Cheers to 5 Years!
Where did the time go? Five years ago, we embarked on this incredible journey. It was August of 2019 when the premiere issue of Bridgewater City Lifestyle—back then called Bridgewater Lifestyle—first hit homes. I remember the excitement and anticipation like it was yesterday. I kept checking my mailbox, eagerly waiting for the issue to arrive. Even now, five years later, I still get a thrill when the new issue shows up at my house. Despite receiving boxes of Publishers’ copies, there’s something special about seeing it arrive in the actual mail. I love that I live within the community we serve.
The August issue is always one of my favorites. What do children and pets have in common? They both need us. Our care, attention, and intention shape how they are raised and who they become. Pets provide us with unconditional love and the chance to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could overlook the bond between kids and their furry friends? This bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
For the past few years, we have run a Doggy Cover Model contest, and the community support has always been heartwarming. This year, over a thousand votes were cast, and Theo emerged victorious. You can learn more about this adorable Golden Retriever on page 20.
As a family of six, there’s certainly no shortage of cooking going on in our house. While my girls are quite skilled at making eggs and mac n’ cheese, BridgewaterRaritan Regional High School student, Jack Friedlander, takes cooking to the next level. Looking for a delicious skirt steak recipe? Check out Jack’s recipe on page 26. He proves that you don’t have to be an adult to cook like one. Hopefully, my girls will take note—I think I’ll even show them this recipe!
As we wrap up this summer, it's a great time to reflect on the simple pleasures that children and pets bring into our lives. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life this month. Enjoy this last month of summer before the chaos of September begins. Cherish these warm days and the opportunities they bring to connect and create lasting memories with your loved ones.

Inside Rockstar! Studios
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARLY MAC MANUS
At Rockstar! Studios, the rhythm is not just in the music—it is in the heartbeat of the community. Located in Middlesex, this music and performing arts studio is not just about teaching notes and steps; it is about nurturing dreams and creating a sense of belonging. Ashley Bowen Mondragon, the owner of Rockstar! Studios, shares how aspiring talents can shine brightly.
Rockstar! Studios is not your average music school. From private music lessons to group classes, dance programs to acting workshops, this studio is a hub of creativity and ambition. Mondragon describes it as a “college and professional prep program,” where students of all ages are guided toward their dreams of a career in the performing arts. But it is not only about honing skills; it is about building a supportive community that uplifts every member.
“Our studio runs on the belief that talent should be nurtured and supported,” Mondragon explains. “We're not just teaching music, acting or dance; we're shaping futures and instilling a lifelong love for the performing arts.”

One of the studio's standout features is its commitment to providing real-world experience.Unlike competitive-focused studios, Rockstar! emphasizes performance opportunities that mirror professional settings. “Our approach is all about giving students the chance to shine on stage,” Mondragon says. “These performances aren't just about showcasing talent; they're about building confidence and resilience.”
But what truly sets Rockstar! Studios apart is its family centric approach. Mondragon's upbringing, surrounded by a love for music and performance, inspired her to create a space where families could bond over their shared passion. With her mother leading the acting department and her husband heading the rock band program, Rockstar! Studios is a true family affair.
“I grew up in a household where music and theater were a way of life.” Mondragon recalls. “I wanted to recreate that sense of community and camaraderie here at Rockstar!!.”

For Mondragon, the sense of community goes beyond the studio walls. It is about connecting with the town of Middlesex and its surround towns; showing the importance of the arts in enriching lives. Through festivals, fairs, and community events, Rockstar! Studios not only highlights its talents but also advocates for the enduring value of artistic expression.
“In a world that's increasingly digital and disconnected, the arts have the power to bring people together,” Mondragon reflects. “That's why we're committed to being an active part of our community.”

WITH THE BAYLES FAMILY SPEECH CENTER
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JILLIAN SPENCER
In a world where screens dictate our every move and your little one's development is so important. In Bridgewater, the Bayles Family Speech Center serves as guidance for families navigating the world of child development. Founded by Denise Bayles, a dedicated speech-language pathologist and business owner, the center goes beyond conventional speech therapy.
Bayles, shares her passion for aiding children's development and the start of her video program, “Help Me Help My Kids.” Bayles shares, “Several years ago, I had two different moms express to me their regret of not knowing certain strategies earlier to support their older children's speech,” Bayles recounts. “It became apparent to me that family training is essential. It's like practicing sports. You can't expect improvement without consistent effort outside of therapy sessions.”
The need for the program intensified during the pandemic when Bayles realized the heightened developmental challenges children faced. “I prioritized simple strategies to give parents and caregivers techniques to help their children improve at home,” she explains. “The program aims to provide educational information not readily available to parents unless they seek therapy.”
Bayles emphasizes that “Help Me Help My Kids” is not a replacement for therapy but a supplement, offering insights into early childhood development. The program covers vital topics like hearing screenings for newborns, the importance of tummy time, feeding and swallowing skills, and play's role in language development.
“We need to minimize screen time,” Bayles asserts, highlighting a pressing concern in today's digital age. “Excessive screen time inhibits social skills and communication development, leading to a lack of face-toface communication and self-regulation.”
Addressing the program's accessibility, Bayles ensures it's a manageable 40-minute educational session available for purchase on her website. She underscores the need for moderation and encourages
“I’ve always believed in the power of early intervention and parental involvement.”
parents to foster interaction through activities like family dinners, reading books and playing games.
Bayles reflects on the program's significance, and the opportunity to shed light on essential developmental practices. “I've always believed in the power of early intervention and parental involvement,” she says. “By equipping parents with knowledge and tools, we can pave the way for our children to function more independently and be better communicators."

