For more than 120 years, our greatest gift has been the relationships we share with customers like you. Warm wishes for a joyful holiday season and a successful year ahead. Thank you for your trust and friendship throughout the years.

Happy Holidays!

As the lights begin to glow across Columbia and the season settles in, we’re reminded how grateful we are to live in a place where community truly means something. December here isn’t just busy—it’s full of heart. Full of tradition. Full of moments that bring us closer to the people and places we love.

In this issue, we’re celebrating all the magic that makes the holidays in mid-Missouri feel special—from festive holiday gatherings at The Bistro on The Blufftop to wellness that energizes the season at HOTWORX, to the traditions that return each year and make this time feel like home. The Nutcracker at Jesse Hall, the Magic Tree at The Crossing, Living Windows in The District, and MOSY’s Home for the Holidays performance are part of our city’s holiday rhythm—each a reminder of why December feels like a little sparkle settles into Columbia.

And because gift-giving is better when we shop small and support our neighbors, we’ve curated a Holiday Gift Guide filled with thoughtful, local finds to make the season more personal—and more meaningful.

Our hope is that these pages inspire you to celebrate the season in ways that feel intentional, warm, generous, and very Columbia.

Wishing you joy, peace, and connection wherever this month takes you.

Happy Holidays,

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE: Thoughtful Local Finds

Unique holiday finds from the small businesses we love.

Shopping locally during the holidays is meaningful— it feels more personal, more intentional, and way more fun. Around Columbia, December is filled with those moments — the kind you feel when you walk into a small business, are greeted by name, discover something you’ve never seen before, and know you’re supporting a real person, not a warehouse. The search becomes part of the memory — coffee in hand, bouncing between boutiques, finding pieces that feel personal and thoughtful versus rushed and generic.

This season, make it fun. Make it intentional.

Whether you’re shopping for someone who loves timeless jewelry, a foodie with a sweet tooth, the friend who’s impossible to shop for, or the person who prefers gifts that feel more experiential than material — there’s something here for every type of holiday personality. From heirloom-worthy sparkle and classic European holiday craftsmanship… to small-batch sweet treats, customizable fragrances, Mahjong girl nights, and beautifully curated boutique finds — these gifts are the kind that surprise people, not the kind that get returned or forgotten.

Book a Saturday shopping day with friends. Build in a coffee stop, a late brunch, or a holiday cocktail downtown. Visit places you’ve never walked into before. Let the fun of the hunt actually be part of the tradition this year. Because the best gifts aren’t random — they’re thoughtful, intentional, and often found by wandering just a little longer or turning into a shop you normally drive by without stopping.

Here in Columbia, we’re lucky — we have so many small businesses that pour heart into what they offer. And when you shop local, you’re not only giving someone a gift they’ll love… you’re also giving back to a community you love.

These are a few of our favorite local finds this season — discovered right here, close to home.

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, cream, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Whisk until smooth and heated through. Taste and adjust sweetness or strength to your liking. Top with marshmallows. Add whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg, and shaved chocolate.

Optional: Add a pinch of cinnamon and cayenne for spicy depth.

Kid-friendly version: Omit bourbon and add peppermint extract or caramel syrup instead.

December in Columbia always brings a certain energy. The city feels brighter and more alive—and that’s what makes this time of year so special here. From performances and live music to lights, tradition, and community moments worth bundling up for, there’s no shortage of festive things to do around mid-Missouri. These are a few holiday events worth adding to your list this season.

EXPLORE THE MOST MAGICAL HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS ACROSS COLUMBIA THIS DECEMBER — FROM MEMORABLE PERFORMANCES TO BELOVED LOCAL TRADITIONS

NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet

There are holiday classics—and then there are holiday moments that feel cinematic. NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet is one of those traditions that families treasure year after year. Returning to Jesse Auditorium at the University of Missouri on Tuesday, December 10th at 7 p.m., this touring production brings world-renowned principal dancers, breathtaking sets, and imaginative theatrical elements that feel larger than life. Think 40 Vaganovatrained ballerinas, hand-painted backdrops, and whimsical puppetry that transforms the stage into pure Christmas wonder.

For more than 30 years, NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet has traveled to over 100 cities, captivating audiences with a fusion of classical ballet, acrobatics, and enchanting storytelling. Critics across the country have praised the show’s artistry and visual spectacle—but experiencing it live, in Columbia, makes it feel even more extraordinary. It’s a cultural moment that arrives just once each holiday season—and it belongs on the calendar next to tree lightings, hot cocoa, and gifting traditions.

Whether it’s your very first Nutcracker or a return to a tradition you’ve loved since childhood, this is the type of holiday magic worth dressing up for. One night only—one unforgettable December evening— right here at home.

The Magic Tree at The Crossing

The Magic Tree at The Crossing has become one of Columbia’s most recognizable holiday sights— now in its ninth year — a glowing landmark people look forward to all season long.

