FIRST WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH The Friends of Woodstock Public Library accept donations of gently used books, CDs, and DVDs on the first Wednesday of the month during regular library hours. Limit of five boxes/bags per donation day.
If you enjoy visiting the library, rely on the library’s programs and services, and appreciate the benefits the library brings to the whole community, you’re already a friend of the library. Make it official by joining the Friends of Woodstock Public Library, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the library. Membership is free and open to everyone. Everyone is welcome to pitch in at planning meetings and fundraising events. Look for the Friends membership brochure or inquire at the library front desk to join.

GROWING CONNECTIONS AT THE LIBRARY Prairie Roots is a landscaping master plan that reimagines the library’s underutilized grounds into vibrant, sustainable outdoor spaces. By combining ecological best practices with community-focused design, Prairie Roots is designed to create a welcoming environment where people and nature thrive together. Developed in collaboration with library staff, board members, local residents, and ecological planners from Bluestem Ecological Services, Prairie Roots is more than a garden. It will be a living landscape designed to: •
Restore native habitat

Support pollinator health
•
Boost climate resiliency
•
Encourage intergenerational nature exploration
•
Offer outdoor library programs to spark curiosity and play
•
Foster understanding of native ecosystems and pollinator roles
In the summer of 2025, native and pollinator friendly plantings were installed around the library, along with the construction of the Bayton Outdoor Space on the entrance side of the library. The final pieces will be the installation of the shade sails of over the space, and a moon gate and sound baffles that were built by McHenry County College graphic design and welding students. When completed this space will be an inviting gathering spot for reflection and celebration and is named in honor of Rosemary Bayton, a longtime Woodstock resident and library supporter. In the spring of 2026, the currently undeveloped ground on the northside of the building will be transformed into immersive native woodland garden with sedges and prairie plants that will invite young and old to explore a natural path and StoryWalk®.

If flowers could speak, what would they say? Sarah Taylor from the Colonel Palmer House will kick off our Prairie Roots program series to discuss the origins of plant taxonomy, symbolic and historic meanings of flowers, flower arrangements through history, symbolic gardens, and more. HISTORY AND HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CHICAGO AUTO SHOW
Mitch Frumkin, Chicago Auto Show historian, presents a 50-minute video featuring a captivating mix of vintage photos, color film clips, period music, and voices from over 100 editions of the classic Chicago Auto Show. Emphasis will be given to showcase a pair of Guanci SJJ 1 GT sports cars displayed at the 1980 Chicago Auto Show due to its relevance from the Guanci Automobile Factory once located at 220 N. Madison St. in Woodstock. At the end of the program, five sets of complimentary passes to the 118th Chicago Auto Show taking place February 7-16 will be raffled off to one lucky participant, among other prizes. Join library staff for a walking tour of the downtown Woodstock area. We will begin our walk at the library and discuss historic neighborhood homes and their past inhabitants. GETTING A LIBRARY CARD City of Woodstock Residents and Rural Woodstock Public Library District Residents above the age of five qualify for a full-service Woodstock Library card at no cost. This card allows the cardholder to check out up to 50 items, borrow materials from other libraries, and full access to digital services. Children ages 5-14 years old must apply for the library card with their parent/guardian present. The parent/guardian will be required to present photo identification and proof of address.
