For the Guys

Dear Neighbors,

This issue is near and dear to my heart as my Dad has always played such a huge role in my life. From my early memories of going to the hardware store with him, following him around the house helping with projects, to later coaching my softball team. I remember making two egg sandwiches on toast, wrapping them in a paper towel and stuffing them in my softball mitt. I don’t think that mitt ever lost the smell of eggs. My dad taught me how to adventure, he taught me how to work hard, he grounded me with a sense of pride for taking care of my family. From his gentle humble persona to his larger than life smile my Dad has always been a comfort and leader I’ve looked up to and shaped my own life after.

My intention with this issue is to celebrate the strength of our masculine counterparts. With the many men we spoke to this month, so many gave tribute of their greatness to strong female partners and the path their father laid before them. We need the protector, comfort and grace of men to round us out. To hold us when life is hard and to sometimes, lead the way.

This month we were lucky to sit down with Coach Kyle Whittingham for some insight into his idea of fatherhood, leadership and what being a man is. We also were inspired by Ben Fogel, owner of Epic Fitness and cancer survivor. I think to many, when you hear those words, it takes your breath away. Ben found his. We also wanted to inspire men to find a deeper connection with others. Belonging is so important to thriving in life. Sometimes, men don’t have much camaraderie outside of work or family. We looked for a super manly idea that inspires adventure and connection. We think you’ll be excited to hear about the community EuroUtah Sports has been fostering for years now. From taking care of your beard, building the ultimate garage, designing your gym routine for better golf swings or spending time with Dad out back on the Traeger, we hope we’ve inspired some reasons to linger longer and feel a deep sense of gratitude for these strong, compassionate leaders in our lives.

Join me in celebrating all the great dads that have blessed our lives, families and careers.

Much love,

June 2024

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY WHITTINGHAM FAMILY

OUTSIDE OF RECORD-BREAKING WINS ETCHING HIS NAME IN UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HISTORY, COACH WHITTINGHAM ON FATHERHOOD, LEADERSHIP, AND MORE

OFF-FIELD WITH COACH

MUST SEE | SPORTS + RECREATION 12

Whittingham's football triumphs suggest it's his top priority, yet closer inspection reveals family and values hold far greater weight.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY MAKES A GREAT LEADER?

Consistency with your dealings day after day as your best self. You can't be too high and you can’t be too low.

“IF YOU’RE BLESSED WITH CHILDREN, NURTURE THEM AND BE A GOOD HUSBAND.”

WHAT IS THE GREATEST THING YOU’VE LEARNED FROM COACHING ALONGSIDE YOUR FATHER, FRED WHITTINGHAM?

Wow, I learned so much from him. I would say having integrity; place a premium on that. He also instilled a strong work ethic, and to exhibit those traits in all aspects of life.

WHAT DOES BEING A MAN MEAN TO YOU—WHAT TRAITS ARE MOST IMPORTANT?

Being a man means being a man of your word—backing it up with action. It also means being a good father. If you’re blessed with children, nurture them and be a good husband as well. Be supportive of your wife. It’s a 50/50 partnership; don’t try to run the whole show. Show up and don’t cower in difficult situations—in your family life or elsewhere.

You also want to make sure you build a good culture one brick at a time, which includes treating everyone fairly with no politics or hidden agendas.

YOU’VE COACHED AT UTAH A LONG TIME, WHAT DOES COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU?

I love this community. I’ve been in this state for 50 years, of that time 30 plus years in the Salt Lake area. The stability that the University of Utah provided for me and my family is a huge plus for us. My kids grew up with the same school system at the same school district their entire lives. Most coaches with that many years have made over 10 moves already. Just grateful.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR FAMILY?

Being together, just spending time together. There’s 20 of us now, including 10 grandkids—eight years to two weeks old. Nothing is better than family.

YOU’RE AN AVID ATHLETE, PLEASE TELL US MORE…

I enjoy exercising and really don't think I could have coached this long without having a good exercise regimen. I do it for the mental aspect of it as much the physical—I believe it’s kept me going through all these years.

As far as hobbies, skiing is the top of the list. Every chance I get, it quenches my soul.

I did get into golf later in life, at 50, and enjoy being on the course although I wouldn’t say I’m any good. I play doubles tennis, and I’m crazy about motorcycles—my wife and I love to ride up to Yellowstone and Jackson Hole.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT COACHING?

