The above song came out in 1907– but I was hearing my dad sing it at the beginning of every school year still in the 90’s. I didn’t even know it was an “actual song” until today when I looked up the lyrics I could still remember. over 20 years later.Apparently, he added a little flair to it and left a verse out– but it still brings a smile to my face when I think of it.
On Page 3 this week, we have an article submitted by a local father, who now has adult children. He expresses how the Howe School District and events his son participated in shaped the future of his son’s passions and profession as an adult.
I hope we can all remember what an amazing impact we can have supporting children in their passions. Many of us at some point were inspired by teachers, coaches, etc. and it grew us into the individuals we are today.
There is encouragement on a “large scale” that impacts children’s future professions– but equally as important in my opinion are the “little things” children's support systems share. Maybe you aren ’t impacting your child’s future profession yourself with what you do today, but in 25 years from now they might be sitting doing their job and be smiling ear to ear remembering a little song you sang and know that they were loved by you.

Currently,theframing packageiswrappingup andwindowsarebeing installed.Nextweek,the plumbingwillbeunderway,aswellasHVAC andwiring/ductwork. Projectmanager,Amy Gibbs,stated“wegota latestartduetoMother Natureandtheweather, butwearecrankingout thephases,now!We haveover40professionalcompaniesthatare contributingtothisproject!”
Thingsstillneededfor theprojectincludevolunteersforpaintingin early-midSeptember, painttobedonatedinthe lightgreysorneutrals, newornearnewappliancessuchas,electric ovenrange,dishwasher
andFrenchdoorrefrigerator-laundryappliances havealreadybeendonated.Additionally,meals forthevolunteerswould
begreatlyappreciated, Abby’sRestauranthas beenservicingcomplementaryburgerstothe crews,sofar.Lastly,a
vehiclethatisindecent shapewithanautomatic transmissionwouldbe appreciated,aswell.

Notlongago,oneofourkidsdidsomethinginpublicthatdidn’talignwithour familyvalues.Andagain,mydad’s wordscametomind.Isn’titagiftthat thischildhasafamily parentsand siblings wholovethemenoughto helpthemgrowandlearnfrommistakes?
Homereallyisthebestplaceforour kidstolearnhowtobehaveinthe world.It’swheretheyfigureouthowto resolveconflict,howtocontroltheir reactions,whentostopjoking,howto speakkindly,andhowtomakepeace.

TexasHistoryMinute NestledintheDavisMountainsis oneofthemost importantcenters oflearninginthe worldlocatedin oneofthemost remotepartsofthe state,thefamedMcDonaldObservatory,runbytheUniversityofTexas. Throughoutitsdecadesofoperation,theMcDonaldObservatoryhas attractedsomeofthemostimportant namesintwentieth-centuryastronomy andmadeimportantdiscoveriesfrom theinnersolarsystemtothefurthest reachesoftheuniverse.
Theobservatorywasthedream ofaquietbankerandlawyerfromParis,Texas,WilliamJohnsonMcDonald. Hehadamassedagreatfortune andleftthebulkofit,some$1million (orabout$18.3millionin2025dollars),totheUniversityofTexasonhis deathin1926toestablishanobservatory. ThoughMcDonaldhadnochildren,hehadseveralrelativeswho wereenragedathisgifttoUT. After severalyearsofcourtfights,theuniversity’sdonationwassetat $800,000.
Atthetime,theuniversitydidnothave aformalastronomydepartment,but administratorsquicklywentona searchfortopscientifictalentandfora fittinglocationfortheobservatory. Theuniversityquicklyformeda30 -yearpartnershipwiththeUniversity ofChicagotoruntheobservatory.
Inthemeantime,Edwin Fowlkesdonatedastretchofhisfamily’slandsinJeffDavisCountyinthe DavisMountainsasthesite. Fromits positioninremoteWestTexas,ithas analmostperfectpositionforgroundbasedastronomers. Thedryairmeans manyclearnightsforobserving. And itissofarfromanylargecitythatthere arenostreetlightstobreakthedarkness ofthenightsky. Astronomersareleft withonlythewideopenskyandtheir loveofthestartsabove.
