LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S June issue highlights

Back in March, for Mother's Day, I treated my dear old Mum to a five-star lunch in London, the full works. She is pretty social, my Mum, but even she was taken aback by the effort I put into the day itself and her beaming smile made it all worth it. But, when it comes to Father's Day, I am a little stumped.

That's not to say Dad doesn't deserve to be treated, but he's rather like me: simple. We are both never happier than when we are at home, with some free time to simply potter about, maybe doing the odd job here or there, or just putting the feet up and letting out a big sigh, with a nice cup of tea on the side.

Hertfordshire, however, has other ideas. Open your eyes and there's plenty out there to treat your own father figure, things that they may not even realise they will love. From beer brewing (definitely one for Dad) to hitting the slopes (judging by his dodgy ticker, probably not), the experts at Visit Herts have come up with some truly daddy ideas.

Perhaps brunch is on the menu for a family treat, so we round up our 10 favourites, plus our Home special returns with fresh interiors inspiration. Perhaps that's all I need, sit Dad down with this issue and stick the kettle on...

singer Danny Addison on his musical journey that has led to debut album, Porcelain

As we go through life, we shatter, then piece ourselves back together again. We find what we need to rebuild, and in that process, we become stronger. Di erent but the same. Porcelain, Danny Addison’s remarkable debut album, takes fragments of his journey – both musical and personal – and creates the full picture so far, the culmination of all of his ideas and experiences.

Blending elements of alt-rock with cinematic soundscapes, along with his evocative storytelling and unique cadence, the album delves into thought-provoking themes of arrogance, narcissism, trauma, forgiveness and discovery. An extraordinary songwriter, Danny’s songs have a profound and fundamental honesty at their core.

“I think it's taken a long time, but I finally found a sound that is mine,” Danny says of the album. “There were so many new things to come to terms with, from arranging the string parts and thinking about the lyrics – everything was brand new. It was very much a case of, if I don’t make this decision, it’s not going to happen. So it was a scary thing, in a way, but also very exciting.”

Born into a music-loving family in Hitchin, Danny and his two brothers were encouraged to pursue their passions from a young age. “I think my mum always wanted to be able

Young Monarch gave him an opportunity to figure out what kind of role he wanted to take. “I’m so grateful for that time – we had some amazing opportunities and loads of great gigs. I miss it in some ways, but going solo felt like I was taking control of my own destiny.”

to play, and so she was keen for us to have some kind of skill – I started learning the violin when I was five,” he recalls. The violin continues to play a vital role in his work today, conveying much of the emotional acuity of songs such as Stains and The Dune

“I grew up listening to groups of players in orchestras but it’s not something you hear so much in contemporary music,” Danny says. “I also really enjoy playing – but string arranging was brand new to me, so I thought, why not just try it? I’m really happy with how it turned out on Porcelain, and now we perform live with a violin and viola player – it’s a lot of fun.”

Taking the lead in his own musical project wasn’t something that came naturally to Danny, at first, having grown up playing in school bands then later, at university in Manchester, where he studied at the Royal Northern College of Music. There, he lent his skills to the alt-pop band Young Monarch, performing around the UK including at the Royal Albert Hall, and working with renowned industry figures including Lael Goldberg and producer Roy Kerr.

Around the same time, he collaborated with fellow artists such as Chloe Foy and singersongwriter Sophie Morgan during her support tour with Seafret. “These were all formative experiences, especially with the band because there was a point where we were o ered some crazy record deal,” he remembers. “I don’t know what I’d be doing now if I’d accepted it, but I’m glad we didn’t do it!”

By 2020, Danny had released his debut EP, the remarkable Colour Songs, which o ered nuanced contemplations of infatuation and resentment. “When it came to writing about my experiences of relationships, it was always about those longer-term situations, exploring the periods where resentment can begin to creep in, as opposed to that heady rush of feelings when you first meet someone,” he explains. It was recorded from two bedrooms, with his brother and frequent collaborator Tom mixing and producing.

Songwriting such as Danny’s is a rare find, but something audiences are increasingly seeking out as music becomes one of the few places of solace in the chaos and confusion of today’s world. He has an innate gift for singing aloud those questions we might be afraid to voice ourselves. This is no more evident than on And If, a quiet musing on death and the memories we leave behind.

“The fear of being forgotten is why so many people dedicate their lives to being famous, or achieving great things,” he explains.

“This song explores whether being thought of fondly and with kindness is enough.”

Danny knows this all too well, having relied “so much on forgiveness from those in my life… in focusing on my own personal pursuits, I worry whether I have o ended those I love and cherish.” We hear the gentle creak of the pedals as sombre piano notes land like clock chimes. “And if my wilted heart is hard to take, will you be mine, body and mind, for the years that lie in wait?” he questions. “And if my patience wanes from light to shade, will you remember me as kind in my final days?” It’s testament to how attuned Danny is with the world around him, that he can create a record such as Porcelain. Its incredible empathy not only leads us to the important questions in life – it makes us feel closer to the answers, too.

Absolutely explores the finest spots for brunch across Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire boasts a vibrant brunch scene, o ering a delightful mix of traditional English breakfasts, international flavours, and innovative culinary creations. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty meal, a light bite, or a bottomless brunch experience, the county has something to satisfy every palate.

