Meet the Grants Committee
ast year saw outstanding contributions by Wexford members and a record total of $258,000 was raised by the Wexford Foundation. It was the task of the Grants Committee, under the leadership of Co-Chairs Cyndi Duvall and Mark Brown, to identify candidate agencies, determine those that would be invited to apply for funding and to consider the needs of each one individually. The hard-working members of the 2020 Grants Committee, in addition to Cindy and Mark, were Terry Baehr, Bonnie Burnette, Sharon Church, Liz Fass, Nicki Gilboy, David Hay, and Teresa Kelly. Recognizing the substantial needs of local charities during an incredibly difficult year, the Grants Committee selected over 40 non-profit agencies for consideration. Committee members were then assigned to each charity to review their management processes, operating procedures, financial management and their program needs during the coming year. This process, which entailed personal or virtual meetings, resulted in 36 charities submitting detailed applications for funding for specific programs or projects. Final grant applications were then reviewed and rated by the Grants Committee before submitting their recommendations to the Foundation Trustees for approval in December. The grants process, which entails a significant amount of work by the Grants Committee, aims to ensure that all Wexford donations are used effectively. A follow up process provides additional monitoring and confirmation to ensure that members’ funds are used responsibly.

Normally, the major part of the Grants Committee work is complete by the end of the year, but not this time. In past years, the Foundation has hosted a luncheon each February to present grant awards, but with the pandemic this was not possible. So, over the past few weeks, Grant Committee members have joined with Wexford donors in visiting and meeting with grant recipients and personally handing out award checks. This has given a number of our donors the opportunity to see first-hand the impact which the Wexford Foundation and our generous members have on the local community.
