THE BABUSHKA BOOK CLUB A MUSE AND A

JOIN Matilda Award-winning cabaret group Babushka for a musical deep dive into all things literary, playing at the Majestic Theatre, Pomona this June 25 as part of their Sunshine Coast tour.

The three unlikely bibliophiles of Babushka deconstruct the classics, try to look smarter than they are… and drink a lot of pinot grigio.

After performing to rapturous applause at Queensland Cabaret Festival, Melbourne Cabaret Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival, Babushka want to discuss some serious literature, sing some killer tunes and expand the membership of their bawdy book club.

The Babushka Book Club dives into the pages of your favourite novels, be it chick lit, the NY Times best seller, or the wellthumbed erotic thriller on your bedside table.

Be entertained by a wickedly funny cabaret that features the iconic music of Kate Bush and Bananarama through to Billie Eilish, as Babushka turn your best loved novels inside-out and colour them various shades of grey.

Babushka give Elizabeth Bennett a makeup tutorial, slap the handcuffs on Christian, and say ‘boy, bye!’ to Heathcliff. These licentious literary critics, (who totally read the book before they saw the movie), demand a fresh look at Jane Austen and some more snacks. Pass the brie!

The Babushka Book Club Sunshine Coast tour is presented by local performing arts company Red Chair with the support of Arts Queensland through the Touring Queensland Fund. Sunshine Coast Performance Dates Friday June 17: Eudlo Hall, Saturday June 18: Coolum Civic Centre, Friday June 24: Maleny Community Centre, Saturday June 25: The Majestic Theatre (Pomona), Sunday June 26: Saltwater Eco Tours (Mooloolaba) Full Event Details www.redchair.com.au M 15+ (Course language, adult themes)

MEMORIAL AT THE POMONA GALLERY

The delightful Molly Galpin has turned her creative energy to making dolls of fellow artists for her show ‘My Doll Muse’ at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery.

While she has been a 3D artist for many years, doll-making is a new pursuit for Molly.

“They’re so inspiring, all bringing their own style,” Molly said.

The dolls are created in mixed media, textiles, clay and recycled materials, lovingly hand-stitched and some painted. Come and meet them face-to-face in the Carriage Room, on show from June 4 to 29.

Also throughout June, the gallery will host a memorial exhibition of the works of a favourite local artist, the late Yvonne Thompson.

Yvonne started painting landscapes in New Zealand using oils and, after she arrived in Australia in 1970, took up watercolours.

‘In Memory of Yvonne Thompson’ is on show from May 28 to June 22. Pomona Railway Station Gallery 10 Station Street Pomona, open 10am4pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 2pm Saturday and Sunday.

Solo exhibition by Kerry Keyte

THE ART HUB Cooroy is proudly exhibiting works of art for Kerry Keyte – this is the first exhibition at the Hub showcasing works from only one artist.

Working in mixed media gives Kerry the ability to adapt and change her artwork inspired by the light and ocean lifestyle in the Sunshine Coast.

Her art has a reflective quality using light to bring up the colour and intensity in her artwork. She mainly works with resin, mosaic wood, surfboards and fused glass, upcycling old objects into works of art.

Most of her artwork is practical artwork that can be used and not just hung on the wall or placed on a shelf. Some of her creations are with ocean themes or dramatic overtones. She describes her artwork as evolving using influences of her travels and diving lifestyle. She is always experimenting looking for new ways of creating and having fun. Ensure to visit the Gallery to view Kerry’s amazing exhibition from May 20 to June 17. 3/2 Emerald Street, Cooroy. Phone 5447 6155