Standing 85 feet tall and wrapped in more than eight miles of LED lights, this massive sycamore transforms the church lawn into something almost cinematic — bright, colorful, and impossible to miss. The official tree lighting takes place Saturday, November 30th at 5:30 p.m. Bring your own chairs or blanket and gather with family and friends to enjoy the show — along with free kettle corn, hot chocolate, and Christmas music. Beginning that evening, the Magic Tree is lit from 5–10 p.m. every night throughout the season — free and open to everyone.

People drive from across mid-Missouri just to stand underneath it… to take photos… to slow down in the middle of the busiest month of the year. Some holiday magic doesn’t need explanation — it just needs light, shared moments, and a reason to look up.

Living Windows in The District

If you’ve ever wondered what downtown Columbia looks like at its most festive — it’s Living Windows. For more than 20 years, this free family tradition has brought The District to life in the most charming way — with downtown shops transforming their storefronts into live scenes, characters, mini shows, and holiday moments you can walk right up to and experience. Every single year looks different, and that’s part of the fun. You never really know what you’re going to see — and that’s why people keep coming back.

Thousands of locals and visitors fill the sidewalks… popping into shops, grabbing cocoa, and wandering block by block to see what windows will surprise them next. The whole night feels nostalgic, creative, and very Columbia. It’s the perfect excuse to make a full day of it — grab lunch or dinner beforehand, shop small, pick up gifts, and then stay for the windows once they light up.

Living Windows takes place Friday, December 5th from 6–8 p.m. in Downtown Columbia — and it’s completely free. Arrive early and park in a garage. And this year, don’t forget to look for the judges on the light-up golf cart — plus roasted chestnuts inside the Wishflour Courtyard… a little holiday secret regulars always know about.

MOSY: Home for the PerformanceHolidays

There’s a certain holiday feeling you only get inside a theatre — the hush before the music begins, the warmth of the crowd settling in, and that moment the first notes fill the room. Home for the Holidays is Columbia’s annual symphonic celebration of the season, bringing The Missouri Symphony and Columbia Chorale together inside the historic Missouri Theatre. It’s one of the most timeless and elegant ways to experience December in mid-Missouri — where holiday nostalgia and live performance meet.

This year’s concert draws inspiration from mid-century holiday classics — smooth jazz, cozy harmonies, post-war pop, early rock influences, and festive favorites arranged for full symphony and choir. Guests can expect familiar songs they love, reimagined with rich orchestral sound, plus fresh surprises that make the performance feel new each year. A holiday market and a special visit from Santa make this performance more than a concert — it’s a full afternoon experience.

Home for the Holidays takes place Sunday, December 14, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Missouri Theatre. Tickets range from $29–$39, with free admission for children under 17 with an adult ticket. It’s one of the most beautiful ways to support local arts this season — and a holiday tradition worth dressing up for.

ELEVATEYOUR FITNESSRITUAL

HOTWORX brings an elevated, science-forward approach to fitness— pairing infrared heat, intentional movement, and time-efficient sessions designed to help members feel stronger, recover faster, and train smarter. What began as a personal wellness transformation for Vickie quickly evolved into a mission to make this experience accessible to others. She describes bringing HOTWORX here as “one of the most rewarding decisions” she and her husband have made.

With 24/7 access, members can schedule their workouts whenever wellness fits—before work, after class, or between holiday events when life gets busy. And because sessions are just 15 or 30 minutes, consistency becomes achievable rather than overwhelming.

At HOTWORX, fitness becomes an elevated ritual—one rooted in strength, science, mindfulness, and sustainable results rather than short-lived seasonal motivation.

Infrared training designed for busy, everyday lifestyles— making strength, recovery, and wellness more accessible, efficient, and realistic for real life schedules.
ARTICLE BY SHEA SULLIVAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH JANE PHOTOGRAPHY

HOTWORX stands apart in today’s fitness landscape thanks to its 3D Training method—an innovative blend of heat, infrared energy, and guided exercise inside an infrared sauna. The result is a workout experience that maximizes calorie burn, boosts recovery, enhances muscle activation, and supports overall wellness in less time. It’s efficiency without compromise—designed for people who want results, but also want a life outside the gym.

Members can choose from a lineup of virtual workouts available around the clock, including mindful, low-impact sessions like Hot Yoga, Pilates, and Barre, along with faster paced HIIT options like Hot Cycle and Hot Thunder. This model creates space for every fitness level to find their own lane. As Vickie says, the studio is built to serve those seeking both “flexibility and measurable progress” in their wellness journey.

The infrared environment elevates the entire experience. Improved circulation and enhanced detoxification are combined with mood-boosting endorphin release—giving members not only strength gains and performance benefit, but a mental reset that feels grounding during a season that can easily become overwhelming. The holidays often pull focus away from routine, but HOTWORX offers a path back to consistency that feels both doable and aligned with real life.

This winter, prospective clients are invited to enjoy a complimentary VIP session to experience the infrared difference firsthand. Those who mention the City Lifestyle partnership when they join will also receive a free month of membership through the end of Q1 2026—a warm, low-pressure invitation to step into something new.

If you’ve been wanting to elevate your fitness routine, reconnect with your body, and build healthier patterns that extend well past the holiday season, this is the sign to begin.
