INTRODUCING
NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE
North East Lincolnshire might only be 193 sq km in area, with a population of approximately 157,000, but we have a lot going on.
Did you know, between Grimsby and Immingham, we are home to the largest port complex in the UK? Shipping remains incredibly important economically, complemented by the renewable industries.
With easy access to the southern North Sea, Grimsby is also home to the long-term operations and maintenance for many of the windfarms based there. We have seen significant, long-term investment in both our place and our people from renewables giants, like Orsted and RWE.
Complementing the port industry is the hive of food processing industries and cold storage warehousing available within a 10 minute drive of our ports.
Large scale decarbonisation is a strong and growing focus for our big industries,
including the thriving petrochemical sector, along the Humber bank, with predictions that thousands of workers will be needed in the decade ahead.
Our unique position in the country allows us the benefits of working both with the Humber businesses, and those across the Greater Lincolnshire area as well.
Meanwhile, work continues to regenerate the heart of our towns of Grimsby and Cleethorpes. At the heart of that journey is a bold ambition: using national and local investment to the tune of approx. £100m, we are shifting perceptions and creating towns that truly serve the community and that people want to live in.
We’re providing a new and vibrant offer for people to enjoy - why not be part of our story and join us in our exciting future?
Cllr Philip Jackson, Leader.
North East Lincolnshire Council.

Hello and welcome to the 2026 North East Lincolnshire County Guide!
NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE
CREATING A STRONGER ECONOMY
Welcome to the latest edition of the North East Lincolnshire County Guide which highlights business development, major investments and corporate success stories, as well as celebrating the economic growth of our region.
North East Lincolnshire is home to the busiest port complex; has the largest concentration of food companies; and has many opportunities in the expanding renewable energy sector. The region contains a wide selection of successful businesses within industry sectors such as ports, chemicals and renewables, as well as food, housing development and the visitor economy. In fact, Grimsby has one of Europe’s largest seafood processing clusters, supported by a vast supply chain in logistics, cold storage, and packaging.
The Port of Grimsby is one of the UK’s leading automotive ports and a major focal point for the offshore wind industry. It also handles a variety of other cargoes, while preserving strong links to the fishing and food industries. Together with ABP’s other Humber ports, Immingham, Hull, and Goole, it provides a supreme gateway for the trade connecting businesses across the UK, Europe, and further afield.
Grimsby is the entrance to the Energy Estuary and the South Humber Bank. Renewable energy is central to the economic growth of Northern Lincolnshire, and Grimsby’s proximity to several North Sea wind farms has led to considerable investments from operations and maintenance (O&M) providers, major manufacturers and component suppliers. The combined port complex of Grimsby and Immingham is a critical national asset, handling 11% of the UK’s total cargo!
It’s certainly exciting times ahead for the Humber region which is now undergoing an economic transformation - focusing on decarbonisation and embracing the green energy revolution to fortify its industrial base for new opportunities.
At the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to support businesses across the region, and our core objectives remain the same - to help strengthen the local economy by supporting our members in their business endeavours.
The Chamber now has 2,000 members and affiliates, representing all types of businesses in the Humber region, which includes North East Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire, Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
There are several areas in which we provide support for our members, as well as opportunities to voice your business concerns and priorities – we lobby for all our members. We also organise business networking events, exhibitions and business awards, as well as producing publications which are designed to raise the profile of our members’ companies together with their products and services. We also provide business start-up advice and risk finance through our Acorn Fund. Our support services are aimed at helping companies prosper, thereby creating jobs and helping to sustain the area’s economy.
Today, North East Lincolnshire is home to over 4,500 businesses, including major national and international companies such as Young’s, ABP, Siemens and Ørsted. With around 160,000 residents across North East Lincolnshire, there is a strong foundation to support the needs of local businesses; and local training organisations are working hard to accommodate the fast-changing skills needed and qualifications required by our industries.
The Chamber is “The Voice of Business” in the Humber and we’re immensely proud to support so many fantastic companies across Northern Lincolnshire and the wider Humber

MORE THAN £1.1 BILLION INVESTMENT
TO BOOST GROWTH, JOBS AND SKILLS IN UK’S COASTAL TOWNS AND CITIES
Funding will help businesses and academia develop real-life technology that reduces carbon emissions from shipping.
