Refining Your Style

No matter who you are, style plays a pivotal role in each of our lives. Even when you don't think you're making a particularly "fashionable" decision, the clothing we wear, the accessories we choose, and the way we decorate our homes all factor each of our unique styles.

What I love most about style is that it communicates a message about ourselves to others before we even speak a word and we have the ability to control that narrative. When I think about the evolution of my own personal style, I can't help but laugh a little. The clothing I wore in high school, the way I decorated my first apartment, and my style preferences from just five years ago each represent a significant time in my life and the person I was during those unique seasons. When I look back at photos or do some spring cleaning, there are items that make me wonder what in the world I was thinking, while there are other pieces that I cherish and have held on to for what feels like forever.

As I get older, I am finding that I am coming into a more refined sense of style that feels authentic, timeless, and perhaps most importantly to me, comfortable. There is a sense of freedom that has come with this refinement—freedom from falling prey to trends that will come and go, which allows me to choose items that I truly love.

This month, we have the privilege of featuring several local women who each have a unique sense of style. Sarah Brown, Hannah Hammon, Arielle Garcia Hayes, Catherine Sheffield, Allwyn Schmissrauter, and Johnna Grace Tate differ vastly in their tastes, but each understand the importance of defining one's core style. From clothing to home decor, these women are ripe with advice to help you define your style and build a collection that will withstand the test of time.

Also this month, we learn more about La La Designs and get a glimpse into the stunning spaces curated by Autumn Edwards; we visit The Greenhouse in Birchwood a wonderland recently opened by Cindy Franklin; and we give you a quick round up of our favorite local businesses sure to elevate your style.

So as you read this issue, not only do we hope you are inspired by the individuals, businesses, and partners featured, but it is our desire that you'll use this as a springboard, if you haven't already, to begin refining your style.

Cheers!

Beautiful Spaces Curated by Interior Designer Autumn Edwards

“I don’t feel like I chose interior design, I feel like it chose me,” shares Autumn Edwards, interior designer and owner of La La Designs. “I loved being with my kids and taking care of them when they were young, so I figured out how to supplement my income by owning homes and upgrading them. Then, people started asking me questions about colors and what to do with things. Eventually, I had realtors asking me about houses and from there, it morphed into full design.”

Over her twenty years of experience, Edwards has found that her passion lies in remodeling historic homes. “I really like well-built older homes, commercial buildings, and warehouses; the materials just appeal to me,” she said. “I like to work within the time period, or wherever the house is located, and rehab it by taking out walls and restructuring it while not taking away from the history of the house. I also love mixing the old with modern elements; it’s like a puzzle to me. I find these older houses beautiful and hate tearing them down.”

Although her favorite period for homes is the early 1900s, Edwards sees potential in homes of all ages. “There are a lot of houses, especially on Signal, that were built in the 1990s and early 2000s,” she explained. “They aren’t technically considered historical, but they are nice homes, usually made with masonry bricks, and they have great bones but haven’t been updated.”

Edwards uses her experience as an interior designer and as a mom to create holistic longterm plans for homes. “I feel like I have wisdom to offer because I’ve done life with babies and now, I have two in college,” she shared. “So, I know to set the house up, not just for this really crazy phase you’re in with toys and pacifiers everywhere, but thinking long term. I would rather do that upfront than to have homeowners need to come back a few years from now and redo everything.”

Edwards works with homeowners to set up a plan to prioritize projects and implement changes in phases, which is more budget-friendly and less overwhelming for the homeowner. She also enjoys helping homeowners discover how their personalities can be expressed to make their home most enjoyable and relaxing for their families.

“With many of my clients, there are usually gifts, talents, and tendencies that they just don’t know about,” she said. “It’s sort of a process of helping someone to really get it out in their home and create a space that is truly a reflection of them.”

When it comes to style trends, Edwards encourages clients to stick to what they love and approach trends wisely. “I try to stay pretty classic, traditional, and timeless with things in the home that can’t be changed out easily,” she explained. “I have a lot more fun with wallpaper, lighting, hardware, artwork, and rugs and that’s how I add personality to the space.”

Edwards offers several service packages for clients to choose from that include a design only option and a full-service option where she designs the elements and oversees the project from start to finish. She also provides consultations and works with real estate agents in a myriad of ways. in Birchwood The Greenhouse

Nestled deep in rural Birchwood, TN is an enchanting twenty-acre botanical haven where locals can host gatherings straight out of a fantasy. In the center of greenhouse filled with lush plants and surrounded by trees and greenery hangs a stunning crystal chandelier. A long table runs the length of the room and it is set for the tea party you’d only imagined as a child.