HATCH, ST ALBANS

hatchstalbans.com

Located in the heart of St Albans, Hatch is renowned for its inventive brunch o erings. Signature dishes include the "Dirty Reuben" and bu alo chicken benedict, alongside classics like avocado toast and wa es. On our last visit, we couldn’t get enough of the Halloumi Avo Bun: halloumi, avocado, chilli jam, rocket, all in a brioche bun.

The café’s commitment to quality and creativity – as well as the warm welcome you can expect every single time you visit – has made it a favourite among locals and visitors alike.

THE GROUNDWORKS, HITCHIN

thegroundworks.co.uk

This award-winning café in Hitchin emphasizes sustainability and local sourcing. Brunch highlights feature peach French toast and the hearty Groundworks

breakfast. At Absolutely, we have recently been on a gym frenzy to get in shape for the summer, so The Groundworks’ dedicated eggs menu has certainly come in handy. Their Nduja Fried Eggs are quite something, a real kick start to the day, with lemon and garlic labneh, crispy capers, dill, pickles, and sourdough toast on the side. With clear menus catering to various dietary needs, The Groundworks is a welcoming spot for all.

FISHERY WHARF CAFÉ, HEMEL HEMPSTEAD

fisherywharfcafe.co.uk

Nestled along the Grand Union Canal, Fishery Wharf Café o ers picturesque waterside views paired with a full

breakfast/brunch menu. We particularly love having a leisurely stroll along the canal to Boxmoor Common and back again to work up an appetite for some of their specials. Kudos has to go to their two unique approaches to bubble & squeak: Bubble, Garlic Mushrooms, Bacon & Eggs, and Bubble, Salt Beef, Black Pudding & Eggs. Double bubble indeed.

THE WAFFLE HOUSE, ST ALBANS

wa ehouse.co.uk

The Wa e House – located within a 16th century watermill on the River Ver –o ers an extensive menu of teas, co ees, milkshakes, pancakes, and of course wa es (both savoury and sweet). When we visited, we wanted to experience both sides, so opted for the Bacon Wa e Stack – two wa es, free-range streaky bacon, served with butter and syrup – and the Blueberry & Cream Stack – two wa es with wild blueberry compote, fresh whipped Chantilly cream and fresh blueberries –which instigated a passionate ‘sweet or savoury?’ argument. We say just have both.

THE ABBOTS CAFE KITCHEN, ST ALBANS

stalbanscathedral.org/cafe

Now, if this was rated on settings, you’d be hard pressed to find a more stunning place for brunch than this. The Abbots Café Kitchen in St Albans Cathedral is the perfect place to enjoy tea and something to kick start your day. Fresh seasonal ingredients from sustainable sources are used and dishes are prepared and cooked on site – a joy to eat and made with love. Outside seating is also available with beautiful views of the Norman Tower.

“The brunch menu brings modern flair to historic surroundings”

TOAST, ST ALBANS

toaststalbans.com

Toast is an informal, cosy spot providing a range of favourite flavours on – you’ve got it – toast, creating a comforting and nostalgic brunch experience. And don’t expect the usuals of eggs or beans on toast. Two of our favourites are Chimi Steak – marinated rump steak, chimichurri, fried egg, hash browns, on thick cut sourdough – and the Chilli Chorizo Eggs - three scrambled eggs, chorizo, ‘nduja oil, red chilli, on thick cut sourdough.

The award-winning restaurant also o ers an extensive drinks menu which includes beer, wine, bubbles and cocktails. Probably too much for the start of the day, but a very good reason to return as evening closes in.

MARMALADE, ST ALBANS

hatchstalbans.com/marmalade

Marmalade serves speciality co ee paired with brunch classics with a subtle French influence and bagel house, Brad & Dills, dishes up the tastiest bagel combos from their quirky location which was once the dry cleaners.

Marmalade is the sister cafe to Hatch, located in their former site around the corner on Holywell Hill.

If you have tried one, make sure to sample the other, you won’t regret it.

BILL’S, ST ALBANS

bills-website.co.uk

We at Absolutely are always keen to champion independents, which dominate this list, but we do have room for the brands who just simply do brunch very well indeed. Considering you can find Bill’s near the cathedral and Roman ruins, it is rather apt that they serve up modern feasts in such an ancient city. The St Albans brunch menu brings contemporary flair to historic surroundings, with squidgy sourdough, smoked streaky bacon and the sizzling 6oz minute steak, just a few of our favourites. Whether you’re exploring the Verulamium Museum or shopping in the market, Bill’s is the perfect morning sanctuary to build up energy for the day ahead.

THE FLORIST, WATFORD

theflorist.uk.com

The Florist believes in the fundamental principles of floristry, to charm each of the senses.

As soon as you enter you are greeted by a chic interior that is a joy to see, before the smells from the kitchen waft up your

nostrils. A good start – and that’s before you peruse the diverse brunch menu. Brunch is priced at £35 per person, on Fridays and Saturdays 10am-2pm, with unlimited drinks for 90 minutes. Drinks include glasses of Prosecco, all draught beers and ciders, Aperol Spritz, Bloody Mary, Espresso Martini and more.

