Style It Up: Be Uniquely You This Fall!

Happy September Fabulous Readers!

As summer fades, it’s time to embrace the glorious chaos of fall. There’s something about autumn fashion that just hits differently. Maybe it’s the nostalgia of back-to-school shopping—I still get giddy about new clothes, even if my school days are long gone. This year, my daughters are leading the charge for back-to-school shopping, and let me tell you, they want all the things, which has me on a budget-reining mission! The seasons seem to switch so quickly too; one week it’s all about bathing suits and  flip-flops, and the next, we’re picking out sweaters and boots.

September is our style issue, and let’s be honest—style isn’t just about what we wear. It’s woven into how we decorate our homes, the tunes we blast, the books we devour, and even how we converse. So, as you flip through this month’s issue, I hope you find a sprinkle of inspiration to jazz up your life.

As we prepared for this issue I had the chance to attend a photo shoot with Danielle Cabral from “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” Let me tell you, she’s a total pro. We met at a park where her husband and two kids came along to play and get some fresh air. Danielle juggled modeling and parenting like a champ, effortlessly striking poses while keeping an eye on her little ones. Between shots, she cracked jokes and even took a moment to ask about my family. I could practically hear the “uh-oh” alarm buzzing in her eyes when I mentioned I have four daughters. Turn to page 12 to discover more about Danielle’s life on a hit reality TV show and what it’s like running her stylish children’s brand, Boujie Kidz.

What I’ve learned is that the best style is simply being your authentic self. It’s something no one can replicate. While “stylish” may not be the first word that comes to mind when you think of me, I feel comfortable in my own skin—so can I really ask for more?

Here’s to celebrating the wonderfully unique you!

to Couture FROM HOUSEWIVES

When it comes to children's fashion, trends change as quickly as a toddler's attention span. Danielle Cabral, a member of 'The Real Housewives of New Jersey,' shines with her vibrant and personalized brand, Boujie Kidz. Cabral’s road to becoming an entrepreneur reflects passion, perseverance, and a touch of Jersey pride.

Danielle Cabral’s Boujie Kidz Journey, with Jersey Pride

Life was not always so glamorous for Cabral. "I was working in sales and event planning in Manhattan, but I wasn't happy." She shares candidly, “I needed a change. Dressing my kids in unique, over-the-top outfits was always my thing." Inspired by her love for fashion and driven by a desire to create something of her own, Cabral embarked on a journey that would lead to the birth of Boujie Kidz.

The idea sparked during a late-night Pinterest session. "I created a Pinterest board titled 'New Life' and began envisioning colors and concepts for my business," Cabral explains. "Before I knew it, I was learning to code a website, manage marketing, and even handle shipping logistics."

The name 'Boujie Kidz' itself reflects Cabral's style and personality. "Everybody used to call me ‘bougie’ because I love adding a touch of glitter or sparkle," Cabral laughs. "When naming my brand, 'bougie' felt exactly right. The 'J' in 'boujie' adds a classy twist, and 'Kidz' with a 'Z' gives it that playful edge."

Setting Boujie Kidz apart from other children's clothing brands was crucial for Cabral. "I wanted to offer fun, stylish clothing that's also affordable," she explains. "While high-end stores weren't in my budget as a mom, I made sure Boujie Kidz would cater to budget-conscious parents without compromising on style or quality."

Navigating the retail space posed its challenges, especially with pricing. "I learned the hard way when my first line was too costly to produce locally," Cabral reflects. "But I refused to compromise on affordability. It's about staying relevant and competitive with big retailers like Walmart and Amazon."

As Boujie Kidz gained momentum, Cabral’s role evolved beyond business owner to community figure. "I'm not just the face of Boujie Kidz; I'm also the voice," she emphasizes. "I listen to what parents and kids want. Custom orders, adding rhinestones to socks, or personalizing birthday outfits—these are the touches that make Boujie Kidz special."

Influenced by her own children's preferences, Cabral ensures Boujie Kidz stays ahead of trends. "My daughter is my toughest critic," she laughs. "She keeps me grounded and ensures our designs are trendy and practical."

Balancing a small business and family life is not easy, especially with the added spotlight from television appearances. "My husband and I make a great team," Cabral says gratefully. "We juggle business responsibilities with our kids' activities, and it's a whirlwind, but we manage."

