“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” – Elf
December in Bahrain always arrives with a sense of warmth, even as the weather cools. This is my absolute favourite time of year – festive cheer is everywhere and there is no shortage of ways to enjoy the season.
This month, we embrace the holiday spirit in our cover story, bringing you everything from tree-lightings and gingerbread-decorating to scrumptious Christmas dining offers and His & Hers gift guides. Adding to the cheer, we’re launching our annual fact’s Festive Giveaways, a special treat for our readers throughout the month, with daily prizes to be won on Instagram. The month also marks the 54th Bahrain National Day, with celebrations taking place across the island. And as the year winds down, we’ve rounded up some of the hottest New Year’s Eve parties around town. There’s plenty happening on the events front. Festive fairs and markets are back, South African singing sensation Tyla hits our shores and the Kingdom hosts the first Bahrain Coffee Festival. The Farmers’ Market returns for its 13th edition and fans of the Darts Masters can get a head start with news of its 2026 return and early bird tickets.
Last month also saw us celebrate the 16th Fact Dining Awards, where the island’s hospitality community came together for a spectacular night of appreciation – check out the winners and the vibes in our special feature.
Continuing the food theme, we’ve been busy tasting the season’s best, from French flavours at the new La Terrace at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain and a Greek brunch at OPA Bahrain to a traditional Bahraini breakfast at Al Sedra.
Our motoring pages thrill as we get behind the wheel of the revived Passat Highline 2.0L and bring you news of new showroom openings and the latest car launches. For motor enthusiasts who missed last month’s action, check out our Listen Up pages for the recap of Bahrain’s first-ever Royal Concours.
In Arts and Culture, we chat with singer-songwriter Byron Gindra, and in Travel, we roundup Europe’s coolest ski spots to inspire your winter escape. And, as always, we keep you on trend with the latest in fashion, beauty, tech and entertainment.
Here’s to a month filled with good food, great company and everything that makes December special. Happy Holidays!
Bye for now…

A spectacular one-two finish at the Bapco Energies 8 Hours of Bahrain season finale ensured TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) concluded the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season on a high note.
In an incredible show of engineering excellence, TGR came tops at the WEC season finish, setting the track ablaze with a winning performance. Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries delivered a strong performance in the No. 7 Toyota GR010 Hypercar, converting pole position into victory and securing the team’s ninth consecutive win at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC). Teammates Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa in the No. 8 Toyota GR010 Hypercar completed the perfect result in second place, finishing just 19.378 seconds behind the No.7 crew.
The victory marked a strong end to a challenging season and builds momentum heading into 2026. TGR will return next year with an updated Toyota GR010 Hypercar and an unchanged driver lineup. Mike, Kamui and Nyck will race together for the third consecutive season, while Sébastien, Brendon and Ryo compete alongside each other for a fifth year.
“This result reflects the dedication and competitive spirit that define Toyota’s journey,” said Ebrahim K. Kanoo Director, Isa Mohammed Kanoo. “The team’s consistency, innovation and resilience throughout the season demonstrate what can be achieved when engineering excellence meets a passion for performance. We look forward to the Toyota team achieving an even stronger result in 2026.”
Adding excitement to the experience was the Toyota Fanzone, which gave spectators a dedicated space to celebrate the
spirit of motorsport. The area featured interactive activities, such as a VR experience and competitions with cash prizes, as well as themed displays, as visitors enjoyed a lively atmosphere with music, games and branded experiences that highlighted Toyota’s passion for racing.
Over the years, Toyota has participated in many different forms of motorsports, including Formula One, World Rally Championship (WRC), the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race. Toyota’s participation in these events was overseen by separate entities within the company until April 2015, when Toyota established TGR, to consolidate all its motorsports activities under one in-house brand.
Representing Toyota’s belief that ‘the roads build the people, and the people build the cars’, TGR highlights the role of motorsports as a fundamental pillar of Toyota’s commitment to ‘making ever-better cars’. Harnessing years of experience gained under the extreme conditions of various motorsports events, TGR aims to forge new technologies and solutions that bring the freedom, adventure and joy of driving to everyone. ✤

The event brings together local and international experts, brands and enthusiasts to celebrate coffee culture, innovation and creativity.
Organised by DXB LIVE in collaboration with the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI), the Bahrain Tourism & Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) and Exhibition World Bahrain (EWB), the festival marks a significant milestone as the Kingdom’s first dedicated coffee event. It also reinforces Bahrain’s growing reputation as a regional hub for cultural and lifestyle events by fostering business partnerships, building community engagement and showcasing the Kingdom’s hospitality and creativity on the global stage. Over five days, visitors are invited to experience Bahrain’s vibrant and fast-growing coffee scene through workshops, live competitions, sensory experiences and networking opportunities. More than 100 brands will exhibit this year, including well-known regional roasters and international names, alongside equipment suppliers and technology partners showcasing new machines, tools and brewing innovations.
Visitors can expect a full schedule, with competitions such as the Latte Art Throwdown, Cup Tasters Challenge,
Home Brewer Challenge, Fastest Barista Race and the Best Coffee with Milk contest. A series of 25 educational and practical workshops will cover everything from V60 brewing, Pourover techniques and AeroPress brew class to barista basics, roasting fundamentals, coffee cupping and introductions to speciality coffee. Advanced classes will also look at branding, packaging, opening a coffee shop in Bahrain and caring for espresso machines – useful for anyone thinking about stepping into the business.
The festival builds on coffee’s cultural roots through Traditional Arabic Coffee Protocol demonstrations, coffee and dessert pairings, live coffee art, the Mini Coffee Museum and additional experiences such as Coffee Around the World, The Future of Coffee and Sustainability, Coffee Documentary Screenings and The Coffee & Music Lounge. Attendees will also enjoy live music and food kiosks, creating a community atmosphere for families, enthusiasts and professionals alike.

The popular Bahrain Darts Masters will be back early next year with a fresh venue, global stars and limitedtime Early Bird pricing, setting the stage for one of the island’s biggest sporting gatherings.
The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) and sports promoter CBX have opened ticket sales for the 2026 Bahrain Darts Masters, confirmed for January 15 to 16. Supported by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), the event debuted three years ago and has quickly become a landmark fixture in Bahrain’s sporting calendar.
Organised by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), next year’s edition will be the first major event following the 2025/26 World Darts Championship and will kick-off the 2026 World Series of Darts. The event will feature eight leading stars from the global darts circuit, alongside regional and local talent.
Building on last year’s sell-out, 2026 will be even bigger as the event moves to Exhibition World Bahrain. The space will be transformed to evoke the spirit of London’s iconic Alexandra Palace. Fans can expect an incredible atmosphere, with fancy dress, themed activations and a wide range of food and beverage options, as ‘Sports’ Biggest Party’ brings its unique flavour to Bahrain.
Sarah Buheji, Chief Executive Officer of BTEA, said: “Hosting an event of this scale each year is a boost for our tourism sector and supports our ambition to position the Kingdom as a leading sports tourism destination. It shows a glimpse of what the Kingdom of Bahrain can offer, and we look forward to welcoming even more visitors as the event continues to grow.”
BIC Chief Executive Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa added: “The Bahrain Darts Masters has been an incredible success since our debut event three years ago. We are committed to hosting the highest level of international sport in Bahrain and we look forward to many more years of hosting this unique fan experience.”
Carlo Boutagy, Founder and CEO of CBX said: “We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the 2026 Bahrain Darts Masters, building on the incredible, sell-out success of 2025. The atmosphere last year was electric, and I’m excited to bring that same energy to a brand-new venue – Exhibition World Bahrain – in 2026.”
Tickets are now on sale online via BIC’s official website, with a limited-time 20% Early Bird discount. Fans can secure a two-day pass in the new Bahrain Darts Masters Grandstand from BD20 (after discount), while premium seating – including stage-side tables – starts from BD40 (after discount) for the full event. Fans are urged to act quickly, as the event is expected to be hugely popular, based on the demand in previous years. ✤

The Kingdom’s first-ever Royal Concours brought together more than 370 collector and club cars, celebrating nearly a century of automotive design in spectacular fashion.

