Talk To Your Family About Wealth Transfer

If you’re anticipating an inheritance, you may want to talk about it with your parents or other family members — because early, open communication will benefit everyone involved.

Many people are reluctant to have these conversations. Consider this: More than a third of Americans do not plan on discussing a transfer of wealth with their families, according to a study from Edward Jones in partnership with NEXT 360 Partners and Morning Consult.

But having these conversations is important for several reasons.

By discussing your parents’ plans and wishes, you and other family members can avoid unpleasant surprises when it’s time for the estate to be settled. And you may be able to contribute ideas about proper wealth transfer strategies or suggest that your parents work with an estate-planning attorney and a tax professional.

Finally, by having these discussions while your parents are healthy and alert, you can help avoid a situation in which they become incapacitated and have trouble making financial decisions. You may suggest that a power of attorney can be helpful.

Starting these conversations can be challenging, and you have to be sensitive to your parents’ needs and wishes — but it’s worth the effort.

Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors cannot provide tax or legal advice. You should consult your attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation.

Letter from the Publisher

Having the mindset that there is no time to relax and enjoy life due to an overwhelming workload can create a cycle of stress and guilt.  Recognizing the importance of balance is crucial; allowing oneself to unwind is not a waste of time but a necessary investment in mental health.  Embracing moments of leisure can lead to a more fulfilling  approach to both work and life, and yet I continue to struggle with this on a daily basis. I feel guilty when I am not productive but am slowly learning from my children that life is so short to put off enjoying all of the glorious things life has to offer.

We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and create a sense of achievement.  I have recently stepped out of my comfort zone to try my hand at Pickleball and much to my surprise, I love it.  Now I have a new activity to share with my husband, and it keeps me physically fit!

Also, I’ve noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be planting flowers, biking a new trail or going out to find a fun art exhibit or festival in a different part of town.

Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar.

ALL IN PHYSICAL THERAPY PROVIDES ONE-ON-ONE TREATMENT.

Personalized treatment for every Body

Tommy Frevert opened his physical therapy office in Blue Springs in October of 2020, and his office in Lee’s Summit in August of 2022. His title DPT stands for Doctor of Physical Therapy, and the Cert MDT refers to his certification in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment through the McKenzie Institute.

“We provide physical therapy for individuals recovering from orthopedic surgeries such as total joint replacements, tendon/ligament repairs, back surgeries, sports injuries and workplace injuries,” he explained. “We also help individuals who are suffering from pain get back to their daily activities and goals they would like to reach.”

He emphasized that the biggest thing that sets his staff apart is their one-on-one approach with patients. Each patient is seen individually and doesn't share time with a therapist between other patients. This allows them to give their patients the most attention possible.

“We are able to establish a connection with our patients due to this approach that makes each patient feel more like family, than ‘just another patient.’ At All In Physical Therapy, we really care!” he noted.

Frevert believes physical therapy is important as he and his staff are movement specialists, noting, “We know how the body should move and function. We can establish a plan of care to get patients back to the lives they want to live. It is not normal for people to live with and put up with pain. We are experts in getting people back to what they love to do! With our one-on-one approach, it allows us to treat patients like they should be treated, part of a family that cares about their well-being.”

He decided to open his own business to get out on his own and be able to serve the community he lives in the way he personally envisioned. He started the Blue Springs office first as that is where he lives with his family and wants to be very involved where he lives.

He opened the Lee's Summit office second as that is where he grew up and wanted to bring a high-quality product and give back to the community that has given him and his family so much. He is planning to open a clinic in Belton this year and looks forward to serving another section of the KC Metro area.

He explained, “I have had my fair share of bumps and bruises along a very athletic pathway. I had three knee surgeries throughout my athletic career and the help and motivation I received while recovering was amazing. This was definitely one of the reasons that inspired me to be a physical therapist.”

Following his graduation from Lee’s Summit North High School, he went to college at Northwest Missouri State University where he majored in Biological Psychology, then earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Rockhurst University.

“My wife and I started our careers, she as an Occupational Therapist, traveling around the country in different states until settling down in Blue Springs. Since doing that, I have worked in Blue Springs since 2017,” he continued. “Our kids have grown up here and love the schools and the community. My inspiration to open came from an internal push to serve the community. I have learned a lot over the last three and a half years and made a lot of connections in the communities we serve! I am very happy that my business serves the community that my kids are growing up in and the community I grew up in.”

