Cross Country program has loftier goals than a year ago
Cross Country Coach Jeff Martin shows the route to senior Ryan Carney during the first week of workouts. Coach Jeff Martin is preparing for his second year as the leader of the cross country program in Howe. During the Thursday morning fog, he had two seniors, one junior, and two freshmen. It appears that the cross country will be a varsity-only sport. The two girls in the program are expecting to have phenomenal years. Bethany Master and Kristian Southerland have had previous success in both cross country and track. Southerland missed the first week of workouts because of her attendance at a cross country camp. She moved here a year ago from North Lamar where they went to state for three years.

Martin hopes to approve upon the learning curve that last season was for him and the team. "We've set our expectations a little bit higher than we did a year ago," said Martin. Bethany Masters won the Southeastern Cross Country Meet a year ago before an injury cut her season short. "With her and Kristian, I expect a lot out of those two," said Martin. "I expect a lot out of Ryan (Carney) too.