The much-anticipated inaugural Royal Bahrain Concours, which took place last month amid much fanfare at the Royal Golf Club in Riffa, concluded with a triumph befitting its name. Held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, this was not just another car show. The two-day celebration of automotive excellence brought together over 70 of the world's rarest and most significant automobiles, all set against the stunning backdrop of Colin Montgomerie's championship golf course.
Among an extraordinary gathering that included pre-war masterpieces, legendary race cars and cutting-edge hypercars, one machine captured the hearts of fellow collectors. The 1972 Lamborghini Miura SV ‘Shah of Iran’, chassis 4870, was awarded Best of Show.
This car has a story few can match. It was originally ordered new in 1971 through the Iranian Embassy in Rome for Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the final Shah of Iran. It is an exceptionally rare example, one of only 147 SVs ever built, finished in Bleu Ischia Metallizzato with white leather and air conditioning. After the 1979 Revolution, the car disappeared for 12 years. It reappeared in Italy, where it was restored in the 1990s, winning 'Best Miura' at the 1993 Lamborghini Days. It was purchased by its current owner, Dr Khalid M. Abdulrahim of Bahrain, in 2009.
The Royal Bahrain Concours offered far more than exceptional machinery. Over the weekend of November 7 and 8, more than 60 additional collector cars joined 300 club vehicles from across the GCC, transforming the Royal Golf Club into the region's premier automotive gathering. Guests enjoyed gourmet dining, luxury boutiques and live entertainment, getting the chance to witness everything from a 1913 Clément-Bayard to the latest Mercedes-AMG One hypercar. Honouring excellence across the full spectrum of concours classes, owners judged their peers across each category, creating a uniquely inclusive atmosphere.
The Crown Prince Award went to a 2008 Ferrari Zagato Nibbio, owned by HRH Prince Faisal A. Al Faisal from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This is a modern masterpiece of Italian coachbuilding, a bespoke reinterpretation of Ferrari's 599 GTB Fiorano. Commissioned in an ultralimited series of just six examples, each was individually handcrafted at Zagato's Milan atelier. It uses the 599's aluminium space frame chassis and a 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine producing 611hp, capable of 0-100km/h in just over 3.5 seconds.
Another highlight was the Modern Classics winner: the 2006 Pagani Zonda F Clubsport, owned by HRH Prince
Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. This car, one of only 25 coupés made, was hand-built in Modena. It features a naturally aspirated 7.3-litre Mercedes-AMG V12, producing 650hp through a six-speed manual gearbox and weighs 1,230kg. In 2008, it set a Nürburgring lap record, becoming the fastest production car at the time.
The Hypercars award went to the 2025 Mercedes-AMG One, owned by HRH Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal Al Saud. This is Formula One technology adapted for the road, and one of just 275 built worldwide. Not to be outdone, the Supercars award went to a 2006 Porsche Carrera GT, owned by Abdullah Alibrahim of Saudi Arabia. It represents Porsche's analogue engineering pinnacle with a 5.7-litre V10 engine derived from Le Mans technology, producing 612hp, revving beyond 8,000rpm.
The event showcased an amazing range. The European Classics winner was a 1988 Lamborghini LM002, owned by Adel Rajab of Saudi Arabia. The ‘Rambo Lambo’ redefined off-road vehicles by using the Countach QV's 5.2-litre V12.
Capable of 210km/h and limited to just over 300 examples, it's seen as a spiritual forefather to modern performance SUVs.
The British Classics was won by the 1988 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante ‘Prince of Wales’, owned by Dr Jörg Wolle from Switzerland. Chassis 15746 is one of just 22 ‘Prince of Wales’ cars built, born from HRH The Prince of Wales's request for Vantage power without flared arches.
The 5.3-litre V8 was later upgraded to 7.0 litres, restored to factory Balmoral Green over tan leather and frequently rallied across Europe.
The Sports & Race Classics winner, a 1959 Ferrari 250 TR owned by Michael and Barbara Malone from the US, has a serious racing pedigree. Chassis 0606 began life as a 1956 Ferrari 290 MM and was later upgraded to a 3-litre V12 Testa Rossa and re-bodied by Scaglietti. It raced for Scuderia Ferrari and Equipe Nationale Belge before racing in Brazil until 1962. It underwent a multi-year restoration to return it to its exact 250 Testa Rossa specification.
The Flat Tops class was won by the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss, owned by Dr Adel Esmat Quttainah from Kuwait. This ultra rare speedster pays homage to the 1955 SLR racers with a roofless, windscreen-free design. Its supercharged V8 produces 650hp and accelerates 0-100km/h in under 3.5 seconds, reaching 354km/h. Only 75 units were produced exclusively for existing SLR owners. American innovation was well represented across the decades. Winning the American Class was the 1955 Lincoln Indianapolis, a futuristic one-off coupe with ‘jet age’ aesthetics, owned by Fritz Burkard. Powered by a 5.5-litre V8, it was completed in five months, reportedly purchased by Henry Ford II and is now part of the Pearl Collection in Switzerland. The Steering Committee Award went to a 1930 Cord L-29 Roadster, owned by Gautam Hari Singhania from India, restored in 1992 using only period-correct components. Powered by a 298-cubic-inch straight-eight with front-wheel drive, the L-29 is noted for its innovative drivetrain and low stance. Meanwhile, the AirX Award

was won by a 1963 Shelby Cobra, owned by Malcolm and Christina Welford from the US, which impressed as a very early production chassis (CSX 2055) retaining rare, distinctive details from its first build.
For those who appreciate older history, the 1937 RollsRoyce Phantom III, owned by Saad Mohammad Awad Binladen of Saudi Arabia, won the Pre-1940 class. This was the final model overseen by Henry Royce and the first Rolls-Royce V12. Its 7.3-litre V12 delivered near silent performance. Each was hand-built, with only 727 produced before WWII.
Special Feature Class awards also recognised emerging collectors, with a Porsche 911 SC winning the 30 Under 30 category. Engineering innovation was celebrated with a 1951 Ford F-1 winning the Restomod/Modified class and a Range Rover L322 Six-Wheeler taking the 4x4 Award.
The inaugural Royal Bahrain Concours, organised by Thorough Events in collaboration with the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), was a huge success, showcasing nearly a century of design and performance and establishing itself as Bahrain’s premier celebration of all things automotive. ✤

fact spent time with the newly revived Passat Highline 2.0L – discovering comfort, refinement and confidence in every detail.