From: Department for Transport, The Rt Hon Heidi
• government announces £448 million at London International Shipping Week to slash emissions from shipping, cementing the UK as a clean energy superpower and breaking down barriers to opportunity in coastal communities, as part of the Plan for Change
• comes as £700 million of private investment unveiled, which will turbocharge growth, innovation and jobs across the country
• London International Shipping Week – a flagship event on the global maritime calendar – brings government and industry leaders together to power innovation, boost skills, create jobs and drive growth across the sector
Coastal communities across the UK are set to benefit from over £1.1 billion in joint government and industry investment for the maritime sector, which will unlock growth and jobs, including in the engineering, green technology and construction sectors.
Set to be announced on the first day (15 September 2025) of London International Shipping Week (LISW), the funding includes £700 million of private investment for major UK ports and leading industry players, as well as £448 million of public investment to reduce emissions from UK shipping.
The almost half a billion pounds will bolster the government’s UK SHORE programme, which supports the research and development of new clean maritime technologies and fuels, including electric, hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, wind power and more.
Previous projects have included electric chargepoints at UK ports for vessels developed by Aqua Superpower and smart technology developed by Waterwhelm which can produce hydrogen from recycled wastewater to generate electricity. UK SHORE funding has already delivered £240 million to over 200 projects across the country, some of which are now in active use and have supported 750 jobs so far.
Alexander MP and Keir Mather MP
This new funding will be allocated to projects in due course.
Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, said:
“Today’s £1.1 billion boost for the maritime industry will supercharge growth and jobs in our coastal towns and cities – making the UK one of the best places in the world to invest.
“We’re committing almost half a billion to cut carbon emissions from shipping – steering us towards net zero by 2050 and cementing Britain’s place as a clean energy superpower through our Plan for Change.”
As part of the UK SHORE programme, the government provides funding to businesses and academia, enabling them to take forward innovative, green projects and leverage further investment from the private sector to deliver real-life technology, which reduces carbon emissions from shipping.
Today, the newly appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Keir Mather, will visit Cammell Laird dry dock at Birkenhead in Liverpool to see how £3.6 million of previous UK SHORE funding has driven a further £3.6 million in private investment for the installation of a zeroemission electric shore power system.
This system allows vessels at the site to plug into an electric grid source and run emission-free while docked, similarly to how electric vehicles plug into chargers to restore their battery. Cammel Laird estimates that once fully operational, the system aims to save the equivalent of the average annual fuel consumption of 20,000 cars and support 15 jobs.
David McGinley, Group Chief Executive Officer at APCL Group, said:
“APCL Group is delighted to welcome the new Minister for Maritime. APCL Group is a critical supplier to the government,
and as such, the meeting provides an opportunity to showcase the current shipbuilding and ship repair projects at our Birkenhead facility.
“APCL is proud to continue our longstanding partnership with the MoD, the Royal Navy and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, with the Group supporting 100% of the RFA fleet. We will also showcase APCL Cammell Laird’s brand new state of the art shore to ship power technology, a £7 million project that has been partfunded by a £3.5 million grant from the Department for Transport’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4).”
Another success story includes Aqua Superpower, which, through almost £6 million UK SHORE funding, has successfully installed a network of chargepoints across the South Coast of England and London. The project estimates the network could reduce emissions by up to 2,800 tonnes of CO2 per year with 8 75 kW chargers in full operation. Following UK SHORE funding, Aqua Superpower have successfully expanded, building local charging networks spanning 59 sites across Europe and the United States.
This is alongside £3.3 million for FastRig wingsails, built in Scotland by Smart Green Shipping, which can reduce fuel and emissions on vessels by up to 40% a year.
Overall, previous maritime decarbonisation funding has delivered over £110 million in direct private investment and benefitted over 500 UK companies, including 250 SMEs. This enables the UK to continue charting a course to carbon free shipping by 2050, while supporting skilled green jobs, breaking down barriers to opportunity for workers across the country.