Astheobservatorybecameoperational,Dr.OttoStruve,aUkrainianbornastronomerservingattheUniversityofChicago,wasnameditsfirst directorin1932. Atthesametime,he wasalsorunningtheprestigious YerkesObservatoryinWisconsin. Struvehadpreviouslydiscovered twoasteroidsandmadeimportantdiscoveriesregardingbinarystars. He quicklyestablishedMcDonaldObservatory’sreputationasanimportant centerforresearch. Struveoversaw thecompletionoftheobservatory’s renowned2.1-metertelescopein1939 onMt.Locke,ascopenownamed afterStruve. Atthetimeofitscompletion,itwasthesecond-largesttelescopeintheworld,anditwasunveiled withgreatfanfareamongscientists. Dr.GerardKuiperofTheNetherlands tookchargeoftheobservatoryasdirectorin1947. Kuiperwasalreadya respectednameinscience. Bythis point,hisdiscoveriesincludedthediscoveryofthemoonMirandaaround UranusandthesmallmoonNereid aroundNeptune. HewouldalsodiscovercarbondioxideintheatmosphereofMarsandtheexistenceofa thickmethaneatmospherearound Saturn’smoonTitan,theonlymoonin thesolarsystemwithanatmos-
phere. Hehelpedpositiontheuniversityandtheobservatoryasanimportantcenterforastronomyinthe yearsafterWorldWarII. Hewould stepdownin1949butreturnasdirectorbetween1957and1959. TheKuiperBelt,aringofdust,comets,and smallasteroidsandplanetoidsbetween 3billionand5billionmilesfromEarth thatsurroundsthesolarsystem,was namedforhimbasedonhis1951theoryofitsexistence
InbetweenKuiper’stermsas director,Dr.BengtStromgrenofDenmarkrantheobservatoryfrom1951to 1957. Stromgrenmadeanumberof importantbreakthroughsfroastronomy,includingthediscoverythatstars aremostlyhydrogenandanewphotometrysystemthatallowedastronomerstoanalyzestarlightwithgreater accuracy
Dr.WilliamMorganwouldfollow between1959and1963andbecamea respectedfigureforhisworkinunderstandingthestructureofgalaxies. He wasabletodeterminethattheMilky Waygalaxyisitselfaspiralgalaxy, witharmsofstars,gas,anddustcurlingfortensofthousandsoflightyears aroundthegalaxy’scentralcore. Dr. HarlanSmithwouldbetheobservatory’slongestservingdirector,takingthe reinsin1963. Heopenedanewera fortheobservatorybygainingthe fundstobuildanew2.7-metertelescopein1963,completein1968ata costof$5million(orabout$45.6millionin2025dollars). Thetelescope’s mainmirrorweighsnearlyfour tons. Heserveduntil1989. Thetelescopewaslaternamedinhishonor. Theobservatorywouldcontinueto developnewinstrumentsandexperimentstoobservetheuniverse. This includedaseriesofradiotelescopes thatlistenedtoradiowavesfromthe starsthatoperatedfrom1968untilit wasdismantledin1989. TheMcDonaldLaserRangingSystemoperatedat theobservatorybetween1982and 2019formeasurementsonsatellite orbitsandtheMoon’sgeologicfeatures.
TheHobby-EberlyTelescopewas completedin1994onMt. Fowlkes. With91mirrorsegments,it is11metersindiameter,makingitone ofthelargestintheworld. Itiscurrentlyusedasapartofasurveyofdark energy. Itisoneoffivemainoptical telescopescurrentlyinuseattheobservatory.
Today,theMcDonaldObservatory continuestofunctionasanimportant centerofresearchforastronomers aroundtheworld. Regulartoursare providedforthepublicattheFrank BashVisitorCenter,namedforanother respectedpriordirector. Theobservatoryalsohostsstarpartiesforvisitors togazethenightskieswiththeprofessionalastronomers,offeringthechance tolookthroughthelargestscopes whennotinuse. TheStateofTexasnamedtheobservatoryahistoricsite in1968.