This isn’t the set of Alice in Wonderland. This is The Greenhouse in Birchwood. Cindy Franklin, the owner of the venue, says that the vision hit her the first time she walked through the once run-down building. “It was all rusted,” she told us. A former interior designer originally from California, Franklin explained that despite the location’s run-down appearance, she envisioned in vivid detail how beautiful the space could become. So, along with her husband and her daughter, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work. After hand scraping windows, contracting a company to lay new concrete, fixing the siding, and adding a beautiful chandelier, the space really began to come together.

After opening in January, the farm suffered a major setback when a tornado tore through the property. Rather than letting the misfortune hold them back, however, The Greenhouse came back better than ever adding air conditioning and a renovated powder room with plans for a commercial kitchen on the horizon. These new additions allow The Greenhouse to be used year-round—providing an immersive all-inclusive experience.

“We just want people to gather and have an experience they will all remember. When you sit at a long table, it just encourages everyone to talk and visit. We don’t do those kinds of things anymore,” says Cindy.

One of the most magical elements of The Greenhouse is the details. The venue and their staff provide every aspect of each event from decor and place settings to catering. The results are stunning. Guests rave over the seemingly small details and the fine china.

While the venue is very popular with guests of all ages, growing numbers of younger clients are beginning to be drawn into the enchantment of The Greenhouse. “A big thing right now is Sweet Sixteen birthday parties!” says Cindy. “The teen girls just love it—we even had girls come as a group before their prom. It was perfect, they were already all dressed up. They just loved it.”

You can experience the magic of The Greenhouse in Birchwood yourself by booking a party or attending one of their community events. Katie Goodwin, Cindy’s daughter, is one of the coordinators of the venue and also teaches art classes on site. Cindy also plans on hosting etiquette classes for homeschool groups at the space this Fall. With their focus on all-inclusive experiences, bookings at The Greenhouse are also very affordable, which is one reason they’ve also become popular with bridal parties and microweddings, a new trend on the wedding scene.

This secret garden won’t stay hidden forever, so be sure to book your next gathering soon. Find out more about the Greenhouse in Birchwood online at: thegreenhouseinbirchwood.com and on Instagram at: @thegreenhouseinbirchwood.

JOHNNA GRACE TATE HOMEMAKER

Having a personal style is so important. You can always go back to your roots. But I’m always willing to experiment and try new trends as they happen. That’s what makes fashion so fun! I love color which is also reflected in my home design. I am not a neutral girl although I appreciate those tones. Give me all the fun color, textures and designs.

I went through a decade slump while having children where I didn’t prioritize my style. My two fashion forward friends are who I always go to for advice, Amanda Jackson and Nicole Watson.

Looking and feeling your best is empowering. Taking the time to look good for you and no one else will change your whole mindset on style and fashion. I love high end pieces but mixing them with affordable ones is definitely the trick. I love shopping my basics and shoes at more affordable prices. I’m also a jewelry girl. In my photos, I’m wearing Paper Annie’s earrings which are so fun and affordable.

I am always looking for a new, fun dress to add to my collection. Also a fun top paired with a basic jean is my go to everyday look so I’m always looking for that, too.

My style is a true reflection of my confident and adventurous personality, with bold colors and statement pieces that speak volumes. I’m a mood dresser, so each day’s outfit reflects what I’m feeling and loving at that moment. I love experimenting with mixing different styles and influences. Many of my pieces carry personal stories or sentimental value, adding extra joy and making each look uniquely mine.

My approach to creating a fun and stylish look involves investing in standout statement pieces that can be easily paired with trendy, affordable finds.  I elevate budget-friendly outfits with high-end accessories like bags and shoes and enjoy experimenting with layering to create a balanced, effortless style. The ultimate secret is to wear what you love with confidence—when you feel beautiful, your look will always shine, no matter the price tag.

As I have grown and evolved, so has my style, aligning more closely with my personality and values. My wardrobe is as loud, energetic, and bright as I am!  My love of traveling has exposed me to diverse cultures and their dazzling fashion, continuously sparking fresh inspiration. I’m easily influenced by the latest trends and fashion influencers—after all, we’re all part of a stylish world. My unique sense of style has been shaped by a blend of my Puerto Rican heritage, my upbringing in Atlanta during the ‘90s, and my parents’ encouragement to be a free spirit. Growing up, I was immersed in the vibrant colors and patterns of Puerto Rican culture, which taught me to appreciate bold and expressive fashion. At the same time, being raised in Atlanta in the ‘90s exposed me to a dynamic mix of trends and street style, from the grunge movement to hip-hop influences. My parents’ support and the rich cultural backdrop of my upbringing have been pivotal in shaping my fashion choices.

My style is like a joyful celebration of who I am! It’s all about blending fun, vibrant pieces that match my upbeat personality with a touch of sophistication. I love incorporating colors and patterns that make me feel lively and confident. My wardrobe also reflects my commitment to supporting the art of professionalism, in and out of the workplace.