The government has also been working closely with industry to facilitate greater investment in UK ports, supporting jobs, skills and innovation and centring Britain as a global hub for international shipping. >>>
As part of this work, Peel Ports has today announced £300 million for its Liverpool, Hunterston and Great Yarmouth ports, while NatPower Marine has unveiled £250 million for shore side power, which is estimated to support over 2,000 skilled jobs in engineering, construction and green technology services across the UK, particularly within local port communities. Furthermore, the Port of Tyne’s £150 million North Side development site could potentially create up to 12,000 jobs in offshore wind and manufacturing.
To further propel prosperity for ports, the government will complete a revised national policy statement, covering England and Milford Haven in Wales, to help ports save time and money on planning applications to expand sites, opening up jobs and opportunities in coastal communities.
Proposals aim to streamline the planning process for ports in England and expedite planning applications by more clearly outlining the needs for port facilities and how to design applications to avoid process delays.
Claudio Veritiero, CEO, Peel Ports Group, said:
“Peel Ports Group has invested £1.5 billion over the past decade, future-proofing our operations, strengthening vital supply chains and creating hundreds of jobs across the regions where we operate.
“Looking ahead, we plan to invest a further £1 billion over the next 5 years, with projects already underway that include new portcentric warehousing, steel and metals facilities and major upgrades at key ports.
“These developments underline our long-term commitment to building capacity and efficiency across our network, while supporting growth and productivity in the wider UK economy.”
Matt Beeton, CEO at the Port of Tyne, said:
“Accelerating offshore wind, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing is a national priority and requires decisive
action. Boosted by Industrial Strategy Zone status, our 230-acre North-side expansion to the Tyne clean energy park will help the UK execute its 2030 clean power target.
“Located close to emerging North Sea wind arrays, this nationally strategic site offers deep-water access and a major development footprint to enable the creation of world-class infrastructure to support a growing supply chain offering.”
Stefano D.M. Sommadossi, CEO of NatPower Marine, said:
“We are investing over £250 million in the UK over the next 5 years to accelerate the rollout of shore power infrastructure – a game-changer for both the maritime industry and our coastal communities.”
“This investment is more than just ports and cables – it’s about people and prosperity. The overall programme is expected to create over 2,000 skilled jobs, particularly within local port communities. These are real jobs with long-term benefits, embedded in regions that need investment the most. We stand ready to work closely with government to accelerate this innovation in maritime energy transition even further.”
Outside of investment in ports and maritime infrastructure, the government also recognises the importance of the cruise industry to the UK economy, which contributes £5.8 billion and supports 60,000 jobs.
As such, the department is launching the UK cruise growth plan during LISW, which includes commitments from government and the cruise industry, to further support the sector by securing continued private investment for growth, benefitting the UK economy, UK ports and coastal communities.
LISW will run from 15 to 19 September 2025 and is one of the biggest maritime events in the world, bringing together industry leaders from around the globe to drive forward investment, planning and networking opportunities in global shipping.
To launch the week, Local Transport Minister, Simon Lightwood, will ring the bell at the London Stock Exchange. The Transport Secretary and Maritime Minister will attend several key events during the week where they will champion UK shipping on the international stage and showcase the UK as a global hub for growth, investment, skills and jobs.

SUPPORTING THE COMPANIES THAT BUILD BRITAIN
GRAYTON LEADS CRITICAL OUTAGE PROJECT AT BRITISH STEEL SCUNTHORPE.
A TRUSTED PARTNERSHIP FOR BRITISH STEEL
Grayton has long held an enviable reputation for complex project delivery. With over 30 years of experience in mechanical support across the Steel, Cement, Oil, Food, and Chemical industries, the company brings unrivalled expertise.
Backed by 100 highly skilled tradespeople, Grayton is trusted to maintain, refurbish, and replace critical plant and infrastructure equipment. The in-house design team, RJE Engineering, further strengthens this capability by delivering modern solutions for aging infrastructure.
Grayton’s longstanding relationship with British Steel, combined with its technical expertise in legacy plant, made it the natural
choice as Principal Contractor during a tenday outage at British Steel’s Scunthorpe site.