On our visit two dishes won us over: the Shakshuka – baked eggs, harissa tomato sauce and spice-roasted chickpeas served with toasted sourdough – and the Avocado Toast – smashed avocado, roasted field mushroom, spice-roasted chickpeas and crispy chilli oil on toasted sourdough. This is definitely a taste sensation.

HATFIELD HOUSE, HATFIELD

hatfield-house.co.uk

Located in the beautiful setting of Stable Yard within Hatfield Park, the Coach House Kitchen is a contemporary yet cosy restaurant brimming with warmth and welcome.

Open to all, the restaurant sits with a picturesque courtyard view for al fresco dining in warmer weather and lovely indoor dining atmosphere for those colder days. Serving breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon teas, the Coach House Kitchen now o ers early evening dinner service and a variety of live music evenings to complete the experience.

Expect eggs prepared a host of ways, a Full English, Shakshuka, and our personal favourite, Halloumi & Avocado on Toast.

Q Why did you want to run The Hermit of Redcoats?

Meet the CHEF

“EVERYTHING ON OUR MENU IS A CAREFULLY CONSIDERED ADDITION TO THE HERMIT OFFER"

A The opportunity to take on the Hermit came up whilst I was running our first pub in Northamptonshire with my wife Anna. I know the Hermit well, having worked here around a decade ago as sous chef. The Hermit presented as an opportunity for progression for us as it has a bigger capacity alongside being in a more densely populated area, which is known for having excellent food and drink establishments. I also know the potential of The Hermit having been part of the team that saw it win in the Hertfordshire Food & Drink Awards 2014. We saw the chance to establish ourselves in Hertfordshire and grow our business – since then we have not looked back.

Q How have you approached the menus?

A The first thing we consider is seasonality, which ingredients are available and at their best. This forms the base for our dishes. Next we look at trends, and we balance this with what can be delivered consistently at a high standard. We are always looking to push ourselves outside of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves to create bespoke and unique dishes using a combination of our experience as a kitchen team and the resources available to us. Lastly, and probably most importantly, each dish has to be something I would want to order on a menu when dining out. No dish is a ‘filler’. Everything on our menu is a carefully considered addition to the Hermit o er.

Q How key are local suppliers?

A Local suppliers are key in ensuring we are a sustainable business. We have the BII sustainability award for our commitment to having a business which works to minimise our carbon footprint. Furthermore, working with smaller, local suppliers means we are supporting small UK based businesses, which in a di cult economic time is essential. It also means we can build repertoire and have relationships which allow us to be well informed on products, aware of new products entering the market and utilise this within our business.

Q Do you have any summer events/ specials on the horizon?

A This is our first summer in the pub and we are so excited to open our beer garden, including a new garden menu, outdoor bar (opening soon!) and an a la carte menu served in our outdoor dining space at the front of the pub and for customers, their families and four legged friends to come and enjoy the space!

New Star

English Chardonnay, but not as you know it. Nutbourne Vineyard in West Sussex has just dropped a barrel-fermented beauty - rich, textured, and layered with ripe stone fruit, lemon curd, and a gentle hit of oak. TA Rosé Reboot

Just in time for summer sipping, English wine brand Folc has dropped its first-ever multi-vintage rosé. Blending two harvests for extra depth and balance, it’s still the same pale pink bottle we know and love – only smarter. Think wild berries, crisp citrus, and serious picnic potential. Fresh, elegant, and thoroughly modern, it’s English rosé done right. drinkfolc.com

ucked away in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, High Clandon Estate is a boutique vineyard with serious sparkle – and not just in the glass. Founded in 2014 by Bruce and Sibylla Tindale, this 12acre estate benefits from ideal southfacing slopes where mineral-rich soil produces exceptional quality fruit. Their vintage-only cuvées boast an impressive pedigreetraditional method, bottle-aged for over five years, and every bit as refined as Champagne (dare we say, even better?).

But there’s more than bubbles on o er. High Clandon is known for its immersive vineyard experiences - we’re talking soul-soothing yoga sessions among the vines, sculpture exhibitions, and tru e hunts that pair earthy delicacies with estate wines. Don’t miss Jazz in the Vineyard on 7th June, a one-night-only soirée where music meets the meadow. Expect sultry sax, sparkling wine, and serious atmosphere, all in aid of local charity Cherry Trees. If you like your fizz with a side of culture and countryside charm, this is one summer event not to miss.

EDITOR’S PICK healing process. Each treatment

here are a lot of terrible eyebrows out there. And a lot of beautiful ones. Getting it right is the di erence between looking your best and looking awful – or just strange. I have been worrying about my brows for some time – why so sparse? Are they disappearing? – and pencilling them in daily is not my best skill. But when I meet Karen Betts’ assistant, Sue, in London, I’m maybe a bit defensive, because I know exactly what I don’t want. No heavy, angular brows for me please. No brows that look like they’ve been done. I needn’t have worried. Karen is all about the natural brow – and she will in fact refuse to deliver those terrible eyebrows that I fear. Even if I wanted them. Many of her clients come to her with alopecia, or after cancer treatment, because her skill lies in creating beautiful, and – importantly – natural-looking brows. “Less is more,” she says. The process is essentially tattooing, she says – and it’s less painful than threading. First she draws on what she thinks my brows should look like, and we negotiate a bit on length and width – and then she uses her personally designed ink tool to imprint the colour on my brows. It takes about ten minutes in total and feels a bit scratchy – but chatting to Karen is so entertaining that I barely notice. Immediate results are far more intense than the final fade, and for the next few days I receive helpful texts updating me on the healing process. Each treatment requires a single top up in a few weeks, so watch this space.

