Celebrating Connection

Happy February!

There is something quietly powerful about this time of year—a season that invites us to slow down, lean into connection, and notice what truly matters. February holds a gentle kind of warmth, even in the heart of winter, reminding us that love, creativity, and community are always within reach.

This month’s issue celebrates the many ways Chattanooga expresses that spirit. We begin with Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry, where love is transformed into something tangible—rings, pendants, and heirlooms designed to hold meaning long after the moment they’re given. In a world that moves fast, Salma’s reminds us that the most beautiful things are made with care and intention.

That same devotion carries through Lookout Living Realty, where Steve and Alex Dorsa show how partnership extends far beyond business. Their story is about trust, communication, and building a life together—one home, one client, and one shared goal at a time.

Creativity finds its home at Studio Ours, a welcoming space where artists, makers, and dreamers come together to create, teach, and connect. From handcrafted goods to coffee and fresh bread, this studio proves that when creativity is nurtured, community naturally follows.

We also meet Jamie and Brian Bunch of Deal Inked, who are reshaping the car-buying experience with honesty, transparency, and heart. Their story is a reminder that when people lead with integrity, even the most intimidating processes can feel supportive and human.

February wouldn’t be complete without celebrating time well spent together, and our Local Eats: Date Night guide offers delicious ways to do just that—from cozy coffee crawls to riverfront dinners and music-filled evenings. These moments, big and small, are what turn a simple night out into a lasting memory.

And at the heart of this issue is Lionhearts Fitness, where shell and Luccketta are building something extraordinary—using obstacle course racing to heal, empower, and uplift young people. Their story reminds us that love, when shared generously, has the power to change lives.

As you move through this month, may these pages inspire you to celebrate connection in all its forms. However you choose to mark February, may it be filled with warmth, intention, and moments that truly matter.

Cheers!

From there, stroll to Camila, a modern European bistro and one of the Southside’s newest additions. End with dessert at Clumpies or The Hot Chocolatier—two local institutions located just across from the historic Hotel Chalet, perfect for connecting over ice cream or handcrafted chocolates.

COFFEE CRAWL

Fuel up at Mean Mug, a Main Street staple known for its cozy atmosphere and thoughtful menu. Pair a latte with a towering breakfast biscuit, sip cold brew alongside avocado toast, or opt for tea and a housemade muffin to ease into the day.

At Milk & Honey, seasonal lattes and matcha drinks pair naturally with fresh salads, sandwiches, and their famous buttermilk biscuits. Heartier options like shakshuka make this an ideal mid-day stop. Finish with dinner at Frothy Monkey, housed inside the Hotel Chalet. The café-meets-bistro menu allows you to pair a signature latte or coffee cocktail with your evening meal.

If caffeine after lunch isn’t your thing, most spots offer decaf options so you can enjoy the ritual without the extra jolt.

REFUEL & RELAX

Pair your time outdoors with a well-earned meal, whether you’re hiking, paddling, or simply soaking in the scenery. After exploring Lookout Mountain, head to St. Elmo for a relaxed, food-forward stop. Hummus Bowl offers fresh, nourishing Mediterranean plates.

SALMA'S Diamonds

A FAMILY-BUILT JEWELRY DESTINATION WHERE CUSTOM DESIGN TURNS LIFE’S MOMENTS INTO LASTING BRILLIANCE

In the heart of Hamilton Place Mall, among the bustle of shoppers and the gleam of storefronts, lies a Chattanooga gem that’s as timeless as the memories it helps create - Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry. Known locally for its warm service, high-quality craftsmanship, and dazzling selections, Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry has become a destination for those seeking pieces that capture love, commitment, and special moments worth remembering.

For more than a decade, this jeweler has offered locals and visitors something rare in today’s retail world: personalization and care that go beyond the display case. At Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry, every piece tells a story, whether it’s a classic diamond engagement ring, a custom-designed necklace, or a sparkling pair of earrings.

Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry was built by family. Meet Mohamed and Linda Ahmed - the couple you are likely to see when visiting Salma’s. The Ahmed’s are hands-on in all aspects of the day-to-day operations - custom design, marketing, inventory control, and so much more.

