HOMETOWN HEART

Hometown Heart

Hello, my friends, February is often labeled the month of love, but around here, love looks a little more like connection, intention, and showing up for one another. That’s why I’m calling this issue Hometown Heart.

We open with Love Worth Sharing, inspired by something simple but powerful—a postcard from a college friend I haven’t seen in years. No algorithm. No double tap. Just a few handwritten lines that landed exactly when I needed them. It reminded me that small gestures still carry big meaning—and that love doesn’t have to be loud to be lasting. Next, we’re shaking off winter with Styled Theme Nights, featuring four easy, fun ways to gather your people and stay connected. Think Bridgerton elegance, Emily in Paris flair, and even a Winter Olympics watch party. Nothing fussy. Just good food, good laughs, and a reason to get together when cabin fever starts creeping in.

Speaking of comfort—there’s a decadent cheesecake recipe inside that feels like a hug on a plate. And because I’m always trying to better myself (or at least my home), you’ll also find an indoor plant guide. Somehow, I’ve managed to keep my Maiden Fern alive for nearly two years, which feels like a personal victory. Maybe I’ll be brave enough to add another from this list!

And while we love home, sometimes a little getaway reminds us why we love it so much. This month, City Lifestyle curated a once-in-a-lifetime epicurean escape to Yountville—nestled in Napa County and surrounded by vineyards in every direction. If food is your love language, this one’s for you.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to our incredible local business advertisers. With their support, this magazine arrives in your home free each month—and with that support we’re celebrating three amazing years (woo hoo!) of storytelling, connection, and community.

With hometown heart,

February 2026

WHY A HANDWRITTEN NOTE STILL SAYS “I LOVE YOU” BET TER THAN ANY TEXT EVER COULD

LOVE WORTH

SHARING

Somewhere between read receipts, heart emojis, and the ever-enthusiastic “adorable-heart GIF,” we lost something. Not intentionally. It just… slipped away. The handwritten note. The postcard. The simple act of slowing down long enough to put pen to paper and say, I’m thinking of you.

Digital Illustration by Kimberly Janowicz
“SHARING LOVE DOESN’T REQUIRE A GRAND GESTURE— JUST A PEN, A FEW WORDS, AND THE INTENTION TO CONNECT.”

This past year, a college roommate I haven’t seen in ages reminded me just how powerful that small act can be. She decided she was going to stay in touch with a handful of friends—not through texts or social media— but by sending postcards. And she did. One showed up, then another, each a tiny snapshot of her life that wasn’t curated, filtered, or posted for the masses. Just for me.

I kept one postcard—covered in fun stickers—and started using it as a bookmark. On a day that was not going well (you know the kind), I opened my book and there it was. That little reminder that someone, somewhere, took the time to write my name, find a stamp, and drop it in the mail. It landed deeper than any double tap ever could.

That’s the magic of handwritten notes. They show intimacy and effort. They stand out in a digital world where everything is fast, fleeting, and easily deleted. Unlike texts, notes become keepsakes—tucked into books, pinned to refrigerators, slipped into drawers to be reread years later. They communicate sincerity in a way typing just can’t. Your handwriting carries personality. Emotion. Humanity.

They even stand out in the dating world of endless swipes and short attention spans. A handwritten note says, I see you. I chose you. I took time.

And here’s the best part: it doesn’t have to be hard. You don’t need perfect penmanship or poetic prose. This isn’t a novel. One or two sentences is enough. “I saw this and thought of you.” “Thank you for being you.” “I’m really glad you’re in my life.”

It can be simple. Or fancy, if that’s your thing—pretty cards, beautiful stamps, maybe even a wax seal if you’re feeling extra. The point isn’t perfection. It’s intention.

This February, as we celebrate Hometown Heart, consider sharing the love in the most old-fashioned way possible. Write it down. Send it off. You never know whose day—or heart—you might change.