OUT IN TO

How to bring your indoor interior personality outdoors

There’s a shift happening in how we think about outdoor living. Gone are the days when patios, terraces, and balconies were simply practical spaces, furnished with muted, neutral-toned wicker chairs and standard wooden tables. As we embrace more intentional living, both inside and out, the lines between our interior and exterior design needs are blurring. Outdoor furniture is no longer just a functional item, but a considered purchase which should blend seamlessly with the interiors inside your home.

Consumers are investing more into their homes and the garden is no exception. At Greycaine we are seeing the importance of design in the outdoor space. Traditionally the focus may have stopped at landscaping, but now outdoor furniture has become the

protagonist as consumers are looking to elevate their outdoor experience.

We spend so much time curating the right colours, textures, and furniture that reflect who we are. Whether you prefer bold and eclectic, soft and serene, or timeless and minimalist, your interior space is an extension of your personality. So why should your outdoor space feel like an afterthought?

Bringing your indoor interior personality outdoors is more than a design trend. It’s about treating your patio, balcony, terrace, or garden with the same care and creativity you give your living room or bedroom. And thanks to new innovations in materials, weather-resistant fabrics, and design, that transformation is easier than ever.

One of the most exciting developments in outdoor living is the choice of furniture that mirrors the comfort and style of interior design. We’re seeing sofas with

“We are seeing the importance of design in the outdoor space”

sculptural silhouettes, and ottomans with intricate detailing, that wouldn’t look out of place in a modern living room, yet they are engineered to be outside. Built to withstand sun, rain, and changing seasons, they offer durability without compromising on aesthetics. Most importantly, they are expertly designed to ensure the same comfort you would expect from a piece of furniture purchased for a living room.

This season, Greycaine turns this convention on its head. The new collection is a deliberate and joyful departure from the ordinary, introducing vibrant hues, sculptural shapes, and fabrics that evoke a sense of interior luxury while withstanding the elements. Think matcha green oversized daybeds, modular lounges in cobalt blue, bold accent chairs with contrasting piping plus contrasting cushions and side and occasional tables. These aren’t just pieces of furniture; they’re expressions of personality. A perfect example of this is our Petalo daybed that is reminiscent of a flower and adds a pop of colour and an injection of fun into any space. Designed with three padded petals of different sizes, all of which are adjustable, ensures maximum comfort and will seamlessly fit into any setting from an urban terrace to a modern garden.

This shift in design opens up endless possibilities and allows consumers to curate their space with their own style as

whatever your indoor style there’s now an outdoor version to match.

Welcome to a world where your garden becomes a gallery, your patio a playful retreat, and your balcony an extension of your inner style. With a bold combination of unexpected materials, playful forms, and a daring use of colour, this spring/ summer, Greycaine invites you to bring your interior personality outside.

HOW TO UNLEASH YOUR INSIDER INTERIOR ENERGY OUTSIDE

1 ACCESSORIZE, ACCESSORIZE, ACCESSORIZE

Approach your outside space as you would an indoor space. Just as layering materials brings depth to a living room, doing the same outdoors can create a tactile, immersive experience. Add interest by layering throws, cushions, side tables and pieces of interest. Introduce colour by placing your favourite vases and books on tables and even incorporate photo frames to really personalise your outdoor space. Add lighting with battery operated lamps as an elegant finishing touch.

2TAYLOR IT TO YOUR NEEDS

Do you love hosting? If so, invest in modular furniture which can be moved and adapted for any occasion. Whether you’re entertaining a crowd or enjoying a quiet evening outdoors,

modular pieces offer the flexibility to rearrange your space with ease. Add in a few well placed occasional tables so guests always have somewhere to place glasses. If you have a smaller space, then choose pieces which you love and will work for you and your requirements.

3CREATING CONTINUITY AND FLOW

The most successful indoor-outdoor spaces feel connected, not just in layout, but in mood. This can be as simple as using the same colour inside and out or maintaining a consistent design throughout. This thoughtful transition helps blur the line between house and garden, making your outdoor area feel like a true extension of home.

4MAKE IT YOURS

This is your space to enjoy, it’s another zone of the house and should reflect who you are. Mix bold shapes, try new textures, bring out your favourite colours and, above all, make it feel like home.

As SEHBAC customers the Thomases discovered, by focussing on quality and attention to detail, a conservatory can be anything you want it to be

You can put up with a lot when you move home if the new place has more of what you want than the old, but sooner or later you’re going to look at improvements.

For Rob Thomas, their 1980s conservatory was an obvious candidate.

“It was fairly typical of conservatories of the era,” he says. “Poorly insulated and not very well constructed with a perspex roof – you could be in there in the summer, but it wasn’t really a

usable part of the house for the rest of the year.”

A lot of older conservatories have a tacked-on appearance and an uninviting quality. The Thomases’ conservatory never really felt part of the house. “It was like half an outbuilding, with a cold, tiled floor – not very pleasant,” Rob adds.

