Band Continued from page 1 building things so that's nice "
A sense of a renewed enthusiams has crept into the program, says Band President Mikayla Doty
"There are a lot of freshmen this year, so that brings a newness and there's more excitement in the air. There's a lot of unknowns There are people that you can work with and make new things happen, whereas before it was the same people doing the same thing."
The football team experiences twoa-days, but the band program actually schedules three-a-days to begin their season. They went 9 am - noon, 1 pm - 4 pm, and 6 pm - 9 pm last week
"We're seeing a lot of good things and our leaders are phenomenal said Band Director Angie Liss "They are taking care of things which has made it a lot easier on us as directors We can concentrate on the band stuff "

The program this year will be called "Stained Glass" which is in the classic style with a song called, "Sanctuary" - a contemporary piece The program is also based on some old hymn tunes such as Beethoven's "9th Ode to Joy" which is the same as "Joyful Joyful" in the faith community It will have a "Sister Act" flavor to it
"I think our crowd is going to like it," said Liss "Its got a little bit of the classical thing that we always try to do We'll have beautiful props that are being manufactured right now to be stained glass windows
Liss is hesitant to use the term "state year" due to superstition, instead prefers "advancement year"
"Since we got sent home last time, there's a lot of kids here that knows what it feels like," said Liss "You kind of run in cycles and there for a while we didn't go for a couple of cycles and then we went for three cycles in a row In 2015, we were so so close that these kids don't want to miss it again "
Longtime Band Directors Elmer Schenk and Mike Marsh are helping in the afternoons for a couple of hours
Liss says that the band will have the typical 75 band members when adding the eighth graders
"We're still a little smaller than the Van Alstynes and the Whitesboros of the world, but we just don't have as many students as they do," said Liss "It's a numbers game "
It won't be long before "The Pride of Howe" will be marching on the field on Friday nights displaying their new "Stained Glass" theme with Hawaiian shirts and crazy socks a thing of the past The freshman class may be wide-eyed, but their starry gazes into the bright Friday night lights have inspired the juniors and seniors to accomplish a fourth state "advancement" championship
