The Kids & Pets Issue

Revisiting Our Kirkwood Childhoods

The two of us have been in Kirkwood almost our whole lives. Lilly was born in St. Louis, and Olivia moved to Kirkwood at the age of 2. We first officially met in 8th grade, and we were ecstatic to find out that we were both joining the cross country team freshman year at Kirkwood High School (see photo!). Even though we didn’t think of ourselves as kids at 14 and 15, looking back on that time, we were so young – we had no clue what the future held for us. We only wish our current selves could travel back in time and tell those little freshmen that we would be working together on our hometown magazine, just to see the look on their faces!

As our friendship quickly developed, we realized that we grew up only two streets over from each other near downtown Kirkwood. We had definitely played house or dress up at someone’s house together as kids. Our story is yet another that proves how interconnected Kirkwood is, and how impactful it is to grow up in this community and its surrounding areas. As a child, you take for granted the freedom and safety that this area provides; you don’t quite understand yet that this is possible because of the caring people here.

Even though we both spent most of our childhoods in Kirkwood, working with Kirkwood City Lifestyle Magazine has provided us a powerful opportunity to further understand our hometown. We have spoken to many important people in this community, specifically those who directly impact kids and pets, which became (another) full-circle moment for us as Kirkwood natives. For example, we spoke with Dr. Stefanie Dougherty of Dougherty Orthodontics about the importance of kids’ confidence and self esteem, and how her practice lifts up each and every patient. We attended Olympic and Paralympic Day at Washington University to speak with Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee about how her JJK Foundation allows kids to find their passions and skills. The cover story on Pedal the Cause showed us how dedicated our community is to their children.

We are so proud to call this city our hometown, and so grateful to have a place here even after “growing up” – although let’s face it, we always have the room to keep growing! We hope you enjoy the Kids and Pets issue.

Best,

PEDAL ON THE ROAD to end cancer.

PEDAL THE CAUSE IS FUNDING RESEARCH THAT IS CHANGING THE NARRATIVE.

BY LUCY ROGERS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Pedal the Cause is more than the region’s top cycling event. It’s a way of life, a celebration, and a movement fueled by the courage to end cancer. 100% of participant-raised funds support innovative cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Those early-stage cancer research projects are changing the narrative on the road to end cancer.

The Pedal the Cause Kids Challenge gives kiddos ages 3-13 the opportunity to join the fight against cancer in an impactful, meaningful way. With registration, each child receives a personalized fundraising webpage to raise money for critical cancer research. As with the main event, 100% of every dollar raised by participants funds vital adult and pediatric cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Pedal the Cause’s Ride for a Child program pairs teams that are fundraising to end cancer with pediatric oncology patients who are actively going through treatment at Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. For participating children, Ride for a Child offers an exciting distraction from their treatments and gives them a supportive team of individuals that will train, fundraise and ride in their honor. It is an inspiring way for participants to connect with a child who is receiving state-of-the-art care and more advanced treatment for cancer because of the funds raised by Pedal the Cause. Since 2011, over 3,000 Kids Challenge participants have raised over $619,000 for cancer research.

We share our stories to inspire our community. We’re all driven to see a world without cancer.

Children and adults who take part in Pedal the Cause bring us closer to the day we live in a world without this disease. Their fundraising dollars directly fund early-stage cancer research. These burgeoning projects often lead to incremental successes that garner large external grants, which have produced groundbreaking treatments, clinical trials, preventions and early detection diagnostics. Nick Overkamp, Commercial Relationship Manager at Enterprise Bank & Trust, is living proof.

“I am proud to join Pedal the Cause in the fight against cancer. My first doctor’s appointment was on December 14, 2016, and by December 28, 2016, I was in surgery. Chemotherapy followed in February 2017. I spent the balance of that year getting my strength back and trying to understand what had happened to me. Cancer is a terrible disease. What it does to you and those you love is indescribable. My dad was deep in his cancer fight when I was diagnosed, and my dear friend Eli received his cancer diagnosis in September 2017. Suddenly, cancer had invaded every corner of my life overnight. Ultimately, I lost my father to cancer in February 2018, followed by Eli in September 2018. Cancer took a piece of me, but it didn’t get all of me. February 2022 marked my 5th anniversary of being cancer-free. The dollars raised for cancer research impact lives. I’m living proof.”

In July 2019, a friend asked Nick to lead a Pedal the Cause team. “I hadn’t been on a bike

in years, especially since my diagnosis,” he said. “But I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ We raised about $8,500 with 19 people in just 60 days.”

Reflecting on his first ride, Nick found it therapeutic. “That day was cathartic. Pedal the Cause is about raising money, but it’s more than that. It’s about making it as personal as we can,” he emphasized.

Joining the Pedal the Cause Board in 2023, Nick highlighted its impact: “Every dollar invested attracts thirteen additional dollars from outside sources like the NIH. Siteman Cancer Center’s work on a national stage is monumental.”

Under Nick’s leadership, Enterprise Bank & Trust’s team has grown significantly, raising $43,600 last year and over $140,000 since that first ride. “We share our stories to inspire our community. We’re all driven to see a world without cancer,” he said.