“What we wanted was a stronger connection to the rest of the house, with doors through to the dining room to give it the potential to be a more flowing space.”

Seeing different suppliers can help to refine your ideas as well as build your confidence. While the Thomases had clear objectives for the improvement, they found the process of selecting a supplier helped to focus attention on quality and on getting exactly what they wanted.

They evaluated companies based on their professionalism, attention to detail, and ability to handle the specific challenges of the project. Ultimately, the professional approach of SEHBAC’s people and a lot of outstanding Trustpilot reviews were factors in the decision, rather than just focusing on the lowest price.

“I do think it’s important to be willing to pay a bit more for quality work,” Rob believes. In the end, a slightly more expensive project that gives you exactly what you want is worth the investment: “You’re going to live with it for a long time after the cost has ceased to be an issue.”

The rebuilt conservatory transformed a

“It has totally changed the way we live here, creating a much more flexible space”

previously redundant part of their home into a stunning, enjoyable living space.

The new design offered a lot of improvements to the Thomases home. New construction materials and methods created a better insulated room with a bright, clear roof, and bi-folding doors. Now the conservatory is integrated to the existing building.

It’s changed the way they use the house. Not only do they now use the conservatory more of the time, they’ve found they even use the connecting dining room much more. “It’s totally changed the way we live here, creating a much more flexible space for living and for entertaining.”

Summer is here, and it’s time to bring bright, bold, beautiful colours into your kitchen. At Moneyhill Interiors, they love pairing striking primary shades – perfect for kitchen islands – with elegant neutral tones that create a timeless and sophisticated atmosphere throughout the rest of the kitchen. And the best part? An island is easy to update, with a quick paint, giving your space a fresh new feel without the cost of repainting the entire kitchen. Bright blues, light blues, striking greens and bright oranges and yellows complement stainless steel particularly well, so it’s worth noting that it’s a great blend using materials and colours that really work together.

When you instruct Moneyhill Interiors to take a brief (which incidentally doesn’t cost you anything) they very carefully listen to your wishes and needs for your particular kitchen. They listen if you want seating round an island, and they listen if you do not want seating round an island! They listen if you would like a soft seating area, a children’s play area or a small desk, or area for household maintenance. If you have a boiler that needs to be rehoused or an RSJ put in position they can help with those too.

way that feels considered but never overdone.

This summer, the Westbourne Collection sets the tone indoors. A circular coffee table with a dark mango wood fluted base and forest-green marble top, it’s designed to sit beautifully in both modern and traditional spaces. It’s bold, but never overwhelming. The marble brings a rich, tactile surface to any room, while the craftsmanship of the wood base adds texture and warmth. Pair it with the matching dining table for a cohesive, elegant look that flows across open-plan spaces.

Outside, things are just as well thought through. The new Valentina Lounge Set is designed with generous proportions –something that sets it apart from most outdoor furniture. A sage-green powdercoated aluminium frame supports wide armchairs, a three-seater sofa, and a matching coffee table. Soft curves and

weather-resistant cushions make this set a practical and comfortable choice for long afternoons in the sun, or relaxed evenings with friends.

And if you’re after something a little more playful, the Karla Sunlounger returns this season with a new striped cushion in a limited-edition finish. Part of the much-loved Karla collection, it’s crafted in a soft-toned Ever Weave with a realistic rattan-style texture. The classic shape and durable design make it ideal for balconies, terraces or garden corners – especially when paired with the matching side table.

From indoor statement pieces to relaxed, high-quality garden furniture, Atkin and Thyme’s Summer 2025 collection is all about easy elegance – designed to be used, loved and lived with.

Baden-Württemberg: the must visit German state for all gastronomes, culturati and fashionistas

The south-western state of BadenWürttemberg in Germany has always been popular with Europeans due to its proximity to neighbouring countries. More recently, it’s been growing in popularity amongst the British contingent, as we increasingly discover the plethora of dining, shopping and cultural activities on o er. Here, we take a look at four diverse cities that would make the perfect road or train trip.

KARLSRUHE

A city that is the dictionary definition of a hidden gem. You have the groundbreaking ZKM Center for Art and Media, the digital artwork-focused museum which includes very hip art installations, and an exhibition aimed at gamers that includes the best of all retro game consoles from Atari to Gameboy. Karlsruhe is a city filled with fashionable cafes and innovative restaurants if you know where to look for them. You can experience the Scandi-cool of Iaro co ee whose minimalist design has been winning plaudits from residents. Whilst those who are origins-focused can get their co ee beans and fixes from Kä i Haus. Even though they are a small operation, they have invested over five figures in their own roastery and o er co ee beans from di erent continents. Local treats to try include Popice, a healthy-tasting, vegan ice cream found in bohemian cafes, like Yollie. You will find Franzbrötchen in artisan

cafes like Klauprecht. Appearance-wise, they look like a flattened croissant, but taste-wise they are sweet and resemble a cinnamon roll.