Styled Theme Nights

Because winter needs better plans

By February, we’ve all mastered staying in — but let’s be honest, it can start to feel a little too familiar. The couch knows us. The sweatpants are undefeated. That’s when it’s time to switch things up — not with a formal dinner party that requires name cards and stress, but with a fun, low-pressure excuse to get people together, light some candles, and actually enjoy each other.

Bridgerton-Inspired Tea Party

A little romance, zero pressure

This is less “proper society” and more “pretty table, good snacks, let’s have fun.” Serve tea, prosecco or champagne, and a mix of finger sandwiches and store-bought treats you unapologetically plated yourself.

Mismatched teacups, fresh flowers, and candles instantly set the mood. Add a playlist of classical covers of modern songs and you’re halfway to Diamond of the Season.

For laughs, have guests write anonymous compliments or playful “society gossip” notes, worthy of Lady Whistledown, to read out loud. A little drama is tradition, after all!

Emily in Paris (or Rome) Night

Red lipstick solves most problems.

Season five gives you options, so pick your vibe: Paris or Rome. Go French with a cheese board, baguettes, macarons, and French 75s or rosé. Feeling Italian? Think antipasto, pasta bites, tiramisu, Aperol spritzes, or negronis. Cue a European playlist, encourage bold outfits (red lipstick for the ladies still mandatory), and set up a mini photo moment with scarves or sunglasses. Chic, playful, and not even a little bit serious.

The secret? A theme. Themes give your night direction without taking it too seriously. They spark conversation, give guests permission to play along, and turn an ordinary evening into something memorable. And no, this does not require fancy etiquette or a trust fund — just good vibes, good food, and maybe a signature drink.

Pop culture is doing most of the work for us right now. Between Bridgerton romance, Emily in Paris

Cozy Olympics Watch Party

Sweatpants welcome, cheering encouraged

Hosting during the Winter Olympics is basically built-in entertainment. Ask each guest to represent a country by bringing a themed snack or dish — German brats, Canadian poutine, Italian biscotti, Scandinavian sweets… it’s international without leaving your house.

Set the room up for comfort: blankets, flexible seating, soft lighting. Hand out gold, silver, and bronze medals for funny categories (best dish, loudest cheer, most dramatic reaction), or host quick trivia and Minute-To-Win-It games during commercial breaks. Competitive? A little. Fun? Absolutely.

Local Love Tasting Night

Good taste, hometown pride

This is elevated without being fussy — which is the sweet spot. Feature local wines, beers, or craft mocktails, paired with bread, honey, chocolates, or cheeses from nearby favorites. Add simple table cards, sharing where everything comes from, to spark conversation.

For the finale, host a blind tasting and vote for favorites. It’s casual, interactive, and a reminder that some of the best things don’t come from far away — they come from right here.

energy, and the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan, inspiration is everywhere! Whether you’re sipping tea, popping champagne, cheering for athletes, or sampling local favorites, February becomes less about the cold and more about connection — with a little style and a lot of laughter.

Because the best gatherings aren’t perfect. They’re fun. And that’s the point.

VALENTINE’S DAY CHEESECAKE

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASSIE SUPPES

Valentine’s Day is all about showing your loved one just how much you care. Rather than opting for the predictable chocolates and flowers, why not showcase your culinary prowess and create a one-of-a-kind cheesecake? Not only will this delectable treat demonstrate your affection, but it will also add a personal and luxurious touch to the holiday celebration. Make this Valentine’s Day truly memorable by going above and beyond with a heartfelt, homemade gift. Cheesecake is the perfect dessert for two because it’s both rich and indulgent, but not too heavy. Plus, it can be easily customized to fit your own personal taste and it’s much easier than you think!

