It is officially schooltime again in Howe, Texas! My Facebook feed was flooded this week with adorable “first day of school” pictures.
Prayers go out for all students, staff, parents, and loved ones of our school children and for their school year!

TheHoweEnterprise changedhandsinownershipasofNovember 2024.Withownership changes,decisionsneededtobemadeandadjustedforhowwewould moveforwardinmany aspectsofthepaper,and willcontinueastime passes.
Oneofthethingsunder considerationtochange wastodowhatmost othernewspaperswith professionalphotographersdothesedays–makemoneyfromsports photos.Wewereconsideringmovinginthisdirection,whichiswhywe kepttheSmugMugwebsiteforalmostthepast year.However,after considerationanddiscussionsbetweenmyself astheownerandour sportsphotographer, MichelleCarneyamutualagreementandunder-
standingwasreachedof whatwebothfeltwas important.
BothMichelleandIare passionateaboutsports andchildren.Weboth valuetheimportanceof kidsandparentshaving accesstopicturesofkids’ sportingevents.Asweall know,timepassesbyfast
andhighschoolsports areatreasuredtimein lifeformanypeople.We havebothdecidedwe wanttoprovidethatto thecommunityfreeof chargetoyouallthrough TheHoweEnterprisevia ourFacebookpage.

Thislastweekshewasaskedtodo somethinghard somethingshewould typicallysay“no”toinaninstantbecauseitrequiredstandinginfrontof othersandsharingherviews.Butinsteadofhertypicalresponse,shequicklyagreedtodoit.Wewereallshocked. Sheagreedagain thenbacktracked, butlaughed.Welaughedtooandjokinglytoldhershewasonthehookbecauseshesaid“yes,”andshesaiditwas fine.
Allweeklongsherefusedtoworkonit. Shealwayshadsomething“better”to do.She’doccasionallymentionthat she’drathernotdoit,butmostlyshe justputitoff.Finally,thenightbefore,I satherdowntoworkonit.Sheacted lazyanddefiant.Nothingcametoher mind.Excusesflew shecouldn’t write,shewastootired,toosick,itjust wasn’tgoingtowork.
Iaskedherquestions,readherquotes, andpulledtogetheraspeechbasedon herminimalresponses.Iwashelping, butmostlypulling tryingtobepositive.Becausesheisateenager,capable ofdoingthis,andthiswasjustdumb howshewasacting.Timetogrowup, sis!
Shewenttobedfrustratedandupset notbecauseofwhatIwrote,butbecauseheranxietywouldn’tletherfocus onherownwords.Herfocuswason gettingupinfrontofothers.Onbeing embarrassed.
Themorningcame,anditwastimeto getoutofbed.Tears.Exhaustion.That wordagain defiance.Butitwasn’t.I hadjustreadaquote:“Parentinglike Jesusisn’taboutgettingthehonor‘we deserve’;it’saboutgivingthegrace theydesperatelyneed.”CouldIbelike Christinthismoment?Yes.
Itoldhershedidn’thavetospeak.Itold herIwouldtextthecoordinatorright then,andIdid.IexplainedthatIdidn’t thinkshe’dbeableto,andapologized forthelatenotice.
Ourgirltried.Toothersitmaylooklike shedidn’t.Butshedid.Shedesperately wantedtoplease.Shedesperatelywantedtoshareherthoughts.Butanxiety frozeher.

