VOLUME 45 NUMBER 3

FITNESS, RECREATION, PROGRAMMING, CITY INFORMATION, EVENTS & MORE

Letter FROM THE Mayor

Dear Woodstock,

It is an exciting time to live, work, and play in Woodstock! Our city continues to grow and thrive, and I am proud to share several projects that highlight the spirit of progress, creativity, and community that makes Woodstock so special.

The renovation of the Woodstock Recreation Center is underway, ensuring that future generations will enjoy a modern, welcoming space to stay active and connected. In the meantime, our temporary Dean Street Rec Center is keeping programs and fitness opportunities running strong, showing the resilience and commitment of our community.

Equally inspiring is the nearly complete construction at our historic Woodstock Opera House. This treasured landmark has been the heart of culture and creativity in our city for generations, and its updated facilities will ensure that it continues to inspire and entertain for many years to come. We are also thrilled to celebrate new recreational opportunities, including the opening of the Intergenerational Playground and the NFC Fitness Court. These additions bring people of all ages together, encouraging healthy lifestyles, outdoor fun, and stronger connections among neighbors. None of this would be possible without the dedicated work of our City staff and the support of our residents. Together, you embody the values of teamwork, pride, and vision that keep Woodstock moving forward.

Thank you for your commitment to making our city such a vibrant and welcoming place. The future is bright, and I am grateful to be on this journey with all of you.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES

PEOPLE IN NEED

Our community cares about the well-being of our community members. For help with every day concerns like food, clothing, housing and healthcare to those in crisis, Woodstock is committed to helping maintain and improve the lives of its citizens. For more information about where residents can receive help go to www.mchenry.edu/pin, People in Need Forum

POLICE BEAT OFFICERS

The Police Department has divided the City into four geographical areas for its Permanent Beat Officer Program. These areas have Officers assigned to them on an annual basis. Officers have been trained in various Community Policing and Problem Solving Policing concepts and strive to work with the residents of their police beat for safety, service and problem resolution. Find your Police Beat Officers, and more information, at woodstockil.gov/286

Just a reminder that school is back in session for all the children in our community. As you drive, please stay alert to increased pedestrian traffic as students walk to and from school each day.

Illinois law requires drivers to stop and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and to obey the 20 MPH speed limit in designated school zones. Be especially mindful of school buses — stop arms and flashing lights mean the bus is loading or unloading students, and no vehicle may pass a school bus while the stop arm is extended.

The Police Department will have extra patrols around schools in the coming days to help ensure everyone’s safety as we adjust to the school year.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY REMINDERS

Here are some important tips to help keep everyone safe:

• BE SEEN: Wear bright or reflective costumes and carry a flashlight or glow sticks while trickor-treating.

• WATCH FOR TRAFFIC: Always look both ways before crossing streets and use crosswalks. Drivers — please slow down and watch for children in neighborhoods.

• STAY TOGETHER: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or responsible older sibling.

• CHECK YOUR TREATS: Before eating any candy, make sure it’s properly wrapped and hasn’t been tampered with.

• STAY ON SIDEWALKS: Stick to well-lit areas and avoid cutting through yards or alleys.

Let’s make this a fun and safe Halloween for everyone!

WOODSTOCK RESIDENTS Need to Know!

FROM THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

WoodstockIL.gov/PublicWorks Facebook.com/CityofWoodstockIL

LEAF COLLECTION

Residents have several options when it comes to fallen leaves: Bulk (Loose) Leaf Collection

The City’s Public Works Department will complete two, two week rounds of leaf collection throughout the City, beginning:

NORTH of Railroad Tracks BEGINS WEEK OF OCT 27

FINAL WEEK NOV 10

SOUTH of Railroad Tracks BEGINS WEEK OF NOV 3

FINAL WEEK NOV 17

Public Work crews use leaf vacuum machines and other equipment to provide a timely pick-up, dependent on the weather. Residents should have leaf piles raked to the parkway by 7A on the Monday of their week. Piles should be away from mailboxes and off the street. Avoid raking leaves into the street. Doing so allows the leaves to wash onto storm water collection grates and into the underground pipes which can increase the chance of flooding during rain events. Leaf piles will not be collected if they cannot be reached by equipment or contain brush or garbage. Vehicles should be removed or at least 20 ft from any pile during collection in their neighborhood. Dates for Bulk Leaf Collection are firm. No extensions or return trips will be made.

