Wishing you Joy

The Gift of Joy

December has a way of reminding us that joy often comes in simple, generous forms—a smile shared across a dinner table, a neighbor’s porch glowing with lights, or a moment of stillness between the rush of gatherings. This issue celebrates the gifts that make our island community so special: kindness, creativity, and connection.

As the year draws to a close, we shine a light on those who give their time, talent, and heart to others— from local businesses that inspire festive style and gracious entertaining to the nonprofits and volunteers who lift our spirits all year long. It’s a season to celebrate generosity in every form—acts big and small that remind us of the goodness around us.

Thank you to our readers, partners, and neighbors who make Mercer Island City Lifestyle a true reflection of our community. Your stories and support continue to inspire us every month.

Here’s to sharing light, giving joy, and welcoming a bright new year filled with gratitude.

Warmly,

December 2025

MIHS MEAN GIRLS Shine ON Stage

The stage is set at Mercer Island High School as rehearsals wrap up for this fall’s musical, Mean Girls. For months, students have been working every day after school and a few long weekends — perfecting songs, rehearsing choreography, running lines, building sets, and working tech. Now, it’s time to share it with the community.

Director Katy Ramsey says the show captures both the fun and the challenges of high school life.

“At its heart, Mean Girls reflects how difficult it is to navigate ‘Girlworld,’” Ramsey says, pointing to Rosalind Wiseman’s book that inspired the original film. “High school has its academic challenges, but the true challenges lie in a complex social system with its own ever-shifting rules. Our production seeks to uplift that struggle and at the same time laugh at the absurdity of high school.”

WHY THEATRE MATTERS

Although Mean Girls is famous for its sharp humor and iconic one-liners, Ramsey emphasizes that the process of putting on a show is about much more than the story on stage.

Live theater by MIHS Drama for all to enjoy

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Director Katy Ramsey working with cast on stage

“Theatre is a safe space,” she explains. “Our department’s motto is ‘Creativity is our passion. Inclusion is our philosophy. Diversity is our strength. Drama is our language.’ The basic shape of theatre is the circle. Every single person on a production is vital to maintaining that shape; no one is on top. We are only as strong as our weakest link.”

That philosophy shows up in every part of the production. Students take on lead roles, ensemble work, tech crew, lights, and sound. Parent and community volunteers also pitch in to raise funds  and support the show. Ramsey says everyone’s contribution matters equally.

A GIFT FOR THE COMMUNITY

More than anything, Ramsey hopes the Mercer Island community will see the show as a gift.

“What we do in theatre is come together to create a gift for our community,” she says. “These students—cast and crew—get together every single day for three months to create a vibrant, professional show in order to communicate something they believe in, something they feel has value for this current moment. They would love it if you would come and receive the gift they prepared for you.”

SHOW DETAILS

Mean Girls: High School Version opens Thursday, November 13, 2025 and runs for two weekends: November 13–15 and November 20–22 at the MIHS Performing Arts Center. Evening shows begin at 7 p.m., with Saturday matinees November 15 and 22 at 2 p.m.

Audiences can expect big musical numbers, quick humor, and the kind of energy only a high school cast can bring. And while the story pokes fun at cliques, it also points to something deeper—the value of being yourself and finding true friends who accept you for who you are.

Content warning: The production includes references to bullying, peer pressure, and mature themes. Recommended for ages 13 and up. Viewer discretion advised.

Happy Holidays!

As the holiday season unfolds, I am especially grateful for the trust, support, and friendships of our Mercer Island community! Thank you for allowing me to be part of your story and your home journey.

Wishing you a season filled with warmth, laughter, and meaningful moments — and a new year filled with peace and possibility. Cheers to 2026!

Kelly was amazing from the first email and in every way possible through the entire process. Seriously, we reached out to three agents via email asking them to represent us in the sale of our house. And just based on her email response, we knew she was easily the best choice! Kelly’s deep involvement in the Mercer Island market meant she had an overwhelming attendance at the broker open house. The next day we had three offers! Kelly negotiated perfectly but fairly and we were supremely pleased with every interaction with her and her team. Highly recommend!” – S.D., Mercer Island

DENISE MORIGUCHI CARRIES UWAJIMAYA’S TRADITION INTO TOMORROW

THE NEXT COURSE

Denise Moriguchi, CEO | Uwajimaya

For Mercer Islander Denise Moriguchi, food has always been more than sustenance, it’s a language of connection, heritage, and belonging. As CEO of Uwajimaya, she continues a family story that began nearly a century ago, one that has nourished both body and community across generations.

“WE

BEYOND THE AISLES

Under her leadership, Uwajimaya remains true to its roots while evolving with the rhythm of modern life. Denise understands the people who shop there — busy professionals, young families, and fellow Islanders who crave both authenticity and accessibility.

HONOR TRADITION WHILE CONNECTING TO THE NEXT GENERATION.”

Uwajimaya’s roots trace back to 1928, when Denise’s grandfather, Fujimatsu Moriguchi, started a small family business built on the belief that food could bring people together. That vision expanded in 1962, when he brought Uwajimaya to the Seattle World’s Fair, introducing Northwest audiences to the tastes and stories of Japan.