THE BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS
The project’s objective was to replace three expansion bellows on the Anchor Mixed Enhanced Gas (AMEG) system. The AMEG line extends for approximately 2.5 km and, at 108” in diameter, is wide enough to drive a car through. Within the pipeline are 56 expansion bellows, each critical for absorbing expansion and contraction caused by fluctuating operating temperatures. Shutting down the AMEG system meant halting gas supplies to key areas of the plant during the planned shutdown period—posing a significant risk to production if the project was not delivered on schedule.
Grayton was commissioned to design, fabricate, and install three new bellows.
Project Manager Jim Bradshaw explained:
“Grayton became involved 2–3 months before the planned AMEG outage. This early engagement gave us the necessary lead time to thoroughly plan the scope of works. Following receipt of drawings from British Steel, RJE Engineering suggested improvements, including fabrication aids that allowed the gas main to be held open and flange modification for the cut lines. These adjustments modernised the design and improved installation efficiency.”
During planning, Grayton conducted extensive site visits and engaged key contractors for specialist tasks such as cold water cutting, scaffolding, cranage, and surface treatments. Working closely with British Steel, the team aligned on safety and scheduling, enabling a detailed work plan and timeline to minimise disruption.
BUILT TO LAST: FABRICATION AND DELIVERY
The new bellows—4m in diameter and weighing 2.5 tonnes each— were fabricated and pressure tested at Grayton’s Barton-Upon-Humber workshops. Skilled welders, platers, fitters, and apprentices worked 24-hour shifts for five weeks, supported by third-party services for NDT testing, painting, coating, and haulage. Coordination ensured efficient delivery to meet tight installation deadlines.
Once on site, Jim and a team of 18 multidisciplinary tradespeople worked 24-hour shifts during the ten-day stoppage.
“As Principal Contractor, we carried the major responsibility— not just for the work itself, but for coordinating multiple specialist tasks,” Jim noted.
Confined-space work required stringent safety measures including continuous monitoring, breathing apparatus, and liaison with standby rescue teams. Communication was paramount: daily briefings and check-ins kept tasks in sequence, reduced clashes, and maintained smooth workflow. This transparency strengthened the partnership with British Steel, who remained fully informed throughout.
Despite meticulous planning, surprises arose. Jim explained:
“Dealing with aging infrastructure always brings challenges, but having a highly skilled team meant we could adapt and resolve issues quickly. Their technical skills and ability to respond under pressure were a true testament to teamwork.”
As a top-tier COMAH site, British Steel requires the highest safety protocols. A strict permitto-work system was enforced, with audits by both Grayton and British Steel. Every task was carried out under close supervision, ensuring compliance and the highest standards.
FLAWLESS EXECUTION
The project was completed safely, on time, and on budget—further proof of Grayton’s reliability and excellence.
Chris Cowling, Project Engineer for British Steel, praised the collaboration: “This was a major shutdown with a tight deadline, and Grayton delivered. Their professionalism, adaptability, and engineering expertise ensured not only that the outage was managed smoothly but also that the pipeline now benefits from a stronger, more resilient design.”
INVESTING IN PEOPLE AND PARTNERSHIPS
The project also showcased Grayton’s commitment to fostering talent. Seventeen apprentices are employed across the business, and several contributed to this project.
Third-year apprentice welder Dan Davy said:
“Working on such a large-scale project enabled me to further develop my
skills, especially in high precision welding and teamwork under tight deadlines. It was a great experience to see how my work contributed to such a critical part of the operation.”
Carl Meale, Managing Director for Grayton, reflected:
“I’m incredibly proud of the team. They showed what Grayton is all about— commitment, skill and the ability to deliver under pressure.”
He added:
“British Steel and Grayton’s longstanding partnership has been strengthened further by this success. The upgraded AMEG system will support the steelmaker’s reliability for years to come, while the project itself is a benchmark for how collaboration, preparation, and determination can overcome even the toughest engineering challenges.”
ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE FOR THE FUTURE
In an era when UK manufacturing faces constant pressure to modernise and compete globally, projects like this highlight the vital role of companies like Grayton in keeping industry thriving. With teamwork, ingenuity, and a relentless focus on safety and quality, Grayton continues to support the companies that build Britain.

FROM CLEARANCE TO LANDSCAPING
PREPARING SITES FOR MODERN CONSTRUCTION
In the UK construction industry, the success of any project begins long before the first foundations are laid.
