In Texas, Twinkies Mean Terrific Food

Welcome fall!

With the changing seasons comes a change in what we're craving, and with fall that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable edition of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages around town. We had the pleasure of checking in with the Omni PGA Frisco Resort's team regarding their wide range of varied dining options, so get your taste buds ready, you're in for a treat.

The smells of fall bring memories to my mind of sitting in my family's kitchen, and the aroma of cinnamon, apple, pumpkin, chili and soups of any kind brings me right back to that table.

There's definitely an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting. Food brings us all together, and whether we are sharing a meal with loved ones or enjoying a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying food is invaluable.

As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you nibbling and noshing around town!

Let’s

TOAST TO Wine And Hope

In the heart of downtown Prosper, there’s a place where wine lovers and curious newcomers can gather and enjoy a great glass of wine. Prosper Wine House, started by Mike and Trina Lopez, is more than just a spot to drink wine—frequent guests indicate it’s a place that reflects their passion for wine, their love for Texas and their desire to bring people together in a friendly, welcoming setting.

The Lopez’s journey to opening Prosper Wine House began with their mutual love for wine, particularly the unique flavors and characteristics of Texas wine country. After moving to Prosper to be closer to their granddaughter, the couple says they envisioned creating a gathering place where people could enjoy boutique wines in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Prosper Wine House is not just another wine venue; it’s a celebration of small, family-owned wineries that often go unnoticed in the larger wine market. “We primarily showcase boutique, family-owned wineries that have little representation but offer great quality and value,” explains Matt Hanby, general manager of Prosper Wine House.

Matt shares that one of the remarkable aspects of Prosper Wine House is its ability to cater to both seasoned wine connoisseurs and those new to wine tasting. “We have fun with wine and

understand that people come with different levels of experience and expectations,” Matt notes, adding that the approachable menu, with its clear descriptions and varied price points, ensures that everyone can find something they enjoy.

When it comes to wine, Prosper Wine House takes pride in offering a diverse and ever-evolving selection.

“We have a wide range of styles, primarily from Texas, California, Washington and Oregon,” Matt says. “We’re constantly on the lookout for the next fun, great-value wine to add to our list.”

Matt explains this commitment to variety is reflected in the venue’s wine flights, which rotate every few months and often feature creative themes. For example, a recent flight compared wines from Texas and California, while another focused on summertime sips. He says Prosper Wine House also plans to roll out an all-blends flight, showcasing a mix of red and white blends that promise to intrigue and delight wine lovers.

For those interested in deepening their wine knowledge, Prosper Wine House professionals offer educational classes that explore different wine regions and styles. Meanwhile, a small selection of beer, seltzers and wine slushies caters to those who may not yet consider themselves wine aficionados.

The ambiance at Prosper Wine House is as thoughtfully curated as its wine selection. Housed in a large, industrial-style building with brick walls and multi-use rooms, the building at 209 W. Broadway St., features two stories of distinctive spaces designed to enhance the wine-tasting experience, from intimate lounges to lively rooftop patios. The event center, a 1,600-square-foot space that can accommodate up to 120 guests, is perfect for larger gatherings, while the upstairs indoor/outdoor area, with its folding glass wall and private patio, offers a more intimate setting. They also provide live music during select dates.

“The indoor/outdoor upstairs area is my favorite spot in the building,” Matt shares. “Especially at sunset, when the views of the nearby silos and Town Hall building are simply breathtaking.”

As Prosper Wine House continues to grow, Matt and his team are excited about the future. A new partnership with Emporium Pies is just one of the many initiatives in the works, with plans to add a pie and dessert wine flight to the menu in the coming weeks. “The possibilities for events here are endless,” states Matt.

Whether one calls Prosper home or is simply visiting, a stop at Prosper Wine House assures an enriched understanding of winemaking and the joy of savoring a quality bottle in the company of others. “We’re proud to be a part of the town of Prosper and support local business,” states Matt. “We’re always open to new partnerships and ideas, with a focus on bringing great events to the people of Prosper and surrounding areas.”

THE ORIGINAL TEXAS TWINKIES

Hutchins BBQ Proudly Serves Up Lil' Nuggets Of Jalapeño Joy

Celebrate National Texas Twinkie Day with Hutchins BBQ on Oct. 16!