Everyone loves a good comeback story – it’s hard not to smile when a familiar favourite returns, ready to reclaim its spotlight. That smile only widened when we walked up to the all-new Volkswagen Passat Highline 2.0L, the model that sets the benchmark for the range. As a team accustomed to test-driving luxury and highperformance models, we were curious: could a trusted business saloon still feel fresh in 2025?
From our first moments with the Passat, it was clear this was a car that had far more to say than simply “I’m back”.
Volkswagen didn’t reintroduce the Passat to blend in. The Highline’s redesigned front end features a floating section tied together by a seamless LED strip, centred by an illuminated VW badge that’s hard to miss. Paired with IQ.Light dual-lens matrix headlights, this saloon adapts its lighting on the move – ideal for evening highway drives, early commutes and the odd unlit backstreet that reminds you why good headlights matter. We enjoyed the welcome-light animation and dynamic indicators on every arrival. With its 19-inch alloys and long, sculpted silhouette, this saloon looks equally at home gliding up to a fivestar hotel valet or pulling up outside a cosy street-side café. At the rear, super-red LED tail lights stretch across the width of the car, emphasising its segment-leading length. It delivers elegance with quiet presence – a gentle nudge that says, “Yes, you may admire me”.
If the exterior hints at comfort, the cabin confirms it. The new Passat is the longest and most spacious version ever built, and you feel that immediately. Leather seating, a panoramic sunroof and 30-colour ambient lighting set the tone, letting you choose everything from calm neutrals to cool blue or warm amber. But the seating is the real headline. Ventilated massage seats in the front and rear, with electric adjustment and soft headrest pillows, bring a level of comfort to daily driving that feels genuinely uplifting. A single recline in the rear massage seat was enough to spark a collective realisation: our living room sofas might be due for replacement.
Practicality is strong too, with 17 storage compartments and a 520-litre boot. Whether it’s family duties, airport runs or a ‘fiveminute’ errand that somehow becomes a full shopping trip, the Passat handles it with ease.
Technology is one of the Highline’s strengths. The 15-inch infotainment display paired perfectly with the 10.25-inch digital cockpit, delivering crisp graphics and menus that didn’t require guesswork. The head-up display added clarity without feeling intrusive.
Wireless charging, front and rear USB ports and a smooth sevenspeaker audio system kept us connected. And while some car systems seem determined to test patience, the Passat kept things simple – no confusing menus, no digital scavenger hunts, just tech that quietly did its job.

On the road, this 2.0L packs the strongest engine in the range, delivering 217hp and 350Nm of torque. Coupled with Volkswagen’s familiar seven-speed DSG transmission, the power delivery stayed smooth and unbothered by traffic. Acceleration felt responsive without being abrupt, and the car maintained a reassuring sense of stability at higher speeds – the composure you expect from well-sorted German engineering.
Refinement was just as clear. Road noise stayed low, gear changes barely noticeable and the overall drive had an easygoing quality that made longer journeys feel shorter. Its charm lay in its steady confidence – more “I’ve got this” than “watch me”.
The Passat Highline came equipped with driver assistance features that added confidence to the experience. Front Assist, Lane Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control all worked quietly in the background, stepping in when needed and staying out of the way when they weren’t. The 360-degree camera and Park Assist made tight manoeuvres less stressful, while rear cross-traffic alert proved handy in car parks when everyone seemed to have the same idea at the same time.
Multiple airbags, ISOFIX anchors and a sturdy structure built around Volkswagen’s safety standards contributed to a sense of security throughout our time with the car.

From our first moments with the Passat, it was clear this was a car that had far more to say than simply ‘I’m back’.”

By the end of our test drive, the Passat Highline 2.0L had made its case clearly. It delivered comfort, refinement and technology in a package that felt genuinely well thought out. From the spacious cabin to the calm, confident drive, it came across as a car designed for people who want ease without sacrificing quality. This business saloon delivered the fullest expression of what the new Passat was meant to be. It carried itself with quiet assurance, offered features we actually used and delivered a driving experience that never felt strained or overcomplicated. In a segment full of options, the Passat stood out by simply doing everything well – by being the saloon that wins you over naturally, without ever resorting to jazz hands. ✤

The all-new Passat and Jetta were launched by Volkswagen Bahrain at a distinguished ceremony held at the Behbehani Brothers premises.

Volkswagen is set to make a powerful statement in the Kingdom’s automotive landscape with the long-awaited return of two icons – the updated Volkswagen Passat and Jetta.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by HE Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro, Minister of Industry and Commerce; HE Henning Simon, German Ambassador to Bahrain; the company’s management and customers.
For decades, the Jetta and Passat have been trusted saloons in the Kingdom, known for their balance of design, practicality and German engineering – which is all about the precision, safety and quality that defines every Volkswagen worldwide. Their return marks a milestone moment for the brand, reintroducing models that have been reimagined to meet the needs of today’s customers while staying true to their legacy.
The all-new Passat sits at the heart of Volkswagen’s saloon story – a car that has sold more than 34 million units worldwide and continues to stand as a symbol of refinement and reliability. As the longest in its segment and the most spacious Passat ever built, it redefines comfort for both drivers and passengers. Among its standout highlights are class-leading rear seats with ventilation, massage and reclining functions, turning every journey into a true business-class experience. Add to this advanced technology, including Matrix LED headlights, a 15-inch infotainment system and the latest safety systems, and the Passat sets a new benchmark for everyday sophistication, reinforcing its role as the new business class in its segment.
Meanwhile, the all-new Jetta has returned with its boldest form
yet. As the largest Jetta ever built, with the longest wheelbase in its class, it offers an interior that is more spacious and versatile than ever before. Yet it remains true to its character as the more compact and agile sibling of the Passat. Combined with a fresh design, advanced safety systems and smart technology features such as digital displays, seamless door handles, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging and adaptive cruise control, the Jetta is designed to bring everyday practicality together with modern style and confidence, continuing the legacy of everyday driving confidence that has defined it for generations.

“Both cars have been reimagined to deliver more space, innovation and the quality that our customers expect. Their comeback marks the beginning of a new chapter for Volkswagen sedans in the region.”
Together, the Passat and Jetta mark Volkswagen’s renewed strength in the saloon segment. Bigger, bolder and packed with innovation, these models embody the brand’s vision of German engineered cars for the people – accessible, intelligent and built with the needs of the region in mind.

The result? Deep cleaning and whitening, all powered by bubbles.
The gadget includes multiple brush heads and cleaning modes to cater to sensitive teeth, whitening and comprehensive care. The toothbrush features seamless body construction that achieves a full IPX7 waterproof rate and the sealed brush-head connection prevents mould growth. Having honed his skills across the globe, the Director of Food & Beverage at InterContinental Bahrain brings over 20 years of experience to the island. He gives us a glimpse of the festive season ahead, funny dining stories and his favourite holiday bites.

