AIA Young Architects Forum 2025 Annual Report

January 2026

Chair Message

Hello, happy end of one year and transition into the new,

The AIA Young Architects Forum (YAF) is proud to release its 2025 YAF Report detailing our initiatives and impact in the AIA and profession. We're fortunate to represent approximately 20,000 of AIA's nearly 100,000 members and serve alongside talented and passionate leaders in the AIA.

In the third year of our 2023-2027 Strategic Initiative of ‘Architects in Action, Catalyzing for Change,’ YAF has identified three Priority Areas in 2025 most relevant to supporting recently licensed architects:

1) Growth and Career Evolution

2) Steering the Future of the Profession

3) Driving Wellness: Mitigating Burning, Redefining Wellness.

This year, we’re thrilled to celebrate the following achievements, to name a few:

• The most YAF members to ever be represented in committee history (53 of 53 Young Architect Representatives selected, including Puerto Rico and Dubai) across seven time zones

• Continued ‘Taking Care of Business’ (formerly Mini MBA) at AIA’25 in Boston and at the 2025 NOMA Conference in Kansas City

• Organized and facilitated YAF’s first multi-generational discussion at AIA’25 in Boston, YAF: Bridging Generations

• Published two digital articles on AIA.org to expand YAF’s online presence

• Awarded the fourth recipient of the $10,000 Future Forward Grant through partnership with the AIA Large Firm Roundtable

• Developed Advocacy One Pager Series for distribution and access nationally

• Continued valuable programming, such as the Align Mentorship Program, Open Mic Nights, and more

• Maintained inclusion of a YAF representative to serve on each of the Strategic Council study areas

• Impactful local and regional programs and events leveraging YAF leadership

We also look forward to the following milestones in future years:

• YAF has long been a bridge from local and state emerging professional/young architect committees to national engagement. As we look to 2026, we look forward to the final development of the Best Practices resource to share the depth and breadth of engagements and programs these local, state, and national committees and representatives are engaged in. At the core of the YAF and the AIA as a whole are its members. We are excited to continue to amplify the incredible work and engagement across the entire organization.

• To chart our course for identifying our next Strategic Initiative, YAF has traditionally held summits every five years with the most recent summit held in 2022 in Pittsburgh, titled “Mission 2130.” We look forward to the next summit in 2027 to advance YAF’s evolving priorities and goals.

As we close this year, what stands out most is not just what we accomplished, but how we showed up amid acceleration, uncertainty, and an evolving profession that continues to ask more of those in the middle. This year reminded us that leadership does not always come from certainty, but from intention and from navigating through uncertainty; not from having all the answers, but from asking better questions and moving forward together.

The work of the Young Architects Forum this year reflects a profession in motion. One that is grappling honestly with growth and career evolution, intentionally steering toward a more equitable and resilient future, and beginning to redefine wellness not as an afterthought, but as a foundational part of practice. These efforts are not small, nor are they finished.

As we turn the page, may we continue to lead not by default, but by design. May we slow down where needed, accelerate where it counts, and remain committed to shaping a profession that supports both the impact of our work and the well-being of those who do it. The future of architecture is being shaped now - and mid-career architects are at the center of that change. As a reader of this report, we sincerely thank you as a supporter and advocate of YAF.

With gratitude,

2025 Priority Areas

Growth and Career Evolution

Young architects experience a pivotal career phase with unique challenges and opportunities. YAF prioritizes supporting professional and career growth and evolution in all types of career settings.

Steering the Future of the Profession

Through its dynamic network of members and representatives, YAF is uniquely positioned to identify and advocate for the current and future needs of young architects. YAF also serves as a voice to envision and steer the future of the profession and the future of architecture.

Driving Wellness: Mitigating Burnout, Redefining Wellness

YAF aims to address the topic of burnout and wellness, which disproportionately affects the young architect demographic. Through open conversation and resource distribution, YAF hopes to bring this important factor to light in 2025 and beyond.

YAF Values Leadership

Leadership is the practice of actively engaging recently licensed architects to affect positive change for the betterment of other members, their firms, their communities, and the Institute overall.

Mentorship

Mentorship is the bi-directional partnership of sharing knowledge, skills, information, and perspective to enhance professional and personal growth.