If you are looking for innovative cuisine, the fine dining establishment to visit is 5 SEN:SES by Mario Aliberti. The talented chef has infused his Italian menu with world flavours. You will see the likes of watermelon tartare with shoyu sauce and octopus cooked in dark beer along with a ponzu beurre blanc. Ingredients have been added to enhance flavours rather than just to create a more 'exotic' menu. Particularly of note is his onsen egg carbonara with the low temperature yolk lubricating the rich pasta dish.

STUTTGART

The capital of Baden-Württemberg is a thriving hub of modernity and remarkable history. Considering 80% of the city was bombed during World War II, expect to be bewildered by the economic miracle on display at the Mercedes-Benz Museum. The forward-thinking Kunstmuseum Stuttgart has exhibited mesmerising exhibitions such as "The Clock" by Christian Marclay. It is all about the breathtaking views when you dine in Stuttgart. On the top floor of Kunstmuseum Stuttgart you’ll find the Cube. Being nestled inside a 360-degree glass structure means this restaurant is literally the place to see and be seen. The eclectic international menu means you can pair a

KARLSRUHE ZKM © SCHWARZWALD TOURISMUS GMBH

spicy Thai soup starter with an octopus Paccheri. They serve a delicate low-temp egg ramen, which might be a culinary first.

The best views are from the top of Stuttgart TV tower perched on one of the many rolling hills of Stuttgart. When the tower was completed in 1956, it was the first of its kind and has led to many other replicas throughout Germany and across the world. It was famously visited by Queen Elizabeth II during a state visit back in 1965.

Apart from having an observation deck, they also have a restaurant called Leonhardts. If you book in advance, you can enjoy a 3-course Swabian menu that focuses on seasonality, such as a white asparagus soup during springtime. Not only will you see why Stuttgart is one of the greenest cities in Germany, you can observe the fluctuating colours of the skyline if you visit during the sunset hour.

FREIBURG

This ultra-green and free-spirited city has a vibrant energy, thanks to the significant student population in the area. Most locals shop at the Münstermarkt around the cathedral. In the springtime, it is all about

their asparagus, whilst summer is all about strawberries, and in autumn, their focus is on their cherries and in particular cherry liqueur, a key component of making a Black Forest gateau.

You can tour the market stalls and taste the fresh produce straight away. Two must-try dishes are the cheesecakes from Stefan’s Käsekuchen, and local specialty, Die Lange Rote. The former is a favourite with the locals. Apart from the classic, they o er quirky flavours like "Eton Mess" or "Cookies’n’Cream". With the latter, Die Lange Rote isn’t a simple hot dog. The sausage is red, skinless and measures a generous 35cm long. Grocery shoppers enjoy it as a snack to provide energy.

The food scene o ers a fine balance between history and modernity. The Großer Meyerhof is an institution that has been around since the mid-19th century. It was formerly a beer factory, but nowadays locals go there to enjoy classic schnitzels and maultasche, a sizeable Swabian meat-filled dumpling. Their jazz nights are particularly popular and take place on the first Wednesday of each month. If you are looking for more diverse o erings, visit

the Markthalle, which is directly opposite The Großer Meyerhof. Here you will find cuisines ranging from Persia to Vietnam and all are very reasonably priced.

METZINGEN

It is all about Outletcity Metzingen for our last stop. It is the largest outlet in Europe with over 170 brands in more than 130 stores. It is very much an upscale experience with the likes of Bollicine & Co. Champagne Bar, which won an award for being the most beautiful bar of 2024. They have the world’s largest BOSS outlet store at over 5,000 square metres. In fact, the birth of Outletcity Metzingen was due to the fact Hugo Boss has always been headquartered in the city.

There are 14 restaurants and bars, but if you want to dine on the Swabian cuisine of the region, you must check out Almresi. They deliver on alpine cosiness with a chalet-style design, including ski lifts cabins as dining tables on their terrace. They have eye-catching artwork from renowned Black Forest artist, Sebastian Wehrle. Whether you are ordering their iconic schnitzels or a Caesar salad, expect incredibly generous portion sizes.

HOW TO GET THERE

The airport hub to the region is via Stuttgart airport. There are up to four weekly flights from Manchester and Edinburgh. There are daily flights from London (Heathrow) to Stuttgart. You can find the ideal flight schedule at flughafenstuttgart.de/ankunft-abflug/flugplan.

It is extremely easy to get to Stuttgart city from the airport. You can either hire a rental car with one of the eight companies at the arrivals hall or you can take the S-bahn to Stuttgart main station in 27 minutes. Finally, you can also take the U6 subway, which takes approximately 30 minutes. From Stuttgart main station, it is also incredibly easy to reach Metzingen, Karlsruhe and Freiburg by train, making the train a convenient and sustainable way to explore all of Baden-Württemberg.

The state-of-the-art airport o ers smart lanes when you depart. This means you can book a timeslot to pass through security. They also o er self-bag drop, observation deck and serene lounges to relax in.

NICK CALE

HEAD OF SIXTH

Q How has the school year gone for you so far?

A It has been an incredible year to begin my headship, marked by the much-anticipated opening of our new Sixth Form centre – the Zaha Hadid Building. It’s a truly transformational space, designed to equip our students for the next stage of their journey beyond Berkhamsted.

Q Why were you originally attracted to the Head of Sixth role?