DINNER AND DRINKS WITH A VIEW

Marina

Summer in Kansas City has a new hotspot: Marina 27 Steak and Seafood at Lake Lotawana. With the slogan "The only thing we overlook is the water," this lakeside gem promises an unforgettable experience.

27 Steak & Seafood renovates stunning space
“Right in the middle of Covid, we renovated, rebranded, remodeled and gave the grand old lady a much-needed facelift.”

In 2020, co-owners Lance McFarland and Roger Accurso breathed new life into the beloved Marina Grog and Galley. "Right in the middle of Covid, we renovated, rebranded, remodeled and gave the grand old lady a much-needed facelift. We opened as Marina 27 and have been going ever since," McFarland reminisces. His journey with the restaurant began in 2005 when he joined as a chef, fostering a seamless blend of continuity and innovation that has driven Marina 27’s success.

One of the standout transformations is the expanded and updated deck. This premier outdoor patio, capable of seating about 200 people, is the heart of Marina 27 during the summer months. McFarland is proud of this beautiful space. "We feel like it is the best patio in the city, and the only place that is open to the public that is on the water here in KC. When you are out there with the live music, cocktails or a bottle of wine, excellent food from Chef Robert Davis—there is nothing better!"

Live music is a staple, gracing the deck every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and some Sundays. “It adds to the ambiance of what the Marina is and makes it an experience,” McFarland explains. “We try to have it so it is not a concert-type environment, but it’s more like background, dinner music.” Looking ahead, a stage on the deck is in the works to further enhance the live music experience.

This summer, Marina 27 introduced a Saturday brunch, complementing their year-round Sunday brunch. The new menu, featuring items like seafood-infused eggs benedict, chicken & waffles, and the classic KC strip and eggs, has been a hit. “When you get the mimosas and brunch going out on the patio, next to the lake, it is truly the vibe we are wanting to cultivate,” McFarland says. Adding to the weekend charm, sailboat races take place on Lake Lotawana every Saturday and Sunday morning.

Marina 27's summer cocktail menu, launched in May, has been a resounding success. Favorites like the Passion Fruit Mojito and Heat Wave Margarita have become crowd-pleasers. “We are trying to raise the bar on our cocktails,” McFarland says, acknowledging the expertise of bar manager Andi Ruiz, a talented mixologist. For those who prefer non-alcoholic options, the mocktails, including a popular Passion Fruit Limeade, are equally delightful.

Visitors can savor these drinks at the outdoor bar on the patio, enjoying lake views and live music, or at the Wooden Boat Bar, a great spot to catch a Royals game.

During the lake season, many locals arrive by boat, taking advantage of the on-site restaurant. While this customer base is cherished, McFarland hopes more people from Lee’s Summit and Kansas City will discover the short drive to Lake Lotawana. “When you come to Marina 27, our atmosphere feels like a vacation,” he says, capturing the essence of the lake life experience.

Marina 27 offers “fine dining with a casual twist,” making it a perfect destination for both special occasions and relaxed outings. McFarland emphasizes the importance of making reservations. “It helps us to secure you a table on the patio if that is where you want to be. Reservations also help us prepare, in all ways, so we can exceed the customers’ expectations.”

Embrace the summer, savor the view, and indulge in the unique dining experience that is Marina 27 Steak & Seafood.

A Summer Staycation Gem Unity Village:

Nestled just 15 miles southeast of downtown Kansas City, Unity Village offers a tranquil and enriching escape perfect for both locals and visitors. This historic destination, founded in 1919 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, has grown from a small retreat for Unity workers into a vibrant community hub with amenities and scenic beauty.

Unity Village's origins date back to 1889 when the Fillmores founded the Unity movement. Inspired by Myrtle Fillmore's miraculous self-healing through prayer and affirmations, the couple's teachings quickly spread, leading to the establishment of Unity Farm on 58 acres of land. By 1953, this area was incorporated as Unity Village, now the heart of Unity World Headquarters. The Fillmores' pioneering spiritual teachings on prosperity, healing, and the power of thought continue to resonate globally, with over 600 study groups and churches worldwide.

