February 2026 Publisher’s Letter

As February rolls around, I always find myself in a familiar tug-of-war. On one hand, I want to resist the pull of another commercialized holiday, yet on the other, I can’t help but savor the sweet moments it brings—an excuse to pause, reflect, and celebrate love in all its forms.

Do we opt for a Valentine’s Day date out or settle in for a cozy night at home? A handwritten card or a heartfelt kind word shared over morning coffee? For me, it’s usually a mix of both. Each of us will find our own ways to mark the occasion, shaped by our unique preferences, traditions, and personalities. But what unites us all is the opportunity to remind those around us—partners, friends, family, neighbors—just how much they mean to us.

This month’s issue is dedicated to helping you do just that: celebrating and highlighting the very best of what there is to love in our local community. From the people and places that make our days brighter to the businesses that quietly support us year after year, February is the perfect time to shine a light on what’s close to home.

As we navigate the lingering chill of winter and look ahead to the promise of spring’s arrival, let’s take a moment to slow down and come together with the people who matter most. Whether they’re under your roof, down the street, or woven into the fabric of the community you call home, February offers a wonderful reminder to connect, reflect, and share love in meaningful ways.

“Love local” isn’t just about supporting the businesses in your area—it’s about cherishing what’s near to you in every sense. It’s about the familiar faces, the shared experiences, and the small rituals that bring comfort and joy. So, why not grab a cup of coffee at your favorite local café, enjoy a game night by the fire with your family, or pick up a bottle of wine and some cheese for a relaxed movie night in? Sometimes the simplest moments are the ones we treasure most.

At the heart of everything we do is the belief that together, we’re stronger. Every month, the stories shared within these pages prove that again and again—stories of connection, resilience, creativity, and care that define our community.

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of the life you’re building and the moments you’re creating. Our greatest hope is that this issue inspires you, uplifts you, and helps you love where you live just a little more than before.

Here’s to a February filled with love—both local and beyond!

Tokyo A TASTE OF NIGHTS

Roppongi Is Fairfield’s New Favorite Spot for Sushi, Sake and More!

Ivan Zheng has been in the restaurant business almost his entire life. He began when he first came to this country at 17, and after 30 years in Fairfield County, he’s officially a local.

Today, he owns three Asian Fusion venues, each highlighting Japanese culture: Roishi in Hamden, Misimi in Shelton, and his newest establishment, Roppongi, here in Fairfield, which has quickly become the go-to spot for dining out in town.

PHOTOGRAPHY

The name comes from a district in Tokyo known for its vibrant nightlife and international crowd. Roppongi is based on the Japanese-style izakaya, which is a small bistro offering a shareable small plates menu in a casual, welcoming setting, ideal for meeting friends and enjoying a drink after work.

“We always say, Good sake should be poured by a friend, where good conversation flows freely.” Ivan notes. With the bar as the focal point and vintage Japanese flair woven throughout the décor, that easygoing, social vibe is easy to achieve.

Izakayas also place a strong emphasis on beer and sake. “We wanted to differentiate our restaurant by featuring a wide variety of beverages on our menu,” Ivan explains. Roppongi offers 16 draft beers and 15 different sakes, each with distinct qualities and flavors. One standout is Ozeki Nigori, a pineapple-flavored sake that adds a pop of sweetness to any sushi dish, or you can opt for a cold draft beer like Sapporo, perfect alongside ramen or any of the hot entrees. The restaurant also offers creative non-alcoholic options, such as iced green teas enhanced with flavored syrups and lychee pops.

Indulge in the extensive sushi menu, featuring standouts like the Imperial Lobster & Toro roll, as well as specials like Salmon Yuzu Garlic Citrus Sashimi. Other popular picks include the spicy edamame, Takayuki, Duck Bao, and Ramen. “Our variety of ramen is a fan favorite, especially in the wintertime. Each option has a very unique flavor and can be modified with different toppings and proteins,” says Ivan. Pro tip: Ask for a recommendation, and you may unlock something truly special. Their recommendations often lead to standout dishes you won’t find listed on the menu, think secret menu vibes.

Salmon Yuzu Garlic Citrus Sashimi

The creative menu is at the heart of Ivan’s tireless work to stay one step ahead of culinary trends while preserving Roppongi’s authenticity. But just as critical to the restaurant’s success, he says, is his dedicated team—led by Sandy, Roppongi’s manager—who help make the restaurant a true local mainstay. At the core of everything they do is taking care of their guests and ensuring every experience feels special. As Ivan puts it, “When I get a simple compliment from a guest or see someone enjoying our food, it’s easy to keep going.”

Whether you’re searching for a new lunch favorite (don’t miss the Tom Yam Ramen), an after-work nightcap (the Lycheetini is a must), or a weekend dinner destination (order the Salmon Lover), Roppongi is the perfect place to meet friends for good food and good conversation any night of the week.