TexasHistoryMinute “Houston,we’ve hadaproblem,” werethewordsof Apollo13astronautJimLovell whenanexplosion crippledthespacecraftandthreatenedthelivesofthecrew. Whatstartedasaterrorthatthreatenedtheirlives andfordaysgrippedtheattentionof theworldbecameoneofthegreatadventuresofmannedspaceflight,an eventrememberedasthenation mournsthepassingofLovell,who diedathishomeinIllinoisatage97. Apollo13wastobethethird attemptbyNASAastronautstoland ontheMoon.Apollomissionswere mannedbythreeastronautstakingoff fromCapeCanaveral,Florida. Once theyreachedtheMoon,alunarmodulewoulddetachfromacommand module. Thelunarmodulewould reachthesurfacewheretwoastronauts wouldthenexplorethesurface,collect rocksamples,andconductexperiments. Thecommandmodulewould orbitabove,withthelunarmodule reattachingtothecommandmodule aftertakingofffromthelunarsurface. OncetheyreturnedtoEarth,areentrycapsulewoulddetachfromthe commandmoduleforthedescent throughtheatmospheretoasplashdowninthePacificOcean.
Thethreeastronautsforthe Apollo13missionwere:JimLovell, FredHaise,andJackSwigert. Lovell andHaisewouldbeinthelunarmodule. Lovellwasborn inCleveland,Ohio,in1928andgraduatedfromtheU.S.NavalAcademyin 1954. Hehadpreviouslyflownin spacetwicebefore,includingthe Gemini7missionin1965,whichseta recordoffourteendaysinorbit. He wouldalsoflyontheApollo8moonshotin1968,whereonChristmasEve, hejoinedhiscrewmatesinreadingthe BiblicalstoryofcreationfromGenesis toaglobalaudience. Haisewasborn inMississippiin1933andcompleteda degreeat theUniversityofOklahomain1959 beforebeingselectedasanastronautin 1966. AstronautKenMattinglywas originallysupposedtoflythecommandmodule,butNASAflightsurgeonsgroundedhimafterhewasexposedtoGermanmeasles,replacing himwithSwigert. Swigertwasborn inDenver,Colorado,in1931. Asa teenager,hesavedmoneyfromapaperroutetopayforflyinglessons, gainingapilotslicenseatage 16. Afterhegraduatedfrom theUniversityofColorado,hejoined theairforcein1953.
TheylaunchedonApril11, 1970. Theastronautshadeachspent morethan1,000hourstrainingforthe mission,whichhadbeendelayeda month. Twodaysintothemission, NASAgroundcontrollersnoticeda malfunctionandaskedthecrewto activatethestirringfansintheoxygen tanksoftheservicemodulewithinthe commandmodule. Thesetankswere thesourceofairandelectricityforthe commandmodule. Investigatorslater determinedthatdamagedwiringhad short-circuited,ignitinginsulation,and causinganexplosion.
NASAgroundcontrollers
quicklyrealizedthedangerofthesituationandscrambledtosavethelives oftheastronauts. Theastronautshad toshutdownthecommandmodule andmoveintothelunarmoduleto haveenoughairtosurvive. Insteadof turningthecraftaround,NASAdecidedtoletthemomentumofthecraft carryittotheMoonandslingshotback toEarth,whichwouldtakefourdays. Ateamofgroundcontrollers,scientists,andengineersfromacrossthe globeworkedaroundtheclockto workaroundtheproblemsofthecrippledcapsule. Everysecondandevery pieceofequipmentcounted. Forwhat everyoneknew,nohelpcouldcome rescueApollo13–theyhadtorelyon theinformationsuppliedfrom Earth.Thesmallestmiscalculation couldbefatal.
Temperaturesplungedto38degrees insidethemodule,andthecrewhadto quicklyimproviseadevicetofilterout thebuildinglevelsofcarbondioxide theywereexhaling.
Thefinalchallengewasa21secondenginethrusttoputitbackon courseforasafere-entry. Though groundcontrollerssuppliedallthe numbersthecrewneeded,astronauts hadtotimetheengineburnperfectly andanglethemselvesproperly,using onlythegrowingimageoftheEarthin awindow. Themaneuverwassuccessful,andthecrewsplasheddown safelyonApril17.