Join Pedal the Cause the weekend of September 21 and 22. While it is a cycling challenge, it’s not a race. Riders go at their own pace for as short as 10 miles to the full course of 100 miles. The first five miles of the course are entirely closed to road traffic, making it the perfect out-and-back trek for beginners and families. Pedal the Cause also offers a spin zone, or you can “ride” virtually on your own. If you don’t have a bike, Big Shark Bicycle Company, another community-oriented Enterprise Bank & Trust client, will help you rent one.

Manager at Enterprise Bank & Trust

The event will be held at the Family Arena in St. Charles. Taste the Cause is the annual celebration the day before the Pedal the Cause ride. Enjoy the best food and drink from the St. Louis region’s most renowned restaurants, live music, the Living Proof processional honoring cancer survivors, thrivers, and fighters, and the Inspirational Program and fireworks display.

Dr. Stefanie Dougherty, DMD, MSD, creates a welcoming haven for families seeking top-tier orthodontic care.

Dr. Dougherty is married to Jeff Dougherty, whom she met in dental school, and they have two boys.

When children and parents step into Dougherty Orthodontics, they are immediately greeted with warm smiles, comforting colors, and the most exciting waiting room they could imagine. This thoughtfully designed space, complete with an ice cream freezer, customizable drink station, and a virtual photo booth, reflects Dr. Stefanie Dougherty’s vision of redefining the orthodontic experience for parents and children in Kirkwood.

“I’m from a small town, and that’s the way I want Dougherty Orthodontics to feel,” said Dr. Dougherty. Her small-town upbringing contributes to her strong moral foundation, allowing her to form meaningful connections with patients and their families. “I want everyone to feel welcome when they walk through our doors -– the way I feel when I go back home.”

As a family-owned, all-women practice, Dougherty Orthodontics offers a level of understanding and personalized care that sets it apart from corporate-owned clinics. Dr. Dougherty emphasized, “I designed this office to be decidedly different, focusing on creating an environment where both parents and children feel comfortable and cared for.”

“It’s a physical reminder of why we do what we do,” Dr. Dougherty explained.

Dr. Stefanie Dougherty

The team at Dougherty Orthodontics understands the challenges families face when it comes to dental care. They strive to create an environment where anxieties are soothed and trust is built. “I had one mom comment just the other day on the level of confidence her daughter gained from coming to our office,” beamed Dr. Dougherty.  “That’s what it’s all about – creating beautiful smiles and nurturing confidence every step of the way.”

Recognizing the crucial role parents play in their children’s orthodontic journey, Dr. Dougherty ensures they are fully involved in the treatment process. “We cater to the needs of our patients and their families with the highest level of service and care,” she stated. This commitment to family-centered care is evident in every aspect of the practice.

Dr. Dougherty’s passion for orthodontics began early and was inspired by her own experiences as a child. Her personal journey directly inspires her thoughtful approach, allowing her to empathize and connect with young patients and their parents. “We don’t just provide orthodontic treatment; we empower children by boosting their confidence and self-esteem,” she shared.

Located at 2901 Dougherty Ferry Rd., the office was designed and built from the ground up by Dr. Dougherty herself. One of the most touching features is the thank you card wall which showcases heartfelt notes, photos, and artwork from grateful patients and their families. “It’s a physical reminder of why we do what we do,” Dr. Dougherty explained.

At Dougherty Orthodontics, personalized treatment plans are the norm. Whether it’s traditional braces, clear aligners, or innovative solutions like LightForce, each plan is tailored to the individual needs of the patient and discussed collaboratively with parents.

“What we value goes way beyond the smile,” Dr. Dougherty said. “We’re committed to providing exceptional orthodontic care in an environment that feels comfortable and welcoming to the whole family. It’s about creating confident, beautiful smiles and positive, lasting memories for both children and parents alike.”

Jackie Joyner-Kersee’s Lasting Legacy in St. Louis

A conversation with our St. Louis Olympian about her foundation.

We know Jackie Joyner-Kersee as a world record holder and Olympian track star, but she’s also an STL native who continues to inspire countless young lives through the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation.

KCLM: What would you love our readers to know about the foundation?

JJK: The success of every child begins with opportunity. Help us open more doors and shape tomorrow’s leaders by making a difference today. We use sports to get kids in the door, but students are also learning and going through our curriculum. It’s important that each student is at grade level, so we have the JJK Academy for students from kindergarten to 4th grade.

KCLM: What values does the foundation teach?

JJK: Being able to sow into our kids at a young age how to build confidence along with working on being a critical thinker. When teachers are having students write a critical statement, they probably don’t connect with it right then. But, later in life, it’s our hope and dream that it’ll start to manifest. You start understanding your values, setting your goals, and appreciate your own self respect, determination, and grit.

KCLM: How can our community of readers get involved with the foundation’s work?

