Letter from the Editor

December is our Holiday and Giving issue, and as I prepare for this season with the ones I love, I am filled with gratitude for the friends, family, and loved ones who enrich my life. My favorite part of the holidays is simply being with my family. All of my kids are home from college and under one roof, and my siblings and their families return to Kansas City from all over the country. I enjoy everything from the holiday lights to the citywide festivities, and I especially enjoy giving gifts. I have always cherished the process of selecting something special just for someone I love. It brings me so much joy to find something unique, something meaningful, or even something that has been sitting at the top of a wishlist. Giving is so much more fun than receiving, and I think that is one of the magical parts of this season. It is a time to be selfless, to think about others, and to experience the joy of giving to someone we care about or even to a perfect stranger.

My kids have always found so much satisfaction in choosing a family from an angel tree and buying gifts for those who are struggling. Giving to others who are lacking offers a rare sense of fulfillment that comes from being sacrificial and embracing the true spirit of community. It is about taking care of one another and looking out for those who have less.

One of my favorite things our company does at City Lifestyle is our annual Giving Campaign. Four years ago, our owners committed to finding families in need across the country who fall between the cracks of getting help and sending them checks in the mail with a simple Christmas card that says someone cares. Every December, we send hundreds of checks to people who could use a boost giving away hundreds of thousands of dollars. The best part is that we ask you, our readers, to nominate individuals who are facing hardship or crisis. This allows the person nominating someone to participate in the act of giving. What I continue to see is that the nominator often gets even more joy from the experience than the recipient. I talk to so many of the people who submit nominations, and they often tell me it inspires them to look for more ways to give.

Another tradition I love is one started by our CEO, who gives every employee in our company a $100 bill to give away to someone who needs it. The stories that come back from our publishers and our Kansas City staff are incredibly special, and what stands out most is how deeply the act of giving fills people up.

So while I treasure all the wonderful parts of the holiday season, I am reminded each year of what this time is truly about. Giving, of course, is not limited to monetary gifts. It can also mean giving our time to those in our community who may be suffering, lonely, or simply in need of a little extra love. We all need each other, so let’s take care of one another.

I hope you find love, joy, and comfort this holiday season.

Kansas City design icon opens charming Midtown shop celebrating timeless beauty, friendship, and festive warmth.

If you’ve lived around Kansas City long enough, chances are Nell Hill’s has played a part in your story. The scent of candles, the clinking of vintage glassware, the bustle of women carrying shopping bags brimming with possibility. And at the center of it all was Mary Carol Garrity, the woman who made classic, comfortable style feel both accessible and aspirational.

“I was just doing my own little thing in Atchison, Kansas,” she recalls with a laugh. “A few girlfriends convinced me to do the Junior League Holiday Mart. That was the turning point. We had great prices, lots of stuff, and a whole lot of fun. That show really launched my business.”

From that moment, Nell Hill’s became a phenomenon. Women would pile into cars, grab their coffee, and make the drive to Atchison to spend the day. “They’d come up, shop all morning, have lunch, and head back in time for school pickup,” Mary Carol says. “Our store would be empty by three o’clock.”

Over time, Nell Hill’s expanded into multiple buildings, each with its own character. There was Garrity’s for furniture, G. Dieibolt’s for bedding and fabrics, and the original Nell Hill’s for seasonal treasures. Eventually, Mary Carol and her husband decided to bring it all closer to Kansas City, opening the Briarcliff location that would become a landmark for local design lovers.

“I’ve always been kind of a one-store operator,” she admits. “By the time we opened Briarcliff, it was a lot. I worked seven days a week for years. So when the opportunity came to sell it to a fabulous young woman who’s done an amazing job with it, I knew it was time.”

After decades in retail, Mary Carol finally exhaled. She enjoyed her well-earned rest, at least for a while. But as any creative knows, the itch never really goes away. The spark for her latest venture, Diebolt’s, came from a familiar source: friendship.