Bagged Leaf Scheduled Pick-Up

Additionally, residents can have bagged leaves picked up in compostable paper bags. Pick-up will occur during the same timeframe as Bulk Leaf Collection. Pick-up will continue through December 19 by appointment through Public Works. To request a pickup, contact Public Works by phone at 815-338-6118 or by email at pwdept@woodstockil.gov. Compostable bags are available for purchase at local grocery and hardware stores.

Residents may also choose to compost their leaves. Mulching leaves into smaller particles and allowing the mulch to remain on the lawn provides the soil with valuable nutrients.

PLEASE NOTE: Because of the increased traffic, bulk leaf collection along state highways is more dangerous for crews. If possible, residents along Route 47 and Route 120 are encouraged to bag their leaves and contact the Public Works office to arrange for collection. This is not mandatory, simply a request.

HYDRANT FLUSHING

The City’s Public Works Department flushes fire hydrants as a preventive maintenance measure twice a year. Fall 2024 schedule:

All Hydrants WEST of IL Route 47 SEP 22 – OCT 3

All Hydrants EAST of IL Route 47 OCT 6 – 17

During this time, residents are encouraged to perform their own preventive maintenance by checking their supply line to their washing machines Hydrant flushing can result in discolored water; however, the water is safe to drink. You should not wash clothes when hydrants in your area are scheduled to be flushed.

OPEN BURNING

The City of Woodstock allows recreational fires, which are defined as a temporary outdoor fire no larger than 3” x 3’ for burning seasoned firewood in a fully contained outdoor fireplace or appliance designed for recreational burning purposes. Burning of items such as leaves, grass, shrubbery, landscaping materials, rubbish or garbage is prohibited.

STYROFOAM RECYCLING

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County offer a Styrofoam collection site behind the Public Works Department at 326 Washington Street. Recyclers can deposit Styrofoam in the aluminum shed which is filled with receptacles to accept expanded polystyrene and packing peanuts only. Drop off is available Monday-Friday from 7:00A-3:00P. In order to be properly recycled, styrofoam can NOT have:

• Tape, labels, glue, or any other materials stuck to it.

• Food condiments or waste stuck to it.

Volunteers from the Defenders regularly collect Styrofoam left for recycling and manage the program. For more information, please contact the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County at envirodefmc@gmail.com or 815-338-0393.

DISCHARGE OPTIONS FOR CHLORINATED WATER

Swimming pools discharged into or nearby surface waters can have an adverse effect on local water quality and is toxic to wildlife and fish. To prevent this, pool owners are only allowed to discharge dechlorinated water. Once safely dechlorinated, water may be discharged to land in a manner that does not result in flooding.

Contact your local pool chemical supplier to determine the type and amount of dechlorinating chemical to utilize. Questions? Contact the Public Works Department at pwdept@woodstockil.gov or 815-338-6118.

The Woodstock Public Library is proud to announce the start of Prairie Roots, an ambitious, two-year project that will transform our underused library grounds into vibrant, community-focused outdoor spaces rooted in sustainability and connection.

PRAIRIE ROOTS IS MORE THAN A GARDEN. IT WILL BE A LIVING LANDSCAPE DESIGNED TO:

• Restore native habitat

• Support pollinator health

• Boost climate resiliency

• Encourage intergenerational nature exploration

• Offer outdoor library programs to spark curiosity and play

• Foster understanding of native ecosystems and pollinator roles

At the heart of Prairie Roots is a landscaping master plan, designed by Blue Stem Ecological Services, that blends ecological best practices with community-focused design. The result will be a welcoming outdoor space where nature and people thrive together, featuring interactive elements for all ages and a flexible outdoor programming area that expands the Library’s ability to offer events, learning, and gathering opportunities under the open sky.

Help community roots grow deep! Support the Prairie Roots Project at the Library through sponsorship opportunities. Contact Laura at lcullotta@woodstockil.gov. Visit us to see the