Proper site clearance and preparation create the conditions for efficient, safe, and legally compliant development. From demolition of existing structures to tree felling and final landscaping, each stage requires specialist skills, machinery, and regulatory awareness. When handled professionally, these services ensure land is transformed into a safe and workable canvas for new development, while also meeting sustainability and planning requirements.
SITE CLEARANCE: MORE THAN JUST CLEARING DEBRIS
Site clearance is the essential first step of development. It goes beyond the removal of rubble and waste to include overgrown vegetation, contaminated soil, and redundant infrastructure. Clearing sites thoroughly reduces hazards and ensures compliance with UK regulations such as the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011. Failure to manage this stage properly can cause costly project delays and legal complications.
Modern clearance relies heavily on advanced machinery, from tracked mulchers and flails to crushers and shredders. These tools allow even difficult terrain to be prepared efficiently. More importantly, the process must be carefully managed by trained operatives who can balance speed with safety, protecting both the workforce and the surrounding environment.
DEMOLITION: PRECISION AND COMPLIANCE
Demolition is often viewed as straightforward destruction, but in reality, it is a tightly regulated process requiring meticulous planning. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) outlines strict protocols under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM) to minimise risk to workers and the public.
Each demolition project must be riskassessed, with hazardous materials such as asbestos identified and removed by licensed specialists before structural dismantling begins. Controlled demolition not only ensures compliance with the law but also maximises material recovery. According to Wrap UK, around 95% of demolition materials can now be recycled, helping the sector meet sustainability targets.
TREE FELLING: BALANCING DEVELOPMENT AND ECOLOGY
Tree felling is another critical component of site preparation, particularly when projects affect woodland or rural landscapes. UK law requires careful consideration of Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) and protected species regulations under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Unauthorised removal can result in severe penalties.
Qualified contractors carry out felling and vegetation management with an emphasis on biodiversity. Where possible, trees are recycled into timber or woodchip, while selective clearance preserves the ecological integrity of the site. This balance between development and environmental responsibility is increasingly important in planning applications and public perception of construction projects. >>>
Whether youʼre a utility or construction company, land agent, farming estate, shooting syndicate or land/property developer Abeko is able to offer you a total site clearance package.
Abeko undertakes site clearance projects throughout the UK, including works on SSSI sites, major commercial construction projects, clearance of vegetation beneath HV power lines and highways/motorway embankments.
In conjunction with a team of highly skilled staff, Abeko operates a modern fleet of arboriculture equipment including multi terrain tracked mulchers, excavator flails, whole tree chippers, forestry harvesters and forwarders.

LANDSCAPING: FROM PREPARATION TO PRESENTATION
Once clearance and demolition are complete, landscaping bridges the gap between preparation and the finished environment. It is not only about aesthetic value but also about long-term land stability and ecological planning. Sustainable landscaping techniques include soil improvement, erosion control, and the reintroduction of native species.
In commercial developments, landscaping also plays a crucial role in creating attractive spaces that enhance property value and support wider regeneration goals. From regrading terrain to planting schemes, these works leave a lasting impression that extends far beyond the construction phase.
INTEGRATING SERVICES FOR SEAMLESS DEVELOPMENT
The integration of site clearance, demolition, tree felling, and landscaping underpins the smooth progress of modern construction. When these services are coordinated effectively, projects benefit from fewer delays, better compliance, and reduced costs.
Access to skilled professionals and specialised equipment ensures that each stage, from the removal of existing structures to the creation of new landscapes, is executed to the highest standards.
As the demand for sustainable development increases, the emphasis on responsible site preparation has never been greater. Businesses that invest in professional expertise at this stage safeguard their projects against regulatory setbacks, protect the environment, and ultimately deliver stronger outcomes for clients and communities alike.

EXPERIENCED BRIDGE RESTORATION COMPANY APPOINTED TO LEAD CORPORATION BRIDGE WORKS
Activity has re-started on Corporation Road Bridge, as an experienced bridge restoration company is appointed.
UK company, Taziker, brings vast bridge restoration experience and has been brought in by North East Lincolnshire Council to progress the project.
