CAPE YORK DYNAMIC BUSINESS SYMPOSIUM

Hosted by James Cook University and Clean Growth Choices and facilitated by highly experienced world class speakers including Professor Allan Dale, Professor Hurriyet Babacan and Peter Laurie. The Symposium will explore the need for resilience, adaptability, innovation and sustainability in Cape York businesses.

Session 1: Resilience and Adaptability Tuesday 15 June 9.30am - 11am
Facilitated by Professor Hurriyet Babacan from The Cairns Institute, James Cook University, this session we will focus on building resilience in business and the importance of value adding and adaptability. We will also explore local and regional case studies and some of the business mega trends. Guest speakers include Krista Watkins, Managing Director of Natural Evolutions and 2018 National Rural Woman of the year and Pip Schroor, Regional Resilience Coordinator, Torres Cape Indigenous Council Alliance (TCICA).
Session 2: Workforce Wellbeing Tuesday 15 June 11.30am - 1pm
Facilitated by Cook Shire Council’s director of Organisational Business Services, Heather Kelly, this session will explore issues of workforce culture and mindset and how to build personal and workforce wellbeing as well as the impacts of COVID and natural disasters on mental health. Guest speakers include Dr Natasha Coventry, Eastern Director of Medical Services at Cooktown Hospital, Stephen White, Senior Mental Health Clinician, Royal Flying Doctor Service and Don Mackay, experienced senior Queensland Police Officer.
Session 3: Regional Development Forum Tuesday 15 June - 2pm to 4pm
Hosted by Professor Allan Dale, this forum will provide the opportunity to bring Government Departments, businesses, research, peak bodies and community organisations together to outline some of the larger infrastructure, health and research developments in the Cape. Invited representatives include members from Regional Development Australia, Queensland Department of Agriculture, Cape York Natural Resources and Mines, Australian Institute of Marine Science, Department of Main Roads and NBN.
Session 4: Skills for Small Business and Digital Innovation Wednesday 16 June 9.30am - 11.30am
Facilitated by Tamilyn Brennan, Board Member for Jobs Queensland, this session will explore digital and business innovation and how to build skills for small business. Westpac Indigenous Banking will present a workshop on Seven Steps for Business Success followed by a workshop for small business skills run by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training.
Demystifying digital innovation & Start-ups Wednesday 16 June - 12.30 to 1.30pm
Presented by Peter Laurie, this workshop will help entrepreneurs, business owners and individuals to demystify digital innovation, learn more about start-ups and how to manage resource constraints.
Session 5: Sustainability, Innovation and Entrepreneurships Wednesday 16 June - 2pm to 4pm
Facilitated by Chad Renando, Research Fellow with the Rural Economies Centre of Excellence and the Australian Centre of Entrepreneurship Research, This session will focus on ecosystem factors and support for growth and sustainability. Guest Speakers include Mark Olsen, Chief Executive Officer, Tourism Tropical North Queensland and local business owners.