My greatest joy is seeing the players grow and develop. When you have a 17-year old kid fresh out of high school who needs work ethic but has athletic ability instilled in him—and he comes to your program and leaves with a meaningful degree, ready to be a contributor to society and prepared to be a good father—it’s very rewarding to be a part of that process.

ANYTHING ELSE, COACH?

Wherever you are, whatever your job, focus solely on that. Don't look for the other side of the fence. Everything else will take care of itself.

Surviving Cancer and Winning Life

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY

At 35 years old, world-cup bobsledder Ben Fogel was gearing up for what he believed would be the biggest challenge of his life—a second shot at the Olympics. He had more years now and knew he'd have to give it his all, but he’d proven himself before and was no stranger to pushing beyond his limits.

Training rigorously for qualifiers, Ben began to notice something was off. “I was actually training really hard and I wasn't recovering quite like I expected myself to be, [although] I was in pretty good shape,” Ben explains.

He didn’t chalk it up too much, however, and continued checking off all the boxes, including a sport’s physical.

But what was supposed to be a routine checkup revealed elevated liver enzymes and required a biopsy.

“[PRE-CANCER] I THOUGHT I HAD ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD… I HAD TWO BOYS THREE AND TWO, AND I’M LIKE, THEY’RE REALLY YOUNG.”

A week later, the doctor called.

“Are you sitting down?” the doctor asked. “You have a rare form of leukemia called large granular lymphocytic leukemia (LGL),” he regretfully told him.

Chances of survival were 50/50.

In an instant, Ben's dreams flashed before his eyes, but they weren’t about the olympics. He couldn’t stop thinking of his kids—how their lives would look without him.

“[Pre-cancer] I thought I had all the time in the world… I had two boys that were three and two, and I'm like, they're really young. They're not going to remember these moments that I'm at work for 12, 14, or 16 hours a day. I want to put in the time now so I can spend time with them when they're five, six, seven, eight and they have more memories of these times.”

But the diagnosis sparked a profound shift. He realized, “Wow, these moments are really precious."

Suddenly, he was training for the greatest race of his life, but this time it was for the team that mattered most: his wife and two boys.

Fortunately, Ben's youth and career in fitness and athleticism gave him a leg up, but there were still lifestyle changes to make, including hitting pause on his athletic pursuits and stepping back from work.

He’d stop having “cheat meals” or the occasional beer and create efficient systems that relied more on his team at Epic Fitness—the gym he’d opened a couple of years prior.

And after a two-year uphill battle, with the care of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, his family, and the community who supported him, Ben achieved remission.

But truly, he achieved much more than this. He won the gold medal of a new life.

Gratitude and presence became the cornerstone of his existence, and he developed an intentional strategy to spend his time and energy more meaningfully.

To this day, the athlete presents his dilemmas to an older and wiser version of himself.

EPIC FITNESS

Our team of fitness and nutrition professionals are invested in your health. We make every decision with our members’ well-being in mind. Achieve your goals with us!

For over 15 years Ben has been coaching people of all types and backgrounds. As a former World Cup and World Championship athlete himself, he’s learned from some of the best in the world how to be a great coach and mentor. Ben graduated with honors in Exercise Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Ben spends a great deal of his time learning, growing, and increasing his knowledge in order to benefit his clients and the Epic Fitness team. He loves seeing all of the Epic members achieve their goals! As important as anything, he lives by the concept of getting 1% better every day. It is his goal for you to get 1% better each time you step into Epic Fitness, and that is when magical things will happen!

“[I ask], ‘What would he say?’ I play that script in my mind and actually talk to my 80-year old self.”

That 80-year old self has never failed him. He continues to lend him wisdom that looks like prioritizing memories with his family over work, letting the small stuff take care of itself, and making an impact in the community.

All of which, he’s taken to heart. He joined forces with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, calling newly diagnosed patients to tell them what they could expect, but more importantly, that “it's going to be okay”—comfort only a survivor could provide.

His commitment also included a competition where he, his wife Amy, and other community members helped raise over $125,000 for the cause.

Ben’s purpose and impact extends far beyond, however— even today (seven years post-cancer).

At Epic Fitness, he cultivates a vibrant community where everyone, including cancer survivors, find friendship, support, and a path to holistic well-being.

His mantra for optimal health? "Strength training is the cheat code to athletics, bone health, longevity—it's the anti-aging code." And encourages everyone to “start where they are.”