I enjoy pushing professional boundaries while also showcasing my love for a well put together suit, stalking, and heel. Each outfit is a cheerful statement of my personality and showcase of confidence that I want people to not only notice but feel lifted by it somehow as well. I love building confidence in others, whether it’s through a conversation starter piece or through a mentoring conversation on ‘how to dress to impress at work.’

SARAH BROWN  HOMEMAKER

Beauty is something I try to give myself everyday, in the form of comfort from my home and self love from my wardrobe. But it’s all so much bigger than clothes, furniture, décor, and the physical representation.  Our style here is shown in the way we host as an ever-revolving open door to friends and strangers. It’s in the way we teach our children to be welcoming and loving.  I hope to be a safe space for everyone to feel comfortable, listened to, (usually fed) and encouraged to just trust in being exactly who they are. I grew up in a family of women who made a lot of our own clothes, upholstery, and curtains. They refinished our family’s antique furniture and worked with what little we had. What we did have was creativity and a sense of maintaining the old. I went on to work in the fashion industry for many years, and was humbled to have world-renowned designer mentors that taught me to just have faith in my own unique viewpoint, because that’s the root of true style. Through leaning into that guidance I’ve experienced so much freedom and happiness with my style expression.

Between clothing and home décor I’m mostly focused on any additional special pieces to pass down to my children.  My daughter is of the age where she’s obsessed with my closet, and my son loves that everything in our house has a story. When we find something that represents a shared memory together as a family, we’ll go for it and find space.

I INHERITED A LOVE OF ANTIQUING AND MIXING MY FINDS WITH MODERN PIECES.

FMLA manager at Unum, Catherine’s sense of style can be best described as southern classic with a modern twist. We had a chance to learn more about Catherine’s inspiration and familial influences during our interview.

IN A WORLD OF FAST STYLE TRENDS, HOW DO YOU STAY TRUE TO YOUR PERSONAL STYLE WHILE STAYING FRESH AND CURRENT?

Some clothes I’ve had for years and still love and wear. I keep them current by adding accessories such as scarves, shoes and jewelry. For my home, I love family heirlooms. I am fortunate that my family for generations has treasured and passed down timeless pieces.  I have many things in my home that belonged to my great-grandmother who also inherited them. My home stays fresh by switching out pillows, lamps, frames, vases and art. My husband was an art major and his influences and pieces are evident

suits from 38 years ago. They all add a creative, loving and meaningful touch to the nursery.

STYLE IS OFTEN SEEN AS A FORM OF SELF-EXPRESSION. HOW DOES YOUR STYLE REFLECT YOUR PERSONALITY AND VALUES?

I want to feel happy, relaxed and comfortable. I love expressing myself through fun dresses, ruffles and layers. Happy, relaxed and comfortable are also how I want people to feel when visiting my home.  It is intentional that the rooms throughout my home are both warm and welcoming.

HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR UNIQUE SENSE OF STYLE? WERE THERE ANY PARTICULAR INFLUENCES OR EXPERIENCES THAT SHAPED YOUR STYLE CHOICES?

I take inspiration from the generations of strong women in my family who have always appreciated good style.

CONTINUED >

I come from a family where three generations were all women. These women have all furnished their homes with pieces passed down by their families.  So many come with stories. For example, I have my aunt’s pictures in my guest bedroom. She traveled to Panama as a member of a U.S. travel delegation. In recognition of the ongoing travel relations between the two countries, Panama presented her with the artwork as a token of appreciation. She gave them to me when I was rummaging through her house looking for stuff.  My family members frequently “shop” through each other’s homes. I plan to pass these and many more pieces and stories down to our son when he grows up and gets a place of his own.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH MIXING

HIGH-END PIECES WITH MORE AFFORDABLE FINDS? ANY TIPS FOR ACHIEVING A BALANCED AND STYLISH LOOK ON ANY BUDGET?

Yard sales, estate sales, and antique malls are great places to find wonderful things at affordable prices. I love spending my Saturday mornings grabbing a latte and roaming the neighborhoods looking for unique finds. My grandmother and great-grandmother both had antique shops they enjoyed during their spare time. My mother, in her spare time, created “The Merry Market”, an event filled with artists, potters and designers throughout Middle Tennessee. So, you could say I inherited a love of antiquing and mixing my finds with modern pieces.

I WANT TO FEEL HAPPY, RELAXED AND COMFORTABLE.

STYLE CAN BE EMPOWERING. HOW DOES YOUR STYLE EMPOWER YOU, AND HOW DO YOU HOPE IT INSPIRES OTHERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY?