You've spent the last decade or so in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. What inspired you to return to the Middle East, and what are your priorities as you settle into your new position?
The Middle East has always been where my passion for hospitality was born, shaped by its warmth, generosity and deeply rooted culture of hospitality. After a first GCC experience in Dubai 16 years ago and later spending many years across Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, I felt it was the right moment to return to the region with a strong exposure of Asia. Joining InterContinental Bahrain has only reinforced my decision, arriving at such an exciting time and with the festive season just around the corner. My priorities are very clear: to elevate our dining experiences, strengthen our culinary identity and ensure every one of our restaurants reflects the warmth and refinement we stand for.
In your experience, what separates a good dining operation from an exceptional one, and how do you aim to bring that to InterContinental Bahrain?
A good dining operation serves great food, while an exceptional one creates emotions. It’s the feeling of being welcomed before you even sit down. The attention to detail in every plate. The seamless transitions between service moments. The ability to anticipate a guest's needs before they even express them.
At InterContinental Bahrain, my focus is on strengthening exactly that – connection, consistency and creativity. Every touchpoint is designed to elevate the guest experience and make this season unforgettable. Exceptional dining is not just about cuisine; it’s about making memories and inspiring incredible experiences –our daily commitment.

With the festive season approaching, what can guests expect this year at InterContinental Bahrain?
This year, InterContinental Bahrain presents a festive programme designed to inspire warmth, delight and unforgettable moments. The season begins with the Tree Lighting Ceremony in the lobby and the Gingerbread & Giggles kids’ activity. Christmas Eve brings two set dinners – Festive Elegance at Legendz and the La Vigilia Seafood Dinner at Medzo – followed by a lively Christmas Day Brunch with gourmet stations, entertainment and a visit from Santa. Guests can also take home our slowroasted turkey, festive cakes and gourmet gift hampers. We welcome 2026 with high-energy New Year’s Eve celebrations, including Electric Carnival and the Epic White Party, and start the year with a refined brunch in the Regency Tent. Overall, the aim is simple: to create genuine, warm and enjoyable moments, however our guests choose to celebrate.
Over your extensive career in hospitality, you must've come across some unusual requests. Can you share one that was exceptionally challenging or humorous?
Memories from my Dubai days always make me laugh, especially the time I was sent to handle a ‘simple’ six-course private dinner on a mid-sized yacht. I expected a smooth, elegant setup but instead ended up in a very compact galley kitchen where every inch mattered. Once the sun set, the sea decided to join the
party. The yacht started swaying and suddenly every course became a full-body workout. I was bracing with my legs, gripping counters for dear life, trying to plate as if I were still in a finedining restaurant – delicate garnishes, precise sauces, multiple components, the whole show. Picture me sliding left and right like a cartoon character, trying to stop a jus from flying off the plate and praying the microgreens stayed put. It was chaotic, hilarious and unexpectedly athletic – fine dining meets CrossFit on the high seas. A true cartoon moment I’ll never forget.
Outside of work, what’s your favourite way to enjoy food – do you have a go-to comfort meal or culinary hobby?
Outside of work, I love enjoying food in a way that’s relaxed, social and full of flavour. I naturally gravitate toward sharingstyle starters with friends and family – cheese boards, crudos, dips, spreads and colourful small plates that feel much like a Mediterranean mezze or Spanish tapas experience. That sense of sharing is as satisfying as the food itself. On weekends, nothing beats a classic roasted chicken with rich dripping jus and perfectly crisp homemade French fries – a nod to the timeless ‘Sunday Chicken’ tradition in France. And during the festive season, my tastes turn to holiday classics: warm winter spices in baked treats, a beautifully prepared Beef Wellington and the quintessential yule log. It’s a truly gourmand time of year, and I enjoy every bit of it. ✤

& Drinks (F&D) Manager, Hilton Bahrain
With F&D experience across both operations and training, what are you most excited to introduce at Hilton Bahrain in your new role?
For me, F&D has always been about people – both our guests and our team. I’m really excited to work closely with the Hilton Bahrain team to create moments that make guests feel genuinely welcome and cared for. That means sharing my experience to help the team grow, giving them the confidence to shine and bringing ideas to make dining here exciting, approachable and memorable. It’s not just about the food or drinks – it’s about the experience we create together.
If you were to recommend one dish and one drink from Hilton Bahrain’s menus, which pairing would you choose and why?
I like simple things, so I’d go for a perfectly grilled steak followed by one of our signature cocktails, simple but thoughtful – a great quality meat and a thoughtfully designed drink to finish, it's like a little celebration in every bite and sip. It’s a combination that really represents what I love about F&D: quality, care and a touch of creativity that leaves a lasting impression.
When you’re off duty, what kind of dining experience do you enjoy most?
I love experiences that feel genuine and relaxed. Whether it’s a casual meal at a local beach spot or a small, lively restaurant in the neighbourhood, I enjoy places where the food is honest, the people are friendly and the atmosphere feels warm. Those are the kinds of experiences that stay with me and inspire me to bring that same feeling to the team and our guests at Hilton Bahrain.

Traversing the culinary world, from a Michelin-starred kitchen to some of the top UK and regional restaurants, James Martin, Executive Chef at Brasero Atlántico Bahrain, can certainly handle the heat. He talks early career, his dream guest and signature dish.

You’ve trained at some of the UK’s most respected kitchens, including time under Heston Blumenthal. What lessons from those early years still hold true for you today?
The biggest lesson I took from my time with Heston Blumenthal was the importance of staying calm under pressure, producing the best possible product for the guest and striving to be better every day. We were always taught to focus on attention to detail, use the best ingredients, stay organised and work as a team under pressure. The worst thing that we could have had was a loud kitchen because that just shows disorganisation, when everyone’s loud and no can be heard from the front when the chef is calling the checks. So, from day one, everything was drummed into us: remain quiet and calm, stay focussed and pay attention to the smallest details. These are the skills I’ve carried with me throughout my career and still apply in the kitchen today.
Having experienced both the UK and Middle East dining scenes, how have the different food cultures influenced the way you develop menus?
Creating the menu for Brasero Atlántico to suit the Bahraini market was remarkably easy. Bahrain’s food scene has grown and become very multicultural over the past eight years. Most locals and expats have travelled widely across Europe and the western part of the United States, so they've already experienced and are familiar with European and Western culture and cuisine, which we’ve been able to bring back to Bahrain. It allows us to
play with the menu and introduce dishes and influences from the West and give guests something they already relate to and enjoy.
Who would be your dream dinner guest (living or dead) and what would you cook for them?
I would love to cook for Marco Pierre White, but the Marco Pierre White from the ‘80s, when he was known as the ‘rockstar chef’. The dish I’d make for him would be pan-seared black cod with fennel and blood orange. It’s a well-balanced dish where every component works together, and it’s the kind of cuisine he would have served on his menu back when he was at Harveys chasing Michelin stars.
What’s your signature dish at Brasero Atlántico and what makes it stand out?
My signature dish at Brasero Atlántico has to be the Jumbo Lump Crab Salad with caviar, cucumber and lemon purée. It’s packed with fresh flavours, which has had a big part to play in the menu revamp. What makes it stand out is the clean, crisp taste and how all the components come together for a vibrant and delightful dish. We use jumbo lump crab here, while back home in the UK I would use Cornish crab – the same flavour profile but using local ingredients. The crab, apple and cucumber work well together and really make the crab flavour stand out, while the citrus cuts through any fat within the dish. It’s then finished with caviar sourced from France. ✤

With the recent opening of La Terrace at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, Fernanda Langhammer headed to this gorgeous new dining venue to explore all it has to offer.