Reflecting on her newfound fame, Cabral remains grounded. "Being on a popular TV show has its perks, but it's not everything," she muses. “It could all end tomorrow. So, I need to build something more than just being on a show about Housewives. I need to have some substance in my career that will take me to the finish line.”

Cabral also emphasizes, "I want Boujie Kidz to stand for more—quality, affordability, and a touch of Jersey flair."

As Cabral looks to the future, she hopes to expand Boujie Kidz while staying true to its roots. "I want to keep growing, maybe bring in more designers," she envisions. "But it's about staying connected to what parents and kids love."

With her blend of creativity, resilience, and Jersey attitude, Cabral's journey with Boujie Kidz is a testament to chasing dreams and embracing every challenge along the way. So, whether you are dressing your kids to the nines or navigating the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, remember to add a touch of ‘boujie’ flair—it is what Cabral and Boujie Kidz are all about.

EMBRACING NEW PERSPECTIVES

THROUGH A CREATIVE LENS WITH DONNA

GIOIA VOLPE
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GIOIA VOLPE
Owner - Donna Gioia Volpe

Discovering a new passion later in life can be a daunting task. For Donna Gioia Volpe, a Somerville local and photographer for Bridgewater City Lifestyle, photography began as an exciting hobby and quickly evolved into a profound exploration of artistry and human connection. "I always enjoyed capturing moments and scenery," she reflects. "But it wasn't until later, when my kids were older and I found myself with more time, that I decided to delve deeper." Initially, Volpe enjoyed focusing on landscapes, inspired by her yearly trips to Vermont. However, her work with City Lifestyle introduced her to various genres, such as food photography and portraiture, giving her the confidence to transition from landscapes to more people-centric photography. "Working with City Lifestyle exposed me to various genres like food photography and portraiture," she explains. "It gave me the confidence to transition from landscapes to more people-centric photography."

Her path into headshot and portrait photography was a practical decision as much as it was creative. "Traveling for landscape photography was costly," she admits. "So, I thought, why not turn portrait photography into something to support my hobby?" This decision allowed her to continue working creatively beyond retirement.

Transitioning into this new field, Volpe embraced the challenges with enthusiasm. "Starting out during a shoot, I focus on making clients feel comfortable," she notes. "I approach each session as if we're old friends, which helps create relaxed, natural portraits." As Volpe continues to define her style, she emphasizes the importance of creating a comfortable atmosphere for her clients.

Guiding clients in selecting the right style for headshots involves understanding their needs. "For corporate clients, it's about professionalism with neutral backgrounds," Volpe explains. "For actors, a more natural look that reflects their casting potential."

Her love for photography extends beyond headshots, and she envisions future projects such as surprise proposals and engagement shoots. "I want to venture into surprise proposals and engagement shoots. I love capturing the candid moments that demonstrate the joy of a moment," she muses.

For Volpe, photography isn't just about capturing images; it's about empowering people. "Seeing clients gain confidence during a shoot is incredibly rewarding," she shares. "Helping them shine in front of the camera is why I do this." As she continues to grow her portfolio and skills, her passion for photography remains steadfast. "Photography allows me to learn and create while building a second career that will keep me engaged and passion driven," she says. For Volpe, photography is a journey of discovery and connection that she looks forward to expanding.

Osprey Lane

A Story of Community, Resilience, and Style

ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JILLIAN SPENCER
Owner - Maria Vraniak

On West Main Street in Somerville, Osprey Lane Boutique symbolizes the resilience, passion, and community spirit of its owner, Maria Vraniak. From overcoming personal battles to weathering the challenges of a pandemic, Vraniak's journey from a corporate career to the world of fashion has been anything but predictable.

THE BEGINNINGS

Vraniak's journey into the fashion world began in an unconventional way. "I started in a pop-up trailer at the end of December 2021," she recalls. Osprey Lane, initially formed as an LLC, transitioned to a mobile trailer in July 2022, which they lovingly called "The Mobile Osprey." This unique concept transformed a trailer into a mobile boutique complete with a fitting room and lights, offering a personalized shopping experience at local markets, private parties, and events. She operated "The Mobile Osprey" for a year until opening her storefront in May 2023.