Diebolt’s is quaint and small, just 300 square feet plus a porch, but that’s part of its charm. It’s only open on Fridays and Saturdays, which keeps the pace relaxed and joyful. “It’s an old retail lady dipping her toe back in the water,” Mary Carol jokes. “Half the people who come in are returning customers, and the other half are new. It’s like a little party every weekend.”

The partnership works beautifully, and Mary Carol credits Rebecca as “the boss.” “She’s the brains behind the operation,” she says. “Rebecca handles the ordering and bookkeeping. I just come in and play store.”

The two share an eye for design and a background steeped in retail. Rebecca grew up helping in her mother’s stationery shop in Jefferson City and going to market with her mother, while Mary Carol’s own parents ran a clothing store. They met years ago at a Junior League show when Rebecca had a stationery booth. “I was drawn to her taste right away,” Mary Carol recalls. “She’s younger, full of energy, and has such great instincts. We just clicked.”

Their shared style is distinctly traditional but never stuffy. “We love mixing vintage and antique pieces without it feeling ‘grandma’,” Mary Carol explains. “We both live in smaller homes, so everything has to be beautiful and functional. We’re sentimental, too. Worn rugs, tablecloths, little pieces that mean something.”

At Diebolt’s, half of the store’s inventory is vintage, the rest new. They focus on entertaining, so think silver, glassware, table linens, and things that make gathering around a table feel special. “Diebolt’s is really more of a nod to the old Atchison store,” she says. “It’s smaller, more intimate, and completely different from Briarcliff. And it fits perfectly with what’s happening in Kansas City right now, with so many small, specialty shops popping up all over the city. It adds a lot of charm to the town.”

Mary Carol’s personal home mirrors her shop’s philosophy: layered, welcoming, and effortlessly elegant. “When someone walks in, I just want them to feel welcomed,” she says. “That’s the goal. Nothing too perfect. Just warm and comfortable.”

She and her husband now live in a small cottage after downsizing, and the smaller space suits her style perfectly. “I love it all, but if I had to pick a favorite room, it’s my kitchen, and I don’t even cook!” she laughs. Her home is filled with pieces from Nell Hill’s days: furniture, textiles, dishes, and a mix of cherished finds from over the years. “You just edit and choose what works,” she says. “Everything has to earn its place.”

For the holidays, Mary Carol takes a simplified approach. “I usually decorate after Thanksgiving. I hate decorating the tree,” she admits. “Now, I cheat and I put a four-foot tree in an urn on my desk, and from outside it looks huge. It’s perfect!”

She loves the nostalgia of unpacking old ornaments, but New Year’s is her favorite holiday. “It’s about reconnecting with friends, catching up, and just being together. That’s what I love most.”

Ask Mary Carol for festive design advice, and she’ll tell you to start with heart—and a little greenery. “Good greens and ribbon can make anything beautiful,” she says. “But beyond that, invest in art and lighting. They give a home its warmth.”

She also believes in using what you have. “We always tell people to get your grandmother’s china out, mix it up, use it. Don’t save the good stuff. Enjoy it.” It’s the same philosophy that’s made her stores and her life so magnetic. An invitation to live beautifully, not just decorate beautifully.

Looking back, Mary Carol says her proudest accomplishment isn’t the business itself but the people it brought into her life. “Almost all my friendships have come through the store,” she says softly. “That’s what I cherish most.”

As for what’s next? She smiles. “Whatever Rebecca dreams up! I’ll just be along for the ride.” You can shop with Mary Carol and Rebecca at Diebolt’s, located in the Gillham House Antiques in Midtown on Fridays and Saturdays.

There is nothing more magical than immersing yourself in the shimmering light fantasy experience at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens! You and your family can visit through December 30th.

This Luminary Walk began wowing visitors in 1999 as a single-night event created by the passionate volunteers of the nonprofit group, Friends of the Arboretum (FOTA.) Their goal was to invite the community to experience the Arboretum in a new way during the winter season while raising funds to support its growth.

“The response was so positive that the event continued to expand, and today, it has grown into a seasonal tradition spanning more than 20 nights in the event schedule!” noted Brit Waye, Community Engagement Manager.