Dedicated to strengthening “intentional community,” and in light of Amy’s recent breast cancer diagnosis, Epic Fitness’ latest outside event was to raise money for breast and cervical cancer screenings.

Grateful that Amy got screened early and caught the cancer fast, they recognized not everyone has that kind of access to healthcare and wanted to help.

As for the survivor’s advice for those diagnosed with cancer?

“No matter what the doctor says,” Ben insists, “don't let a diagnosis wreck you mentally”... “Control your mindset, control your health inputs. Become your own hero."

It turns out, life's greatest prizes aren't athletic medals but the intentional moments shared with those you love.

Our most precious commodity is time—and how we choose to spend it defines our legacy.

If you're seeking a supportive, intentional community led by a true hero, visit Ben and his team at Epic Fitness in Millcreek. You'll find far more than a five-star gym.

COLLECTIVE THOUGHTS, CHARACTERISTICS & SENTIMENTS ON HOW POWERFUL DADS ARE.

JEFF SILVESTRINI

Millcreek Mayor & Father of 2 girls

WHAT DOES BEING A MAN MEAN TO YOU?

A man is honest, loyal, resilient, caring, kind and patient. A man provides for his family, not just financially, but socially and emotionally. A man spends time with his family, he takes care of his own physical and mental health so he can be there for others.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THING YOU’VE WANTED TO INSTILL IN YOUR GIRLS?

I hoped to inspire my girls to be independent, strong, and confident in their ability to take on the world. Work hard to always be able to have choices in life and to have fun.

BIGGEST THING YOU’VE WANTED TO INSTILL IN YOUR KIDS?

I want my kids to know that they can always come to me for support no matter what life throws at them, I love them unconditionally. To value learning, hard work, and be resilient. Take initiative and be problem solvers. Through it all I want them to be compassionate and kind.

WHEN YOU THINK OF YOUR DAD, WHAT IS MOST MEMORABLE?

My dad had a reputation as being tough and intimidating, I grew up hearing countless stories about that. I still hear those stories mostly from his time as a football player and coach. But what is most memorable to me is how much he loved his family, and how he adored his grandchildren.

Chief of Police & Father of 4 girls

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THING YOU’VE WANTED TO INSTILL IN YOUR KIDS?

Work ethic. I believe the hardest working people are the most successful.  When we work hard to learn, we learn more. When we know more, we work better.

WHAT DOES BEING A MAN MEAN TO YOU?

I believe there is a unique trait in men that has been passed along from ancestors from the dawn of time to be providers and protectors.  A good man can share these responsibilities with his partner as well.  Equally, a good man can assume some of the feminine qualities of a woman to be nurturing, patient, and insightful.  Any good father seeks to master this balance and pass it along to his children.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THING YOU’VE WANTED TO INSTILL IN YOUR KIDS?

Love. Love. Love. Forgiveness, Trust, Safety, Fun, Curiosity, Compassion. Always keep your head up, eyes open, and love-lovelove...everyone, everything...and every bit of you. Everything, everyone, starts and ends with you. Love you. Love all.

HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE OPEN COMMUNICATION AND TRUST WITHIN YOUR FAMILY?

Nothing is off limits. Any thoughts, questions, concerns, curiosities, feelings, it’s open-game. Transparency and acceptance with love, sans judgment and repercussions. We talk about everything so we can talk & feel our way through anything. Together. Outside looking in, it may seem less-manly or unstructured, but inside-looking-out? That shits’ working. Take one look at my littles and show me otherwise? #RideorDie

High Performance Mindset Coach, Father of 4 boys

THINKING OF YOUR DAD, WHAT IS MOST MEMORABLE?

He was a highly impactful Navy Champlin. When the first waves off Iwo Jima were hit during WWII – my dad was on the first boat out. I asked him why, “Because that’s where I was needed. I love God and I love my Marines.” I’ve lived my life, asking where am I needed most?

BEING A FATHER OF A SPECIAL NEEDS SON, HAVE YOU CHANGED PARENTING AT ALL?

We didn’t change anything. He’s a miracle and has been such an incredible joy to our family. When he was being born, the Dr’s didn’t think he would make it, but Cathy and I did. We have always relied on God.

Your Garage Makeover

EXPERT TIPS AND MUST-HAVES TO BUILD YOUR DREAM GARAGE

A garage is a diverse, unique space. Think about it, you’re not just parking your car; it's a place where hobbies are pursued, projects are undertaken, and tools are meticulously organized.

