Many Thanks

Welcome to our annual Gratitude edition as a celebration of community, connection and the joy of giving back during this season of thanks.

One thing I’ve learned is how much our mindset can shape the day ahead. If I oversleep, spill my coffee and stub my toe, it’s easy to let the day spiral into “the worst day ever.” But when I approach life with a spirit of gratitude, something shifts — I begin to notice more blessings, more kindness, more moments worth savoring. Gratitude has a way of multiplying itself.

This truth was made real to me recently while walking alongside a dear friend through a health scare. After a routine exam, her doctor found something that required a biopsy. Based on the initial information, there was an 80% chance it was cancer. I remember clinging to the other number and telling her, “You’re the 20%.” And to our immense relief, she was. That experience reminded me once again of the power of perspective and the importance of holding onto hope.

In this edition, you’ll find a caring, remodeling team who makes it their mission each day to make other people's homes safer, including a concerted effort to assist military veterans. There's also an interesting take on how our local business community navigates financial decisions. One person who's appreciative year-round is the artist spotlighted on our cover. Be sure to catch how to prepare ahead of time for hosting a Thanksgiving meal. Also included is the opportunity to nominate someone for City Lifestyle's annual giving initiative.

As you move through this holiday season, I encourage you to pause in the middle of the busyness. Take a deep breath, close your eyes and name three things for which you’re grateful. That simple practice can transform not just your day, but your entire outlook, and carry you through the season with more joy, peace and connection.

Successful White River Cleanup Held

Community residents came together in Carmel and Noblesville with volunteers and staffers of the White River Canoe Company to keep local waterways clean for the environment, wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. The City of Carmel section of the river had 82 volunteers that removed nearly 8 cubic yards of trash and 20 tires. Geologists state The White River was formed by the melting and retreating of Wisconsin-oriented glaciers approximately 17,000 to 20,000 years ago.

Grateful To Keep Others Safer

New Bath Today Pros Help Customers Remodel Bath Spaces, Age In Place While Supporting Community

"I'm personally grateful to go to work every day to help customers stay safer, have peace of mind and remain independent in their own homes," says Frank Watz, consumer finance manager for New Bath Today in Carmel and SageHome corporate.

Due to NBT's focus on making bath spaces safer, he says the company's specialists provide stylish yet functional home modifications, especially for those who want to age-in-place.

"We saw coming out of COVID, how many Baby Boomers had analyzed everything and truly wanted to stay in their homes, with many of them being older houses with tub and shower combos. Just having to lift legs to get into showers can present risks for everyone," Watz says.

NBT design consultants can aid with the full spectrum of bathroom facets or larger renovations: shower replacements; tub to showers; bathtubs; walk-in tubs installations; as well as one-day bath remodel projects. Their options also cover grab bars, in-shower seating and shower caddies.

"We're a Kohler dealer for shower systems, so with us, you’re not just getting a safer bathroom, you’re getting premium bathing solutions that are accessible, modern, elegant and built to last. And ones with a lifetime warranty," adds Watz.

HELPING MILITARY VETERANS GET BENEFITS THEY EARNED

At NBT, Watz says they believe military veterans deserve not just gratitude, but support that truly makes a difference. "We understand navigating the Veteran Affairs system can be challenging, so we developed a department just to assist in this area. Our expert team is here to make it easier for veterans. And it’s more than just bathroom remodeling; it’s about helping veterans live comfortably and safely."

The HISA (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations) grant offers up to $6,800 to help veterans with disabilities modify their homes for better accessibility and mobility. Watz says their team members guide veterans through the walk-in shower HISA grant process every step of the way.

Above: Frank Watz, New Bath Today/Sage consumer finance manager
“We believe community involvement is essential to our identity as a company.”

"With more than 100 successful HISA grant applications in just the last 90 days, our team understands the details. From eligibility questions to tackling VA paperwork, we’re here for our military heroes," Watz states.

SHARED VALUES

In the last five years, from the corporate headquarters in Indianapolis, Watz says he's championed the caring and compassionate aspects of the services that NBT delivers. In that regard, they've handed out to each other awareness cause bracelets etched with the words Caring and Compassion.

"We're optimistic about the reduced number of ambulance calls required due to the updates and enhancements we provide to customers. And I enjoy celebrating those successes with sales colleagues, ensuring that their good work gets recognized," he says.

GIVING BACK THROUGH COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Watz says they strive to foster meaningful community involvement and support nonprofit organizations that uplift those in need. "We volunteer, do fundraising, conduct food drives and adopt families for Christmas gifts, for example."

One of the key organizations that NBT partners with is Meals on Wheels, a vital service that delivers meals to individuals who are unable to prepare food for themselves. NBT contributed $1,500 to the Bingo Bash fundraiser, an event designed to raise funds for meal deliveries. The funds from this event directly support local families who rely on these nutritious meals, helping them maintain their independence and health.