I try to wear things that make me feel positive and confident.  If you feel it, others will feel it, right?  I truly believe empowerment can happen regardless of size and trust my choice of clothing reflects this.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING NEW PIECES TO ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION?

Versatile pieces so you can always change things up. When I make a purchase, I make sure it is a conscious one. Impulse shopping almost never ends well for me.

WHAT ARE SOME SHARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? ANY LOCAL HIDDEN GEMS YOU CAN SHARE WITH OUR READERS?

I adore items at Sophie’s Shop, Cochran Furniture and Charlotte’s Web. For clothes, I love stopping by Belle Rive, Savannah Taylor, and North Star Boutique. They have the sweetest employees who have always welcomed me with a warm smile! Other, bigger places I love to shop include: Belk, Loft, Target, and Grand Millenial Buy, Sell, Trade on Facebook.

Allwyn Schmissrauter

THE IMPORTANCE OF CONFIDENCE, AUTHENTICITY, COMFORT & VERSATILITY

Born in an ambulance on the Olgiati Bridge and raised on Signal Mountain, Allwyn Schmissrauter's style is timeless and breathtaking. We had the privilege of learning more about Allwyn, a wife, new mother, and manager of IT Transformation at Unum during our interview.

IN A WORLD OF FAST STYLE TRENDS, HOW DO YOU STAY TRUE TO YOUR PERSONAL STYLE WHILE STAYING FRESH AND CURRENT?

Every day we see a new “must have” item on social media, but when we see those items, it’s important to stay true to yourself and understand that you don’t always need the “in” item. It’s important to be able to take items in your closet and style them multiple ways—ways that look fresh and current. Almost everything that goes “out of style” will eventually come back in style, so I try to avoid buying everything ‘new’ that catches my eye. Knowing your core style will ultimately determine if the fast style trend in question will suit your personal style.

STYLE IS OFTEN SEEN AS A FORM OF SELF-EXPRESSION. HOW DOES YOUR STYLE REFLECT YOUR PERSONALITY AND VALUES?

When styling my day to day wear, I normally gravitate towards neutral minimalist options. Minimalist style with nice accessories tend to make me feel my most confident, while also being comfortable. I style my home in the same way. I stick to neutral tones, and minimalist items, while adding interest with the pieces I use to style the furniture. I hope that when people walk into my house they feel a sense of calm and comfort without anything being too overbearing.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH MIXING HIGH-END PIECES WITH MORE AFFORDABLE FINDS? ANY TIPS FOR ACHIEVING A BALANCED AND STYLISH LOOK ON ANY BUDGET?

I’d say my clothing style is quite similar to how I choose to style my home. I like to mix basics with high-end items. With clothing, I like to start an outfit with a simple base, but then add higher-end accessories like jewelry, shoes or a bag. Similarly, with my home, I like to find affordable antique furniture as the base for a room then spend on higher-end items to style the pieces. I think it’s important to understand that not everything you own has to be expensive. You can very well achieve an amazing look while wearing an expensive gown with gold hoops from Amazon. I’d recommend deciding what you value most in your style and spending your money there.

STYLE CAN BE EMPOWERING. HOW DOES YOUR STYLE EMPOWER YOU, AND HOW DO YOU HOPE IT INSPIRES OTHERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY?

Confidence, authenticity, comfort and versatility are four ways that my style empowers me. Feeling confident in clothes that fit well and resonate with my personal taste empowers me to be my best self. Choosing outfits that reflect my authentic self empowers me to stay true to myself. Prioritizing comfort helps me feel at ease and stress-free. Versatility allows me to adapt to various roles and occasions effortlessly which empowers me to always feel prepared. These four things are possible for everyone in the community and I hope it empowers everyone to reach their full potential. Similarly, I hope that showing how I style my home empowers others to style their home in a way that makes them happy as well. There is nothing better than coming home to something you are proud of.

Will the piece last longer than one season and still be in style? As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that this question is probably the most important to me.
Confidence, authenticity, comfort and versatility are four ways that my style empowers me. Feeling confident in clothes that fit well and resonate with my personal taste empowers me to be my best self.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING NEW PIECES TO ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION?

Will the piece last longer than one season and still be in style? As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that this question is probably the most important to me. I no longer choose to invest in pieces that don’t meet those two criteria. It is not practical to constantly replace items, so I try to focus on building a collection that is timeless and high-quality along with adding items that can compliment something I already have in my closet.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL PLACES TO SHOP?

My favorite places to shop for antique furniture are Dirty Jane’s and The Refinery. Both of these stores have such a wide variety of antique items that you’re sure to find something you’ll love. For clothing, Chattanooga Shoe Company is one of my favorites. They have so many different styles that can be worn every day or dressed up for a special occasion.