The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain is a well-known destination for its beautiful beach and pool area, good vibes and delectable dining experiences in the heart of the city. With the weather reaching its prime in this part of the world, the property has added a new, charming spot to the long list of eateries on offer: La Terrace. The new space is located on your left after crossing through the revolving door that leads to the pool area. For those who know the space well, it’s just outside La Med. I was surprised by how cool the place looks. It has its own character with a menu that pleases all palates. The décor is edgy, with grey floors, massive black umbrellas and black-and-white chairs with turquoise cushions. My party and I were there during sundown, and it was an enjoyable experience that I believe I haven’t felt in a while. Maybe it was the nice weather, the DJ tunes, good company, a new menu to explore or the sound of water splashing in the pool a few metres away, but it just felt right, like I had unplugged from the urges of the day and just embraced a feeling of relaxation. For me, an aspect that makes good food even better is having knowledgeable, friendly staff. Abhishek assisted us throughout our dining journey with patience and attention to our many requests. He also helped us pick items from the expertly crafted menu. The selection is an ode to classic French dishes with a local and Mediterranean twist, perfect to accommodate all diets and preferences.
We placed our orders and, in no time, the dishes started arriving at our table. The Niçoise Salad, a classic recipe originating in the coastal city of Nice, France, is traditionally made with

tomatoes, hard-boiled eggs and tuna. At La Terrace, it was also accompanied by green beans, cooked potatoes, green leaves and onions, with all ingredients plated in separate portions. The confit red tuna was the best part, with a tender, flaky texture and luxurious flavour, far moister than typical canned tuna, absolutely delicious. The Spanish Octopus was next, grilled to perfection and accompanied by rocket salad and cherry tomatoes. This delicacy is one of my dining companion’s favourite seafoods and we were all excited to try it. In my opinion, octopus should be prepared simply to highlight the incredible qualities of this oceanic treat – and that’s precisely what we got. The grilling process added a charred, smoky flavour, revealing a tender, succulent consistency with a slightly sweet, mild aquatic touch that was far from fishy –one of the winners in an evening of strong contenders. Still in the seafood business, we tried the Oysters On Ice, six pieces of the freshest samples I have ever had in my life, and Garlic Prawns. I know, it was a marine feast! The prawns were butter-poached, meaning they were cooked slowly and gently in melted butter at a low temperature. This cooking style prevents food from becoming tough, keeping it moist and juicy. The lemon and parsley added the final touch, giving it a luscious bite. Moving on to mains, we tried a great vegetarian pick: Tagliatelle with Mushroom and Truffle Cream. I have to confess that I am a pasta lover, and if there is an option on the menu, I automatically go for it. If it has a truffle touch, there is no way I won’t order it. As expected, the warm dish was as comforting as I wanted it to be – rich, decadent and earthy, with deep umami flavour. The truffle provides a musky and pungent aroma that marries beautifully with

the mushroom’s meaty notes, enveloped in a silky, creamy sauce – it was luxurious and indulgent, and I kept going back for more. From the Signature Dishes section of the menu, we tried the Truffle Croque Monsieur, which Abhishek insisted on (thankfully) and Steak Frites, which is commonly served in French and Belgian brasseries. We initially didn’t go for this because it’s usually just a fancy grilled cheese. However, La Terrace elevates it to an entirely new level; the bread feels like it was made as a sophisticated puff pastry, generously filled with Emmental cheese, turkey ham, truffle shavings and, last but not least, truffle béchamel sauce. The crispy exterior and rich filling delivered an exuberant bite, with complex flavours that somehow harmonise – perfect for cold nights when all you want is a meal with intense notes.
The steak was beautiful: US prime striploin (250g), cooked in herb butter, served with fluffy, salty French fries and salad. Every proper place serving high-quality meat usually provides special cutlery to enhance the experience and at La Terrace, we received nicelooking Laguiole French knives. The meat was juicy and succulent with a deeply browned crust – heaven on a plate for a carnivore. On a side note, if you are a caviar enthusiast, there is a Caviar Service on the menu offering Kaspian Caviar served with sour cream, chives, chopped egg white and yolk, shallots, capers, blinis and crispy and boiled potatoes. You can choose from 10g to 125g. To end our meal, we tried two French desserts: Crepe Suzette and Profiteroles. The crepes were flamed in a very theatrical tableside performance by Pastry Chef Rajashekar. A delicate sweet made with thin pancakes folded in quarters, served in a caramelised orange sauce. The dough was super light, with pieces of orange confit and fresh segments. A mouthful of striking flavours that we all loved. The profiteroles had a choux pastry that was crispy on the outside with a slightly moist interior and, to my joy, it was not filled with whipped cream but with soft vanilla ice cream, finished with a chocolate sauce – not too sweet, just perfect.
If you are looking for a place that offers a superb ambience for a casual end-of-the-day drink paired with tasty food and hookah, La Terrace will tick all the boxes. But you have to move fast – the tables are proving to be hot tickets – it’s outdoor season, babe. ✤

AFriday brunch is more often than not accompanied with overindulgence of food and drinks. It’s a Bahrain staple. So, when my partner and I headed to OPA for a Greek brunch, I was excited to try a Mediterranean indulgence for a change – and a set menu brunch was even more welcomed as I’m not a big fan of buffets. OPA impresses straight away, starting from the entrance. A black and white tiled pathway decorated with lanterns and blue vases leads to a lift that takes you to the first floor. From there, the reception opens into a charming foliage-filled alcove featuring a two-person swing under the OPA signage – an ideal Instagram photo op – and a shelved wall of classic mini Greek bust statues.
We were greeted by OPA’s General Manager, Konstantinos Kokkinaris, who warmly welcomed us in true Greek fashion, making us feel instantly at home. Walking into the main restaurant feels like entering a Mediterranean courtyard. Pristine white tablecloths contrast with blue velvet seating, while pillars and walls feature Greek statue murals. Large blue flowerpots and slatted overhead trellises lined with bougainvillea create the impression of an airy pergola. The dining area also features a fully stocked, white-walled bar and a DJ booth framed by large clay vases. For those who prefer the outdoors, the OPA Garden terrace offers an al fresco bar and comfy bench seating around a central water feature.
Once settled, Konstantinos walked us through the menu, and I was glad to see plenty of veggie options for myself.

The food began arriving in waves, designed for sharing. My favourite thing about Greek cuisine is the starters, and OPA excels here. We began with warm, pillowy pita bread and a trio of dips that could have easily stood in for a small meal. The Hummus with Crispy Lamb starred creamy chickpeas with tahini, contrasting nicely with the crunch from pine nuts and fried lamb pieces. The Taramosalata was exceptionally creamy, topped with onions, chives and a drizzle of olive oil and lemon juice. The Tzatziki was my favourite though – thick yoghurt with cucumber and dill, cool and refreshing.
From the cold starters, the Greek Salad was non-negotiable: a generous block of feta perched on vine tomatoes, cucumbers, ramiro peppers, onion, capers and Kalamata olives, all dressed in an oregano vinaigrette. Simple, yet delicious – proving that fresh, quality produce needs very little help to shine. The OPA Salad was equally impressive but richer, featuring crisp romaine lettuce and a genius avocadodill dressing. Combined with the saltiness of feta cheese and the nuttiness from mixed seeds, it created a perfect balance that felt both comforting and light.
Then came the hot starters, which is where the fun really started. Heads turned as the Flaming Saganaki arrived, flambéed tableside by OPA’s show chef. The theatrics brought lively energy, but the dish delivered too – warm graviera cheese paired with fig jam, toasted walnuts and lemon, a lovely mix of sweet, sour and salty. My partner made quick work of the Lamb Kebabs, which came in pastry-wrapped rolls filled with minced lamb and served with spicy tomato sauce and garlic yoghurt. Meanwhile, I was