Did we mention family? The Ahmed’s took things a step further and named the business after their daughter, Salma. Salma and her entire family will be proud of the booming business that once started as a high-end kiosk in the mall.

The Ahmed’s have created something truly special in Chattanooga - almost magical.

Massive profits are not at the core of Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry philosophy - but building relationships is. According to Mohamed, “money comes later on.”

What sets Salma’s apart isn’t just the quality of its diamonds and gold -  it’s the thoughtful experience that comes with each purchase. The Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry team blends top-notch craftsmanship with contemporary design, helping clients turn ideas into heirlooms.

Whether you walk in with a vision for a one-of-a-kind engagement ring or simply browse the curated selection of fine jewelry, the staff’s expertise shines. Flexible financing options and customized service makes the investment feel smart and special. From a simple, friendly smile to crafting custom pieces, the staff at Salma’s goes beyond basic - they are simply a cut above.

Salma’s signature offerings are custom jewelry designs. Bring in a sketch, inspiration photo, or even an old heirloom, and the jeweler will collaborate with you to create something entirely new. This service resonates deeply for clients wanting to breathe fresh life into cherished stones -  transforming memories into unique masterpieces.

From engagement rings to one-of-a-kind pendants, the custom design process here is just more : it’s collaborative. Customers work alongside skilled artisans who translate emotion into metal and stone, resulting in pieces that reflect both personal style and sentimental value.

Part of Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry charm lies in how accessible it makes fine jewelry. According to Mohamed, “We have jewelry to fit all budgets.” Competitive pricing lets shoppers enjoy quality selections without the intimidation that sometimes comes with jewelry buying. The atmosphere feels less like a showroom and more like a trusted jeweler in the family. Salma’s is a place where questions are welcomed and guidance is genuine.

As February approaches, Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry becomes more than just a jewelry store -  it transforms into a

Cupid’s workshop, brimming with ideas to express love in unforgettable ways. Valentine’s Day is a time to elevate romance with something that lasts far beyond the holiday’s roses and chocolates. At Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry, Valentine’s shoppers will find an array of heart-themed pendants, diamond earrings that sparkle, and handcrafted rings that symbolize commitment at any stage of a relationship.

Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry can help you pick out a beautiful necklace that whispers “I cherish you,” or a custom pair of earrings designed to match that special person’s style - not just for February 14th, but for anniversaries, birthdays, and every memory in between. For couples ready to take the next step, the store’s expert jewelers can help select or design the perfect engagement ring that will mark one of life’s most cherished moments.

In a world where personalities and tastes are as unique as fingerprints, Salma’s Custom Design Jewelry stands out as a place where quality meets personalization. More than a jewelry store, it’s a partner in life’s most memorable moments - a place where every visit feels significant, every sparkle tells a story, and every treasure is discovered with care.

For those looking to make this Valentine’s Day unforgettable, a trip to visit Mohamed and Lina Ahmed may just be the first step toward a lifetime of brilliance.

“Behind every piece at Salma’s is a family history - ours.”Mohamed Ahmed.

Lookout Living Realty

REALTORS UNINTENTIONALLY BUILD A BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP & STRENGTHEN THEIR MARRIAGE

Steve and Alex Dorsa always knew they were meant to be life partners but business partners were never part of the plan.

Originally from New Orleans, Steve followed his retired parents to the Chattanooga area after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. The Dorsas were familiar with Chattanooga from frequent family vacations and sports tournaments and grew fond of the region, deciding this is where they would eventually settle.

Mother Nature gave Steve’s parents the push to make the move sooner than they planned in 2005. “After Katrina hit, they decided to just go ahead and move then,” Steve, who was in college at this time, said. “I was about four years behind my parents moving up here.”

Chattanooga is also special because it is where Steve met Alex nearly 14 years ago. They have been married for a little over 10 years and are the proud parents of two boys, Wyatt and Emmett, and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their third child and first daughter this winter.

Neither Steve or Alex had plans to pursue a career in real estate. “I moved here after I graduated from architecture school, didn’t really know what to do and kind of fell into real estate,” recalled Steve. He joined a realty team in 2012 and has kept his foot on the gas since, opening his own business, The Lookout Living Team, and receiving his Broker’s License in 2024.

