Time for a Noosa Jazz Party

WHEN THINGS ARE ALIVE THEY HUM – HANNAH BENT AS I sat down to write this month’s book review it occurred to me that, completely unplanned, all of my favorite novels this year have had love as a central theme. Particularly love for family, and most of them have explored all the emotions, conversations and long-term implications that accompany our earliest attachments. “When Things are Alive They Hum” introduces us to sisters Harper and Marlowe. Harper lives in Hong Kong, with her father, Grandmother and (as she puts it) her StepMonster. Harper loves Louis who is kind and sensitive and who makes her smile so big and wide that it hurts her cheeks. Harper has Up Syndrome – although people she meets insist on calling it Down Syndrome. It gives her an amazing capacity for wonder and lets her hear the hum that connects us all. Unfortunately, it has also given her a congenital heart defect and few options for recovery. Older sister Marlowe is living abroad, pursuing her studies, however upon learning that Harper’s heart is failing, Marlowe rushes home. Harper is denied a heart transplant in Hong Kong, so Marlowe investigates another option, taking her sister to China where the family could pay to access a transplant. This avenue is filled with questions and concerns, particularly around the organ donors – Marlowe is told that the organs come from executed prisoners, which she may be able to bear, however the volume of supply would indicate that there is more to the story. Marlowe is motivated by grief, consumed by the thought of losing her sister, and driven to explore all options. But, will anyone listen to Harper, who knows that her time is running out? THE Noosa Jazz Party is unique; unlike other jazz festivals, the Jazz Club only invites the best individual jazz musicians to play and forms them into ensembles to create exciting improvised jazz combinations. The centerpiece event will be four nights of jazz at The J theatre, Noosa Junction. Five ensemble sets performing each night starting on Wednesday August 31 and going through to Saturday September 3. “We will see more of these top interstate artists, along with 20 or more from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane at the Noosa Jazz Party, a festival of traditional jazz that will kick off with a special concert at the Majestic on Sunday August 28 and featuring world famous trumpeter, JonErik Kellso who is based in New York”,

according to Richard Stevens, Noosa Jazz Club’s President. “In addition to bringing Jon-Erik from overseas we will have Ian Date coming out from Ireland, playing his special brand of Gypsy Jazz to join up with his guitarplaying brother Nigel, and violinist George Washingmachine,” Richard said. There will be shows aboard sunset river cruises, in restaurants, bars and at the Noosa Marina. The Noosa Jazz Party’s final event will be a free public concert at the Riverstage, along the Noosa River on Fathers Day.