perfectly happy hoarding the Ladenia! A first for me, it was a bit like a mini Greek pizza – thin in the centre, topped with marinated cherry tomatoes, feta mousse and hot honey, with a delicious crisp crust. My advice? Eat it straight away while it’s still piping hot and soft.
By the middle of the brunch, the atmosphere shifted as Greek dancing and traditional plate smashing took centre stage! Guests were encouraged to join in and, for a moment, it felt like a big family celebration – a scene straight out of My Big Fat Greek Wedding , full of lively warmth and loving chaos.
For the mains, my partner enjoyed the Tahini Salmon with its unique creamy finish, served with spinach tarhana (a fermented mixture of grains and yoghurt), artichoke, avgolemono (a type of lemon-egg sauce) and pickles –wonderfully indulgent but not heavy – ideal for brunch.
The Grilled Baby Chicken that followed was seasoned to perfection and oh so tender, served with wild greens, green olives and a light jus. I opted for the Papoutsakia, a lovely authentic Mediterranean dish of roasted aubergine with caramelised onions and pine nuts, topped with fresh cream and a verdant dollop of herby green tomato relish. We also shared a side of Grilled Vegetables – charred onions, courgettes and cherry tomatoes – and Feta Fries, proper hand-cut chips topped with generous crumbled cheese. We were lucky enough to try a brand-new addition, the Prawn Saganaki – one of five festive dishes available throughout December and soon joining the brunch menu. It arrived beautifully presented under a sesame-sprinkled bread dome lid. Lifting it revealed balls of finely chopped prawns mixed with vegetables in a tomato-based sauce. Soft and slightly tangy, it’s definitely a worthy addition.
Desserts at OPA are anything but an afterthought. The Sokolatopita was my favourite – a three-layered creation with hot chocolate fondant on top, crispy vermicelli in the middle and tahini ice cream at the bottom. The earthiness of the tahini against the sweet chocolate was divine, with the vermicelli adding crunch. The Armenonville offered something lighter: a vanilla semifreddo with a mousse-like consistency dressed with almond and chocolate sauce, almond flakes, raspberry coulis, tiny meringues and edible flowers. It looked beautiful and tasted even better. However, the real showstopper was the OPA Chocolate Baklava from the sharing menu. It arrived in a pastry basket overflowing with milk and dark chocolate, vanilla and pistachio ice creams, with cubes of nutty baklava hidden among the gooey gorgeousness. Topped with whipped cream and shards of dark chocolate tuile, it was a befitting finale to a meal built on generosity.
Friday Brunch at OPA is warm, welcoming and genuinely fun — the kind of afternoon that leaves you full, happy and already planning your next visit! ✤

To savour the essence of a true Bahraini breakfast, Apple Sharma headed to Al Sedra restaurant, where local flavours stood front and centre on the plate and the palate.

I’ve called Bahrain home for many years and one of my favourite things about the island is its warmth, tradition and authentic charm. And although I’ve tried many local restaurants, Al Sedra, located in Muharraq Souq right next to the iconic Pearling Path Visitor Centre, has been a recent introduction – a true hidden gem! I was there only last month to witness the Al Sedra Folklore Show (running every Thursday and Friday until mid-December), which celebrates Bahraini culture through traditional musical theatre. The show was as impressive as the restaurant itself, and I jumped at the chance of another visit, this time to try its newly introduced Bahraini breakfast. They say there’s no better way to experience the cuisine of a country than with a local and I fully agree, as my lovely Bahraini colleague joined me to walk and talk me through the authentic delights of a traditional breakfast.
I absolutely love Al Sedra for its charming setting – it’s like walking into an old Bahraini house. The small doorway on the main street is a little deceiving, as the long entrance leads to a large courtyard, which houses both the indoor restaurant and an extensive outdoor area, featuring beautiful garden and terraced seating, as well as a rooftop dining space. A large tree standing tall in the courtyard provides shade and is adorned with filigree lanterns and pastel-coloured umbrellas hanging upside-down, adding a quirky charm to the décor. Casual wooden furniture with leaf-patterned cushions lends a warm and cosy feel to the place. With the beautiful weather we’ve been having, it’s the perfect time to sit outside, so we decided to have our breakfast al fresco style.
The friendly Restaurant Manager, Kamal Perera, showed us to a corner table on the terrace and we couldn’t help but notice how quiet, calm and peaceful the restaurant felt. It was the perfect laid-back start we needed to end a hectic work week.
The buffet featured a variety of authentic breakfast dishes, and my colleague was overjoyed to see all her favourites. Her words “I feel like I’m at home having Friday breakfast with my family” said it all, and I knew this would be by far one of the most traditional Bahraini breakfast experiences I would have.
From the drinks section, we started with fresh orange juice, karak and a small plate of Khanfaroosh, which I jokingly called mini Bahraini doughnuts because of their shape. These little bitesized ‘doughnuts’ had a more cake-like consistency and were absolutely delicious, with distinctive aromatic hints of saffron and cardamom coming through in every bite.
Off to a sweet start, I began with some of the Middle Eastern staples – hummus, labneh zaatar, sambosa, falafel and mixed vegetables. The silky labneh with za’atar and the creamy hummus were the perfect accompaniment to the crispy falafels. I wouldn’t usually have sambosa for breakfast but these mini ones paired deliciously with the slightly tangy labneh, especially when dunked into the cold, yoghurty freshness.
While I was enjoying my little plate, my colleague had made a beeline for the Balaleet, a traditional sweet vermicelli noodle dish served with egg omelette. This sweet and savoury dish hit just the right spot, with a perfect balance of sugary and salty flavours. We then ventured into the world of beans, beans and more beans! We tried three delicious varieties – Hamsat Nakhi, Looba and Foul. Having tried foul (mashed up fava beans

with spices, similar to refried beans) many a time, I gave it a miss to keep space for the newer dishes that I hadn’t tried before and am I glad that I did, because the other two surpassed my expectations.
The Hamsat Nakhi – chickpeas with onion, garlic, tomatoes and mixed spices – was hearty, flavourful and definitely our favourite. I scooped mine with freshly baked local bread sprinkled with sesame seeds, straight out of the oven –tasting as delicious as the kind you get from the local village bakery. My colleague devoured hers with egg and tomato, another popular local breakfast favourite. Looba, the other white bean dish cooked in tomato sauce, had just the right amount of tanginess – slightly sweet and wonderfully delicious. I couldn’t believe that these humble legumes could pack such bold flavours.
For the meat eaters, the two protein options included beef and chicken liver – both perfectly tender, cooked in tomatoes and pomegranate molasses. The breakfast brunch also has an egg station where you can have eggs cooked to your liking. We tried the cheese omelette with mushrooms and mixed peppers – soft and fluffy, it was another hit at the table. Finishing off with cups of black tea and coffee, we couldn’t resist sneaking in another Khanfaroosh – a lovely way to round off our morning feast.
With free valet parking and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, Al Sedra offers a genuinely cultural experience, bringing authentic flavours and traditions together in a way that feels true to Bahrain. ✤