EVERYTHING YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE A ROLL LIKE A ROPPONGI SUSHI CHEF

Roll

LIKE A PRO

INGREDIENTS

Sushi Rice:

• 1/2 cup Japanese short-grain rice in 1/2 cup water, cook

• 1 tbsp rice vinegar

• ½ tbsp sugar

• ¼  tsp salt

Sushi Roll Fillings:

• 2 oz smoked salmon (about two pieces)

• 2 tbsp cream cheese (cut into strips)

• ½ cucumber, julienned

• 2 sheets dry nori paper

DIRECTIONS

Cook Perfect Sushi Rice

Rinse the rice 4 to 5 times until water runs mostly clear. Cook rice with water (use a rice cooker or on the stovetop). Carefully warm vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved (be sure not to boil). Fold seasoning into hot rice gently. Fan if you want that glossy, sushi-chef vibe. Let cool to room temp (never the fridge!).

Assemble the Roll

Place nori shiny side down on a bamboo mat. Spread a thin, even layer of rice, leaving 1 inch bare at the top. Flip rice-side down (this makes it inside-out, Philly-style).

Add salmon, cream cheese, and cucumber across the center. Roll tightly using the mat. Seal with a little water.

Cut into 8 pieces with a wet knife. Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi. Enjoy!

In Full Bloom!

Stop and smell the roses with Fresh Flower Bar

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEX TORRES | PARK CITY STUDIOS

Fresh Flower Bar owner, Sarah O'Brien

Modern. Lush. Incredible. That’s how Fairfield County native Sarah O’Brien perfectly sums up the vibe of her cool-girl floral shop, Fresh Flower Bar. After stepping away from a successful corporate career, she launched the business in 2018 when a photo from Pinterest got the creative juices flowing, “I saw a floral arrangement so drop-dead gorgeous that it lived rent-free in my mind for months, and the idea of starting a floral design studio and creating something that beautiful was too compelling to ignore”. She quickly outgrew her original location for the Bronson Road space she now shares with Outdoor Design and Living. “We’re two completely separate businesses,” she says, “but we complement each other perfectly.” We caught up with Sarah to talk inspiration, business, and of course, flowers.

Q: WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE AND WHAT SETS FRESH FLOWER BAR APART?

A: We are a full-service floral design studio specializing in luxury weddings and events. We also offer daily flower deliveries throughout Fairfield County for everyday occasions, and host immersive flower workshops for floral enthusiasts - from beginners to advanced students. We’re most excited about our vintage flower truck, PETALS, which travels to private homes and venues for a unique “build your own bouquet” experience that has been a huge hit for bridal and baby showers.

CONTINUED >

What sets us apart is really the quality of our flowers and our artistry. I knew when I launched the business that I wanted to provide the most exquisite flower arrangements that lasted, so I spent weeks researching flowers with long vase life and unlike any you could find at a grocery store. We often get calls from customers raving about how their flower arrangement lasted 2 weeks! We take great pride in caring for our flowers before they are even designed, so this makes us so happy to hear.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND THE ETHOS OF THE BUSINESS?

A: First and foremost, we are artists and designers. Flowers are our medium. Each floral arrangement is designed with intention based on the color, shape, and texture of the flowers we use. We love the variation in shape and line that each individual flower stem offers, and leverage those unique qualities in our designs to highlight the natural beauty. We have a maximalist design style. Our arrangements are lush and flower-forward. My corporate background gives me a unique blend of creativity and business savvy as an entrepreneur. Every flower arrangement we design goes through a rigorous creative process before it gets launched to the public; it must meet our standards for quality, design, and the reputation that Fresh Flower Bar has earned for long-lasting beauty. We’ve built our brand so our arrangements are instantly recognizable, distinct from traditional flower shops whose designs can look dated.

Q: WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR WORK?

A: I draw most of my inspiration from color, shape and design that I see in my daily life, whether it is running errands or visiting another country. My work is heavily influenced by nature, visual art and international travel. We are continuously evolving our product line to reflect current inspirations, seasonal trends, and the desires of our customers. Being “cookie cutter” is like a death sentence to me, floral art must evolve and adapt to be stimulating and relevant.

“Getting to know our clients on such a deep level throughout the design process is a joy, and a true honor.”

Q: HOW DO YOU HELP CLIENTS ARTICULATE WHAT THEY WANT WHEN THEY DON’T QUITE HAVE THE WORDS?

A: We know exactly the right questions to ask and we are great listeners. Describing flowers isn’t something people do every day - so we try to learn more about the occasion for the flowers or the essence of the person we’re designing for. Are they lively and spunky? Sophisticated and demure? Are they a free spirit, or do they appreciate something more refined? With descriptors like these, we’re able to intuit that the recipient would love a whimsical arrangement with colorful, but pastel flowers, something with movement and depth, and that is the perfect size for their dining room table!