TO MAKE THE PERFECT CHEESECAKE, YOU’LL NEED:

• 1 pound cream cheese, softened

• 1 cup sugar

• 3 eggs

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup sour cream

• 1/2 cup heavy cream

• 1 prepared graham cracker crust

Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract. Next, add in the sour cream and heavy cream and mix until everything is well combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared graham cracker crust and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the cheesecake is set. Let cool completely before serving.   For this recipe, we decided to add berries and honey to the top of our cheesecake. Take the time to make yours special to your relationship. With toppings such as chocolate, jelly, whip cream, berries, fruit, or whatever your partner’s favorite is, you’re sure to make them smile. Make things colorful by adding food coloring to the mix, it can even be made in their favorite color. You can also change things up by making your own crust with Oreos or cinnamon crackers.

To elevate this recipe to the next level, consider using high-quality ingredients such as grass-fed cream cheese and locally sourced honey. For added luxury, try using a blend of different types of berries, or even substituting the graham cracker crust with a crust made of crushed pistachios or hazelnuts.

In addition to adding a variety of toppings, you can also get creative with the presentation. For example, try using a springform pan to create a heart-shaped cheesecake, or using cookie cutters to create fun shapes out of the cheesecake slices. You can also garnish the cheesecake with edible flowers or a sprinkle of edible gold dust for a truly indulgent experience.

INDOOR PLANT GUIDE

Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits

Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home. “There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.

ANTHURIUM:

Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.

HOPE PEPEROMIA:

This cascading plant is gaining popularity due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.

“Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.”

This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Pro tip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again.

DESTINATION DELICIOUS

Looking for a once-in-a-lifetime epicurean experience? Yountville, which is nestled into Napa County with vineyards in every direction, is a treasure trove of foodie greatness at every turn. Here is how to take a bite out of it all.

RH YOUNTVILLE RESTAURANT

The flashy, splashy RH Yountville is hard to miss as it takes up nearly a full block along Yountville’s ultra-walkable downtown. The Restoration Hardwareowned property is a wine, food, and shopping mecca comprised of five separate experiences—an indoor/ outdoor restaurant with a glass roof surrounded by 100-year-old olive trees and adorned with dramatic crystal chandeliers; a two-story wine-tasting space with its own share of crystal chandeliers and a sleek limestone bar; a limited-production wine center; an espresso bar; and a boutique design gallery grander in scale than even its ever-so-lavish sister property at the Scottsdale Quarter in Scottsdale.

Award-winning chef Brendan Sodikoff leads the kitchen, sourcing seasonal ingredients from nearby farms and using them as inspiration for both whimsical, shareable, and New American fare, as well as twists on comfort-food classics. His team allows vegetables to shine right along with proteins, making it the perfect place for all diets. There are at least 40 wines by the glass on the menu at any given time, many from neighboring wineries. The expertly trained staff has pairing suggestions—be they wine, craft beer, or craft cocktails—for each dish, offering recommendations based on guests’ palates and preferences over trends and their personal tastes. RH.com/yountville/restaurant

TASTING ROOM TREATS

Yountville’s many wineries and vineyards toss out tradition—bellying up to a bar for a flight of wine with crackers to cleanse the palate or a basic meat and cheese board—in favor of interactive foodie fun when it comes to its tastings.

Handwritten Wines , for example, offers a Breadand-Butter Experience. During the 90-minute seated event, guests can enjoy white truffle potato chips and Bouchon Bakery baguettes, along with multiple mouthwatering artisan butters. The butters are handmade to complement five of the winery’s most awarded varietals that are made on the Napa Valley hillside and most coveted vineyard blocks. HandWrittenWines.com

Priest Ranch , which is next door to Handwritten, boasts a Bacon and Wine Tasting. A must if you love meat and wine, the 90-minute experience marries four wines with its own bacon, each of which has been flavored with everything from honey to harissa to Italian herbs to bring out distinct notes in the wine. PriestRanchWines.com

Silver Trident Winery, across the two-lane street from Priest Ranch and Handwritten—so a one-minute walk— is home to what it calls the Potato Chip Extravaganza. True to its name, those who book this crunch-tastic tasting are treated to five types of potato chips, each sourced from a small producer. Each chip comes with a glass of wine to accompany it. The combination will take your taste buds on a magical mystery tour of flavor. SilverTridentWinery.com