With more than 50 years’ experience, the British firm based in Chorley, have successfully completed repair and restoration work across the country – from a National Trust Grade B listed bridge in Scotland to the Grade I listed Royal Albert Bridge in Cornwall, which is more than 150 years old.
One of its most famous contracts was a major conservation project on the iconic 1779 Iron Bridge in Shropshire – the world’s first iron bridge.
The company arrives on site just weeks on from the announcement by Historic England that the project had been awarded a grant of £495,000 to support the restoration of Corporation Road Bridge.
Cllr Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for highways and transport,
said: “The involvement of a firm with such a proven history of working with complex and historic structures, is good news.
“The recent grant from Historic England is also a huge vote of confidence in our determination to get this project over the line, and that is what we will do,” he added.
When is a Director not a Director?
In the corporate world, titles are often used liberally. Calling someone a “director” might seem like a harmless way of recognising seniority or impressing clients. But in law, that label carries far more than prestige. Even without a formal board appointment, individuals may find themselves treated as directors, and exposed to the full weight of directors’ duties and liabilities.
DE FACTO AND SHADOW DIRECTORS
Two types of “non-directors” are recognised by law. A de facto director is someone who acts like one by making decisions, signing off deals, or representing themselves as part of the board, without official appointment. A shadow director, by contrast, avoids the spotlight but influences the company by having their directions habitually followed by those who are formally appointed.
Both roles carry the same obligations as a statutory director under the Companies Act 2006, and as such they can also be caught by the Insolvency Act 1986 and the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986. Put simply, they can find themselves shoulders all the responsibilities of a director and exposure to claims, but without the authority, without the authority, protection that comes with formal appointment, or even the awareness that you have crossed that line.
RISK
Once you are deemed to be a director (be that de facto or shadow) the law expects you to meet fiduciary duties. That includes acting in the company’s best interests, declaring conflicts of interest, and not exploiting corporate opportunities for personal gain. Breaching those duties is not theoretical. Individuals can be sued, ordered to repay losses, and forced to hand back any personal profits.
Civil liability is only part of the picture. Proceedings may damage reputations beyond repair, with regulators, insolvency practitioners, and the press taking an interest. And unlike formally appointed directors, de facto and shadow directors are generally not protected by Directors and Officers (D&O) insurance. Insurers often decline cover where the
individual has no formal status, leaving them exposed to potentially ruinous legal costs and damages awards when things go array.
INSOLVENCY
The risks become most acute when a company enters financial difficulty. Insolvency practitioners will quickly look past paperwork and examine who was truly making decisions. If a de facto or shadow director was involved, they may be held personally liable for wrongful trading (eg, continuing to take on debts when insolvency was inevitable), or even fraudulent trading, which can bring criminal sanctions.
Financial consequences can be severe. Courts have the power to order personal contributions to a company’s creditors, often running into six figures. Beyond that, individuals can be disqualified from acting as a director of any UK company for up to 15 years. News of disqualification is public and permanent, leaving a digital trail that can follow someone’s career indefinitely.
HOW TITLES CAN BACKFIRE
One of the most common pitfalls arises from job titles. In many organisations, the title “director” is given as a badge of honour without any formal link to the board. Think “Sales Director” or “Operations Director” which come with seniority and managerial duties, but not necessarily directorial ones. However, courts will look at appearances, not just role descriptions, and if someone is held out publicly as a director, through contracts, websites, or email signatures, the law may conclude that they were indeed acting as one.
That can create real-world consequences. An individual may bind a company to contractual commitments they were never authorised to make. If the company collapses, they may
be dragged into insolvency proceedings, even if they thought the title was merely cosmetic. Employment law complications also arise. Individuals may argue their role was misrepresented, or that they were burdened with director-level responsibilities without proper recognition or reward.
PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS AND PEOPLE
So what can businesses do? The safest course is to align titles with reality. If someone is performing the role of a director, formalise their appointment and provide training on their legal duties. If not, avoid handing out director-level titles casually, however tempting it may be for morale or marketing.
Companies should regularly review job titles and responsibilities, and ensure managers understand the risks of informal leadership roles. Where responsibilities blur, as they often do in startups and family businesses, taking legal advice can help clarify boundaries before a problem arises.