A This role has always appealed to me for its blend of academic challenge and pastoral care, supporting students at a pivotal point in their educational journey. It’s a unique role in many ways – one that o ers the privilege of witnessing young people make significant life decisions and then commit to them with impressive maturity in a short space of time.

Q What does Berkhamsted o er that makes your Sixth Form provision stand out?

A Two things that make Berkhamsted Sixth such a

“It is a pivotal point for our students”

special place are the breadth of opportunities and the strength of its community. Whether your interests lie in academic societies, the arts, outdoor education, or sport, there is something here for everyone. But what truly sets it apart is the sense of community – a supportive environment in which everyone can achieve their potential and be themselves.

Q What are students prepared for once they leave you?

A Students leave Berkhamsted Sixth as confident, capable individuals, ready to make a di erence, be that through the traditional university pathway or the growing route of degree apprenticeships. During their time here, they embrace school life, find their voice, and grow both academically and personally, emerging ready to contribute to the world beyond the walls of Berkhamsted.

TOM HOCKEDY

Q It’s very early days in terms of your role as Head of Boys at Berkhamsted. But how have you settled in?

A I have thoroughly enjoyed my welcome back to Castle Campus and Berkhamsted Boys. Having been at the school for over 10 years and having had the opportunity to work in all three of our senior schools, it is lovely to come back to the Boys’ School where it all started for me. I have been most impressed by the boys and their drive to do well for themselves. There is still a lot to look forward to as our plans begin to evolve, and as we build and develop our o ering so we can continue to allow the boys to thrive and flourish beyond their GCSEs. I am excited for what the future holds.

Q What attracted you to the position?

A I have always wanted to be a Headteacher, and having worked in a number of schools, what is most impressive about Berkhamsted is its drive to

do the right thing for all the pupils in our care. There is a genuine desire to enable pupils to do well for themselves and for them to develop as well-rounded individuals where they can develop their own individual talents.

Q What kind of Headteacher are you?

A Firm, fair, kind and supportive are some of the adjectives I would hope people would use to describe me. People know I have high standards, but this is balanced with wanting pupils to have fun. I want them to enjoy school, while being provided with a firm foundation for both challenge and success.

Q What are you looking forward to over the next couple of months?

A I am looking forward to getting to know all of the pupils and learning about the pupil experience from their perspective as well as meeting with parents. I am a strong believer in us all working together, which is fostered by developing strong relationships.

JO VILA

HEAD OF GIRLS

Q How excited are you about taking over as Head of Girls at Berkhamsted later this year?

A I am absolutely thrilled to take on this role, especially as Berkhamsted Girls’ School holds such a special place in my heart. My time as a pupil here was incredibly formative, and I will always be grateful for the unwavering support, the dedication of the sta , and the countless opportunities that helped shape my journey. Returning to a school with such a forward thinking and ambitious community – one whose values so closely reflect my own – is truly an honour.

Q Why were you keen on the role?

A Berkhamsted is a school that never stands still. It is constantly evolving, always striving to improve and focusing on unlocking each pupil’s potential. I strongly believe in the power of self-discovery, character development, and the importance of using one’s voice to make a positive impact. Whether through academic excellence, pastoral

care, or co-curricular experiences, Berkhamsted empowers its pupils to succeed and grow into confident, resilient young women.

Q What kind of Headteacher can we expect when you start?

A I will be pupil-centred, energetic, and involved in every aspect of school life. I’ll be visible and approachable, ensuring both students and sta feel heard and valued. Listening will be at the core of my leadership – whether it’s understanding concerns, celebrating successes, or shaping the future of the school.

Q What else are you looking forward to?

A Learning should be engaging and fun, and I look forward to bringing enthusiasm and vibrancy to my leadership. I won’t just observe; I’ll actively participate, getting stuck into school life and truly understanding the pupil journey from all angles. My goal is to foster an environment where students feel supported, inspired, and excited to learn every day – where pupils come first, energy drives progress, and leadership is as dynamic as the students it serves.

Unique EXPERIENCES

National Boarding Week: a celebration of boarding brilliance

Each summer, the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) calls upon the boarding community to participate in the largest UK celebration of boarding in the school calendar.

National Boarding Week 2025, sponsored by Schoolblazer, is due to take place between 16th-22nd June and comprises an action-packed week of challenges, competitions and activities for all students to enjoy. The celebration was launched in 2017 and brings awareness to the unique experience boarding has to o er. The activities are designed to showcase the enjoyment of boarding, create special memories for boarders during their time at school and reinforce the value of boarding education in shaping well-rounded individuals.

BSA member schools are invited to run a series of challenges and activities in their boarding houses and school grounds. Stories are shared across social media throughout the week, building to a vibrant showcase of photos and videos of smiling faces, friendships, togetherness and community. Activities have included everything and

anything from sporting activities, quizzes, team pursuits, sustainability initiatives and local community schemes. Fortunately, the June dates coincide with the UK’s Summer Solstice, which is the perfect opportunity for schools to embrace outdoor activities including overnight camping, outdoor film club or house picnics – weather permitting! This year, schools will be participating in the following activities:

Monday: National Fudge Day

Tuesday: Mini Golf Competition

Wednesday: Big Art Challenge

Thursday: House Taskmaster

Friday: Summer Solstice Camp Out

Saturday: World Music Day

Sunday: Self-care Sunday

All challenges and activities are designed with inclusivity in mind, ensuring there is something for all talents, skills and interests. Schools are also welcome to interpret activities in their own way and use their imaginations and resources.