The event is organized by FOTA, a division of The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park and remains their largest annual fundraiser. Proceeds support their mission to preserve, enhance, and promote this community treasure. Over the years, funds from Luminary Walk and other “Friends” events like Terra Luna, Botanical Brewfest, and the Spring Plant Sale have helped make significant improvements to the Arboretum, including the Train Garden, two greenhouses, educational programs, and many garden enhancements. FOA is proud to have contributed $2.3 million toward the LongHouse Visitor Center.

“What began as a small community idea has grown into one of the region’s most cherished holiday traditions, and it continues to support the Arboretum’s long-term growth and impact,” she expressed.

This year, guests can choose from four unique ways to experience the Luminary Walk, each designed for different interests and accessibility needs, including the Traditional Luminary Walk on Weekends. This family-friendly experience includes everything from glowing candlelit paths in the quiet winter woods to festive colorful light displays in the Children’s Garden and Gnome and Fairy Villages. Families can enjoy photos with Santa, complimentary hot cider, and live musical performances stationed throughout the gardens with food and treats from Jack Stack Barbecue and Jack’s Kettle Corn.

The Adults-Only Candlelight Stroll will happen on select Thursdays is a friends-night-out or date-night evening for adults who want to enjoy the beauty of the lights in a more peaceful setting while enjoying wine and other adult drinks.

The Electric Glow will occur on Limited Capacity Nights for visitors desiring a low-sensory experience. It focuses solely on the electric

light displays without additional programming or large crowds. This option is ideal for guests who prefer a calm environment.

December 1-3 are reserved for those with accessibility needs, with glow carts and such.

To enhance the mood, a magical lineup of live entertainment will perform during Traditional Luminary Walk weekends and the Adults-Only Candlelight Stroll evenings, including classical ensembles, opera, jazz, Celtic folk, world music, acoustic favorites, holiday carolers, barbershop quartets, big band swing, and local choirs.

Guests this year can bring a piece of this magical experience home. As it will be the final year to experience the magic of their whimsical, beloved Gnome and Fairy Villages, each handcrafted from natural materials collected at the Arboretum will be available for purchase. They can be picked up after the display closes in February. Proceeds will directly support future improvements at the Arboretum through FOA fundraising.

“It is a wonderful way for the community to enjoy a piece of Luminary Walk history while giving back to the gardens we all love,” she smiled. “We look forward to welcoming everyone to celebrate with us.”

For Michelle Illig, the holiday season is more than twinkling lights and festive gatherings. It is a heartfelt reminder of what matters most. Though originally from the Chicagoland area, Michelle has spent the past twelve years building a beautiful life and creating meaningful traditions in Kansas City. Now, with her husband, Brian, and two children, her home radiates warmth, and she has found new ways to celebrate the magic of the season.

“Although I miss my family and friends from Chicago,” Michelle shares, “I’ve loved creating new traditions and memories here. Especially now with two children of my own, the magic feels alive in every corner of the house. For Brian and I, the holidays mean connection, the blending of old traditions and new memories that we’ll carry on for years to come.”

Entering the Illig home immediately conveys a sense of warmth and hospitality. The entryway, filled with natural light and rich architectural details, sets a tone that is inviting. “We wanted the entryway to feel like an embrace, sophisticated, warm, and elegant,” Michelle explains. “The softly lit pair of Christmas trees sets the tone, elegant, sparkling, and softly glowing. It’s a perfect welcome that can be enjoyed both visually and socially as we sit around the table with friends.”

This year, Michelle reimagined her holiday décor to encourage connection and conversation. After years of showcasing one statement tree in the foyer, she decided to move that centerpiece into the bar area and introduce two trees in the entryway instead. “The trees now complement the glass table where we play mahjong and enjoy cocktails,” she says. “It’s not just a show space anymore, it’s a cozy, festive area to play games and socialize.”

That sense of community and joy shines brightest in Michelle’s new mahjong holiday space, a fresh tradition she is excited to continue. “This is the first year I wanted to create a mahjong holiday experience in our home,” she says with a smile. “The glow of the tree lights mixed with the laughter and gentle clink of the tiles creates the coziest atmosphere. I have a few Christmas-themed tiles and mats, but also some neutrals that fit my décor. It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and connection, a quiet moment of fun that still feels luxurious and celebratory.”

