Southern California builder combines automotive aesthetics with golf cart function in a one-of-a-kind creation
For most enthusiasts, the worlds of classic car restoration and golf cart customization remain distinctly separate. Matt Townsend of Southern California is bridging that gap with a build that seamlessly blends automotive styling with golf cart practicality. His custom-stretched EZGO TXT featuring a 1940s Ford-inspired front end and full air ride suspension demonstrates what happens when car culture meets cart culture.
The journey began when Townsend discovered Baby Riggs LLC, a North Carolina-based company
that produces a 40s Ford-style front end for golf carts. Before making any purchase, Townsend had one critical question: would it accommodate his vision for an air ride suspension?
"I emailed him and asked what the interior height was and what kind of rim I could tuck under it," Townsend recalls. "He emailed me back and said, 'You can get 19 inches under it.' I knew for sure it was going to be a good candidate for the airbags."
This front end became the centerpiece of the build, dictating the aesthetic direction for the entire project. Townsend enhanced it with modified headlights from a 197478 Chevelle, with the orange rings tinted for a cleaner look, and added amber chicken lights for running lights at the bottom.
Building on an EZGO TXT platform, Townsend didn't just add a retro front end—he completely reimagined the cart's proportions by stretching it to 103 inches overall. This modification provides approximately 8 inches of additional legroom in the rear and 6 more inches up front, creating a more comfortable experience for passengers.
Custom 14-gauge steel rocker panels were fabricated with a 10-foot brake to clean up the look and provide a seamless transition between the body and frame. The attention to detail extends to the rear, where the gooseneck hitch ball appears to float on top of the wood bed, while underneath, the structure is completely plated out with quarter-inch triangulated braces between the frame rails for serious towing capability.
The cart's distinctive patina finish didn't happen by accident. "I just went down the YouTube wormhole, kind of figured out how to make patina," Townsend says of the army green base with satin clear coat. This weathered look complements the classic front end without requiring the expense of a full custom paint job.
The engineering centerpiece of this build is its sophisticated air ride suspension system. Townsend, who has built five similar carts, has refined his approach to create a system that delivers both dramatic looks and practical performance.
"I've really figured out a lot of the quirks of geometry with golf carts," he explains. "This one I was really focused on riding it low, but not losing the creature comforts of ride quality, steering quality, stuff like that."
The system includes Firestone 3500 airbags with a unique shock mounting solution. Due to space constraints after narrowing the axles by 8 inches front and rear, Townsend had to get creative with shock placement. The result is an external shock system where 1998-2004 Isuzu Rodeo shocks are mounted to 12-inch bars that extend from the rear of the cart.
"As the axle cycles from its laid out point, as it cycles up the 12 inches, the shock will push dead forward from here
extending out this way, which spins this down and allows the axle to run vertical as the shock runs horizontal," Townsend explains on a recent episode of GolfCartingTV (https://youtu. be/UGwGdvonWAQ?si=dlwO4iDKDFjhmmnk).
This engineering solution allows for 11 inches of lift in the rear and 8.5 inches in the front—enough to get the cart in and out of any toy hauler or navigate any ramp, while still allowing it to lay frame when parked.
While aesthetics were clearly a priority, Townsend didn't neglect performance. The cart features a Club Car rear end and controller paired with an EZGO TXT front end. Golf Carts Modified's 39000 harness bypasses the factory OBC, simplifying the wiring to about eight connections.
"It has a 500 amp controller. The reason I did that is it's built to
tow," Townsend notes. "It needs the torque, it needs the speed. It's not the fastest cart in the world, but it gets the job done, pulling-wise."
The reference to towing isn't just theoretical—the cart features a standard gooseneck two and 5/8 ball hitch with full quarter-inch triangulated braces between the frame rails, similar to what you'd find on a one-ton truck. With the Firestone 3500 bags, Townsend estimates the cart could tow 1,200 to 1,500 pounds.
To complete the RestoMod look, Townsend selected 12-inch SS Godfather wheels—a style typically seen on classic car builds. "With the 40's style front end, this is the typical wheel you'd see at a car show," he explains. "I want to keep the flow of the vehicle styling with the body of the truck. And these rims, in my opinion, they just match perfectly."