Dowereallywant spiritualmaturity? Asamessengerwhopresentstheword ofGod,it’san honortoserve. Mygoalin communicatingistoask theLordwhat Hewantsme tosayandto usemetodo Hiswill.For thoseofyou whoarededicatedChristiansthatlove JesusandfollowHim,I’msureyou alsoprayforthiseveryday.Ibelieve thatweshouldbealighthousefilled withGod’sloveandallthefruitsof HisSpirit,however,thisdoesnot meanweshouldbeafraidorintimidatedtospeakthetruthnomatterhow uncomfortableorunpopular.Weall enjoyinspiringstoriesandencouragingmessages,butthereismoretospiritualmaturitythanjustselectingcontentthatmakesusfeelsgood.There needstobeanunderstandingthatseekingGod’struthincludesabalanceof faithtoacceptallofHiscommands simplybecauseweloveHim.
IntherealmofBiblicalinstruction,we havethecharismaticfierystylethat boldlyaddressestheconsequencesof disobeyingGod,whilethemoremodernmethodscalmlyteachBiblestories thatreflectsituationswithinoureverydaylives.Withlisteningtoalltypesof expository,textual,andtopicalpreachingthroughtheyears,Ibelievewe needallofit.Tome,what’sbeingsaid ismorevaluablethanhowitisdelivered.Iwillagreethatagiftedoratoris muchmoreinterestingtolistento, howeverit’swhatwecangleanfrom themessageandapplytoourlivesthat ismostimportant.
AtruemessengerofGodcanserve chocolatecakeifthatiswhatGodhas placedontheirheart,buttheyshould alsonotavoidservingbroccolibecausetheyfearrejectionfromthose whomightbeoffended.It’snecessary forthefollowerofChristtoremember thatwehavearesponsibilitytorelay themessageaswehavehearditthe sameasthewritersoftheBiblerecordedwhattheyheardtheHolySpirit speak.Ifwemakeknownourown thoughts,itwillnothavetheanointing toconvictthemindsandsoulsofthe listener,butifwearedeterminedto obeyGod’svoice,Hislife-changing wordswillnotreturnvoidasHisperfectintentionswillbeaccomplished. WeareremindedthatHiswordsare justsoundsandscribblesunlesswe allowthemtotransformusintoHis image.WilliamLawisquoted,“Read whateverchapterofscriptureyouwill, andbeeversodelightedwithit,yetit willleaveyouaspoor,asemptyand unchangedasitfoundyouunlessithas turnedyouwhollyandsolelytothe SpiritofGod,andbroughtyouinto fullunionwithanddependenceupon him.”
I’venoticedovertheyearsthatifan individualisnotaserioustruthseeker, theyarenotasenthusiasticabout
learningandgenerallydonotreally careaboutreadingorevenlistening. Forexample,ifaChristiangoesto churchwithoutanotebookandpen, theyarenotdesperatelyconcerned aboutrememberingwhattheyare abouttohear.Sinceit’sbeenproven theaveragepersonmayberetainsmaybefivepercentofaspeech,obviously theyarealrightwiththis.Whencollege studentsattendlecturesbytheirprofessors,doyouthinktheyrecordandtake asmanynotesaspossible?Ofcourse. Amajorreasonweattendchurchisto learnanddevelopourspiritualunderstandingasthisishowknowledgeand wisdomnotonlyincreasesourintelligence,butalsogivesusthematurity andabilitytoteachothers.Second Timothy2:15isnotanoption,“Study topresentthyselfapproveduntoGod, aworkmanthatneedethnottobe ashamed,rightlydividingthewordof truth.”
IconcludethatalackofinterestinBiblicalinstructionrevealsalukewarm attitudetowardGodandouraccountabilitytoknowandobeyHim.Wehave noproblemstayingbusywiththings wewanttodo,butcouldthesebeintentionaldistractionsinordertolivein denialofwhatweneedtobedoing? Havewenotlearnedthatourflesh avoidsthethoughtofself-examination andrepentance,andwouldmuchratherliveindeceptionthansubmitto Hisconviction?Satandoesnotcare whatwedo,aslongaswecontinueto liveinaself-inducedcomfortablecomaofspiritualslumber.Inthislate hour,thesoberingtruthisthereisonly oneobjectiveforthebeliever,andthat istolaydownouragendaanddoeverythingexactlyasHesays.