Q: CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH YOUR DESIGN PROCESS FROM FIRST IDEA TO FINISHED ARRANGEMENT?

A: For wedding and event work, we have an in-depth consultation with our client about their event and aesthetic and put together a mood board and color palette for our team to reference. Our team will then brainstorm the individual flowers to use, ensuring all colors are present, balanced, and cohesive, and that we have an assortment of flower types and shapes for a dynamic composition. Every one of my team members has unique skills and strengths, so different designers take the lead on different events. A lot of the design comes intuitively to us; we often say, “If you’re looking for a florist who just ‘gets it’ - you’ve found one!”

Q: CAN YOU SHARE WHAT ARE SOME EMERGING TRENDS YOU SEE THIS SEASON AND COMING INTO SPRING?

A: For wedding and events specifically, we’re seeing lots of “cloud” and “meadow-like” arrangementscenterpieces without visible vases, garlands and table runners that make guests feel like they’re dining while immersed in nature, even if they’re inside a venue. Our couples are getting adventurous with organic forms, contemporary color blocking, and bold, bright hues aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Q: WHAT FILLS YOU UP?

A: The hands-on process of starting with loose flower stems and creating a floral composition that takes my breath away. Even after almost eight years, I am still in awe of how astounding and perfect flowers are.

There are so many rewarding aspects of owning a successful business that you have built from scratch. I love the feeling of being an entrepreneur and watching my business continue to

grow and to get the awards and recognition that me and my fantastic team have worked so hard to achieve is the icing on the cake.

Lastly, I don’t think people realize how personal flowers are. We get to create beautiful, completely customized floral arrangements for our customers’ most joyous days, and sometimes their saddest days. We have brides that come visit our studio years after their wedding, just to say hello, and celebrate that they’re expecting a new addition to the family, and we also speak with customers who have just lost someone important to them, and just need someone to talk to about their loved one. Getting to know our clients on such a deep level throughout the design process is a joy, and a true honor. Knowing how impactful flowers are, for all of life’s occasions, keeps us very present and grateful.

SIP, SAVOR, FALL IN LOVE

February is the perfect month to slow down and make a night of it, whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day, planning a cozy date night, or just looking for an excuse to dress up and try something new. Fairfield has become our happy place for cocktails: elevated bars, warm hospitality, and drinks that feel personal, memorable, and worth talking about the next day. Below are nine favorites we keep coming back to, each one tied to a venue we love, a specific pour we crave, and a small detail that makes the experience feel like Fairfield at its best.

9 Cocktails We’re Crushing on This Valentine’s Season in Fairfield

MALIBU TACO

Malibu Marg

Bright, punchy, and perfectly balanced, the Malibu Marg is our favorite margarita - period. It’s the drink we order when we want something refreshing that still has real tequila backbone (tequila, Combier, lime, agave), and Malibu Taco nails it every time. The vibe here is casual, fun, and reliably buzzy, which is exactly why it’s one of our most repeated Fairfield stops. And our favorite winter move is requesting that corner table that lets us sit close and settle in - ideal for sharing plates and lingering longer than planned. Between the cocktail consistency and the energy in the room, this one never disappoints.

malibutaco.com | 1177 Post Rd

J.B. PERCIVAL

Espresso Martini

We’re very particular about espresso martinis (one of Greg’s specialties at home), and this one is our favorite in town. It’s smooth, balanced, and properly shaken, coffee-forward without getting overly sweet, with vodka, espresso, and cacao bitters bringing a rich, clean finish. J.B. Percival also feels like a true hidden gem: a little harder to find, but absolutely worth it once you’re in. This lounge is our go-to “one more cocktail” spot after dinner, especially when we want something polished but still relaxed. If you love a classic done with precision, this is the one to seek out.

jbpercival.com | 63 Unquowa Rd

GERONIMO

Mojito

A mojito is simple in theory, and surprisingly hard to get right, but Geronimo delivers. Fresh, crisp, and refreshing, it’s the kind of cocktail that instantly brightens the night, especially when you’re looking for something clean and lively. Geronimo is also just plain fun: vibrant décor, great energy, and a scene that always feels like you’re stepping into a mini escape. This is a drink we love ordering when we want something easy to sip while sharing a meal and soaking in the atmosphere. Classic, upbeat, and consistently satisfying.