I have a few decorations from my mom that I admired as a child, and she has some from her mom. I love that mix of modern and classic, it’s tradition layered with love.”

Much of Michelle’s holiday joy extends beyond her home and into the community she has come to cherish. Loch Lloyd Country Club has become the backdrop for many of her favorite seasonal traditions. “Every year, I host an intimate Christmas dinner for my college girlfriends at home, with a curated meal by the Executive Chef at Loch Lloyd and a ‘favorite things’ gift exchange,” she shares. “The next day, we attend the Ladies Holiday Luncheon at the club, which includes local shopping and a fabulous lunch. Later in December, we take our children to the Santa Brunch and the Loch Lloyd Express or gingerbread-making night. Loch Lloyd Country Club knows how to do the holidays.”

For Michelle, it all comes back to connection, whether it is laughter around a mahjong table, a shared meal with lifelong friends, or quiet moments at home with her family. “It’s a time to slow down and truly soak in the joy of being together,” she reflects. “That’s what the holidays are all about.”

HOLIDAY COCKTAILS & COZY CREATIONS

SPICED CINNAMON RUM FLIP

A luscious holiday cocktail with warming spices, rich texture, and a beautiful cinnamon garnish.

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 oz dark or spiced rum

• 3/4 oz cinnamon simple syrup

• 1 oz heavy cream

• 1 whole egg

• Dash of ground nutmeg

• Dash of vanilla extract

Garnish: cinnamon stick and a light dusting of nutmeg or cinnamon

Make Cinnamon Simple Syrup:

Combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water, and 2 cinnamon sticks in a saucepan. Simmer for 10 mins, let cool, and strain. Store in the fridge.

Add rum, cinnamon syrup, cream, egg, vanilla, and a pinch of nutmeg to a shaker. Shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds to emulsify the egg. Strain into a coupe or stemmed glass like the one in your photo. Top with a cinnamon stick across the rim and a dusting of nutmeg or cinnamon. Optional: Add 1/2 oz chilled espresso for a coffee kick.

FESTIVE CRANBERRY GIN FIZZ

A bright, elegant cocktail with a foamy top and a hint of holiday spirit.

INSTRUCTIONS:

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 oz gin

• 1 oz cranberry juice

• 3/4 oz lemon juice

• 1/2 oz simple syrup

• 1 egg white

Optional: splash of sparkling water or club soda

Garnish: fresh rosemary or thyme sprig

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a cocktail shaker, combine gin, cranberry juice, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds to create the frothy top. Double strain into a chilled coupe glass to get that smooth, foamy top. Add a small splash of sparkling water if you’d like a bit of fizz. Gently place a sprig of rosemary or thyme on top of the foam.

Whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply treating yourself, these holiday drinks are guaranteed to bring a little extra cheer to your cup.

BOURBON VANILLA

BEAN HOT CHOCOLATE

An ultra-creamy, chocolatey holiday drink with a hit of warm bourbon and a vanilla bean twist.

• 2 cups whole milk

• 1/2 cup heavy cream

INGREDIENTS:

• 1/2 cup high-quality dark chocolate (chopped or chips)

• 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

• 2 tbsp sugar or maple syrup

• 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

• Pinch of sea salt

• 2 oz bourbon

Topping: 4 large marshmallows

Optional garnish: grated dark chocolate, whipped cream, cinnamon

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, cream, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Whisk until smooth and heated through. Add chopped dark chocolate and stir constantly until melted and silky. Lower heat if needed to avoid scorching. Remove from heat, then stir in bourbon. Taste and adjust sweetness or strength to your liking. Top with marshmallows. Add whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg, and shaved chocolate.

Optional: Add a pinch of cinnamon and cayenne for spicy depth.

Kid-friendly version: Omit bourbon and add peppermint extract or caramel syrup instead.