Another impactful partnership that makes NBT staff proud is being a part of Showers of Hope, a nonprofit dedicated to providing essential hygiene services to those in need. NBT donated 200 backpacks filled with shampoo, soap, razors, combs, deodorant, shaving cream, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Showers of Hope also operates mobile shower units that travel to underserved areas.

For those seeking more spa-like experiences within their bathrooms, complimentary quotes and free 3D mockup designs can be requested from New Bath Today consultants.

Business Managers Get Valuable Assistance From First Financial Bank Experts

In Carmel and the surrounding area, small business managers are busy trying to keep up with ever-changing financial news. Luckily, local banking and economic experts can help make sense of the information to make the best decisions possible.

"Business owners should connect with banking, real estate and other experts in their industry to ensure they address each step and ask every question," advises Brandon Carroll, small business relationship manager at First Financial Bank in Carmel.

Advisers at local community institutions, such as First Financial Bank, serve as guides to the financial aspects of buying cycles. “It's important that business owners understand their options when it comes to managing their business, whether looking to purchase a new location, equipment or make building improvements and renovations. Lenders work alongside business owners when evaluating the total cost of a project, financing requirements and impact, so the business owner knows what a loan will do for them today and down the line,” he explains.

Business owners should look for banking partners that will monitor rate variations closely and work with them to understand how rate adjustments and changes can benefit their financial position. These open conversations also may lead to new opportunities for growth.

Carroll focuses on commercial and industrial businesses. Working alongside companies, such as manufacturers, medical professionals, lawn care services and construction companies, he says he builds a relationship with each owner.

The backbone of a local economy is small businesses. First Financial Bank professionals, along with other lenders, want to help businesses grow and drive profits, in addition to supporting the overall Carmel community and region.

Small business owners are seeing results when they seek expert advice. “Currently, I’m assisting a business client in refinancing their company vehicles. As a result, the company will be able to use funds to hire more staff and serve a larger number of local customers. That's an example of how open conversations with banking experts can help a business and community grow,” explains Carroll.

Being able to pivot and adjust resources in response to changing economic conditions and financial advice is crucial for business owners, and partnering with a local financial institution provides them with the best chance of success.

“My clients appreciate it when I can introduce them to other business owners who have had a similar business issue and can offer advice,” he says. “Being intentional to build relationships instead of transactions is something that can lead to economic success for many businesses.”

Local economies also benefit when area businesses collaborate on growth initiatives. If a local realtor meets with a CPA and a lawyer for breakfast at a restaurant, all area businesses benefit from the partnerships. “My clients appreciate helping out other small businesses,” says Carroll.

Carmel's First Financial Bank professionals can draw support from colleagues across the institution's five states of operations, based in their solid, original roots in Terre Haute, Indiana. It's the only publicly traded company with headquarters in Vigo County, and the oldest continually operated business serving the area.

APPRECIATING ART’S SAVING GRACE

Artist Matt "Rosey" Rosebrough Channels Struggles With Depression/ OCD Into Vivid, Hopeful Paintings To Inspire, Sell

BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY

"Every time I paint, I’m not just creating on canvas, I’m navigating my mind. Living with OCD means my process is about balance, taking the chaos in my head and finding rhythm through brushstrokes," says regional fine artist Matt "Rosey" Rosebrough.

"Painting quiets the noise and opens space for peace. Painting gives form to the things I can’t always explain with words. My work's both self-help and an invitation for others to step inside my mind space."

Artist Matt “Rosey” Rosebrough has an art studio at The Stutz in Indy.
Rosey’s work was championed by Daymond John’s Shark Art, celebrating his creativity with public shout-outs and career support.

Admirers of Rosey's work indicate it's a bit like entering a world where emotions are painted with raw, vivid strokes. "I channel the depths of my inner struggles with depression and the incessant weight of OCD into my work. The canvas becomes a battleground, where shadows of despair intermingle with bursts of color that represent moments of hope," he says.

Rosey leverages those quiet moments of aspiration, demonstrating that there's true beauty in imperfection. His work can be viewed in Carmel at the Inner Circle Gallery, as well as pop-up events, live pieces' paintings at restaurants and community arts programs. He was chosen to be in Art Week Miami this December after receiving support from Daymond John on ABCTV's "Shark Tank." His original and printed art also can be purchased online at ArtByRosey.Shop.

Diving into creativity for mental health, this 27-yearold Greenwood resident says art is his therapy and voice regarding struggles with OCD, anxiety and depression. By sharing his journey through paintings and speaking engagements, he sparks honest conversations around mental health recovery.

Tips on meal prepping for less stress

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful. To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Create Your Thanksgiving Menu

• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark.

• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.

• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand.

• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.

• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.

4-5 DAYS BEFORE

Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh

Groceries

• Clean your home completely. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.

• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.

• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating.

2-3 DAYS BEFORE

Prep Meals & Set the Table

• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.

• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go. Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free.

• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.

• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.

1 DAY BEFORE

Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks

• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum.

• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough.

• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.

• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!

• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.

Your New Fall Outdoor Space

H O P E

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