Interior comforts include a custom pod built to accommodate the larger TXT seat, a 12-inch Rockville bass tube with its own amplifier, and a sound bar in the rear. All cables are neatly routed through the factory housing for a clean installation. The standard aftermarket EZGO TXT dash with carbon fiber appearance was retained for simplicity, featuring air gauges, battery meter, and forward/reverse switches.
Unlike many builders who create carts on commission, Townsend approaches his projects purely as a creative outlet. "For a hobby, I don't really want to do something that everybody else wants. I just kind of want to wake up with an idea and go my own way," he shares.
This freedom allows him to push boundaries and create truly unique builds without compromise. While he occasionally builds carts for locals upon request, his primary motivation remains personal satisfaction and creative expression.
"Hopefully it motivates somebody else to do something better and we can all kind of chase each other, seeing who can go bigger, badder, faster and lower," Townsend says with enthusiasm.
For those inspired by this blend of automotive styling and golf cart engineering, Townsend's creation demonstrates what's possible when traditional boundaries between vehicle types are challenged. It's not just a golf cart with car parts bolted on—it's a cohesive design that respects both worlds while creating something entirely new.

TThe days of relying solely on golf cart sales and basic service for dealership profitability are numbered. Today's most successful dealers understand that the initial sale is just the beginning of a customer relationship that can generate revenue for years to come. Smart dealers are diversifying their income streams through strategic add-ons, services, and programs that boost margins while strengthening customer loyalty.
The challenge isn't identifying these opportunities – most dealers already know about warranties, rentals, and accessory sales. The challenge is implementing these revenue streams systematically and positioning them as genuine value rather than pushy add-ons.
Extended warranties represent one of the most underutilized profit opportunities in the golf cart industry. The psychology behind warranty sales is straightforward: customers want peace of mind. When someone invests in a golf cart, they're buying reliability and freedom. An extended warranty protects that investment and eliminates the anxiety of unexpected repair costs.
The key to successful warranty sales lies in timing and presentation. Don't wait until the end of the sales process to mention warranties. Instead, weave warranty discussions throughout your sales conversation, positioning coverage as a natural part of cart ownership.
Consider offering tiered warranty options that address different customer needs and budgets. A basic powertrain warranty appeals to budget-conscious buyers, while comprehensive coverage attracts customers who want maximum protection.
Train your sales team to explain warranties in terms of customer benefits. Instead of saying "Would you like to add a warranty for $600?" try "Let me show you how we can protect your investment
and keep you on the road worry-free." This subtle shift transforms warranties from sales pitches into customer solutions.
Rental programs offer dual benefits: additional revenue from existing inventory and exposure to potential buyers who might not have considered purchasing. However, successful rental programs require careful planning.
Start by identifying your target rental market. Are you serving tourists, providing short-term solutions for special events, or filling gaps for customers whose carts are in service? Each market requires different inventory, pricing, and operational approaches.
Choose your rental inventory strategically. Basic, reliable carts work better than heavily customized vehicles. Focus on models that are easy to maintain, have readily available parts, and can withstand frequent use by different operators.
Pricing requires balancing profitability with market demand. Research local competition, but remember that lowest price doesn't always win. Customers often pay more for convenience, reliability, and service quality. Factor in maintenance costs, insurance, storage, and administrative time when setting rates.
Establish clear rental policies that protect both your business and customers. Address damage responsibility, usage restrictions, and return conditions upfront. Well-defined policies prevent misunderstandings and conflicts.
The accessories market represents significant untapped revenue for most dealerships. Customers who invest in golf carts are often willing to invest in products that enhance their ownership experience, but only if those products are presented as valuable
solutions.
Successful accessory sales start with understanding customer lifestyles and usage patterns. A customer buying a cart for gated community use has different needs than someone purchasing for hunting or beach access. Listen to how customers plan to use their carts, then recommend accessories that enhance those specific applications.
Create natural product bundles that solve complete problems rather than selling individual accessories in isolation. A "golf package" might include ball washers, scorecard holders, and cooler attachments. A "utility package" could combine cargo boxes, tiedown points, and work lights. Bundling increases transaction size while providing comprehensive solutions.
