THE LONG BEACH DENTIST

Our practice philosophy has been heavily influenced by Dr. Grella’s grandfather, who was a dentist for 40 years and always followed the Golden Rule: He never recommended dental treatments to patients that he would not believe in recommending for himself, and Dr. Grella upholds this same standard at his practice.

Dr. Grella has been practicing dentistry for over 15 years and he has extensive training from the Navy where he did his residency and active military duty.

Our office also has over 700 Google reviews... our patients LOVE our office and you will never find a dentist who is more passionate about Dentistry than Dr. Grella.

We promise if you come to our office you will love your experience and feel right at home.

Gratitude is Our Lifestyle

As the days get shorter and we naturally turn our thoughts to thanksgiving, I find myself overwhelmed by an abundance of reasons to be grateful — especially for this incredible community that has so warmly embraced this Jersey girl for the past seven years I’ve lived in Long Beach. Usually, I write this letter to introduce the theme and stories readers can expect to explore as they flip through the pages of each issue. This time around, I’d like to use this space to thank the people that help me bring Long Beach City Lifestyle to life month after month.

First and foremost, thanks to my Creator for lighting my path and blessing me with this amazing opportunity. Thank you to my husband Rene and my son Elijah, who sacrifice time with me so that I can do this work. Thank you to my editor, Kat Schuster, for all the late nights and early mornings you’ve spent helping me pull each issue together. Thank you to my lead photographer, Nirav Solanki, for finding the time to share his amazing gift with all of us despite his busy globetrotting schedule. Thank you to each of our advertising partners who make it possible for us to bring this publication to the community.

Last but certainly not least, I want to thank you, the reader, for allowing us into your home every month. When we launched our first issue in February, I could never have imagined the overwhelmingly positive response we would receive. Thank you for your continued support, your invaluable feedback and for being the heart and soul of Long Beach. We couldn’t do it without you.

With endless gratitude,

FIERCE BY DESIGN

HOW SELF-TAUGHT DESIGNER ALANNA SINGLETON BUILT A FIERCE MARKETING COMPANY

ARTICLE BY KAT SCHUSTER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIRAV SOLANKI

When Alanna Singleton launched A. Fierce Marketing Co. in 2020, it wasn’t with a formal degree in design or years of agency experience under her belt. Instead, it was grit, an instinct for aesthetics and a love for Long Beach that carried her into the digital marketing world.

Her journey began with a leadership role in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., where she was tasked with creating flyers and managing social media for her Long Beach alumnae chapter nearly a decade ago.

“I’d never done anything like that before,” she recalls.

“But I taught myself. Flyers came first, and then people started asking me to design theirs, and this time for pay.”

Soon after, someone asked if she could build a website.

“I had never done a website before, but I figured since I was designing flyers, websites would be the next step.”

One request led to another, and soon Singleton was building websites, teaching herself through trial and error.

By 2020, Singleton decided to turn her side work into a real business.

“I wanted to create my business to help coaches and service providers be proud of their websites and have a powerful digital presence.”

DESIGN MEETS DATA

For Singleton, artistry is nothing without strategy.

“Numbers always tell the truth.”

That’s why it’s important for Singleton to stay up to date on marketing stats, design statistics and trends. She follows

How Alanna stays ahead — always learning, always growing.
Designer by trade and by style, Alanna’s quiet confidence is her best accessory.

HubSpot reports closely, dabbles in Pinterest for inspiration and pays attention to what her peers are doing.

“I know that most users are on their phones so it’s important for me to make sure that a client’s website also looks great on mobile view.”

That balance of creativity and analytics is built into what she calls her Fierce Presence Framework, a three-part system that emphasizes magnetic messaging, a bold brand and strategic conversion. Each pillar builds on the next to ensure clients walk away with not just a beautiful site, but a complete, cohesive digital presence.

One client that stands out in her memory was a coaching company for women in leadership. Their old website, with its dark, masculine color scheme, looked more like it belonged to a security or HVAC company. Singleton redesigned their digital presence to reflect their brand’s personality and audience.

“The difference was night and day,” she says.

That same eye for detail and composition now shapes her digital work.

“I’ve never taken a marketing class or anything like that, but I’ve always been creative,” she said. “I’ve always loved designing and just creating beautiful things.”

LOOKING AHEAD

Living in Long Beach for more than 20 years, Singleton has built her life in a city she loves. She envisions A. Fierce Marketing Co. growing into a full-fledged agency, with a team of designers offering everything from social media strategy to branded event materials. Beyond business, she hopes to partner with nonprofits to provide free websites for entrepreneurs who can’t afford them and even establish a scholarship fund for students pursuing creative fields.

“I believe you don’t have to choose between function and beauty. You can have both — and that’s what I deliver.”
— Alanna Singleton

Singleton’s roots in creativity go back further than her sorority days. As a middle schooler in Sacramento, she loved to draw, often replicating VHS cover art by hand.

“I don’t know how I picked it up, or where I picked it up from. I just started drawing. I always had this notepad I carried around,” she recalled. “I wish I still had that.”

Singleton doesn’t just build websites — she architects digital narratives. In her dual role as both designer and certified StoryBrand guide, Singleton leverages Donald Miller’s messaging framework to position customers as the heroes of their own stories. It’s this blend of storytelling and strategy that allows her to deliver not just beautiful websites, but ones that truly connect.

“I believe you don’t have to choose between function and beauty,” Singleton says. “You can have both — and that’s what I deliver.”