Alex had been in nursing for six years when she began experiencing burnout from working long days and missing out on holidays with the family. When business began taking off for Steve and they started their family, Alex began phasing out of nursing, going from full-time to part-time to eventually retiring altogether.

Initially, “I went down to one day a week,” Alex shared, noting that Steve was getting so busy he needed assistance. “My last day at the hospital was Christmas Eve 2021.” The holiday was their youngest son’s first Christmas and what Steve calls the ‘final straw’ for Alex in deciding to leave nursing.

Four years later, the Dorsas are working full-time together as the husband and wife team behind Lookout Living and couldn’t be happier.

“We work really well together and have our own individual roles on our team,” said Steve. Where he is crunching data and ensuring deadlines are met, Alex is making connections and “bringing people in to work with us.” Planning client parties throughout the year and gifting are her speciality–”I’m the networking, party-planner, love-on-everybody role. I got the good end of the stick,” she joked.

There were some adjustments in the beginning. “It definitely took time to figure out how to do mom life, keep the house running, work and figure out my schedule when nothing was scheduled for me,” she admitted. Now, those initial challenges are far outweighed by what they have gained by working together.

Open communication, “which is so important,” Steve noted, has been instrumental not only for the success of Lookout Living but for the overall health of their marriage.

“It’s made our relationship stronger,” added Alex. “We’re together so much more. I feel very fortunate.”

“We work really well together and have our own individual roles on our team,” said Steve. Where he is crunching data and ensuring deadlines are met, Alex is making connections and “bringing people in to work with us.”

LIONHEARTS FITNESS

TRAINING KIDS TO WIN AS PEOPLE THROUGH FUN-FILLED OBSTACLE COURSE RACING FOUNDED ON HEALING AND COMMUNITY

Around eight years ago, mother-son duo Michele (“shell”) and Luccketta began Spartan racing. Luccketta was 13 years old and grieving his best friend, Jake, who had just died while shell was thick in the battle with stage four liver disease. “I started Spartan racing and doing things to try to stay alive,” she says. “I didn’t know what to do for my son when his whole world collapsed, so I took him to a Spartan race.”

It was at that race that they discovered Luccketta’s talent for obstacle course racing. “He took off,” shell recalls, laughing. “He was really good at what he was doing and met me at the finish line.” When they got in the car after the race, shell remembers Luccketta saying, “Mama, we need this for all kids. Jake might still be alive.”

shell had prior experience in business, so they decided to start an obstacle course racing class in December 2018 for kids of all backgrounds, ages, abilities, and personalities. Their mission then and now is to empower youth and make them better people by giving them an outlet for healing and growth—a safe place to overcome obstacles and face their fears while having fun.

“Before long, we had our own facility donated by the community,” shell says, “and we are now sponsored by all the major race companies. Lionhearts is an official Spartan charity, and we remain totally free and all volunteers. Everything we do is free for the community, provided by the community, to serve the community.”

Participants of Lionhearts do community service once a month. “We give back to the community because the community has so beautifully given

to us,” shell says. Powered by gratitude, they enjoy staying involved in the community and training kids to be the best they can be. “We don’t train the kids to compete,” shell explains. “We train them to help, encourage, mentor, and train each other. We train them to have a good time, not to win races. They train to win as people.”

However, Lionhearts kids are still winning world championships and slaying the podiums. “Our youth of Lionhearts Fitness were the first in the world ever to have a relay team in the obstacle course racing world championships,” shell states, “and we serve thousands of youth worldwide and have over 75 pro athletes.”

Lionhearts continues to grow, having expanded to the point that they’re building a new facility. “The first thing we built was a memorial garden for Jake and all the youth we’ve lost since we started,” shell says. They continue honoring Jake’s memory through yearly celebrations and continuing the mission they’ve had since the beginning to help kids.

They currently offer classes in the afternoons during the school year, teen nights, adult nights, and summer camps. All totally free and made possible because of the generosity of their sponsors and community partners—including organizations like the Chattanooga Track Club, Willow Tree Farms, and other local companies.

