Over the course of his real estate sales and development career, Gary Crowe developed a specific interest in midcentury-style homes. One home on Colyar Drive caught his attention years ago and when he found the home was up for sale, he could hardly contain his excitement.
“There are 7 homes on this cul-de-sac and about 95% of them are this mid-century style from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s,” shares Gary. “I love all of them, but I’ve always been drawn to this particular house. I knew as soon as it hit the market, and we bought it immediately.”
Purchasing the house was the first step in an almost yearlong process that Gary and his wife, real estate agent and interior designer Jennifer Crowe, undertook to breathe life back into the home. They named the home Bossa , a nod to the retro vibe of Bossa Nova music which reflects the feel they wanted to give the home.
“To get inspiration, Jennifer and I took a trip to Palm Springs, California,” says Gary. “We specifically went there for the mid-century design because that area is where you find the heart of mid-century. Frank Sinatra had a home there and we visited the home, did a bunch of tours and driving around, and really got inspired.”
The renovation centered on elevating the period’s distinctive style with custom design elements and updated amenities. “We really tried to take cues from the original design choices to honor its roots but make it more stylistic and intentional,” explains Jennifer. “We wanted to pay homage to the original design yet updating it to today’s living standards of what people would currently find attractive.”
Exterior upgrades included adding large windows across the front of the house to open access to the stunning views of Lookout Mountain. The installation of a white pool and
spacious outdoor living space in back, as well as custom lighting sourced directly from Palm Springs, add to the midcentury ambiance.
Accentuated by clean lines and pops of bold color, the interior is full of mid-century touches such as terrazzo flooring and shag carpet. The couple also worked with Set in Stone to create several custom metal work pieces including the railing for the cantilevered balcony off the living room and floating stairs with a metal screen wall in the foyer.
“The design of the windows and metal work give off such cool retro vibes and are part of the unique touch that screams 1960s,” says Jennifer. “We tried our best to make this home a jewel and an icon on the street that fits in with the with the rest of the mid-century homes there.”

GETTING TO KNOW INTERIOR DESIGNER BRANDON HOOD
Each day, interior designer Brandon Hood gets to live out his passion for creating beautiful spaces. He recently took time to give us a glimpse of what he loves about interior design, a recent project, and why he enjoys calling Chattanooga home.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?
I’ve always had a passion for interior design, creating, and building things, but I didn’t go straight into interior design. I got my associate’s degree in design and drafting from Chattanooga State and then went to UTC and got my bachelor’s degree in construction management. After college, I went to work at a design firm and then decided to branch out on my own and opened Hood Design Interiors at the beginning of 2024.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
I love helping my clients fall in love with their spaces. I meet new people all the time and each client brings a different challenge. In most cases, something may not be working for them, whether that be their furniture layout or they may not love something about a particular room in their home. I enjoy collaborating with them and helping them love their space again.
WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE?
I am a full-service interior designer. I can assist someone who is building a custom or spec home, renovating their current home, as well as help with custom furniture selections, space planning, flooring selections, and home décor. I can also assist with interior finish selections, such as paint, wallpaper, tile, hardware, lighting, and more.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN STYLE?
I would say I lean more towards a transitional vibe, which is a combination of traditional and modern elements. I love mixing old and new pieces to create a clean and timeless aesthetic, while maintaining a homey feel. However, since each individual and project is unique, I am often inspired by the client, the story of their space, and their unique tastes.
ARE YOU WORKING ON ANY PARTICULARLY FUN PROJECTS RIGHT NOW?
I’m very excited about a renovation I’m working on in the southside of Chattanooga. It is a 100-year-old home that we have taken down to the studs and are fully reconfiguring the layout. We are also adding a second-floor addition to the home, as well as a pool and a carriage house in the backyard. There are a lot of custom details going into the home, such as fluted edging on the bathroom vanity and on the kitchen island, a marble fireplace, and arched built-ins. We are also restoring the original floors. The owners have a unique style and a vibe that I really enjoy, and this project is a designer’s dream - I’m very excited to see the finished product!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT CHATTANOOGA?