Grateful Voices

This time of year naturally invites us to turn inward toward reflection and pause in appreciation for all that surrounds us. Gratitude isn’t just found in life’s brightest moments — it lives in the quiet spaces between joy and sorrow, in times of growth and change, and even when we’re saying goodbye to someone or something we love. This November, members of our community remind us that thankfulness can flourish anywhere: around dinner tables, in classroom connections, in the daily work of nonprofits, and yes, even as cherished chapters close.

Here are the voices of our neighbors, sharing what fills their hearts with gratitude this season.

“This year, I am incredibly grateful for the love and support of my family and friends. This has been a huge year of both growth and change for me and I am grateful for all the love, guidance, and assurance I have received. I am so thankful for the ability to live this beautiful life in Long Beach with my two girls!”

“It is with heartfelt gratitude that we thank our community for supporting the YMCA of Greater Long Beach. Every gift of time, talent, and treasure helps us create opportunities where youth can discover their potential, families can feel supported, and communities can flourish. Your support strengthens our cause-driven work and reminds us that together, we can build a brighter, healthier, and more connected Long Beach for all.”

with YOU

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

A MID-CENTURY TIME CAPSULE IN EAST LONG BEACH

ARTICLE BY KAT SCHUSTER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIRAV SOLANKI

It’s that time of year again.

that embodies this iconic era of design.

Imagine gathering with your loved ones around a table set aglow with autumn candlelight, the aroma of a holiday feast drifting from the kitchen and laughter echoing beneath retro-futuristic lighting straight out of a design magazine. A home like this East Long Beach mid-century gem feels like it was made for moments like these.

Built in 1950, this 1,290-square-foot abode has been lovingly restored with an eye for authenticity. The three-bedroom, two-bath home is a retro lover’s paradise.

Original oak floors flow seamlessly throughout the home, where details like the angled-edge built-in shelving add texture and character. In the kitchen, custom walnut cabinetry strikingly contrasts with terrazzo flooring. Expansive aluminum-framed sliders invite the outdoors in, opening the living room onto a deck that invites gatherings, both intimate and grand.

A striking fireplace, framed in stack bond Roman brick and accented with walnut shelving, anchors the living room in warmth. Vertical slat walnut panels and flagstone accents Picture spending your holiday season in a home

lend rhythm and timelessness, while custom metalwork nods to the iconic breeze-block style. Each element feels purposeful, a tribute to mid-century artistry balanced by modern comfort.

While aesthetics take center stage, practicality hasn’t been overlooked. A detached two-car garage, updated plumbing, newer roof and a tankless water heater ensure peace of mind, proof that beauty and function can coexist with ease.

Set in the desirable City College neighborhood, the property offers more than a home; it offers a snapshot of one of the most iconic design eras. Picture the glow of period-accurate pendant lights overhead as friends linger long after dinner.

This home feels like an invitation to gather, to celebrate and to create lasting memories in a space that emulates mid-century elegance right here in Long Beach.

A CAPE COD THANKSGIVING

Cornish Hen with Cranberry-Thyme Sauce
ARTICLE BY MELISSA RAMSAY

For me, Thanksgiving has always been more than just turkey and stuffing — it’s about honoring heritage and place. My mother’s family has deep roots in Cape Cod, where cranberry bogs have been a part of our family for generations. Those ruby-red berries have been a staple on our holiday table for as long as I can remember, and quite honestly, I like to say the cranberry juice runs through my veins. They remind me of my Cape Verdean roots, where family gatherings overflow with flavor, warmth and love. This recipe is my nod to both: a Cape Cod–style Thanksgiving that celebrates the abundance of cranberries and the intimacy of a small, elegant table.

Cape Cod–style Thanksgiving

INGREDIENTS (SERVES 4)

FOR THE CORNISH HENS:

• 4 Cornish hens (about 1.5 lb each)

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

• 6 garlic cloves, minced

• 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves (plus extra sprigs for garnish)

• Zest of 1 lemon

• Kosher salt and cracked black pepper

• 1 cup chicken stock (for roasting pan)

FOR THE CRANBERRY-THYME SAUCE:

• 2 cups fresh cranberries

• ½ cup dry white wine

• ½ cup orange juice (fresh-squeezed)

• ½ cup sugar (adjust to taste)

• 1 tsp Dijon mustard

• 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves

• Pinch of cinnamon

• Pinch of sea salt

DIRECTIONS

1. Prepare the hens:

• Preheat oven to 425°F.

• In a small bowl, mix softened butter with minced garlic, thyme, and lemon zest.

• Pat hens dry with paper towels. Gently loosen the skin over the breast and thighs and rub the butter mixture underneath the skin for maximum flavor.

• Brush hens with olive oil, season generously with salt and pepper, and truss legs with kitchen twine.

• Place hens on a roasting rack over a sheet pan or shallow roasting pan. Pour chicken stock into the pan to keep the hens moist.

2. Roast the hens:

• Roast at 425°F for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 375°F and continue roasting for 35–40 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh.

• Tent with foil and rest for 10 minutes before serving.

3. Make the cranberry-thyme sauce:

• While the hens roast, combine cranberries, wine, orange juice, sugar, mustard, thyme, cinnamon, and salt in a saucepan.

• Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens (about 10–12 minutes).

• Adjust sweetness with a touch more sugar if needed. Strain for a smooth sauce or leave rustic and chunky

4. Serve:

• Halve hens or serve whole, drizzling with warm cranberry-thyme sauce. Garnish with fresh thyme sprigs and serve alongside classic Thanksgiving sides or roasted root vegetables.

CHEF’S TIP

Pair this dish with buttery mashed potatoes or a wild rice pilaf. A crisp white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or a light Pinot Noir will complement the cranberry-thyme sauce beautifully.