The law is clear on this. It is not just what you call yourself that matters, but also what you do. Many people drift into de facto or shadow directorships without realising it, particularly in fast-moving or founder-led companies. Yet ignorance is no defence. The consequences of crossing that invisible line can be catastrophic, from personal financial liability to careerending disqualification.
For businesses and individuals alike, clarity is the best protection. Titles should reflect reality, responsibilities should be defined, and everyone involved should understand the weight that comes with being, or acting as a director.

LEVERAGING LEGAL EXPERTISE:
The Business Imperative of Legal Services in Selling Your Business
The decision to sell a business is a momentous one, fraught with complexities and legal intricacies that can significantly impact the outcome of the transaction.
As an entrepreneur, your life’s work is embodied in your business, making the sale process a critical juncture that demands meticulous planning, negotiation, and execution. In this high-stakes endeavour, enlisting the expertise of legal services is not merely advisable; it is a business imperative that can pave the way for a successful and seamless transition.
Navigating the Legal Landscape
Selling a business involves navigating a labyrinthine legal landscape, replete with contractual obligations, regulatory compliance, tax implications, intellectual property concerns, and potential liabilities. Without a comprehensive understanding of these legal nuances, entrepreneurs risk exposing themselves to unforeseen legal and financial challenges that could cast a shadow over what should be a triumphant culmination of their efforts.
Legal professionals with expertise in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) bring invaluable insights to the table. They can help you assess the true value of your business, structure the deal to maximise financial benefits, and identify potential legal pitfalls that could undermine the
transaction. From confidentiality agreements to due diligence, from negotiating purchase agreements to drafting non-compete clauses, legal experts safeguard your interests throughout the sale process.
Mitigating Risk and Ensuring Compliance
The sale of a business involves a myriad of regulatory obligations, ranging from industryspecific regulations to labour and employment laws. Failing to address these legal obligations could result in costly fines, legal disputes, and reputational damage. Legal services play a pivotal role in ensuring that your business is compliant with all applicable laws and regulations, mitigating the risk of post-sale liabilities that could haunt both you and the new owner.
Moreover, legal professionals can conduct thorough due diligence to uncover any hidden legal risks that might not be immediately apparent. This diligence helps you identify and address potential obstacles before they escalate into post-sale legal disputes, fostering a smoother transition and protecting the integrity of the deal.
Negotiating for Optimal Outcomes
Negotiating the terms of a business sale requires
finesse, acumen, and an unwavering focus on your best interests. Legal experts bring their negotiation prowess to the table, advocating for terms that align with your goals and priorities. They can craft purchase agreements that provide adequate protections, including warranties and indemnities that shield you from future claims arising from pre-sale activities.
Furthermore, legal professionals can anticipate potential areas of contention and negotiate fair resolutions that satisfy all parties involved. Whether it’s determining the allocation of assets, addressing intellectual property rights, or handling post-closure matters, legal services are an essential asset in ensuring that negotiations result in outcomes that are favourable and sustainable.
From mitigating risks and ensuring compliance to negotiating optimal terms, legal professionals bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. As you embark on the journey of selling your business, harnessing the power of legal expertise is a savvy business decision that safeguards your interests, maximizes value, and paves the way for a brighter future beyond the sale.
WHY INTRUDER ALARMS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE BUSINESSES
In a region built on industry, logistics and the Humber ports, security is more than just a box to tick — it is central to business continuity. From warehouses and factories to offices and retail, local enterprises face daily risks of theft, vandalism and arson. At the heart of protecting people and property in 2025 is one essential tool: the intruder alarm.
FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE
Modern intruder alarms go far beyond the simple systems many businesses once relied on. They now combine multisensor detection, smart motion analytics and real-time communication with Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs). When a break-in attempt occurs, response times are critical — and monitored alarms can mean the difference between a minor scare and major losses.
For companies in North East Lincolnshire handling high-value stock or machinery, certification is vital. Accreditation from the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) assures that systems are professionally designed, installed and maintained. Choosing certified systems also strengthens insurance compliance and reassures stakeholders that standards are being met.