Intheprocess,whatinitially wasaneardisasterinsteadbecameone ofthegreatestfeatsofnavigationin history. Apollo13astronautsconductedasuccessfulmoonshot–onlythe fifthtimeeverthathadeverbeencompletedwithamannedcrew–andcompletedajourneyofmorethan500,000 milesonanunpoweredApollocapsule usingonlyacoupleofsmallthrusters andline-of-sightnavigation.
Lovellcreditedgroundcontrollerswithsavingtheirlives. There wouldonlybefourmoremannedlunarmissions,withthelastconducted bytheApollo17astronautsinDecember1972.
HaisepilotedtheexperimentalSpace ShuttleEnterpriseonitsApproachand LandingTestsin1977beforeretiring fromNASAin1979andisstillaTexasresident. HewouldwriteNever PanicEarly,amemoirofhistimeasan astronaut. SwigertleftNASAin1977 andwonelectiontotheUnitedStates HouseofRepresentatives fromColoradoshortlybeforehisdeath fromcancerin1982. Lovellleft NASAin1973andbecameatelecommunicationsexecutiveintheHouston areaaswellasapopularspeaker andauthor. Asmallcrateronthefar sideoftheMoonisnamedfor him. His1994bookonthemission,LostMoon,wasthebasisofthe popular1995filmApollo13. Lovell canbrieflybeseeninaclosingscene ofthemovieshakingthehandofactor TomHanks,whoportrayedhim. He wouldlatermovetoIllinoistoserveas acorporateexecutiveforCentelCorporationuntilhisretirementin 1991. AtthetimeofLovell'sdeath,he wastheoldestsurvivingformerastronaut.

Thoughtsaboutthe comingtribulation Irarelydiscussend-time events,but I’vebeenreceivingemails withquestions pertainingto thechurch beingremovedfrom theearth,the secondcomingofJesus, andtheantiChrist.ThereasonissimplewhyI avoidthesetopics,andithastodowith beingunsureofmyinterpretationsof them.I’msureyouareawarethereare manyopinionsabouteschatologywith mostBibleteachersandscholarsbeing convincedtheyarecorrect.But,ifall Biblepassageswerecrystalclear,there wouldonlybeoneChristianchurch andeveryfollowerofGodwouldbein agreementwithoutanystrifeordivisions.Thepurposeofthiscolumnis notaplacetobecontroversialover religiousdoctrinesorstirupangerover politicalpositions,buttopresentinspirationalandencouragingmessagesto helpusunderstandwhatGodwants fromusandwhatourresponsibilities aretoHim.Ontheotherhand,weare nottobeafraidtostandfortruthdueto fearofpubliccriticism.Pastorsface thiseverySunday.Therefore,withso manyimportantquestionsaboutour future,I’mcuriouslikemostofyou aboutwhatisgoingtohappenand hopingIwillbeabletodiscernthe signs.Justletmesaymypersonal viewsarenotsetindogmaticconcrete, butratherarepossiblescenariosand considerations.
Iwanttofocusthisweekandnext weekabouttheantiChrist,butbefore webegin,IrealizetheraptureisasubjectwheremanyChristiansbelieve theywilldisappearanymomentwhich isconsidereda“pre-tribulation”doctrinalposition.Othersclaimtheremnant believerswillbetakenupatthemidpointofthesevenyearperiod(1260 days),whilestillyetsomeareconvincedthesaintswillremainonthe earththroughoutthetribulationandbe removedwhenthetrumpetsoundsand Christappearsinthesky.Atthistime thedeadareresurrectedasChrist crushesthearmiesatArmageddon.Is theraptureasecretevent,ordoesthe entireworldseeHimandknowwhat ishappening?IsthedayoftheLorda thirdreturn?I’msureyouhaveyour ownviewsandcanusescripturesto proveyourpoints.Onasidenote,we knowthewordraptureisnotfoundin theBible,andthatJohnNelsonDarby madethewordpopularinthe1830s.I findIIThessalonianschapter2interesting,asithassomeinterestingclues.