Let’s not forget spontaneous gatherings with neighbors, cleaning off the day’s game, storing holiday treasures, the startup phase of your new side hustle; garages hold space for both lived and yet to come ambitions.

Having an organized space also adds value to your home, offering peace of mind when packing the next adventure, or grabbing a tool when you need it in a hurry. Creating the ultimate garage requires planning, we called the experts at Classy Closets to help with this project.

Omni tracks are the perfect addition to hang up larger items and keep your garage floors clear of clutter.

4/ Keep the outdoor mess where it belongs – outside the house. From washing hands to cleaning tools and gardening equipment, a garage sink streamline workflow.

The goal of any garage remodel is to transform a utilitarian space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing area. Start with a vision in mind. What components do you want? Work bench? You’ll probably want a beverage fridge for those long projects. What about holiday décor, tools for the yard, and just how many ski’s, bikes, or extensive camping equipment are you storing? You’ll also want to map out functionality as one size does not fit all when it comes to garage organization. Cabinets for those seasonal items like gardening tools, light bulbs, or paint brushes keep things tidy. SCOTT STALLINGS’ WORKOUT

Like many impressionable kids with giddy enthusiasm for their favorite sport, Scott Stallings discovered his interest for golf at the young age of 3.

But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors.

Upon realizing “that Woods wasn’t that much older than him,’’ Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best.

He trained his way through achieving allstate golfer and Dean’s List status in high school. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer.

In 2016 he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete.

ATHLETE LIFE | SPORTS + RECREATION 28

THE PRO GOLFER’S FITNESS JOURNEY

With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night.

“I came to the realization that it was no one’s fault but my own. The excuses and finger pointing led back to me, and once you take ownership, you take power in that,” Scott says.

“The voice within gave me some scary realizations that I always hated the doctor, and that they would tell me something was wrong. I learned a little information goes a long way, and that saved my health. Make one change today, and make another one tomorrow, and you’ll never look back.”

Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed.

“You only get one body,” he says.

Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life.

He still was driven to be one the best PGA Tour players and the best family guy he could be, and he would do all of the discovery, the surgeries, and the daily changes all over again to continue living his best life.

“I legitimately have some great people push me and stay around me,” Scott says.

Scott has traveled the world over, playing on some of the best courses around, from Augusta National twice, to courses across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the hope to cross the Middle East and more stunning destinations in New Zealand off his global travel list. His next “bucket list” trip?

Today, Scott happily shares healthy time with his wife and kids and is leading up The Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Junior Golf Initiative, a partnership with the Tennessee Golf Foundation to bring free junior golf to the Knoxville area.

THE WORKOUT BASICS :

KETTLEBELLS

Cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle attached to the top; ideal for exercises that combine cardio, strength and flexibility training.

BARS AND WEIGHTS

A long iron bar on which weight plates are placed. Weights come in a variety of styles, including weight plates, barbells and dumbbells.

DUMBBELLS

Short barbells, usually held in each hand

MEDICINE BALLS

Weighted balls roughly the diameter of the shoulders that are used for strength training and rehabilitation

STALLINGS’ PRIMARY EQUIPMENT: HIS TOP EXERCISES:

KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH:

Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.

KETTLEBELL HALO:

Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility— which is important for a good golf swing— and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.

CLEAN TO LUNGE:

First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.

Kissable BEARD FACE

A BEARD CARE ROUTINE GUIDELINE:

1: Wash your beard 2-3 times per week. You can use a beard wash or shampoo and conditioner.

2: Towel dry your beard gently or use a blow dryer on medium to low heat.

3: Moisturize and condition your beard with products that you love.  We always recommend doing your own research and getting familiar with the ingredients used in the product. After all you are wearing it right on your face.

4: Gently brush or comb your beard. This helps distribute your oil or balm and to help train the beard hair. We recommend using a boar bristle brush with extra soft bristles. Wooden combs are also best as they are less aggressive on your skin.

5: See your barber for beard trims at your haircut.

Remember that growing a beard takes time, patience and loving care. It shouldn’t take too much time every day to fit in a quick routine for a beard that looks amazing all day long!

At Wasatch barbershop we love to make your beard dreams come true. Routine beard trims are essential to a healthy beard. Your barber can recommend a personalized beard routine and products for your skin and beard type that fit your lifestyle.  We currently use alcohol free Barbudo beard products, available scent free or in a variety of amazing smells.
