GROWING CONNECTIONS AT THE LIBRARY
The Woodstock Public Library is proud to announce Prairie Roots — an ambitious, multi-year project that will transform our underused library grounds into vibrant, community-focused outdoor spaces rooted in sustainability and connection.
WHAT IS PRAIRIE ROOTS?
Developed in collaboration with library staff, board members, local residents, and ecological planners from Bluestem Ecological Services, Prairie Roots is more than a garden. It will be a living landscape designed to: • Restore native habitat • Support pollinator health • Boost climate resiliency • Encourage intergenerational nature exploration • Offer outdoor library programs to spark curiosity and play • Foster understanding of native ecosystems and pollinator roles At the heart of Prairie Roots is a landscaping master plan that blends ecological best practices with community-focused design. The result will be a welcoming outdoor space where nature and people thrive together — featuring interactive elements for all ages and a flexible outdoor programming area that expands the Library’s ability to offer events, learning, and gathering opportunities under the open sky. Prairie Roots reflects our commitment to sustainability, education, and community engagement.

Prairie Roots will be built in four main phases over the next two years: Phase 1 - South side of library property facing Judd Street & Children’s Rotunda Area. Phase 2 - West side facing the public parking lot. Phase 3 - North side & StoryWalk®. Phase 4 - East side including staff area and utilities. Future Project Auxiliary Lot across the street from the library.
OUR ROOTS: THE STORY BEHIND PRAIRIE ROOTS For a number of years library staff have discussed the idea of creating an outdoor space that could be a natural, welcoming environment for people of all ages to gather, learn, and connect with nature. That vision began to take shape in 2022, thanks to a generous bequest f rom the estate of longtime Woodstock resident Rosemary Bayton. Inspired by her dedication to literacy and gardening, the library began to envision a tribute that would honor her legacy in a meaningful way. What started as an idea for an outdoor space has now blossomed into Prairie Roots, a fully realized landscaping project. At the heart of Prairie Roots will be The Bayton Space—an intergenerational gathering area surrounded by native prairie plants. This centerpiece will include a welcoming moon gate, outdoor seating, and a walkway leading to a StoryWalk®, offering moments of reflection, discovery, and connection. This vibrant space will celebrate community, sustainability, and the enduring impact of one woman’s generous spirit.

Attorney Martin Coonen will lead a community meeting on the legal rights of immigrants in the event of an ICE raid. The meeting is free to attend and will be held in the library’s lower level. The program will cover the following topics: 1. Inform people of their rights at work and home in the event immigration authorities arrive. 2. Explain and assist in completing short term and standby guardianship papers to provide for children in the event parents are detained. 3. Answer questions and help folks feel less alone and adrift. LOCAL HISTORY WALKING TOURS
Join library staff for a walking tour of the downtown Woodstock area. We’ll begin our walk in the neighborhood of the library and learn about some of the historic nearby homes as well as their past inhabitants. Then, we’ll continue our walk and learn the fascinating history of the historic Woodstock Square, including the history of the Old Courthouse, Opera House, and much more. The entire tour will take approximately 90 minutes with 1 mile of walking. In the case of inclement weather, check with the library the day of the tour to confirm if tour is being rescheduled. This Fall, author William Hazelgrove is stopping by Woodstock Public Library to present his research on the famous Wright brothers. Prepared with original archives and family letters, this author presents a compelling case that Wilbur Wright, not his brother Orville, was the driving force behind the solution to manned flight. Come watch Hazelgrove explore the life of the Wright brothers, their time at Kitty Hawk, and the impact Wilbur’s early death had on his legacy. DATE: Tuesday/September 30 TIME: 7:00-8:00 p.m.
AARP SAFE DRIVING COURSE
Drivers 50 years and older will learn defensive driving techniques, proven safety strategies, and new traffic laws and rules of the road. The cost for this class is $20 for AARP members or $25 for non-members. Fees are payable by cash or check to the instructor at the first class. County Assessor - Alex Benitez, County Clerk - Joe Tirio, and County Treasurer Donna Kurtz will lead a panel discussion on the ABCs of McHenry County Property Taxes. This presentation will help attendees with understanding your tax bill, applying for exemptions such as Senior Freeze and Homestead, how to appeal an assessment, how a tax bill is built, how voters change tax bills, and to how to set up fraud alert to protect your property. Join Nellie Bly at the US Embassy in Paris in February 1919. The Great War has ended, and Nellie recounts her adventures as a reporter, in the US, Mexico and as a war correspondent, as she awaits permission to return to the US. Born Elizabeth Jane Cochran (1864-1922), this pioneer of investigative journalism is better known by her nom de plume,”Nellie Bly”. Bly spent a day in Woodstock in 1895 visiting Eugene V Debs. WINTER SOWING
Winter Sowing is a term for a specific method of starting seeds outdoors in an enclosed container. Gardeners plant seeds in recycled containers such as milk jugs then set the jugs outside for the winter. It’s that simple. What’s old is new again. Join us each month for some fun activities that were popular when some of our librarians were in middle school and high school.
SHRINKY DINKS

FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS

WEAVING POTHOLDERS

STUDY NIGHT
The end of the semester brings final projects and final tests. You have to study anyway, so why not do it with friends and classmates at the library? FOOD PANTRY
The library’s community-supported food pantry is located in the library foyer and is available when the library is open. During the cold-weather months donated coats, hats, gloves, boots, and socks are available next to the pantry. All are welcome to take what they need to keep themselves and their family warm and fed. Donations of unexpired, non-perishable food, as well as toiletries are greatly appreciated and may be dropped off inside the library during regular library hours. Additional information about the Food Pantry is available on the library’s website in the Services section.

Locate the program you wish to register for by date or by using the search feature. 4. Click on the Program and scroll down to the Registration Form. 5. Fill in the form and click Register.

GETTING A LIBRARY CARD City of Woodstock Residents and Rural Woodstock Public Library District Residents above the age of five qualify for a full-service Woodstock Library card at no cost. This card allows the cardholder to check out up to 50 items, borrow materials from other libraries, and full access to digital services. Children ages 5-14 years old must apply for the library card with their parent/guardian present. The parent/guardian will be required to present photo identification and proof of address.