Chattanooga has the perfect combination of city life and nature. I live about five minutes from downtown and can be at my favorite restaurants or coffee shops in minutes, but I can also walk right out my front door and be on a trail surrounded by overlooks or waterfalls in just a short drive. In addition, I love the community that we have in Chattanooga. As a small business owner who just started out last year, I have been able to make countless connections with many other business owners and the broader Chattanooga community, and everyone has been so supportive. I love supporting them as well, and I do not believe that is something larger cities do as well as us.
I love helping my clients fall in love with their spaces. I enjoy collaborating with them and helping them love their space again.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN CHATTANOOGA?
It’s currently closed for renovations, but my favorite thing to do is to walk the Walnut Street Bridge and get ice cream at the Ice Cream Show. I have a major sweet tooth, so I always get vanilla frozen yogurt mixed with brownies, caramel, and Nutella. I also love catching up with friends at The Greenhouse, Bitter Alibi, Outpost, and Il Primo, as well as shopping at some of our local boutiques.

Pedestrian Wine & Cheese
Northshore’s Newest Spot Brings the Community Together Through Intentionally Curated Wine, Cheese, and Provisions
Philadelphia native Bill Reed and his wife landed in Chattanooga almost by accident.
After a successful 20-year career in New York’s food and beverage world, the Reeds moved to Florida in 2020 for a change of pace. A few years later, they set their sights on Nashville as a potential next chapter. During the drive north, they made a stop in Chattanooga, and never made it any farther.
Something about the city clicked. It felt like home, and the decision to put down roots came quickly.
Not long after settling in, Reed felt the familiar pull of entrepreneurship. He spotted a “for rent” sign in a Northshore storefront in January; within days, he’d signed a lease and drafted a business plan. By June, Pedestrian Wine & Cheese was open to the public—ready to serve the neighborhood with thoughtful selections of wine, cheese, and provisions.
Pedestrian Wine & Cheese is the first liquor store in Tennessee licensed to sell housemade cheese, thanks to a unique agricultural permit Reed secured during the planning process. A trained cheesemaker—he learned the craft while living in New York—Reed offers his homemade ricotta and creamy stracciatella directly in the shop. Pedestrian also features a curated selection of cheeses and charcuterie from Tennessee and Georgia dairies, as well as distinctive imports from Europe.

The wine selection leans toward natural wines sourced worldwide. Bottles are arranged by style, from light-bodied to full-bodied, making it easier for guests to navigate by taste. While customer favorites have already emerged, inventory rotates regularly to keep things fresh and encourage exploration. The shop also carries craft beer and non-alcoholic options. From Thursday to Sunday, guests can grab a “Park Pack” mini charcuterie board and enjoy it wherever the day takes them.
For Reed, pairing isn’t about following rigid rules; it’s about exploring what works for your palate. He and his team focus on the flavor profiles of each cheese and wine, selecting combinations that highlight and balance one another. Creamy cheeses like brie shine alongside smooth, fruity Chardonnays. Bold bleu cheeses are surprisingly harmonious with sweet dessert wines like port. Hard cheeses like aged gouda often find their match in tannin-rich reds. Sometimes the team pairs by region, since wines and cheeses from
the same place often share complementary characteristics. But customer preference always takes priority. “It’s about opening the door to experiment, not following a formula,” Reed says.
From the beginning, Pedestrian has been a community effort. Reed is quick to credit the team and the broader Chattanooga community for bringing the shop to life. Regulars already stop in to pick up their favorites or ask for recommendations for special occasions. “It’s very humbling to know that we’re being trusted and asked what to bring to people’s celebrations,” Reed says. With a team that’s fully bought in and a community that keeps showing up, he adds, “I feel like we already won.”