HOLIDAY SPICED GINGERBREAD LATTE

A warm, frothy, and festively spiced drink perfect for winter nights.

INGREDIENTS:

For the latte:

• 1 shot of espresso (or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee)

• 3/4 cup milk

• 2 tbsp gingerbread syrup

• Whipped cream

For the gingerbread syrup:

• 1/2 cup water

• 1/2 cup brown sugar

• 1 tbsp molasses

• 1/2 tsp ground ginger

• 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

• 1/4 tsp nutmeg

• 1/8 tsp ground cloves

• 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Optional toppings:

• Ground cinnamon or nutmeg for dusting

• Marshmallow

• Crushed gingerbread cookie around the rim or on top

INSTRUCTIONS:

Make the gingerbread syrup:

In a small saucepan, combine water, brown sugar, molasses, and spices. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract, and let cool. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Prepare the drink:

Brew your espresso or strong coffee. Heat and froth your milk. In your glass, add 2 tablespoons of the gingerbread syrup. Pour in the espresso, then the steamed milk, stirring gently to combine. Spoon frothed milk or whipped cream on top. Dust with cinnamon or nutmeg.

Optional: Rim the glass with crushed gingerbread cookie crumbs for extra flair.

As the clock counts down to midnight, few things feel more special than gathering around a beautifully set table with the people you love most. For Kansas City home décor icons Mary Carol of Nell Hills and Diebolt's and her business partner, Rebecca Wood, New Year’s Eve is the perfect opportunity to mix sparkle with sentiment, creating a setting that feels festive yet warm and inviting.

Their latest table design captures exactly that spirit. “Our theme here is obviously New Year’s Eve,” Rebecca laughs. “We found these cute little ‘ring for champagne’ bells, and it all started from there. Mary Carol saw them and said, ‘Oh, I want that at my place setting!’ So, we built the whole table around that playful touch.”

From there, the magic unfolded naturally. Candlelight glows softly across the table, setting a celebratory tone. Tiny disco balls and balloons bring in just the right amount of shimmer and fun. “It’s really more of an intimate little gathering of close friends,” Rebecca says, “so we wanted it to feel festive without being over the top.”

One of their favorite touches is something simple yet stunning: the napkin bows. “We love bows,” Mary Carol admits. “We used wide satin ribbon for our napkin rings, which is so easy to do but has such a wow factor. It says, ‘Let’s celebrate!’ without taking hours to prepare.” Each setting also includes a cheerful party horn, a whimsical nod to the midnight toast to come.

Mary Carol and Rebecca are known for their relaxed approach to design, encouraging hosts to mix and match rather than stress over perfection. “We mixed different china patterns on this table,” Rebecca explains. “We actually used three kinds if you count the bread

and butter plates. It gives the table personality.” A gleaming candelabra anchors the look, while a soup tureen repurposed as a centerpiece adds a creative twist. “A lot of people have pieces like that sitting around,” Rebecca notes. “Just fill them with disco balls or ornaments and you’ve got a beautiful centerpiece.!”

Even the tablecloth carries a story. The soft square of decorator fabric belongs to their friend, Judy, who often reminds them not to take entertaining too seriously. “We were getting caught up in the details, polishing silver, worrying about perfection,” Mary Carol recalls fondly. “And Judy said, ‘You’re not entertaining the Queen!’ She’s right. It’s not about perfection. It’s about people.”

That sentiment captures the heart of Mary Carol and Rebecca’s philosophy. “Take the time to invite people into your home,” Rebecca says. “That’s one of the kindest things you can do for your friends and family. It doesn’t have to be fancy or stressful. The best gatherings are the ones where everyone feels relaxed and loved.”

Their New Year’s Eve table proves that a beautiful celebration doesn’t require weeks of planning or endless polish. With a few ribbons, a touch of sparkle, and plenty of laughter, you can set a scene that welcomes joy right along with the new year.

After all, as Mary Carol’s mother always said, “If you have fun setting the table, your guests will have fun sitting at it.”

method:

Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin.

Dry shake (no ice), then add ice and shake again.