IN PURSUIT OF FLAVOR
Jack Friedlander Fuels His Cooking With World Travels In Search of New Tastes
ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GIOIA VOLPE
Jack Friedlander has always felt most at home in the kitchen, experimenting, mixing, tasting, challenging himself.
Globe-trotting family excursions inspired the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional High School junior into questioning the limits of food—and how far he could take it. “We travel a lot, which gave Jack a worldly experience that led to his interest in exotic foods,” says his mother, Stacey.
Friedlander recalls a trip to the Bahamas, where he ate conch salad for the first time and fresh catches from fishermen right off the boat. “Experiences like this made me realize that food is more varied than we eat at home,” he says. “Since then, I have been to countries like France and England, which have sophisticated flavors, and Hawaii, which has its own island sense of culinary experiences.”
To inspire and hone his skills, Friedlander follows celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsay, hobby chefs and Michelin Star restaurants, like Girl and the Goat in Chicago. (Friedlander has dined there, of course.) He credits his uncle, Justin Katz, with helping him better understand cooking meat and seafood. “I want to learn and perfect new techniques and discover more about the science behind food,” he says.
In the kitchen, Friedlander loves mixing spices—especially those used in Mexico and South America—with a mortar and pestle. He recently started bottling his own hot sauces.
“He’s always experimenting,” his mother says. “When he was younger, he would jazz up
an egg with different sauces and seasonings. He also would pick out what he wanted to grow in our vegetable garden. One year, he wanted to grow Carolina Reapers, and that pepper plant has a home in my living room because we refuse to let it die.”
Although he is taking a culinary class in school, Friedlander wants to keep cooking as a passion rather than a career. “For a career, I’m looking at business or marketing but cooking will always be a part of my life,” he says.
He loves sharing his knowledge, either with his classmates or the community. As a member of the teen board at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center in Bridgewater, he hopes to plan a youth activity that centers around cooking.
When not cooking at home, the young foodie gravitates to favorite establishments like Ryujin Sushi and Kurry and Naan in Bridgewater, Ai Sushi and Kuay Tiew in Somerville and Ninety Acres in Peapack for special occasions.
But his favorite table is the one in his Bridgwater home. And the Friedlander family, which includes his father Michael and younger brother, Max, are the beneficiaries of his exceptional home-cooked meals.
“We have always trusted him in the kitchen,” his mother says. “When he was young, we taught him kitchen safety, then just walked away and let him go for it. Then, when we came back 45 minutes later, there were these incredible creations.”
SKIRT STEAK WITH CHIMICHURRI SAUCE
Purchase an “outside skirt steak” from your local butcher or supermarket. Choosing the outside skirt steak instead of the tougher inside skirt steak helps ensure tender meat.
Chimichurri Sauce:
• 1 shallot, finely chopped
• 1 chili or red jalapeño, finely chopped
• 3-4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced or finely chopped
• 1 c. red wine vinegar
• 1 tsp. kosher salt, plus more
• 1/2 c. finely chopped cilantro
• 1/4 c. finely chopped flat-leaf parsley
• 2 tbsp. finely chopped oregano
• 3/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil
Directions:
Combine shallot, chili, garlic, vinegar and 1 tsp. salt in a medium bowl. Let sit 10 minutes.
Stir in cilantro, parsley and oregano. Using a fork, whisk in oil.
Transfer ½ c. chimichurri to a small bowl; season with salt and reserve as sauce.
Place meat in a glass, stainless-steel or ceramic dish. Toss with remaining chimichurri. Cover and chill at least 3 hours or up to overnight.
Remove meat from marinade, pat dry and grill.
Tip: Rub the steaks with baking soda after the marinade, which encourages browning, and then grill them over high heat to ensure that they cook to medium and brown nicely in the same amount of time.
Spoon reserved chimichurri over grilled meat.
Suggestion: Serve alongside grilled vegetables or potatoes with a side of guacamole and chips.

K9 Resorts is not just a luxury pet hotel but a safe haven for rescued animals in need. Owners Luca Blessent and Georgina Ramirez's journey into the world of pet hospitality is marked by a commitment to rescue efforts.
Before the opening of K9 Resorts Hillsborough in December of 2022, Blessent's involvement with Best Friend Dog and Animal Adoption, Inc. laid the foundation for his advocacy for rescue animals. Through weekends spent volunteering alongside his wife, Blessent witnessed firsthand the plight of abandoned and neglected animals. It was here that the seeds of compassion were planted, lighting a passion to make a difference in the lives of these voiceless pups.
Driven by a desire to extend a lifeline to those in need, Blessent and Ramirez made a decision to integrate rescue efforts into the fabric of K9 Resorts. Blessent says he reached out to Best Friend Dog and Animal Adoption, Inc., “Offering boarding services to alleviate the burden on overcrowded shelters.” This relationship between K9 Resorts and rescue organizations not only provides a temporary refuge for rescued pets but also facilitates their journey towards finding forever homes.
Blessent emphasizes, "Our team at the resort fully embraced the idea of providing a fostering opportunity for dogs awaiting adoption."
K9's team members go above and beyond to provide them with extra special care during their extending time at the resort to make them feel like at home. Blessent shares, "Some of our team members started volunteering for BFDAAA as well."
Lauren DeNoma the President of BFDAAA shares, "Best Friend Dog and Animal Adoption Inc is deeply grateful for K9 resort's incredibly generous collaboration over the past several months. Their decision to foster several of our dogs has made an immeasurable impact on our organization. Thanks to their kindness and commitment we were able to save three more dogs."
As Blessent and Ramirez reflect on this journey, they remain committed to their belief that true success lies not in material wealth but in the lives touched and the hearts uplifted along the way, leaving a mark on the world—one paw print at a time.