As the Fact Dining Awards Bahrain turned 16, the elite of the island’s hospitality sector joined us to pay tribute to an industry that continues to innovate and grow with every passing year.
VIP guests and our partners were on hand to celebrate the cream of the island’s hospitality and food and beverage (F&B) offerings as we handed out more than 110 well-deserved awards.
Taking place in the glamorous surroundings of the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, the event recognised the Best and Favourite venues across numerous well-contested categories, ranging from newcomers to the newly introduced Dining Experiences and the everpopular regional cuisines.
As our 16th edition, it was something of a coming of age and we were in the mood to party with more than 560 specially invited guests, who enjoyed spectacular food and beverages alongside some great entertainment.
But the main event was, of course, the chance to pay tribute to those who continue to make the Kingdom’s dining scene a huge part of the entertainment industry, as well as an important contributor to the local economy. As we launched the nominations for this year’s awards, we were seriously impressed with the number of well-thoughtout new concepts taking their place alongside our many much-loved venues.
The Chef of the Year Award, now in its third year and presented purely on the basis of public online votes, was, as always, extremely strongly contested
and, we have to say, each year brings new and excellent entrants.
The extremely popular winner was Chef Brian Becher, Regional Executive Chef –Middle East, Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group, from the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay.
As always, with the Fact Dining Awards, two winners were chosen in each of the other 55 categories – the Favourites, selected by a public on-line vote, and the Best, chosen by industry experts and the fact editorial team from among the top three in the public voting.
We worked our way through more than 860 nominations, many of whom were suggested by our readership. And there was a big surprise when the voting numbers were finalised. This year’s edition attracted more than 114,000 votes – a huge jump from last year and an amazing show of support for the industry
The plaque for Overall Favourite Restaurant of the year went to Sumosan at Address Beach Resort Bahrain. This global brand made its Bahrain debut just over a year ago and from the local touches and curated art to the excellence of the menu, it has already gained a loyal following. The Overall Best Restaurant of The Year was awarded to Golestan Persian Grill at the Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, a venue that was hugely popular before the refurbishment and which has continued to please and
attracted a whole legion of new fans for its amazing food and outstanding service since the reopening.
A great deal of hard work and planning went into the event which was made possible with the support of our generous partners:
Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, Audi Centre Bahrain, Vatel Hotel & Tourism Business School, BMMI Shops, Bidfood, Asgharali, Anorris Events, HSP Marketing, the ENTERTAINER, Twigs Flowers & Chocolates and Red Bull.
And the night saw social media lighting up as the fact team took readers behind the scenes with stories throughout the day and evening @factmagazine and the Kingdom’s hospitality elite taking to Instagram and TikTok to share their experiences.
fact Magazines Group Publisher, Rami Khalil, said: “The hospitality industry is such an important part of who we are and what we do, so we always look forward to the opportunity to show our appreciation. The support from the dining sector and our readers and voters never fails to amaze and humble our whole team and we are, as always, so very thankful.”
The Fact Dining Awards is part of a wider initiative by Fact ME, with highly regarded awards also taking place in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, London, Qatar and Riyadh.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2026. ✤

A delightful blend of Egyptian seafood and authentic Bahraini dishes

If you fancy swapping warm shores for winter peaks this month, then Europe’s ski season is calling with that irresistible blend of crisp air, mountain views and cosy evenings. Whether you’re skiing pristine pistes, wandering through storybook villages or indulging in the après-ski, these snowy destinations have all the ingredients for a magical winter escape.

Set in France’s Les Trois Vallées, the world’s largest interconnected ski area, Courchevel is the definition of Alpine luxury. Made up of six villages, Courchevel 1850 is the most iconic, with Michelin-starred dining, designer boutiques and five-star chalets. You’ll find celebrities on the chairlifts and bubbly flowing at slope-side bars, but beneath the glitz lies a resort designed for pure skiing pleasure. Linked with Méribel and Val Thorens by 600km of meticulously maintained runs, Courchevel offers endless variety for all levels and its north-facing slopes guarantee excellent snow cover. Adventure seekers can try snowshoeing or a hot-air balloon ride for unbeatable views of Mont Blanc. For a quieter vibe, Courchevel Moriond, Le Praz and Courchevel Village offer a more relaxed, family-friendly feel, all linked by modern lifts that make it easy to ski between villages. You can spend the morning conquering the steep couloirs (off-piste gullies) of the Saulire peak and the afternoon relaxing in the spa at Aquamotion (Europe’s largest mountain water park). Off the slopes, the après-ski scene is a world unto itself. Dine at the three Michelin-starred Le 1947 à Cheval Blanc, stroll through the glittering high street or end the day by a log fire with a chocolat viennois (hot chocolate with cream). The food scene is practically unrivalled in the mountains – expect everything from traditional Savoyard truffle fondue and gourmet raclette to tarte aux myrtilles (blueberry tart). For all its pomp and pizzazz, Courchevel still retains an unmistakable Alpine soul. You’ll be wowed by the prestige but it’s the easy rhythm of the slopes and perfectly groomed pistes that will keep you coming back.

If perfection had a postcode, it would probably be Zermatt. Dominated by the unmistakable pyramid of the Matterhorn mountain, this car-free village has an almost cinematic beauty – all wooden chalets, horsedrawn carriages and the smell of melted cheese wafting from fondue restaurants. But behind the fairytale charm lies one of the world’s most impressive ski areas. With 360km of pistes and year-round snow on the Theodul Glacier, it’s one of the few places where you can ski from one country to another, gliding over to Italy’s Cervinia for lunch and back before sunset. The panoramas are spectacular, with sweeping vistas that make you stop mid-descent just to take it all in. For non-skiers, Zermatt still offers plenty of magic. Take the Gornergrat Railway up to 3,100m for views that look straight out of a painting, book a tobogganing and sledging experience or take a leisurely stroll through the charming village streets. Evenings are made for slow dining and good grape – think jazz bars with live music, candlelit dinners in converted chalets and steaming hot chocolate by the fire. Dining here is an art form, from mountain restaurants like Chez Vrony, serving hearty alpine fare with unbeatable views, to exquisite Valaisan cuisine at Michelin-starred Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni. And when it’s time to rest, many hotels offer rooms with floor-to-ceiling views, so you can watch the peaks turn pink at dusk. It’s not a budget trip but Zermatt isn’t about bargains; it’s about timeless beauty, Swiss precision and that feeling of being somewhere extraordinary.