“From day one, Uwajimaya never saw itself only as a Japanese grocery store,” Denise says. “It’s always been about removing barriers and helping people understand each other through food.”

That spirit of openness was carried forward by her father, Tomio Moriguchi, who guided Uwajimaya through decades of growth — evolving it from a specialty market into a beloved Pacific Northwest institution. Today, Denise continues that stewardship with the heart of a bridge-builder and the clarity of a next-generation leader.

Her own approach to cooking mirrors that mindset.

“How do I make a fancy dinner in under 30 minutes?” she laughs. “When I want to feel like a chef — that’s where Uwajimaya really shines.”

From sashimi-grade fish ready to slice to hidden gems like kasuzuke cod — a sake-marinated delicacy that channels Nobu-level flavor with a simple broil — Uwajimaya helps customers discover the joy of Japanese home cooking, even on a weeknight.

The store is a culinary treasure chest, full of surprises that make exploring its aisles feel like travel itself. Even a Japanese Kit Kat bar, Denise says, can be an entry point — a playful reminder that culture can be shared in the sweetest of ways.

CHAMPIONING LOCAL VOICES

Denise’s vision extends beyond the shelves. She sees Uwajimaya as both a

custodian of culture and a platform for Asian-owned small businesses that are redefining the Northwest food scene.

She lights up when talking about Hood Famous, a local Filipino-founded bakery whose ube cheesecake, mango, and espresso desserts have become local favorites. “We love celebrating the next generation of Asian-American makers,” she says. “They’re part of the story, too.”

This spirit of collaboration keeps Uwajimaya relevant, not only preserving heritage, but nurturing new cultural entrepreneurs and taste explorers alike.

Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow

Denise carries her family’s legacy with quiet pride and forward momentum. As a Mercer Islander, she finds joy in balance — family, leadership, and the constant discovery that comes from both food and community.

When I mentioned a trip to Japan, she smiled and suggested teamLab Borderless in Tokyo, an immersive digital art experience that fuses technology, creativity, and culture. It wasn’t just a travel tip; it revealed how naturally she connects people to ideas that bring meaning into everyday life.

That same sensibility runs through Uwajimaya. Denise blends art, innovation, and tradition, creating a place where curiosity meets culture, and where everyone can feel at home.

In Denise’s world, every shelf tells a story of generations, gratitude, and the shared experience of good food. And like her grandfather and father before her, she continues to prove that the best meals and the best communities are built on connection.

A New Era, Navigating Wealth

WHAT THE NEW TAX REFORM MEANS FOR YOUR LEGACY

Matt Tabler, Founder Chris Rotberg, CFP

When I first read about the new tax reform passed on July 4, 2025, I turned to someone I trust for clarity: Matt Tabler, Founder of Pinnacle Private Wealth Advisors. Matt has long emphasized that real wealth is not just about accumulation—it’s about clarity, intention, and living with purpose. With that lens in mind, we discussed the practical impacts of the new tax reform, bringing some of the most significant changes to tax and estate planning in over a decade. Here are key takeaways from that conversation, shaped by insights from both Pinnacle and broader financial research:

Opportunity Zones: Recharged and Relevant

One of the most immediate planning opportunities under the new tax reform is the revitalization of Opportunity Zones (OZs). Investors can now defer capital gains until 2032, and receive a 15% basis step-up if they hold the investment for at least seven years. For those holding unrealized gains and looking to align long-term growth with community reinvestment, this offers a meaningful tool. As Matt put it, “We’re seeing a new window open—where smart investing and meaningful impact can truly align.”

Estate Planning: Revisit, Rethink, Reframe

The new tax reform significantly reduces lifetime gift exclusions and changes the way inherited assets are taxed—moves that could upend long-standing estate plans.

Matt advises families to take a fresh look at their legacy strategies. “This isn’t a tweak—it’s a shift,” he noted. “If you haven’t reviewed your estate plan in the last six months, now’s the time. These changes could materially impact how your wealth is preserved and passed on.”

Executive Compensation & Business Succession

High-earning professionals may see new tax treatment of deferred comp plans and retirement contributions, while business owners face updates to pass-through entity rules and succession planning structures. Matt emphasized the need to assess cash flow models and ownership structures now: “These changes could affect how and when you exit your business—and how much value stays with your family.”

Charitable Giving: Strategize Early

Starting in 2026, itemized charitable deductions will be capped at 35%, and a new 0.5% AGI floor will be introduced.

That means less room for high-net-worth donors to offset income through giving. 2025 offers a window for accelerated gifting before the new rules take effect. Donor-advised funds (DAFs) and gift bunching remain vital, offering flexibility while locking in current-year deductions. On the bright side, non-itemizers will now benefit from a new above-the-line deduction—$1,000 for individuals and $2,000 for couples—opening the door for broader participation in charitable giving.

Planning With Purpose

As Matt shared during our conversation, “The [new tax reform] isn’t just a policy update. For many families, it’s a call to sharpen their vision, align their values, and be more proactive than ever.” Whether you’re managing a family office, preparing for retirement, or planning your philanthropic legacy, this is a moment to pause, assess, and act with intention.