Collegiality

Collegiality is the exploration of connections, sharing similar interests, ideals, or experiences on equal terms.

ALIGN Mentorship Program

A partnership with YAF and COF, the Align Mentorship Program is a long-range initiative connecting young architects and AIA fellows nationally in pods or interest groups.

The program’s objectives are:

• To support young architects in defining their legacy within the profession while navigating their career paths.

• To create a vehicle for mentorship and career development that connects young architects and Fellows with peers across the country.

• To accelerate contributions of young architects and develop regionally diverse collectives to contribute more in the future.

The annual program has been onging since 2021 and currently supports dozens of members and provides valuable access to the profession’s most engaged leaders.

2025 Grants and Programs

Emerging Professional Friendly Firm Program

Started by YAF in 2020, this recognition program continues to be implemented at various state and local components to recognize architecture firms who support emerging professionals. Special thanks to former YAF leader Katelyn Chapin, AIA for developing this toolkit and recognition.

Countless AIA chapters and regions have adopted this program including AIA New England, AIA New York, AIA Pennsylvania, AIA Tennessee, AIA Oregon, AIA South Carolina, AIA Washington, AIA Minnesota, AIA North Carolina, AIA Dallas, AIA Arkansas, and AIA Iowa.

Practice Innovation Lab Toolkit

YAF Summit 25 in 2017 commemorated YAF's 25th year and was titled the Practice Innovation Lab (PIL). PIL inquired about how architects will adapt practice to advance the profession.

Building on the success of this program, former YAF leaders Matt Toddy, AIA and Katie Kangas, AIA authored a toolkit to instruct others on how to facilitate a PIL in their own city.

YAF leaders have developed their own Practice Innovation Labs in their own chapters and regions like AIA Ohio Valley Region, AIA Wisconsin, AIA DC, AIA Indiana, AIA Kentucky, AIA Michigan, AIA South Atlantic Region and at the AIA National Conference.

Evolutions of this program have emerged, such as the Practice Simulation Lab organized by YAF Community Director Seth Duke, AIA and Ohio YAR Alex Oetzel, AIA as recently as November 2025 at the AIA Colorado Practice + Design Conference.

YAF Redefinition Report

In 2022, YAF began studying whether the "Young Architects Forum" was the most relevant and accurate name for the committee. A Special Projects Focus Group was formed to study and analyze the potential for a new name. The group studied various options, gathered input from stakeholders and determine that the current committee name did not accurately describe how current committee members identified themselves in the profession.

2025 marks the conclusion of this study. A report is being finalized to document the outcome of this study.

Mentorship Toolkit

The Community Focus Group is finalizing a multi-year effort on how to create and facilitate a mentorship program. This in-depth document will highlight best practices, examples of various programs across the country and practical steps to take to facilitate a successful program.

YAF By the Numbers

The Strategic Vision Focus Group initiated an internal study on YAF's committee members to better understand its own demographic and representation. The study captures multiple data points such as ethnicity, role/position, years of experience, practice areas, lifestyle, personal challenges, and how each indvidual defines themselves as architects.

Intentional Inclusivity

Representation and Engagement

With over 50 current Young Architect Representatives, individual opportunities for expression are important and essential to year-long engagement. YAF has been intentional in utilizing its limited times together to celebrate and recognize every leader.

• Reflection circle at Annual Meeting to provide every member a moment to reflect in a safe setting

• Individual "virtual name cards" presented at Annual Meeting, with personal theme songs

• Freedom of expression with "penguin" theme throughout the year

• Freedom to select focus groups based on passion and interests

• Recognition for celebratory occasions, such as marriage, parenthood, awards, promotions, etc.

• Presentations from 3-5 YAR's at each full committee meeting and at the Annual Meeting

• Opportunities for YAR's to lead interactive polls

• Intentional selections for juries and liaison positions

• Added outside representation for Special Projects

Through these actions, it is YAF's hope that engagement of each YAR and committee member is maintained throughout the year.

Mugs and Stickers

To recognize and memorialize each member on the committee, YAF created one-of-a-kind printed mugs as a symbol of our work as a collective team.

Stickers were also created. #GSD is noted, representing the priority areas of Growth and Career Evolution, Steering the Future of the Profession and Driving Wellness.