geronimobarandgrill.com | 2070 Post Rd

JOYLARK

Spiked Apple Pie Smoothie

This one is basically an “adult shake,” and it’s as fun as it sounds. The Spiked Apple Pie Smoothie is cozy, playful, and perfect for winter - dessert-like without feeling heavy, and memorable from the first sip. Joylark is also beautifully decorated, and the food and drink menus always give us something new to try, which is a big reason we keep coming back. If you want a Valentine’s-season drink that feels festive, unexpected, and conversation-starting, this is it.

joylarkkitchen.com | 260 Post Rd

ESH

Tokyo Drift

Tokyo Drift is Esh’s creative take on an Old Fashioned and one of those cocktails that makes you pause and go, “Okay…this is really good.” It’s creative, distinctive, and exactly what we look for when we want something beyond the usual order - while still feeling balanced and intentional. Esh is also a place that consistently puts interesting spins on traditional favorites, which makes the cocktail menu feel like part of the experience, not an afterthought. This is the kind of drink we recommend when you want to try something memorable and walk out already planning what you’ll order next time.

eshrestaurant.com | 1401 Kings Hwy

RYEBIRD

Heart in the Cage

Ryebird has that effortlessly cool local energy - great for date night, but just as good for a casual stop when you want a drink that feels thoughtful. Heart in the Cage is a standout: flavorful, well-composed, and the kind of cocktail that feels like it belongs to the room you’re in. In winter, the igloo dining makes the whole experience feel extra special and cozy. And one of our favorite little details? The vinyl record player behind the bar - small, unexpected, and exactly the kind of vibe-setting touch that makes us stay for “just one more.”

ryebird.com | 11 Unquowa Rd

THE SINCLAIR

Sinclair Martini

The Sinclair Martini is a favorite when we’re in the mood for a classic dirty martini - crisp, confident, and undeniably “night out.” The Sinclair has a lively, stylish atmosphere that makes it easy to turn a simple drink into a full evening, and this martini fits that vibe perfectly. It’s also the sister restaurant to Malibu Taco, so if you love that energy but want a slightly different setting, The Sinclair is a great move. This is one we order when we want to keep it clean, polished, and date-night ready.

thesinclairct.com | 1229 Post Rd

IL PELLICANO

Pellicano Bloody Mary

Il Pellicano’s Bloody Mary is classic, simple, and exceptionally well done - and the secret is the mix. They use Manny’s Ultimate Mix, which brings the perfect balance of savory, spice, and freshness without overpowering the drink. It’s so good that Sherri bought bottles of Manny’s to keep at home for our own Bloody Mary days - because once you’ve had it this way, it’s hard to go back. Add in the great vibe and fantastic brunch, and this becomes an easy Fairfield staple.

ilpellicanofairfield.com | 1460 Post Rd

B.E. CHOCOLAT

BE in Love

For a Valentine’s-season pick that’s cozy and non-alcoholic, BE in Love is exactly the vibe. It’s essentially a rich, indulgent hot chocolate experience - comforting, special, and perfect for winter strolling.

B.E. Chocolat is also a cute Greenfield Hill stop, and we love that it doubles as a place to grab chocolates as a gift (or for yourself - no judgment). This is the “drink” we recommend when you want something warm, sweet, and celebratory - without needing a cocktail glass to feel festive.

MAKE A HANDTIED BOUQUET

Learn Fresh Flower Bar’s signature style at one of their in-studio workshops, where floral design and arranging techniques are taught for all skill levels. Here, they share a foolproof method to create their distinctive hand-tied bouquets and signature color palettes, right at home!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEX TORRES | PARK CITY STUDIOS

HAND-TIED BOUQUET:

01/

After conditioning your flowers (removing thorns, broken petals, or ripped leaves, etc.) lay your first greenery on your workspace, in a slightly fanned-out shape.

02/

Add 3 stems of an additional type of greenery, this helps add fullness and structure to your bouquet.

03/

Lay 3 stems of linear flowers on top of your greenery. Here, we start with 3 stems of Stock.

04/

Next we add 3 stems of Delphinium, for additional height in the bouquet.

05/

Add 3 stems of Spray Rose or Rose to the bouquet by laying them on top of your line flowers.

06/

Now add Wax Flowers or a filler flower, any flower that has a lot of small flowers (Baby’s Breath is another example). Filler flowers are helpful to fill in any spaces between the other flowers to make the bouquet full and lush.

07/

Add 3 stems of your focal flower as a final ingredient. Focal flowers, like Ranunculus, are quite delicate, so we add them last.

08/

Next, slide a piece or two of bouquet wrap, kraft paper, or even a recycled paper grocery bag underneath your bouquet.

09/

Cinch the paper over the stems, below the flowers. This wrapping style keeps the flower petals protected and on display!

10/

Tie a bow with a coordinating ribbon for a breathtaking bouquet!

Learn floral design at Fresh Flower Bar! Upcoming workshops: February 11th and February 25th 7 PM - 8:30 PM