Holiday Sparkle & Shine

HOLIDAY RADIANCE WITH BARB HOVSEPIAN: STYLE CONFIDENCE

Holiday Radiance with Barb Hovsepian: Style, Confidence & the Season to Shine

When it comes to effortless elegance, no one embodies the art of looking and feeling your best quite like Barb Hovsepian. As the creative force behind POSH Style Consulting and Au Courant Hair & Beauty, Barb brings a signature blend of warmth, precision, and chic to every client she touches. Her holistic approach begins with personal style discovery—understanding your lifestyle, color palette, and confidence goals—and continues through customized wardrobe curation, makeup artistry, and hair design that capture your authentic glow.

This holiday season, Barb invites you to embrace the sparkle: from polished winter palettes to party-ready blowouts and refined makeup looks that photograph beautifully under twinkle lights. Whether you’re stepping into a festive soirée, hosting family celebrations, or simply craving a moment of self-care, Barb and her expert team craft a look that feels timeless yet right on trend.

At POSH and Au Courant, beauty is never just surface-deep—it’s about radiating joy, poise, and presence. Because when you feel your best, you give your best—and that’s the most beautiful gift of all.

This holiday season celebrates exuberance, self-expression, and unapologetic glamour. From head to toe, it’s all about making a statement with confidence and joy.

Let your hair tell a story with volume, movement, and a touch of adornment. Let your makeup glow, shimmer, and catch the light in all the right ways. And when it comes to fashion, embrace rich textures, dramatic silhouettes, and polished finishes that command attention.

The key to pulling it all together? Authenticity! Allow your look to reflect who you are - then add a little extra sparkle & shine and have some fun!

Party Hair: The Ultimate Accessory

This year’s holiday hair trends favor texture, volume, and artful adornment. The mood is playful, romantic, and a little rebellious.

• Voluminous tousled waves rule supreme. Think flowing, effortless curls with bounce and body. Use a large-barrel wand and a texturizing spray to create unstructured, full waves that feel as though they’ve arrived on their own.

• Statement hair clips and jewels transform even simple styles: oversized pearl barrettes, jeweled combs, or crystal hairpins are being paired with low buns, half-up twists, and side-swept looks.

• Soft braids with detail are having a big moment - delicate rope braids, undone fishtails, or accent braids woven into down styles, perhaps, sprinkled with micro rhinestones or metallic thread.

Holiday Makeup: Glow, Depth & Daring Color

Makeup this holiday season is about radiance with edge.

• Deep jewel tones dominate eye looks: emerald greens, sapphire blues, rich eggplant, and burgundy liners or shadows accentuate eyes for maximum impact. A subtle smokey liner-gradient or press-pigment lids in jewel tones are trending.

• Graphic metallic accents: a sliver of liquid gold or silver along the inner corner or lash line, or metallic smudged wings, lifts the look without overwhelming, while shimmering powders add sparkle!

• Bold lips (but choose your one). If eyes are dramatic, opt for a soft nude or muted berry. But pairing a rich oxblood, plum, or classic deep red lip with a more neutral eye is absolutely on-point.

“Beauty is never just surface-deep. It’s about radiating joy, poise, and presence, because when you feel your best, you give your best, that’s the ultimate glow.”

Dressing for Holiday Parties: The vibe is luxe, bold, textural & colorful.

• Fabrics with dimension & texture: Think plush velvet, sequins, brocade, devoré (burn-out) knits, feathers, and faux fur trims. Mixing textures is very now (i.e. feathers & velvet)

• Two-piece stories: Matching tops and skirts or pantsets in shimmering fabrics let you mix and match, wear together for full impact this holiday and separately beyond the holidays.

• Metallic or jewel-tone palettes dominate: clear pink, emerald, sapphire, amethyst, ruby, and rich metallicsgold, copper, bronze, and pewter, pick your best color and make a statement.

• Statement accessories: Oversized cuffs, sculptural earrings, crystal belts, and bold shoes (even color-blocked metallic heels) will accent and pull together your look.

Barb has honed her style and business savvy through 35 years of fashion and design expertise, including a career with Nordstrom in management, buying, merchandising, and wardrobe & image consulting. As the owner of Au Courant Salon, the founder of The DEN and POSH, and a senior designer herself, Barb offers head-to-toe style and one-on-one personal attention that is specific to you.

“True style isn’t about trends—it’s about confidence. When you align how you look with who you are, every outfit, every hairstyle, and every moment becomes an effortless expression of your authentic beauty.” - Barb Hovsepian, POSH Style and Au Courant

PET OF THE MONTH

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on an extraordinary little one named Chika. This charming pup has captured the hearts of everyone at Island Animal Hospital. Chika came to us in need of a MPL surgery.

Medial Patellar Luxation (MPL) is a common orthopedic condition in small dogs where the kneecap (patella) dislocates from its normal position.

Chika is recovering well and will be back to bouncing through the parks and chasing small sparrows very soon.

Chika loves apples and going shopping with her owner.
