The great moral philosopher Dr. Seuss once said, “You ought to be thankful a whole heaping lot, for the places and people you’re lucky you’re not!”
As we enjoy autumn in Utah and move into the holiday season, it's a natural time to reflect on the things that we’re grateful for. Maybe you’re thankful for family and friends, or the natural beauty that surrounds us here in Utah. Others may be grateful for football and pizza.

Still others have a different perspective on gratitude. As the Swiss poet Henri Frédéric Amiel said, “Thankfulness may consist merely of words. Gratitude is shown in acts." To emphasize this point, this month we’re featuring two members of our community who live the ideal that Amiel praised.
Our first example is Monte White of Ski Trucks. When his father passed away from cancer, Monte showed his gratitude by giving up a successful career in Wyoming and moving home to preserve the family business. It hasn’t been easy, and at times, he’s questioned his sanity. But he thrives on preserving his father’s legacy of making the joy of winter sports accessible to everyone in the community.
Our second example, Jen Fox of Jen Fox Photography, illustrates the ability to be grateful for lessons born from challenging circumstances. After experiencing a complicated childhood with negative messages about self-image, Jennifer decided to be grateful for the valuable lessons it taught her. Then she turned that gratitude into a powerful way to use photography to bolster each child’s self-esteem.
However you feel your gratitude, this month take a moment to pause, count your blessings, and DO something to express that gratitude. You’ll be glad that you did.

As the air turns crisp and leaves begin to fall, it’s time to start thinking about winter car prep. Cold temperatures and slick roads make winter one of the most critical seasons for vehicle maintenance. A winter readiness check by a trusted professional can help ensure your vehicle is up to the task.
Start with your tires. If your tread depth is below 4/32 it’s time to consider replacement. Winter tires offer the best performance in snow and ice, but a good set of all-season tires can work for many drivers. Not sure what’s right for you? Have a conversation with your shop about your specific driving needs.
Next, we inspect brakes, suspension and steering components, fluid levels, heat and defrost functions, lights, and alignment. A commonly overlooked item? Wiper blades and washer fluid. Poor visibility is a major winter hazard, so check and top off regularly.
It’s also smart to pack a small emergency kit. We recommend a lithium-powered jump starter over traditional jumper cables—it’s compact, easy to use, and especially helpful during coldweather battery failures. Add in a blanket or warm clothing, bottled water, simple shelf stable snacks, a headlamp, and road flares in case you’re stranded without heat or visibility.
Preparing your car now can help avoid costly repairs— and more importantly, keep you and your family safe on the road this winter.

THE STORY OF SKI TRUCKS

“Grandparents that were buying stuff when they were kids bring their grandkids in.
The story of Ski Trucks begins in 1969, in the back of a ’56 Chevy pickup.
His second winter at Brigham Young University, Jeff White started selling refurbished skis out of the back of his old truck… and his little company, Ski Trucks, was born! From there, the business grew into a semi-trailer, then bounced between that and a brick-and-mortar building, until he could afford a permanent place.
“We still have customers who remember buying their first set of skis out of the back of that trailer,” says Zoe White, Jeff’s daughter-in-law.
Now, skiers and snowboarders alike call Ski Trucks a Salt Lake Valley staple for affordable winter gear.
“We’re working on four generations,” Monte says. “Grandparents that were buying stuff when they were kids bring their grandkids in.”
In a way, Ski Trucks has always been a family business, especially for Jeff’s youngest son, Monte. For the first twenty or so years of his life, he was part of the business along with his siblings. “My childhood was either working here or using the resources here to go play in the mountains.”
In his early 20s, Monte moved to Wyoming, met his wife Zoe, and lived there for 17 years doing oil field work. Without fail, every winter, they’d make the annual trek back to Ski Trucks to outfit their three kids in gear and go skiing and snowboarding.
In 2020, Jeff was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and passed away about three months later. Amid their grief, Monte and Zoe were left with the inexorable decision of liquidating the business and its assets, or giving up everything they’d created in Wyoming to take over the ski shop.
Monte recalls asking his father if he wanted Ski Trucks to run into the future. Jeff said, “That’s what I’ve always wanted.” Staying true to Jeff’s wish to have Ski Trucks continue after his passing, Monte and Zoe decided to move back to Utah and take over.
Between losing his father and the global pandemic, 2020 was a rough year for Monte and the business, both emotionally and economically. “It has been a struggle beyond anything I’ve ever had to experience,” Monte says.
So what keeps them going? For Monte, the answer to that question is easy—legacy and community. That’s the foundation upon which his father built Ski Trucks, and Monte wants to continue shaping the business on those values.
Central to Ski Truck’s legacy is a commitment to the customer, which Monte learned from his father. He says that although his father was a bit of a hoarder, it came from a place of resourcefulness. “He grew up in poverty. He learned how to value something for the value that it had, not what somebody assumed the value was. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure… that was his tagline.”
But Monte and Zoe have done it together, as a family, working alongside their children, extended family, and employees who become family. “At the end of the day, it’s worth it. It’s great having people that you love and care about around you all the time.”
Monte says that his father was old school. “He didn’t get technology,” Monte says. When he and Zoe took over, there wasn’t an inventory of the over 200,000 items in the shop. “He literally ran it out of his head... He just winged it the way he thought it needed to be done, which worked for him.”
But in this modern era, with industry standards and competition, technology is an important part of the playbook. Now, Monte and Zoe are working to improve Ski Trucks’ website, and are finally taking stock of inventory to sell gear online, all while maintaining Monte’s father’s legacy of care for the community and affordability.
“It’s expensive to live,” Monte says. “Regular people are being outpriced,” Zoe adds. “Resort tickets are