If the Alps feel too busy this season, head north (way north) to Geilo – Norway’s best-kept winter secret. Halfway between Oslo and Bergen, this charming Norwegian town is one of Scandinavia’s oldest ski resorts and still feels blissfully authentic. Quieter, wilder and closer to nature, the vibe here is understated and effortlessly cool, more hygge than high fashion. Geilo’s smaller scale means fewer queues and more time to actually enjoy the snow. The slopes are gentle and well-kept, perfect for beginners and families, but there’s still plenty for adrenaline seekers, including terrain parks, snow-kiting and off-piste routes with sweeping fjord views. Off the slopes, you can go sledging, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing along hundreds of kilometres of scenic trails. You can even spend an evening in a traditional Sami lavvu tent, dining on reinsdyr gryte (reindeer stew) by a crackling fire. The town itself has that quintessential Nordic cosiness – timber cabins, roaring fireplaces and friendly locals. Sustainable travel is part of Geilo’s DNA, from eco-certified hotels to restaurants serving locally sourced produce. The food is hearty and honest: fish soups, smoked salmon, waffles with cloudberry jam and cinnamon buns worth writing home about. Add in the chance of spotting the Northern Lights (if you’re lucky), and you’ve got one of Europe’s most authentic winter escapes – genuinely warm and spectacularly scenic.
Elegant, traditional and quietly glamorous, Lech is Austria’s crown jewel – a place where Alpine heritage and high style coexist beautifully. Set in the region, it shares its slopes with St. Anton, Zürs and Stuben, offering access to nearly 300km of beautifully maintained slopes. On the mountain, you’ll find wide, rolling runs ideal for intermediate skiers, heli-skiing for those craving adventure, plus some of the best off-piste trails in Europe. Try the legendary White Ring circuit – one of Europe’s most scenic ski routes – or explore the quieter corners of Oberlech, accessible only by cable car. A favourite of royals and A-listers, Lech has an understated sophistication that’s hard to find elsewhere. You’ll find five-star hotels offering world-class wellness spas and attentive service without ostentation. For something special, walk along the frozen Lech River under a sky thick with stars; the sense of peace here is magnetic. The village itself is postcard-pretty, with onion-domed churches, chalet rooftops heavy with snow and streets that glow softly after dark. The après-ski is intimate and atmospheric – enjoy a fireside drink at a familyrun inn or a mellow jazz set at a mountain bar. The food scene is excellent too, from hearty Austrian classics like kaiserschmarrn (lightly sweetened pancake) to gourmet restaurants with views across the peaks. With its mix of refinement and true Alpine character, Lech remains one of Europe’s most graceful mountain escapes. ✤

MYSTERY/THRILLER/SUSPENSE
No One Aboard
By Emy McGuire
The Cameron family sets off to celebrate high school graduation with a voyage aboard their luxury sailboat. But three weeks later, there is no response on their radio and the vessel is found floating empty. This is described as: “A delicious domestic mystery that asks who is more dangerous to a family: a stormy ocean or each other?ˮ

fact: You’ve been performing from a very young age. How did your professional musical journey begin?
BG: Honestly, I’ve been chasing sound since I could form sentences. Performing was always my language when words fell short. My professional journey began the moment I realised music could turn emotions into energy. From rocking small local shows to performing internationally, every stage has been a classroom, every crowd a reminder of why I do this. It’s been growth, passion and purpose all rolled into melody.
fact: You produce, record, mix and master your own music. What’s the most satisfying part of doing it all yourself?
BG: It’s complete creative freedom. Every sound, every layer, every mix carries my fingerprint. I’m not just making music; I’m building worlds that reflect exactly how I feel. There’s no filter, no middleman, just me translating emotion into sound. Knowing no one else could create that exact vibe, that’s the most powerful feeling ever.
fact: Your music moves between hip-hop, R&B and pop. What draws you to these genres?
BG: Each one unlocks a different side of me. Hip-hop gives me the raw truth, R&B lets me dive into emotion and pop keeps things playful and limitless. Together, they create this balance between edge and soul that keeps my sound evolving. I never want to be boxed in. I want people to hear something unexpected every time.
fact: At 17, you took second place at the International ARTS Talent Showcase in Orlando and later made the top 100 for American Idol Season 16. What was it like stepping onto that international stage so young?
BG: It was surreal, like stepping into a dream I’d been rehearsing my whole life. I was surrounded by insanely talented artists from around the world and it pushed me to level up fast. American Idol

showed me I could hold my own with the best, and that fire never left. It made me hungrier, more confident and ready for any stage.
fact: Tell us a little about your new album LOST & FOUND released earlier this year and your latest single Cant Press Me that came out just over a month ago. What inspired these?
BG: LOST & FOUND came from a place of growth and losing parts of myself, then finding my strength again. It’s personal, it’s real. Can’t Press Me carries that same energy. it’s about standing tall no matter what comes your way. Both represent who I am now: focussed, unshakable and free.
fact: You’re now based in Bahrain. Are there any new projects in the pipeline and where can we expect to see you?
BG: Bahrain’s been amazing. The energy, the people, the culture – it’s inspired me in new ways. I’ve got fresh collaborations in the works, some bold visuals and live shows that’ll bring my sound to life. Expect the unexpected. I’m just getting started.
fact: If you could create your dream collaboration (any artist, any genre), who’d be on that track and why?
BG: I’d say The Weeknd. His sound is dark, cinematic and emotional – that space between pain and power. Mixing that with

my energy would be crazy. I love working with artists who aren’t afraid to break rules. ✤

What are your retirement plans? Travel the world, spend time with the grandkids or maybe take up a new hobby? (In our case, we’re just hoping for an early finish the day we shuffle off this mortal coil.) Whatever it is, we’re willing to bet you won’t be copying the elderly dishwasher in China’s Sichuan province who went viral on social media platform Weibo. Now, working past retirement age is not that unusual. But turning up in rubber boots, dropped off by a Bentley! Well, that’s something else entirely.

It turns out the lady in question, who has not been officially identified, doesn’t, in fact need to work. But the China Times reported that she feels bored at home and ‘my body feels uncomfortable if I don’t wash dishes for a day’. Unable to convince her mother to retire, the woman’s daughter drops her off each day in her very fancy car and picks her up again at the end of her shift. An admirable work ethic but we can think of plenty of other ways to beat the boredom.
Pet owners are a breed apart – we should know, we’re among them. But even we were a bit surprised when a press release from Nuggets & Karats popped up in our in baskets.
The luxury jewellery brand is known for its stunning handcrafted pieces but, it seems, the artisans are as much in love with their four-legged friends as we are and they’ve announced a pet jewellery collection for the holiday season. The exclusive, limited-edition ‘Nuggyz’, will be on display at Wolf & Badger (the

high-end ethical outlet), on LA’s iconic Melrose High Street, no less. And the collection features a range of 18-carat gold-plated brass letter pendants, meticulously crafted in an eye-catching gothic font and adorned with delicate floral accents. Pet owners can also express their affection by personalising their pets' collars with names or special words that hold significance. We’re not sure if this is mad or brilliant. We’re just hoping our Fido’s not getting any grand ideas!
There’s no doubt the Emerald Isle has some impressive wildlife, from otters to badgers, a whole legion of deer and plenty of seals and other marine mammals. But locals in Killaloe, County Clare, were in for a bit of a shock when an African ‘lion’ apparently turned up in their midst.
Local Forest Manager John O’Reilly told news website CorkBeo that the mystery beast had been spotted by harvesters working nearby but the sighting was at a distance and assumed to be a deer.

However, local Gardaí (police) launched an investigation after a truck driver managed to video what appeared to be a lion on the loose wandering in the woods. Armed, one assumes, with a large dose of courage and a bucketful of beef, the officers went in search of the animal only to discover the ‘lion’ was, in fact, a harmless Newfoundland dog called Mouse “with a fresh haircut”! Just goes to show, sometimes all you need to completely change your image is a trip to the salon.