JJK: I encourage people to visit – there’s nothing like seeing what’s happening at the JJK Center. We are always looking for volunteers and ways to connect with our young people. For the readers who would like to get a tour, if I’m there, I would personally give the tour!

GIRLS STATE EMPOWERS

YOUNG KIRKWOOD LEADERS

Cece Bartin and Maddie Rowan share their story of attending Girls State and starring in the Apple TV documentary “Girls State.”

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Kirkwood has always been a community that fosters passion, talent, and possibility among its residents. This nurturing environment has encouraged remarkable individuals like Cece Bartin, Maddie Rowan, and Anna Chellis, now Kirkwood High School alumni, to attend the Missouri Girls State conference in summer 2022. Girls State is a leadership program where attendees simulate building a government from scratch, encouraging young women to engage in their political system.

Beyond these students’ participation in such an enriching program, Maddie and Cece were also chosen to star in the Apple TV documentary “Girls State,” which is now available on Apple TV after premiering at Sundance Film Festival in January 2024. Both Cece and Maddie were pleasantly surprised by the outpouring of support for their participation in both Girls State and the film.

“When I got back home, so many peers were interested in politics and wanted to talk with me about it,” said Cece, who successfully ran for Governor. “They didn’t see Girls State as ‘You’re a nerd.’ Instead, they said, ‘You’re so cool.’ They were so excited for me.”

Cece takes pride in how the documentary highlights young women’s shared insecurities – even if it means being followed with cameras, which was a new experience for both of them. “One of the best parts of the documentary is how it shows how flawed and insecure we all are. Often I feel like everyone has it more figured out or is more confident. Watching the documentary, I see that we’re all going through the same emotions; we all have too high expectations for ourselves and compare ourselves to others. I hope young women see it and know they’re not the only ones who feel this way, and these really cool people around them also feel this way and take that with them throughout their life.”

Kirkwood High School’s educators played a crucial role in encouraging the girls to get involved in Girls State. “Kirkwood has fantastic educators, and they care deeply about students being involved,” said Maddie. “Mr. Ravenscraft [my AP Government teacher] pushed me to go to Girl’s State. I’m thankful for the teachers, truly.”

Both Cece and Maddie want to inspire younger girls to recognize the power of their voices. Maddie advises, “Younger girls should know their voices are powerful. I think that Girls State gave me that. I was in a room full of people who had both powerful voices and things to say. The skill set that comes from public speaking is so important. Get involved and do things that make you uncomfortable.”

Cece and Maddie’s journey through Girls State illustrates the impact of a supportive environment on young women, empowering them to become confident, engaged leaders. Reflecting on how to increase women’s involvement in government, Cece says, “The most common question I get asked is, ‘How can we make women more involved in government?’ I think my answer has changed over time, but the big idea centers around thinking about how to continue to motivate and uplift one another.”

“YOUNGER GIRLS SHOULD KNOW THEIR VOICES ARE POWERFUL. I WAS IN A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE WHO HAD BOTH POWERFUL VOICES AND THINGS TO SAY... GET INVOLVED AND DO THINGS THAT MAKE YOU UNCOMFORTABLE.”

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR JOURNEY AS A SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER?

As a transplant to St. Louis, I wanted to inspire other moms to get out and explore this wonderful city. My goal was to connect with the community and showcase the amazing experiences and hidden gems that St. Louis has to offer. I share tips, experiences, and moments that highlight challenges and triumphs.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING A MOM INFLUENCER?

Connecting with and supporting other moms on their journeys has been incredibly fulfilling. Being able to inspire and uplift others, and building a community where we share experiences and celebrate milestones together, brings me so much joy. I hope to encourage other moms to embrace adventure.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE?

One of the biggest challenges is the constant comparison that comes with seeing how other moms are doing things online. It can be tough not to question my own methods and decisions when I’m bombarded with curated images of perfection. I strive to stay authentic and remind myself that everyone’s journey is unique, but the pressure to measure up can still be a struggle.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE YOUR KIDS’ PRIVACY AND SAFETY ONLINE?

I prioritize my children’s privacy and safety by avoiding posting stories in real-time. Instead, I wait until we have left locations before sharing our experiences online. This approach helps protect them and ensures we can enjoy our outings without concerns about immediate online exposure.

HOW DO YOU INVOLVE YOUR KIDS IN YOUR CONTENT CREATION PROCESS?

They love joining me in exploring new places—whether it’s parks, restaurants, or other venues—which they enjoy discovering alongside me.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FAMILY ACTIVITIES TO SHARE WITH YOUR FOLLOWERS?

I love sharing our adventures exploring new restaurants, discovering great parks, and experiencing anything local to St. Louis.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MOMS TO FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM?

I love following Allison Field because she’s hilarious and keeps it real. I also admire Alaina Hinkle for her healthy recipes. Both are local Missouri moms, which makes them more relatable and inspiring to me.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO MOMS STRUGGLING WITH THE PRESSURES OF SOCIAL MEDIA?

Remember, social media often showcases the highlights of people’s lives. It’s important not to compare your everyday reality to someone else’s curated posts. Focus on what truly matters to you and your family.