For more information about Lionhearts, what they’re doing, and how to support their mission, visit LionheartsFitness.com and check out their social media: @LionheartsFitness on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

Studio Ours

A New Creative Space Showcases Artists While Enabling Them to Teach Their Craft

Studio Ours is a haven for creators, shoppers, and students.

The 2,000 square foot maker space/market in Chattanooga’s Turnbull Building opened in October 2025. It houses a gift shop featuring artist-made goods from nearly 40 local and out-of-town vendors, enabling potential customers to see a creator’s work in person yearround—even if they don’t have a brick-and-mortar store.

A classroom used for teaching crafts, co-working, and even DnD nights is incorporated within the space and the building’s second floor is rented for yoga classes and weddings. This month, it will house Chattanooga’s yearly Galentine’s event – a large vendor market – prominently featuring artists from Studio Ours.

The business is owned by Hixson native Christina Sok, whose family owns the building. A graphic design major at UT-K, Christina started her own design agency before choosing screen printing as her main form of artistic revenue. Christina and another artist, Elizabeth “Lissie” Gaffney, bonded while discussing the challenges of being market vendors and, over a glass of wine, the pair envisioned Studio Ours where creators can sell and teach others their craft.

When asked what she finds most rewarding about the venture, Christina said, “Some people say they have no creative bone in their body, but something draws them to come back here. At the end of the day, that makes it worth it for me.”

“Makers in other spots worry about losing their space in the store if they don’t sell enough. I don’t want them to feel that way at all. Instead, I’ll say, ‘Hey, your items didn’t sell this month. Let me know how I can help you get more sales.’”

Deal Inked

HUSBAND & WIFE TEAM SAYS APPRECIATION AND COMMUNICATION ARE KEY TO WORKING TOGETHER

ARTICLE BY LYNN THORNE

“The best part is being able to work with my best friend,” said Jamie Bunch, half of the husband-and-wife duo that recently launched a car-buying concierge service.

Jamie and her husband, Brian, created Deal Inked last fall due to Brian’s frustration with the traditional car buying process. After 20-plus years of selling cars and working in customer service, he wanted to make the process easier.

“The stigma of going to a car dealership and dealing with salesman – it’s not a great picture for a lot of people,” Jamie said. She’d listened to her husband’s growing frustration for years over how he was directed to approach and sell to customers. She suggested he strike out on his own and sell cars his way.

His way is car buying without high-pressure sales tactics. Through Deal Inked, a customer tells Brian what they need in a vehicle and he does the rest: finds options that match their needs and budget, negotiates the deal on their behalf, handles all paperwork, and delivers the new car directly to them.

Watching her husband’s passion for the business is one of Jamie’s favorite parts of working with her spouse.

“I love to watch him turn this into a good experience for customers. Now, they actually enjoy this buying a car instead of dreading it.”

TAKING THE WHEEL

Brian and Jamie met online in May of 2017 and were married that November. Both had children from previous marriages, and the blended family consists of four kids: 22-year-old Tristan, 21-year-old Jackson, Bronson, who is 19, and a daughter, Ayla, who is 18 (plus two fur babies, golden retrievers Irl and Mason).

From the start, the couple focused on strong communication within their relationship—a trait that now serves them well as they build their business. Another perk of being a husband-and-wife team? Pushing each other past their comfort zones.

“Brian’s really strong at networking and I’m trying to flex that muscle through this adventure. I’m getting out in the community more and finding ways to support others.”

While Brian is the face of Deal Inked, Jamie manages as the company’s operations. She does everything from arranging Brian’s calendar to marketing and managing their banking and social media accounts.

Jamie said she is proud of how much her husband knows about his industry and how naturally he works with clients.

“He just explains things in a way that makes sense and it’s not salesy in any way.”

Brian has a newfound appreciation for his wife’s dedication and willingness to help.

“I’ve always known she was a hard worker, but I’m watching her learn new things that neither of us know anything about and it’s impressive.”

The couple shared their best advice for other couples who are going into business together.

“Figure out when to turn the business off and turn the marriage on,” Jamie said. “You have to be able to separate it as much as possible. Be intentional about your time together.”

Brian’s advice?

“Be patient. Be understanding. And communicate, communicate, communicate.”