JCB Tasting Salon , approximately 300 feet from Silver Trident, is home to a Caviar and Sparkling Wine Pairing. This dive into the ultimate in decadence pairs four high-end sparkling wines with four distinct artisanal caviars. Prepare for bubbly effervescence and over-the-top indulgence. JCBcollection.com

Chandon is nearly a mile from the others, but well worth the three-minute drive. During its ambitious Epicurean Experience, chef Juan Cabrera highlights the beauty of bubbles by pairing his favorites with five precisely plated works of culinary art. Chandon.com

Baldacci Family Vineyards sits at the intersection of Yountville and Stag’s Leap, and its Perfect Pairings program is just that. The nibble-heavy experience explores the science of how wine and food amplify each other, and even offers suggestions of what to pair with your personal favorite bites and sips. ROMANTIC RESORT RESTAURANTS

As one might imagine, all the accommodations in the region drip luxury, but Hotel Yountville, Bardessono Hotel and Spa, and North Block Hotel stand out, thanks in great part to their dining options.

Hotel Yountville , just steps from more than a dozen tasting rooms and boutiques and built using river rocks from the nearby Napa River, has elegance to spare—and that extends to Heritage Oak, its signature eatery. Guests in the know always arrive prior to their reservations for killer craft cocktails (and adult popsicles!) at the Y Bar before being seated for elevated comfort food infused with wine country sophistication. HotelYountville.com

Bardessono Hotel and Spa is approximately two blocks from Hotel Yountville. The striking, sprawling LEED Platinum Certified property, situated within its own vineyard, is committed to providing a lavish experience for guests and diners within a sustainable environment. Its world-renowned Lucy Restaurant & Bar—named for the Bardessono family’s matriarch—serves up craveable farm-to-fork dishes with global flair, using ingredients from the hotel’s orchards, on-site certified organic farming garden, and similarly minded farms and purveyors across the region. Bonus: The dog-friendly restaurant also has a menu for pups. Bardessono.com

North Block Hotel, which is nearly next door to RH Yountville, features all things wood-fired and wonderful at its primarily al fresco Restaurant at North Block. Beyond the gorgeous grilled main dishes, North Block is a happy hour hot spot thanks to its daily Oyster Hour, where fresh oysters are just $1, as well as a local craft beer selection and seasonally changing menu of scrumptious sourdough pizzas. NorthBlockHotel.com

CELEB CHEF SUPPER CLUB

No gourmet guide to Yountville would be complete without some stargazing. Many of the world’s most celebrated celebrity chefs sharpen their knives and showcase their skills in Yountville.

French Laundry helped put the region on the map. The prix fixe spot—named by Anthony Bourdain as the best restaurant in the world—is one of the only restaurants to hold three Michelin stars. Every dish tells a story, and every visit is unique. Founder Thomas Keller is a veteran of several Food Network shows, a staple of talk shows, and a guest judge on Top Chef. FrenchLaundry.com

Mustards Grill , a casual, yet elegant spot, is known for American fare and is named to honor Napa’s yellow mustard flowers that provide vital nutrients to the vines. The restaurant is covered in them, save for the space carved out for its organic garden. Its founder is bestselling cookbook author and Top Chef: Masters contender Cynthia Pawlcyn. MustardsGrill.com

Bottega Napa Valley excels at bold Italian flavors in a dizzyingly delicious setting complete with dreamy stone fireplaces and glass chandeliers. Emmy® award-winning chef Michael Chiarello helms Bottega, always seeking to authentically connect guests with the flavors from his family’s roots in Southern Italy. BottegaNapaValley.com

Bistro Jeanty brings the French countryside to Yountville. The brainchild of Michelin star and James Beard Award-winner Philippe Jeanty, the bistro has been a Napa staple since 1998. Today, Philippe’s daughter Camille continues his legacy, creating each menu as an homage to her father’s favorite childhood food memories from his native France, and diners taste the love in every bite.