The Ski Trucks mindset is that winter sports shouldn’t be elitist, but available to everyone.
expensive. Getting up there is expensive. Gear is expensive.” Ski Trucks aims to close that gap—at least for gear.
And it stems from a desire to help people have the best experience outdoors as possible. Monte says, “Regardless of what you’re doing out there or your experience level, there’s the perfect equipment here for you.” The Ski Trucks mindset is that winter sports shouldn’t be elitist, but available to everyone.
“Don’t be afraid of having to get six brand new ski sets for your kids,” Zoe says. “We have all kinds of ways of trying to get people on the right gear for the right price.”
Part of this commitment to the community is an awareness of accessibility. Ski Trucks is a 25,000-square-foot building full of equipment ranging from boots to goggles to skis to snowboards. That

much stuff in that much space can be overwhelming, especially during the peak season, when there are often over a hundred people in the shop at once.
Mindful of the overwhelm, Ski Trucks offers offhour appointments to the elderly, those with sensory sensitivities, or others who’d prefer to shop in peace and quiet.
Monte says he simply thinks about how he’d like to be treated when going in to get outfitted for skis, and models the business after that.
“Everybody’s treated like family,” Monte says. “We firmly believe that if we offer a service and we offer the experience, the product’s going to sell itself.”
Customers feel that sense of care and community. Andrew Stott, a local father of five, has been outfitting
his family at Ski Trucks for more than 15 years. Andrew recalls meeting Jeff White as a teenager, when he bought a pair of backcountry skis out of the back of Jeff’s truck. He’s kept coming back ever since.
Ski Trucks’ community focus extends beyond the in-store experience. The business still holds fast to its founder’s “one man’s trash, another man’s treasure” mindset. Monte and Zoe partner with local recycling companies to grab gear on its way to the dump. “If it’s on the way to the landfill, we’ll process it,” Monte says. Sometimes, they even repurpose skis into custom furniture.
Ski Trucks is even trying to create a nonprofit aspect of the business and develop a sliding price scale for families in need. They offer military discounts, work with the YMCA, and make donations to local organizations.
Andrew teaches adaptive skiing and snowboarding at the National Ability Center in Park City, where Monte’s
generosity shows up on the mountain as well. “Monte donated five brand new snowboards to NAC last year for adaptive snowboard training, which was really, really needed,” Andrew says. “They are very genuine, very kind people. They take care of people.”
Experiences like Andrew’s are what Monte and Zoe do it for. “We’re never going to get rich,” he continues. “We knew that when we signed up. We’re always going to have used carpet and duct tape on the floors, because it ain’t about that. It’s about keeping the budget down and helping people have the best experience out there as possible.”
“That’s the legacy,” Zoe says. “The legacy is Ski Trucks.”
Ski Trucks is located in South Salt Lake at 1260 W North Temple St, Salt Lake City. Their collection includes new and used equipment, ski bikes, ski blades, and more to help elevate your mountain experience.

They are very genuine, very kind ... they take care of people. “ ”

Jen working with a video-game loving client
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABI FALIN HORSPOOL