Before diving into the boutique business, Vraniak had an extensive career in the pharmaceutical industry. She served as the national account director for a generic pharmaceutical company for nearly a decade. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought a shift in her perspective. "I was bored. And I thought we would never be able to travel again," she reflects. Encouraged by her husband to pursue her passion for fashion, Vraniak enrolled in online courses for fashion merchandising at Cornell University, earning her degree and laying the foundation for Osprey Lane Boutique.

OPENING THE STOREFRONT

Expanding from a mobile trailer to a brick-andmortar store was a significant step for Vraniak. "We have a five-year lease, so I have no choice but to make it work," she says with determination. The store's opening in May 2023 marked a new chapter for Osprey Lane Boutique. Despite the challenges, Vraniak is thrilled with the progress. "Time certainly has flown. And I cannot believe all we have done to get here."

The decision to establish the boutique in Somerville was driven by the community's needs. "A lot of the customers at various in-town pop-ups said, 'We need you here, in town. We do not have anything here for women," Vraniak notes. After considering various locations, the sense of community in Somerville won her over. "I'm from Bridgewater and Somerville is like our downtown. There are no clothing stores here for women except for Revive Consignment," she says.

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY

The Somerville community has played a crucial role in the success of Osprey Lane Boutique. This sense of belonging was particularly evident during a local fire that affected several Somerville businesses this past June. "We were a hub for donations. I walked into my store and was overwhelmed by the amount of donations within a very short period of time," Vraniak recalls. The community’s swift response brought her to tears, underscoring the support and unity that defines Somerville.

Vraniak reflects on first opening her store, "Not for one minute did I ever feel like the new kid on the block." The local businesses welcomed her with open arms.

“Not for one minute did I ever feel like the new kid on the block, they welcomed me with open arms.” - Maria Vraniak

OVERCOMING PERSONAL CHALLENGES

Vraniak's journey has not been without personal struggles. Leaving her corporate job was challenging, especially given her close ties to her former colleagues. "I had a brain tumor and went through all of that while I was working in my corporate role. They were like my extended family," she shares. Despite this, her former employer's support remained unwavering, even keeping her job open as a safety net. "They kept my job open until January of the following year," Vraniak says.

Her husband’s unwavering support was also instrumental in her transition. "He's a go-getter. He told me, 'You will never fail; you are going to launch, you are going to make mistakes, you are going to learn from those mistakes, and you are going to adjust and move forward,'" Vraniak says. This support, combined with her resilience, helped her navigate the uncertainties of starting a new business.

CURATING FALL STYLES

As the seasons change, Osprey Lane Boutique prepares to highlight the latest fall styles. Vraniak's approach to curating her collection is thoughtful and inclusive. "We are size inclusive. We carry XS to 3X as well as some petite denim," she explains. Her commitment to inclusivity extends beyond sizes to the styles she offers. "I want people to feel confident and powerful when they leave the store."

Shopping for a diverse range of customers presents its challenges. "It's very difficult to shop for the petite or curvy community. The brands often put bright colors and big patterns that are not appealing. I will not just buy an item just to say I carry all sizes. It has to be in line with what our brand is all about," Vraniak notes.

Looking ahead to fall, Osprey Lane Boutique is ready to embrace this season's trends. "The trends that are coming to market are kind of crazy, but we'll see how we can make them work," Vraniak says with a smile. From cozy sweaters to stylish denim, her goal is to provide options that cater to all body types and preferences.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Vraniak's vision for Osprey Lane Boutique is clear. She wants it to be more than just a place to shop— she wants it to be a community hub where everyone feels welcome. "I want our clients to feel confident, powerful, safe, and welcomed," she says. Her commitment to personalized service and quality products sets Osprey Lane apart from larger retailers.

"Not everybody is small; not everybody has this Barbie figure; and not everyone's the same," Vraniak notes. Her dedication to offering inclusive fashion is a cornerstone of her boutique's philosophy. She continuously seeks feedback from her customers to ensure that her store meets their needs.

In Somerville, Osprey Lane Boutique is not just a store; it is a symbol of strength, resilience, community, and style. With the support of her community and family, Vraniak has created a space where everyone can find something that makes them feel beautiful and confident. As the leaves change and the air becomes crisp, Osprey Lane Boutique stands ready to welcome fall with open arms and a collection of the season's best styles.