“Our mouthwatering Original Texas Twinkies are complete with a large jalapeño, stuffed with brisket and cream cheese, and wrapped in premium thick-cut bacon,” says Hutchins BBQ co-owner/president Tim Hutchins. “They’re so good, we had to create a holiday to celebrate them.”

The Hutchins’ team even made a video titled: “How It’s Made: The Original Texas Twinkie!”

Hutchins BBQ introduced Texas Twinkies in 2014 and have sold thousands of them since. This unique popper is available to anyone in the entire United States, a dozen for $95, along with all of Hutchins’ smoked brisket, sausage, rubs and apparel. Shipments go out every Tuesday morning, with a two-day delivery zone from the ship date. Twinkies arrive at customers’ doors, vacuum-sealed and semi-frozen, to be reheated.

Jalapeño poppers are rumored to have been invented in Texas, many decades ago; wrapped in bacon or sausage, they went by the name “armadillo eggs.” However, many locals credit Hutchins for putting them squarely on modern-day’s popularity map.

“We call ours the ‘original’ Texas Twinkies because, to our knowledge, we were the first to insert brisket inside the poppers,” reveals Hutchins BBQ co-owner/vice president Trey Hutchins. “We now sell 8,000 to 10,000 Twinkies a week.”

Trey says they hand-pick the jalapeños from Mexican markets in the area. “Each one must be the size of a pork rib, so it takes some effort to source our peppers and only so many make the cut,” he adds.

Regarding this month’s national observation: “Don’t be shy, get yourself a bite of Texas perfection!” exclaims Tim.

FarmHaus Catering By Five Star Event Services

Delivers Fare From Scratch Ingredients

“We take great pride in developing unique menus that are sure to impress guests,” says founder/CEO owner-operator Jason Lewis.

“With a touch of stylish flair, we use the freshest, seasonal produce and high-quality ingredients to create exquisite dishes from scratch.

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY FARMHAUS CATERING

Our commitment to using only the finest ingredients ensures truly exceptional dining experiences,” adds Jason.

When Jason references fresh produce, he means just-harvested from his own personal farm, located on the outskirts of downtown McKinney and the border of New Hope. “Currently, our farm operation consists of microgreens, selling fresh farm eggs (during this February, the team announced they “couldn’t keep up with their wonderful, hard-working hens”) and eight supplemental produce planters for all our fresh herbs, variety of peppers, tomatoes and vegetables,” he explains.

Jason and FarmHaus managing partner Jairo Sandoval bought the farm during September 2022, and he says it’s been operational during the last year, supplying great food items to their catering business. “We source all of our catering Ingredients fresh daily, so being able to integrate our own farm fresh ingredients is truly a farm to table experience.”

He says clients who come to the farm for tastings love to play with their resident chickens, which they lovingly call “the Founding Feathers.”

In addition to catering services, they also offer a comprehensive range of rental options for seamless event planning.

“No matter the occasion, whether it be an elaborate wedding, a corporate event, a

backyard barbecue, or an intimate gathering, our team is ready to cater to every need. We strive for exceeding our clients’ expectations so we can create unforgettable memories for them and their guests,” promises Jason.

SER VI NG UP S OUP

Fall’s most notable comfort meal

CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP

This hearty chicken noodle soup is the perfect comfort food that is packed with nutritious goodness. This pairs perfectly with homemade beer bread or a sourdough loaf.

INGREDIENTS:

• 8 cups chicken broth (add more if desired)

• Whole fryer chicken, cut in chunks or shredded

• 5 celery stalks, sliced

• 8 carrots, sliced

• ½ onion diced

• 4 tablespoons butter

• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

• ¼ cup half and half (optional)

• 1 package egg noodles

• Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

In a large stock pot, add 8 cups of chicken broth. Dice carrots, celery and onion and add to the broth. Bring to a boil, and reduce to medium heat until the vegetables are soft. In the meantime, skin and cube 1 whole fryer chicken and add to the stock pot. Next, add egg noodles (frozen Reames homemade egg noodles are my favorite) and let boil until noodles are cooked. Add butter, half and half, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Simmer on low until ready to serve.

McKinney Free Little Pantry

PROVIDING DIGNITY AND ESSENTIAL SUPPORT FOR ALL IN NEED, 24/7

“Take what you need, leave what you can.”