“When I was in fourth grade,” boutique photographer Jen Fox says, “I was a little chunky, I had inch-thick glasses, braces, and acne… Needless to say, I was a little picked on.”
Her parents wanted to help, but didn’t know how. Because they knew how much family portraits meant to Jen, they said that if she got to a certain weight, they’d take family photos. “I finally made it down to their perfect size when I was sixteen,” she remembers, “and we finally got a family portrait on the wall.”
That memory is complicated for her, but also formative. It planted in her a desire to help others, especially kids, see themselves as good enough, just how they are.
As she built her boutique photography business, Jen saw how powerful it is for kids to see themselves on the wall.
When a section of the Great Salt Lake turned pink, Jen immediately thought of her daughter’s obsession with mermaids. She remembers the moment she hung the mermaid transformation portrait on the wall. “Oh my gosh, she lost her mind. She was dancing and screaming, ‘That’s me, Mommy!’”
Those reactions are everything to Jen. She wants kids to see themselves for who they are—not stiffly posed, but full of quirks and personality. “Those little moments… they’re gone so quickly! That’s why it’s so important to capture them before they’re gone and not have them just sit in our phones.”
CONTINUED >
The quirks and personality can come out in some delightfully funny ways. If the kid she’s photographing is a cowgirl-loving, baseball-playing kid, she says, “Let’s go out to the baseball diamond in your cowgirl get-up and take pictures of you on the baseball diamond, because that’s who you are.” She says, “I want that little girl to have this cute little silly portrait up on her wall of her being her unique self.”
Jen says it’s hard to overemphasize the importance of printing and hanging the photos. In fact, she works according to a guiding philosophy: “If it’s not printed, it never happened.”
Finally, she has someone she works with to physically hang the artwork on her client’s wall, if that’s what they want. To her, that’s the most crucial part, because Jen believes that physically hanging family photos on the wall builds connection.
“I think the most important thing I want to get across is that we need to feel connected to the people we love. And one of the easiest ways to feel that connection is to walk into your home, walk past the wall to your kitchen, and see this image of the people you love.”
Those little moments… they’re gone so quickly!
Years ago, Jen booked a session with a photographer, resulting in over 400 digital images. It took her nine months to go through the images, then another three to actually print them. When they came in the mail, they sat on her kitchen table for six months until she bought frames and hung them up.
That’s why it's so important to capture them before they're gone.
Jen ensures her clients don’t face that same problem.
“My goal is to get artwork on walls,” she says. She makes it happen by being there every step of the way.
A photo session with Jen starts with a phone call to assess if she and the client are a good fit. Then, Jen creates a mood board for the photo session and helps her clients pick outfits. After the photo session, she helps them narrow down what to print. “Then there’s the least amount of thought process on their part.”
“When you walk into your home, I want you to be greeted by this gorgeous, custom-framed piece of artwork that makes you feel like your home is giving you a hug when you walk in the door.”
Hanging family photos helps your children see themselves how they really are, not how they may see themselves on the inside. To illustrate this, Jen tells a story of a few years back, when she went to a retreat where everyone had makeup artists and hairstylists prepare them for a professional photo session.
“The next day they brought us the envelopes with our images in them,” Jen says. “I literally almost threw it away because I was like, I don’t even want to see it. I know it’s going to be hideous. It’s always hideous. And then I pulled the image out of the envelope and I just started crying because I was like, ‘Wow, that’s me.’”

Let’s be honest: launching your first business feels a lot like jumping off a cliff and building your parachute on the way down.
Exciting? Absolutely. Terrifying? You bet. But the biggest mistake I see new entrepreneurs make isn’t the fear—it’s the fantasy.
Too many first-timers believe that if they just have a great idea, customers will magically appear like seagulls at a picnic. Spoiler alert: they don’t. A good idea is only step one. The real test is whether people will actually pay for it—and keep paying.
Here in South Jordan, I’ve met more than a few dreamers who poured savings into building the “perfect” product, only to discover later that no one wanted it. It’s like throwing a party and forgetting to send invitations. The key is validation. Talk to real customers before you spend your kids’ college fund. Ask them what problem they’d pay you to solve, then build that—not just what you think is cool.
Another classic slip? Trying to do it all yourself. Yes, you’re scrappy and brilliant, but trust me, bookkeeping at midnight isn’t a badge of honor—it’s a headache. Build a support system: a mentor, a lawyer (hi!), and a solid accountant. They’ll keep you out of trouble while you focus on growth.
So remember: don’t fall in love with the idea. Fall in love with solving a problem. If you can do that, you’re not just building a business—you’re building something people actually need.

When she showed the photo to her hus band, all he said was, “Yeah, that’s what you look like.” Now, Jen keeps that photo displayed where she can see it, a physical reminder of her philosophy that having a professional portrait of yourself on the wall is a way to learn to love yourself for who you are.
“It’s powerful when you have those moments,” she says. “That’s what I do it for.”
So, for Jen, photography isn’t about chasing perfection—it’s about reminding people that they’re already beautiful and worth celebrating.
“I don’t believe that anyone is truly broken,” Jen says. “I think we might have some chips. We might have some glitter glue in places holding us together, but it’s what makes us unique and worth celebrating. We all need to come to a place where we can love that about ourselves and see us the way that the people who love us see us.”

Turn up the volume on your kid’s potential at School of Rock Sandy! Our electrif ying programs blend one-on-one lessons with epic group band rehearsals, transforming beginners into stage-shredding rockstars.

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

Managing wealth today is more than investing wisely. It’s protecting your family’s future and avoiding costly mistakes. Estate planning isn’t only about passing on assets or avoiding probate. It’s about growing wealth taxefficiently and reducing risk. That’s why most successful families rely on a team approach that brings together three key professionals: financial advisors, tax preparers, and estate planning attorneys.
Financial advisors design roadmaps for your money, aligning investments, retirement plans, and cash flow with your lifestyle. They see the big picture, helping you structure assets to meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s dreams.
Tax preparers keep that roadmap efficient. By tracking changing tax laws, they help you keep more of what you earn through smart deductions, income timing, and charitable giving strategies that directly improve your bottom line.
Estate planning attorneys ensure your legacy passes smoothly according to your wishes. Without proper planning, even strong estates can lose value to probate costs, taxes, or family disputes. Wills, trusts, and succession strategies preserve both wealth and family harmony.
Each expert brings unique value, but together they provide something greater: peace of mind. When your financial advisor, tax preparer, and estate attorney work as a unified team, they uncover opportunities, reduce risk, and solve problems before they become expensive. It’s not just about wealth but rather the confidence knowing that your financial life is in capable and coordinated hands.