Unity Village is a treasure trove of amenities, making it an ideal destination for various events and staycations. The campus boasts over 20,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a grand fountain installation, and the largest paver labyrinth in America. Visitors can explore the 2.4-mile scenic nature trail, enjoy a round of golf, or unwind in the state-of-theart fitness center. The award-winning hotel, alongside three historic Airbnb homes, provides comfortable lodging options, while the gift shop offers a range of souvenirs and inspirational products.

The nature trail, dedicated to Carl L. Chinnery features mile markers, benches, and workout stations, providing a perfect blend of exercise and relaxation. The labyrinth and courtyard are popular walking spots, inviting guests to meditate and reflect amidst beautiful surroundings. The fitness center is available to employees, tenants, and guests, ensuring everyone can maintain their wellness routine.

Unity Village prides itself on its strong community ties, particularly with the Lee’s Summit Rotary Club and the Lee’s Summit Chamber. Through partnerships like the annual Community Service luncheon, Unity Village honors and supports local service organizations, fostering a spirit of community and giving back.

The grounds are a haven of tranquility, with numerous spaces for prayer, meditation, and quiet reflection. The rose garden, fountains, sculpture garden, and chapels provide serene settings to unwind and connect with nature. Visitors often find peace and inspiration in these well-maintained and beautiful surroundings.

Feedback from visitors to Unity Village is overwhelmingly positive. Many first-time guests are captivated by the campus's beauty and the professional service provided. The excellent value of the hotel and golf course also receives high praise. One visitor described Unity Village as "a shimmering jewel tucked away in the woods," highlighting the stunning rose garden and fountains. Another guest lauded the hotel's top-tier standards and affordable rates, while others commended the scenic wedding venues and well-stocked Airbnb homes.

“We like to say ‘It’s all right here’ at Unity Village.”

Unity Village is excited about the upcoming launch of the R.D. Goppert Event Center in Fall 2024. This major renovation of the Activities Center will offer a flexible space for events accommodating 500 to 1,000 people, perfect for fundraisers, trade shows, concerts, and more.

Unity Village welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds. While some amenities are open to the public, most require reservations. Visitors should check social media for updates on any closures, especially in the central courtyard during special events. The campus is generally closed after dusk to ensure the tranquility and safety of all guests.

Unity Village hopes every visitor leaves with a sense of peace and appreciation for the campus's beauty. With exceptional hospitality and a range of amenities, Unity Village is more than just a destination—it's a community that embraces and uplifts everyone who steps onto its grounds. As Jim Blake, CEO of Unity World Headquarters, beautifully puts it, "We like to say ‘It’s all right here’ at Unity Village."

EQUIPPED OUTDOORS ADVENTURE TRAVEL

To explore is to travel for adventure or discovery, and and If your ideal trip is exploring the outdoors while and spending time with family without the distractions of the modern world, then experiencing the trips organized by Drew Davis, Founder of Equipped Outdoors, should be next on your list.

We took the time to ask Drew about his full-service outdoor backpacking guide service that empowers people to reconnect with nature, bond with family, and build memories you will talk about for years to come.

CL: WHAT INSPIRED YOU/YOUR TEAM TO START EQUIPPED OUTDOORS?

EO: I grew up playing in the outdoors and spending time with my father. I went through scouts and really enjoyed the opportunity that the outdoors allowed me to connect with my dad. As I grew up, I learned that this was not a normal experience for other men, and I was surprised when I would talk to someone who didn't know how to use a Ferro rod, read a topo map, filter water, start a fire, select a campsite, etc.

God created us to cultivate and enjoy His creation. Too many people are afraid to go and spend time in the backcountry because they lack the know-how, opportunity, and tools to get out there. 3 years ago, my wife and I were talking about how cool it would be if we had a business where people could sleep in a lodge, learn some skills, go on a backpacking trip, and return at the end for a debrief and send off.

Technology has taken over our lives. If we do not disconnect from technology and take time to connect with people, God, and nature, we'll never be able to experience life to its utmost potential. Our outdoor adventure trips are excellent for leadership teams, families, couples, fathers, and their children to foster growth, connections, skills, and confidence.

CL: WHO IS THE IDEAL AUDIENCE TO SIGN UP FOR AN EQUIPPED

OUTDOORS ADVENTURE?