In September 2016, Kim Sanchez recalls that she founded the McKinney Little Free Pantry with a simple yet powerful vision: to teach her young children the importance of having a servant’s heart. Kim says she felt compelled to share her own resources with the less fortunate. This desire to give back to the community sparked the creation of the McKinney Little Free Pantry.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the primary purpose of the McKinney Little Free Pantry is to provide non-perishable food, toiletries and necessities to those in need, with no barriers to access. The pantry operates 24/7, serving as a lifeline for anyone who requires assistance, regardless of their circumstances. The pantry’s focus is to treat people with care and respect, making sure they not only get food but also feel valued and respected.

Kim states that unlike traditional food banks the McKinney Little Free Pantry operates on an honor system. There’s no need for identification or paperwork. With 13 pantry locations across McKinney, she says each one is restocked twice daily, every day of the year. “The pantries serve a diverse group of people, including the homeless seeking a quick meal, low-income families needing to supplement their groceries, individuals experiencing temporary financial hardships, and children who may be too proud to ask for help.”

She says the pantries are managed uniformly, with larger pantries offering family-sized portions and smaller ones catering to individuals. From farm-fresh eggs to canned goods, the pantry stocks a wide range of shelf-stable items.

Community involvement is vital to the pantry’s success. Kim says volunteers help maintain the pantries, while donations from the North Texas Food Bank and residents keep the shelves stocked. “Financial donations are used to purchase additional supplies.”

Since its inception, the McKinney Little Free Pantry has become a crucial resource for the community, evolving to meet the growing demand. Kim’s favorite quote reads: “Your job is not to judge. Your job is not to figure out if someone deserves something. Your job is to lift the fallen, to restore the broken, and to heal the hurting.”

SIP, SWIRL, AND SAVOR YOUR WAY THROUGH YOUNTVILLE, THE CULINARY HEART OF NAPA

DESTINATION DELICIOUS

Looking for a once-in-a-lifetime epicurean experience? Yountville, which is nestled into Napa County with vineyards in every direction, is a treasure trove of foodie greatness at every turn. Here is how to take a bite out of it all.

RH YOUNTVILLE RESTAURANT

The flashy, splashy RH Yountville is hard to miss as it takes up nearly a full block along Yountville’s ultra-walkable downtown. The Restoration Hardwareowned property is a wine, food, and shopping mecca comprised of five separate experiences—an indoor/ outdoor restaurant with a glass roof surrounded by 100-year-old olive trees and adorned with dramatic crystal chandeliers; a two-story wine-tasting space with its own share of crystal chandeliers and a sleek limestone bar; a limited-production wine center; an espresso bar; and a boutique design gallery grander in scale than even its ever-so-lavish sister property at the Scottsdale Quarter in Scottsdale.

Award-winning chef Brendan Sodikoff leads the kitchen, sourcing seasonal ingredients from nearby farms and using them as inspiration for both whimsical, shareable, and New American fare, as well as twists on comfort-food classics. His team allows vegetables to shine right along with proteins, making it the perfect place for all diets. There are at least 40 wines by the glass on the menu at any given time, many from neighboring wineries. The expertly trained staff has pairing suggestions—be they wine, craft beer, or craft cocktails—for each dish, offering recommendations based on guests’ palates and preferences over trends and their personal tastes. RH.com/yountville/restaurant

TASTING ROOM TREATS

Yountville’s many wineries and vineyards toss out tradition—bellying up to a bar for a flight of wine with crackers to cleanse the palate or a basic meat and cheese board—in favor of interactive foodie fun when it comes to its tastings.

RH Yountville. Photo courtesy RH Yountville

Handwritten Wines , for example, offers a Breadand-Butter Experience. During the 90-minute seated event, guests can enjoy white truffle potato chips and Bouchon Bakery baguettes, along with multiple mouthwatering artisan butters. The butters are handmade to complement five of the winery’s most awarded varietals that are made on the Napa Valley hillside and most coveted vineyard blocks. HandWrittenWines.com

Priest Ranch , which is next door to Handwritten, boasts a Bacon and Wine Tasting. A must if you love meat and wine, the 90-minute experience marries four wines with its own bacon, each of which has been flavored with everything from honey to harissa to Italian herbs to bring out distinct notes in the wine. PriestRanchWines.com

Silver Trident Winery, across the two-lane street from Priest Ranch and Handwritten—so a one-minute walk— is home to what it calls the Potato Chip Extravaganza. True to its name, those who book this crunch-tastic tasting are treated to five types of potato chips, each sourced from a small producer. Each chip comes with a glass of wine to accompany it. The combination will take your taste buds on a magical mystery tour of flavor. SilverTridentWinery.com