Display accessories strategically throughout your showroom. Show accessories installed on actual carts so customers can visualize how products look and function. Create lifestyle displays that demonstrate how accessories solve real problems.
Consider stocking consumable items that create recurring revenue opportunities. Batteries, tires, cleaning products, and replacement parts generate ongoing customer interactions. While individual transactions might be smaller, the cumulative effect over time can be substantial.
Successfully adding new revenue streams requires systematic implementation and staff training. These opportunities don't generate revenue automatically – they require deliberate effort and consistent execution.
Start with staff education. Your team needs to understand the financial benefits of these programs for both the dealership and customers. Develop standardized processes for each revenue
stream and track performance metrics to identify improvement opportunities.
Price these services appropriately. Don't compete solely on price – compete on value, convenience, and service quality. Customers who choose dealers based only on lowest price rarely become profitable long-term relationships.
Use these additional services to create more customer touchpoints throughout the ownership lifecycle. Warranty service calls become opportunities to discuss upgrades or accessories. Rental customers receive exposure to your service quality and product knowledge.
Dealers who successfully implement multiple revenue streams create significant competitive advantages. They're less dependent on new cart sales, more resistant to economic downturns, and better positioned to invest in customer service improvements.
Revenue diversification isn't about selling customers things they don't need – it's about providing comprehensive solutions that enhance their golf cart ownership experience. When implemented thoughtfully, these additional revenue streams create win-win scenarios that benefit both dealers and customers while building sustainable business growth.

In our continuing series exploring America's premier golf cart communities, we discover On Top of the World in Ocala, Florida - a pioneering active adult development where golf carts serve as the backbone of an expansive lifestyle
Sprawling across 13,000 acres of central Florida countryside, On Top of the World isn't just another retirement community—it's a meticulously designed small city where golf carts have become essential to the vibrant lifestyle enjoyed by more than 12,000 residents. Founded in 1947 and developed in Ocala starting in 1975, this family-owned community has created an environment where golf carts transcend mere convenience to become integral to the social fabric connecting neighbors across its vast landscape.
What immediately sets On Top of the World apart is its comprehensive network of dedicated golf cart paths that thoughtfully link residential neighborhoods with key community amenities. While many communities retrofit cart infrastructure as secondary features, On Top of the World made cart accessibility a cornerstone of its original master plan. These pathways establish a well-designed transportation
framework that enables residents to reach virtually any destination within the developed portions of the property without the need for automobiles. The careful planning extends to dedicated golf cart parking areas at virtually every amenity and facility, ensuring residents can easily access everything from the post office to social events without the hassles of conventional transportation. This thoughtful design makes golf carts not just an option but often the preferred choice for daily activities.
The sheer scale of recreational opportunities at On Top of the World would be overwhelming without the convenience of golf cart transportation. The community boasts:
• Three championship golf courses (The Tortoise & The Hare, The Links, and Candler Hills)
• Nine swimming pools across multiple recreation centers
• Twenty-nine pickleball courts
• Extensive fitness centers with specialized programs
• Over 21 miles of walking and hiking trails
• A working cattle ranch accessible to residents
• Multiple restaurants and entertainment venues
The 930-seat Circle Square Cultural Center exemplifies how
golf carts enhance lifestyle access, hosting everything from concerts to comedy shows just a short cart ride from any home in the community. "No parking hassles, no long walks," is how many residents describe the convenience.
This transportation system fundamentally changes how residents engage with amenities. The community's multiple recreation centers—including the main center and the stateof-the-art Arbor Fitness Center with its indoor walking track— become easily accessible regardless of the residents’ location within the vast property.
Beyond practical transportation, golf carts at On Top of the World function as social enablers, breaking down the isolation that large-scale communities might otherwise experience.
"In a community this size, golf carts aren't a luxury, they're a necessity that transforms how residents experience the neighborhood," explains Matt White of GolfCartingTV in a recent episode of Golf Cart Chronicles (https://youtu. be/B36JX4yvGs0). "From sunrise fitness classes to sunset entertainment, these vehicles ensure that distance never limits participation."