Director of BSA, David Walker, says: “National Boarding Week is a special

time in the boarding calendar for schools to connect with communities, embrace the fun in boarding and recognise the every-day joy in the boarding experience. National Boarding Week is approaching its tenth anniversary and it has been wonderful to see it grow each year and become a tradition for many schools.”

BSA’s National Boarding Week truly is a celebration of boarding brilliance and we can’t wait to see how our schools mark the occasion.

Transforming

LIVES

Boarding in the modern world: a fresh perspective at Lockers Park

At Lockers Park, the Boarding House has undergone a dynamic transformation since 2021 under the leadership of our dedicated House Parents, Mr and Mrs Newman. Their mission was twofold: to reinvigorate the Boarding House for current pupils and to encourage a wider range of boys to experience the many benefits of boarding life.

Crucial to their success was a thorough data-driven approach. Mr and Mrs Newman undertook extensive research to identify the elements that contribute to a successful and supportive boarding environment. This work informed the introduction of the Boarding Pathway, a bespoke programme designed to help boys build independence, resilience, and life skills. The Pathway also o ers an accessible and exciting introduction to boarding for Flexi and non-boarders.

A key feature of this new approach is the Boarding Passport, which sets out seven developmental targets for each year group. These carefully structured goals – such as leading a boarding meeting or organising an event for younger pupils – encourage personal growth, leadership and community spirit. Pupils who complete all their targets are rewarded with an invitation to the annual Boarding Bonanza, a much-anticipated celebration of their achievements.

The Boarding House culture has also been rejuvenated through a vibrant events programme. Creative and inclusive activities like House of Hogwarts, cooking competitions, treasure hunts, The Battle of the Boys, and seasonal themed nights have helped to generate enthusiasm and a real sense of camaraderie. Participation is strong, not only among boarders but across the entire school community.

In line with their commitment to fostering a nurturing and focused environment, Mr and Mrs Newman have introduced a smartphone-free policy within the Boarding House. This initiative encourages boys to engage more deeply with each other and participate wholeheartedly in the diverse range of activities available.

The impact of these initiatives is clear. Mr and Mrs Newman were delighted to exceed Lockers Park’s boarding targets, with 82% of pupils having boarded at least once within their first term – a powerful testament to the welcoming, engaging environment they have created. Feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive.

As we look to the future, boarding at Lockers Park will continue to evolve. With a commitment to innovation and a deep understanding of the modern child, our Boarding House is not only keeping pace with the times – it is setting the standard for what boarding in the modern world can and should be.

Roman Theatre Open Air Festival

History, theatre and music combine as the spectacle returns to St Albans for its 11th year

Presented by acclaimed theatre production company OVO, the 2025 Roman Theatre Open Air Festival promises an unforgettable season of bold, imaginative and dynamic performances in one of the UK’s most breathtaking, historic settings.

Since its inception in 2014, the festival has grown into one of the largest outdoor festivals in the country, drawing over 15,000 visitors each year. Set against the simply stunning backdrop of the Roman Theatre of Verulamium, this eagerly anticipated open-air festival takes place in the UK’s oldest producing theatre, dating all the way back to 140 AD.

With innovative adaptations of classic plays and vibrant musical performances, the 2025 season is set to be another sell-out success – making it a highlight of the summer arts calendar.

Shakespeare is at the heart of the Roman Theatre programme and OVO is delighted to present its dazzling 1970s musical adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by its artistic director Adam Nichols, which will transport audiences to the glittering age of disco. This will be followed by a lively, interactive, and comedic production of Hamlet, presented by Roman Theatre favourites, The Pantaloons.

Classic plays this summer will include Red Shift founder Jonathan Holloway’s directing debut for OVO with his adaptation of Victor Hugo’s epic story of love, injustice and redemption, Les Misérables. A fresh take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, directed by OVO associate director Kelly Ann Stewart, will be performed with a live jazz soundtrack capturing the energy and excess of the 1920s.

OVO is thrilled to support youth and local community theatre groups. Hertfordshire-based theatre company Act 4 presents A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a brilliant, nonstop musical comedy. Meanwhile, OVO’s critically acclaimed youth ensemble returns with a gripping adaptation of William Golding’s classic tale of survival and human nature, Lord of the Flies

This summer’s festival also features a range of live music nights, including an evening with Mark Morriss of The Bluetones, a night of The Rolling Stones music from Ver Players Ukulele Group, and performances by live 80s Band – Our Friends Electric.

The venue is the only example of its kind in Britain, being a Roman theatre

with a stage rather than an Amphitheatre, making watching performances here all the more unique. Audiences can enjoy a diverse line-up of theatre and live music for all ages while soaking up the magic of this historic venue. With a fully stocked hill-top bar o ering a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, plus a variety of snacks and exceptional views, the festival is the perfect setting for a romantic evening, a night out with friends, or a great way for kids to experience live theatre and be outside away from their screens. Whether you’re a theatre lover, a history enthusiast, or simply looking for a magical summer night out, the 2025 Roman Theatre Open Air Festival is not to be missed.
