Summertime Traffic & Reminders

Summertime is right around the corner, which means many of our children and grandchildren are out and about, playing sometimes near the street, without attention to the potential danger vehicles pose. Their safety often depends on the skill and reaction time of the driver. Children are not the only potential hazards for driving on Wexford. Additional dangers include golf carts, bicyclists, joggers, walkers, pets, construction traffic and some very tight roadways. All drivers should use extra caution and drive within the posted speed limits in Wexford. Remember, Security has stepped up the enforcement of our traffic regulations, to include speeding and failing to stop at the stop signs. Remember, the leisure paths along the Wexford roadways are

for pedestrian and bicycle use only. Bicycles must yield to those walking on a pathway, and should take extra caution while riding on a roadway. As a reminder, parking is not allowed on any roadway, and any special event, delivery, tree removal, or other needs to park along a roadway must be preapproved by Security, who will ensure safe travel and proper access for emergency vehicles. Any approved parking on a roadway will be limited to that area only.

Spring has sprung!

The call of the sea is beginning to make itself heard, and for me it’s been yelling since early January. The fish are jumping, the breeze is brisk, and the water temperature is starting to rise slowly. Sunshine is a common occurrence, and we are now shedding jackets, sweaters, and fleece for… dare I say? SHORTS. Neither of which our northern cousins are remotely close to considering. Boating is once again paramount in our minds, so before you venture out, make sure to inspect your equipment on board. Take those Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) out and give them a wash, make sure they are in good condition and if you find one damaged or torn, replace it. Your life may depend on a PFD one day. Dig out your first aid kit, replenish Band-Aids and burn cream, and make sure you have emergency sun block on board for those that think they can tan but really do not.

Yacht Club Happenings

DockTails: Tuesday, April 6 and Tuesday, May 4 Radio Controlled Model Yacht Club: (Mondays) Weekly, year-round Kid’s Fishing Club: (Wednesdays) Weekly, year-round Educational Seminars: Wednesday, April 21 — Collision Regulations Wednesday, May 19 — Guide to Local Waters Beaufort Lunch Trip: April 14 HHI Circumnavigation: May 16 Your Harbour and Yacht Club Committee is excited to introduce the Wexford Boater Ambassador Program as a means of highlighting and promoting our beautiful harbour and local waterways, and enhance the new member onboarding process, two issues identified in our recent Annual Survey that could be improved. We are reaching out to all Wexford boat owners to solicit your interest in being part of a Boating Ambassador pool of volunteers to host new and prospective members aboard your vessel for a quick tour through the harbour, a short ride up to Shelter Cove or perhaps a cocktail cruise down to Harbour Town and back. The idea is that we introduce new members and even those who may be interested in Wexford to meet our “boat-minded” residents and show off our extraordinary facilities and harbour. If you have interest in volunteering as a Wexford Boating Ambassador, please notify Mark Dryden.

The Return of DockTails!

The FIRST DockTails of 2021 (and since 2019) is this Tuesday, April 6 at the Harbour Center Terrace. What is Docktails? This is a fantastic and fun community event for all Wexford Yacht Club Members (that means you) to kick-off the new year of Yacht Club festivities. Bring your drink of choice and an appetizer to share and join in the camaraderie of our waterfront lifestyle! Commodore Peter Carlson will give a brief introduction to this year’s Yacht Club calendar to let everyone know the excellent yachting events planned for this year. Please join us. It’s cocktails, on the docks — it’s DOCKTAILS!

Check the engine oil and the coolant and have a look at the hull. Does it need antifoul or just a good clean? It’s time to get either done. Maybe give those topsides a polish and clean out all those lockers. Remove the empties left over from all those sunset cruises and replenish for the ones ahead. Say “hi” to your fellow boaters, they are part of your tribe and always have helpful suggestions or experience you can draw on. Maybe they have already been out and noticed a new shoal, or can you add to the local knowledge bank we all draw from? Do a little study, read a magazine, see what is new for your boat or even look for your next boat, maybe buy your first. The internet is a wonderful resource. One of my favorites is watching the boater “fails”, purely for instructional reasons of course. Remember when and how to contact the lock. Call us on VHF channel 14 when you can see it; this means we can see you and thus it is much easier to control the flow of traffic through the lock. So what are you waiting for? Get out on the water, and let it soothe your mind. Float your cares away, reduce stress levels and who knows, maybe soon we will be able to have friends back on board to help make those experiences into memories. I shall raise a tot of rum to wish you all “Fair Winds and (gently) Following Seas.” Mark