Pedestrian’s wine club has already attracted more than 60 members in its first month. Each subscription comes with a thoughtfully curated bag that includes exclusive wines not sold in the shop, with perfectly paired provisions. Members are invited to in-house tasting events, where they can sample the wines, learn about each bottle, and connect with fellow wine lovers. These gatherings are educational and social; customers turn into friends, and the shop becomes a space for community and discovery.
Catch the Pedestrian team this October at Wine Over Water in Renaissance Park, where they’ll be pouring natural wines and offering cheese samples for attendees to enjoy. It’s another chance to experience their thoughtful, community-driven approach—this time, with a view.

MORE THAN JUST CANDLES
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL
FORGET ME NOT CANDLES OWNER GABRIELLE MARCHETTI NURTURES A POSITIVE, HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT—IN HER LIFE, AMONG HER TEAM, AND IN EVERY CANDLE SHE CREATES
At age ten, Gabrielle Marchetti got a craft kit for her birthday to make candles. Back then, she had no way of knowing that years later, she would be running a successful business in Chattanooga that sells candles locally and all over the country.
In 2019, Gabrielle founded Forget Me Not Candles with a passion to bring aesthetically pleasing, nontoxic, clean burning candles to the home accessories industry. In the process, she has taken scented candles, something found in most homes, and intentionally worked to make them as beautiful, functional, and healthy as possible.
“It is really important to have clean ingredients in your home because toxic ingredients chip away at your health without you realizing it,” explains Gabrielle. “Ingredients make a difference in long-term health effects and immediate effects, and with cleaner candles, you address both of those things. We are one of the only companies that produce 100% soy candles that don’t trigger allergies or have allergens. They also don’t have any endocrine or hormone disruptors, and they are all vetted to make sure that they are headache free.”
Gabrielle has also been very intentional in her approach to candle scents, which are available in 25 to 30 different fragrances at a time. The objective is to make all the scents pleasing to a large range of people without being overpowering. “The candle scents are designed to be universal enough to be giftable,” she shares. “The ultimate goal is for people to have selections and for them to love them all so much, they don’t know which one to choose. I think we’ve achieved that goal!” Gabrielle’s personal favorite scent is cozy cashmere, which has been the top-selling scent over the last year.
The hand-poured candles burn evenly for up to 180 hours, allowing consumers to get the maximum benefit from each candle, and they are tastefully designed to seamlessly compliment any home décor. “I know there are people out there like me who have not purchased something for the sole reason that it just would not look good in their home,” she shares. “They really care about how things look, and they want to curate the appearance and feel of their home. We’ve designed our candles so that whether they’re trying to complement their home decor or wanting to elevate an area in their home, our candles work for both.”
Over the last six years, the company has expanded to include a large on-line customer base and in addition to being sold in the Chattanooga shop, the candles are now sold in 150 retailers across the United States. Forget Me Not Candles has also grown from a one-woman solo venture into a thriving team of seven women.
“We have built a team intentionally and with so much care… everyone works together so well,” says Gabrielle. “When it’s the right personalities and you have the right intention and pillars behind what you’re doing, you can do anything.”
In addition to believing in the quality and purpose of her products, Gabrielle has an entrepreneurial spirit and really enjoys the different aspects and challenges of running a business. “I’ve always been obsessed with marketing and design, so I’ve poured a lot of that into the business,” she says. “I also love the autonomy that owning a business brings and being able to consistently innovate and make improvements. If something bad happens, it’s on me, but if something good happens, it’s on me too.”
An Atlanta native, Gabrielle moved to Chattanooga eight years ago. She embraces all that the area has to offer and admits that there is still so much exploring to do in the future.
“It’s such a beautiful city and leaves a lot of room for inspiration, but my favorite thing about Chattanooga is the convenience of the city blended with nature,” she explains. “It’s so nice to be able to take my son bike riding or paddleboarding on any given day. We have a membership to use the bikes and scooters that are on the streets around town and it’s really nice because we can bike across town in 10 minutes. Paddle boarding has also been so attainable because we can walk right to the river. Sometimes I can’t believe that we live in a place where you vacation in your own town.”
