapies that support the body’s natural ability to heal, not mask symptoms.
Hyperbaric therapy itself is far from intimidating. In fact, it’s deeply relaxing. Patients rest comfortably inside the chamber with constant communication to a trained technician who monitors them throughout the session. Many people describe it as an unexpected moment of calm—a quiet pause in a noisy world.
And Rebecca is still expanding what healing can look like. Soon, The Avenu will introduce a hyperbaric chamber for pets, making it possible for owners to relax alongside their animals as they recover from injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions. It’s a natural extension of her philosophy: healing should feel safe, supported, and shared.
Every step of The Avenu’s journey comes back to one truth Rebecca learned the hard way—sometimes the path to recovery requires turning toward therapies others overlook. Patients deserve to know they have choices. They deserve to explore treatments backed by experience, results, and real human stories.
Her daughter’s story was just the beginning. The Avenu Wellness Center is everything that grew from it: a place where hope isn’t theoretical, and healing isn’t out of reach.

“My daughter’s recovery showed me patients deserve options—self advocacy matters when medicine stalls, and proven therapies can restore hope, healing, and dignity for families everywhere.”

Three local spots proving love can be sipped, shared, and savored right here at home
Love often reveals itself in the small rituals that slow us down—the warmth of a cup between your hands, the quiet courage of trying something new, the anticipation of a familiar landmark coming back to life. Here in Worthington, these moments are shaped by the people who pour their hearts into what we drink. In every latte, bottle, and pint, there’s a little bit of their story— and a chance to savor our own.

At Barrel & Bloom, it's coffee by day and cocktails at night. Scott Talmage and Jen Gerhard's new hangoutspace is all about community. Their signature Biscoff Latte captures the spirit of the café perfectly: warm, gently sweet, and quietly comforting. It’s the kind of drink that makes you exhale without realizing it—a moment of stillness in a world that rarely pauses. Linger, connect, and feel held by the simplest pleasures.

Donnie guides you not just by flavor but by feeling, helping you choose a wine that matches whatever moment you want to create. At Aardvark, every bottle becomes a memory waiting for its first sip.

Valentine’s Day is all about showing your loved one just how much you care. Rather than opting for the predictable chocolates and flowers, why not showcase your culinary prowess and create a one-of-a-kind cheesecake? Not only will this delectable treat demonstrate your affection, but it will also add a personal and luxurious touch
to the holiday celebration. Make this Valentine’s Day truly memorable by going above and beyond with a heartfelt, homemade gift. Cheesecake is the perfect dessert for two because it’s both rich and indulgent, but not too heavy. Plus, it can be easily customized to fit your own personal taste and it’s much easier than you think!
TO MAKE THE PERFECT CHEESECAKE, YOU’LL
• 1 pound cream cheese, softened
• 1 cup sugar
• 3 eggs
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract. Next, add in the sour cream and heavy cream and mix until everything is well combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared graham cracker crust and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the cheesecake is set. Let cool completely before serving.
For this recipe, we decided to add berries and honey to the top of our cheesecake. Take the time to make yours special to your relationship. With toppings such as chocolate, jelly, whipped cream, berries, fruit, or whatever your partner’s favorite is you’re sure to make them smile. Make things colorful by adding food coloring to the mix, it can even be made in
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1/2 cup heavy cream
• 1 prepared graham cracker crust
their favorite color. You can also change things up by making your own crust with Oreos or cinnamon crackers.
To elevate this recipe to the next level, consider using high-quality ingredients such as grass-fed cream cheese and locally sourced honey. For added luxury, try using a blend of different types of berries, or even substituting the graham cracker crust with a crust made of crushed pistachios or hazelnuts.
In addition to adding a variety of toppings, you can also get creative with the presentation. For example, try using a springform pan to create a heart-shaped cheesecake, or using cookie cutters to create fun shapes out of the cheesecake slices. You can also garnish the cheesecake with edible flowers or a sprinkle of edible gold dust for a truly indulgent experience.