The impact is perhaps most evident in the community's thriving social scene. With over 175 resident clubs and social organizations, participation levels remain high precisely because transportation barriers have been eliminated. Whether joining friends for pickleball, attending
a woodworking class in the hobby building, or meeting neighbors at one of the many restaurants, the golf cart provides the connective tissue that binds the community together.
On Top of the World's marketing tagline—"Where the Cool Kids Retire"—reflects the active, engaged lifestyle that golf cart transportation helps facilitate. Rather than limiting mobility as residents age, the community's design amplifies it.
The Master the Possibilities Education Center offers over 900 different classes annually, with golf cart accessibility ensuring that lifelong learning remains convenient for all residents. The community's innovative approach to active adult living centers on education, with courses ranging from technology and art to health, academics, and legal topics.
"The best days of your life are yet to come at On Top of the World!" community materials proclaim. Golf carts play no small part in delivering on this promise, enabling residents to conveniently maximize their engagement with all the community offers.
As one of Florida's oldest privately owned land developers, On Top of the World has had decades to refine its approach to golf cart integration. Founded by Sidney Colen and now led by his son Kenneth, the company's experience shows in the seamless
way golf carts have been incorporated into the community's design and culture.
"Utilizing superior construction methods, we build energy-efficient homes," the company notes, highlighting a commitment to quality that extends to infrastructure. This same attention to detail is evident in the thoughtfully planned golf cart paths, crossing points, and parking areas throughout the property.

Q: I have decided on changing over to lithium. How do I do the conversion from lead acids?
A: Converting over to lithium is a fairly straightforward process which varies from each manufacturer of cart. In this install, you may have to modify the battery tray a bit but in general most lithium batteries can fit without any cutting.
Depending on the manufacturer, you may have to lift trim panels to access areas to run the cable, on Club Car Precedents for instance. On E-Z-GO, on the other hand, you can simply run the state of charge cable down the frame rail.
Let’s begin by putting the cart in TOW mode and removing the lead acid batteries making sure you clean the tray well once removed. Take note and label any wiring especially positive and negative cables for reinstallation. You will not be retaining any of the old battery cables. You will only be reinstalling the main positive and negative cable to the lithium battery.
Mount the battery into the tray to where the cables can reach and secure the battery to the tray. If you currently have a portable charger and plan to be using an onboard version now, you will need to remove your charge port to replace it with a new style receptacle. For example, on E-Z-GO's you will need to drill out the rivets in the charge port. On Club Car Precedents, you must lift the body up to access the bolts under the floor mat in order to remove the charging receptacle trim. After the old port is out go ahead and install the new one paying attention to any extra wire in the form of a charger interlock wire which disables the cart when it's plugged in. Even though this is an important safety feature, most of the time, you will need to bypass this by running this wire to the positive side of the battery. Some battery companies have this safety feature now built into the charger so this wire is
run there now instead. On Club Cars, you may have to bypass the OBC which controls the charge in the cart. This however is another topic you may have to look up online to get a full understanding how to do it properly as it involves cutting and splicing wires together.
Next, after the battery and the charging port/charger is mounted, next comes running the cable up to the dash for your state of charge meter. Again, all carts are different to how this cable can be run. On E-Z-GO's, you can run it along the frame rail and up to the dash. On Club Cars, you can lift the floor mat up while you have the bottom trim piece removed to change the receptacle over to run the cable in the groove embedded into the floor. After running the cable to the desired location of where you plan to mount the meter, you should use a 2 1/16" hole saw to cut out a hole to recess the gauge into the dash. Some people opt for a gauge mount instead versus having to cut into their dash. It's just personal preference but just make sure you like the placement before you make that hole in your dash!
After the gauge is mounted, it's time to install a voltage reducer if you have 12 volt accessories like headlights or a radio. For that you will run two of the main wires to the battery for pack voltage and two more to your accessory. Most reducers have a fifth wire which connects to your key switch for it to shut off when the key is off.
After everything is said and done now it's time to clean up your wiring making sure nothing is pinched or has loose connections. Visually inspect your main cables for corrosion and replace them if necessary.
Double check all your connections, put the cart back in RUN and enjoy the longer run time, quicker charges, and better performance for many years to come!