JCB Tasting Salon , approximately 300 feet from Silver Trident, is home to a Caviar and Sparkling Wine Pairing. This dive into the ultimate in decadence pairs four high-end sparkling wines with four distinct artisanal caviars. Prepare for bubbly effervescence and over-the-top indulgence. JCBcollection.com

Chandon is nearly a mile from the others, but well worth the three-minute drive. During its ambitious Epicurean Experience, chef Juan Cabrera highlights the beauty of bubbles by pairing his favorites with five precisely plated works of culinary art. Chandon.com

Baldacci Family Vineyards sits at the intersection of Yountville and Stag’s Leap, and its Perfect Pairings program is just that. The nibble-heavy experience explores the science of how wine and food amplify each other, and even offers suggestions of what to pair with your personal favorite bites and sips. BaldacciVineyards.com

ROMANTIC RESORT RESTAURANTS

As one might imagine, all the accommodations in the region drip luxury, but Hotel Yountville, Bardessono Hotel and Spa, and North Block Hotel stand out, thanks in great part to their dining options.

Hotel Yountville , just steps from more than a dozen tasting rooms and boutiques and built using river rocks from the nearby Napa River, has elegance to spare—and that extends to Heritage Oak, its signature eatery. Guests in the know always arrive prior to their reservations for killer craft cocktails (and adult popsicles!) at the Y Bar before being seated for elevated comfort food infused with wine country sophistication. HotelYountville.com

Bardessono Hotel and Spa is approximately two blocks from Hotel Yountville. The striking, sprawling LEED Platinum Certified property, situated within its own vineyard, is committed to providing a lavish experience for guests and diners within a sustainable environment. Its world-renowned Lucy Restaurant & Bar—named for the Bardessono family’s matriarch—serves up craveable farm-to-fork dishes with global flair, using ingredients from the hotel’s orchards, on-site certified organic farming garden, and similarly minded farms and purveyors across the region. Bonus: The dog-friendly restaurant also has a menu for pups. Bardessono.com

North Block Hotel, which is nearly next door to RH Yountville, features all things wood-fired and wonderful at its primarily al fresco Restaurant at North Block. Beyond the gorgeous grilled main dishes, North Block is a happy hour hot spot thanks to its daily Oyster Hour, where fresh oysters are just $1, as well as a local craft beer selection and seasonally changing menu of scrumptious sourdough pizzas. NorthBlockHotel.com

CELEB CHEF SUPPER CLUB

No gourmet guide to Yountville would be complete without some stargazing. Many of the world’s most celebrated celebrity chefs sharpen their knives and showcase their skills in Yountville.

French Laundry helped put the region on the map. The prix fixe spot—named by Anthony Bourdain as the best restaurant in the world—is one of the only restaurants to hold three Michelin stars. Every dish tells a story, and every visit is unique. Founder Thomas Keller is a veteran of several Food Network shows, a staple of talk shows, and a guest judge on Top Chef. FrenchLaundry.com

Mustards Grill , a casual, yet elegant spot, is known for American fare and is named to honor Napa’s yellow mustard flowers that provide vital nutrients to the vines. The restaurant is covered in them, save for the space carved out for its organic garden. Its founder is bestselling cookbook author and Top Chef: Masters contender Cynthia Pawlcyn. MustardsGrill.com

Bottega Napa Valley excels at bold Italian flavors in a dizzyingly delicious setting complete with dreamy stone fireplaces and glass chandeliers. Emmy® award-winning chef Michael Chiarello helms Bottega, always seeking to authentically connect guests with the flavors from his family’s roots in Southern Italy. BottegaNapaValley.com

Bistro Jeanty brings the French countryside to Yountville. The brainchild of Michelin star and James Beard Award-winner Philippe Jeanty, the bistro has been a Napa staple since 1998. Today, Philippe’s daughter Camille continues his legacy, creating each menu as an homage to her father’s favorite childhood food memories from his native France, and diners taste the love in every bite. It’s Pumpkin Bread Season

The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort

Ingredients:

• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

• 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon nutmeg

• 1/2 teaspoon ginger

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin

• 1 1/2 cups sugar

• 2 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil

• 1/2 cup melted butter

• 2 eggs

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside.

3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup.

4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined.

5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy.

6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended.

7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal.

8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.