EO:  Our target audience is men and fathers with their kids and families. Our goal is to provide men and families* the opportunity to see the outdoors differently to equip them with the tools, training, and experiences to go into the outdoors on their own. We are an all-inclusive service that provides all the gear, food, and guides needed from the trailhead into the backcountry and back.

*(the first 2 kids are free for father/kid trips, ensuring families can get outside!)

CL: HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE LOCATIONS FOR YOUR TRIPS?

EO: The majority of the locations come from requests or are places I have experienced. If you are a newbie, we'll start you out on the Buffalo River Trail or Old River Trail. These 3-day/2night adventures are perfect for fathers and their kids or novices for quick weekend getaways. If you have been in the backcountry before or experienced elevation >10,000, we offer 4-5 day trips in Colorado in some of the most beautiful backcountry there is.

If you are looking for a true adventure and have a love for fishing, we offer a 5-6 day trip in the Bridger Tetons, fishing in 13+ lakes, and eating trout every night if participants want to. Lastly, we also do more challenging trips, like a 3-4 day Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim in the Grand Canyon in December or January.

CL: WHAT DOES ONE NEED TO PACK FOR AN UPCOMING TRIP?

EO: Equipped Outdoors is an all-inclusive outfitter. We provide top-of-the-line gear (tent, backpack, temp-rated sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stove, water filter, etc.), breakfast, lunch, and dinner, experienced guides, and a lot of fun. All you need to bring is waterproof hiking boots, camp shoes/water crossing shoes, hiking clothes, hat, rain jacket, insulated jacket, headlamp, a water bottle, and a spork and snacks.

Developing Healthy Eating Habits in Preschoolers

Establishing healthy eating habits in preschoolers is crucial for their growth, development, and long-term well-being. At this age, children are highly impressionable, and the dietary habits they form can influence their health for years to come. Here are some practical nutrition tips for parents and caregivers to help preschoolers develop a balanced and healthy diet.

Understanding the Nutritional Needs of Preschoolers

Preschoolers have specific nutritional needs to support their rapid growth and development. A balanced diet should include a variety of nutrients:

• Vitamins and Minerals: Essential for immune function, bone health, and overall development. Essential vitamins include A, C, D, and E, while essential minerals include calcium, iron, and potassium.

• Proteins: Crucial for muscle growth and repair. Include lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts.

• Fats: Necessary for brain development and energy. Focus on healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, and olive oil.

• Carbohydrates: Provide energy for daily activities. Opt for whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

• Hydration: Ensure preschoolers drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Encouraging Healthy Eating Habits

Encouraging healthy eating habits can be a fun and rewarding experience for both parents and children:

• Role Modeling: Children mimic their parents’ behavior. Eat healthy meals

together to set a positive example.

• Making Mealtime Enjoyable: Create a pleasant and stress-free environment during meals. Avoid distractions like television and focus on family conversations.

• Involving Children: Let preschoolers help with meal planning and preparation. This involvement increases their interest in food and willingness to try new things.

Establishing Routine and Consistency

Consistency is the key to developing healthy eating habits:

• Regular Meal and Snack Times: Establish a daily routine with three main meals and two healthy snacks.

• Avoiding Grazing: Encourage structured eating times rather than constant snacking. This helps regulate hunger and fullness cues.

• Consistent Food Choices: Offer various healthy options but maintain consistency in the types of foods available.

Handling Picky Eaters

Dealing with picky eaters can be challenging, but persistence pays off:

• Strategies: Offer new foods alongside familiar favorites. Keep portions small and gradually increase as the child becomes more comfortable.

• Introducing New Foods: Be patient and persistent. It can take multiple exposures before a child accepts a new food.

• Avoiding Power Struggles: Don’t force children to eat. Instead, encourage tasting and praise their efforts to try new foods.

Provider Spotlight: Dr. Joseph Lammert

As a parent himself, Dr. Lammert can relate to the challenges, joys, and questions of having a new child at home. He enjoys walking alongside his patients and families through their experiences.

Dr. Joseph Lammert is now seeing patients. Learn more and make an appointment online.

Professional Guidance and Resources

Seeking professional guidance ensures that nutritional needs are met:

• Consultation: Regularly consult pediatricians and nutritionists for personalized advice and dietary plans.

• Community Resources: Utilize local community resources, such as nutrition workshops and parenting classes.

• Health Check-Ups: Schedule regular health check-ups to monitor growth and nutritional status.