WORKING TOGETHER:
N Force Security Solutions Ltd
CCTV AND FIRE PROTECTION
While intruder alarms form the backbone of security, they are most effective when integrated with other systems. CCTV surveillance provides visibility across port perimeters, storage yards and industrial estates. British Standards such as BS 8418 set benchmarks for detector-activated monitoring, ensuring cameras do more than simply record — they deter and trigger a response.
Fire safety cannot be overlooked either. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 place strict duties on building owners and managers. Intelligent fire alarm panels and addressable detectors now allow faster response, and when linked with
intruder and CCTV systems, create a unified layer of protection.
A Local Perspective
In Grimsby and Immingham, where cold storage facilities and logistics hubs play a vital role in national supply chains, downtime caused by a security breach or fire can be catastrophic. For example, a food distribution centre integrating its intruder and fire alarms with CCTV avoided a major incident when an out-of-hours alarm signalled both motion and smoke in a storage zone. Remote monitoring confirmed the threat, emergency services were alerted within minutes, and the business returned to operation without longterm disruption.
LOOKING FORWARD
As technology evolves, intruder alarms are becoming smarter — using AI to detect unusual behaviour, IoT sensors to report faults before they fail, and integrations that give managers complete oversight. For North East Lincolnshire’s businesses, investing in advanced, accredited intruder alarms is not just about deterring crime. It is about ensuring resilience, protecting livelihoods and keeping vital industries moving.

SECOND RUNWAY AT GATWICK WILL DRIVE GROWTH, SAYS LOGISTICS UK
Logistics UK supports transport secretary Heidi Alexander’s decision to approve plans for a second runway at Gatwick Airport. Senior Policy Manager Alexandra Herdman explains why it will help drive growth across the economy:
“Gatwick is currently the busiest single runway airport in Europe and modifying the existing standby runway to develop a fully operational second runway, is a practical and efficient way to increase capacity.
“Almost two thirds of the UK’s air cargo moves in passenger aircrafts, sitting underneath seats in the bellyhold, and can make the difference between a profitable and a nonprofitable route for a passenger airline. This type of freight also tends to be high-value, time-sensitive goods such as manufacturing components and pharmaceuticals so is essential to keep the UK trading and supply chains moving.
“By increasing passenger services, it is highly likely this will also provide increased air cargo, with some reports suggesting air cargo tonnage could double, helping address the significant shortage of air cargo capacity in the south east and boosting the economy by making international connections for UK businesses even easier.
“It is also important to recognise that innovation in
aviation is moving at pace. Airspace modernisation, aircraft design and sustainable aviation fuel mean the sector is moving towards cleaner and quieter skies while driving economic growth across the whole economy.”
Logistics UK is one of the UK’s biggest business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With decarbonisation, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. Logistics UK supports, shapes and stands up for safe and efficient logistics, and is the only business group which represents the whole industry, with members from the road, rail, water and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers whose businesses depend on the efficient movement of goods.

NEW FREIGHT AND BORDERS MINISTER
HAS OPPORTUNITY TO DRIVE GROWTH, SAYS LOGISTICS UK
The announcement that Keir Mather MP has been appointed Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation with responsibility for freight and borders is welcomed by business group Logistics UK. Acting Chief Executive Kevin Green is now urging the new Minister to seize the opportunity to drive growth through an ambitious freight and logistics plan:
“Appointing Keir Mather MP as Minister with specific responsibility for freight and borders shows the government recognises the strategic importance of the logistics sector and is listening to industry’s call for ministerial representation.
“The productivity of the economy and prosperity of the logistics sector are completely intertwined so it is now crucial that the Minister works with departments across Whitehall to implement an ambitious plan for freight and logistics.
“Logistics UK has been calling for crossdepartmental, dedicated logistics and
supply chain minister for some time. If this government is serious about changing the country’s economic fortunes, our members believe it is imperative that the new Minister prioritises policies that will drive growth across the whole economy by delivering what our sector, and country as a whole, needs on infrastructure, decarbonisation, trade and skills.”

RWE’S SOFIA
IS THE UK’S FIRST OFFSHORE WIND FARM TO USE RECYCLABLE ROTOR BLADES
• Half of Sofia’s 100 offshore wind turbines are being fitted with the pioneering blade technology.
• These rotor blades are made using a resin which can be broken down into its component parts and recycled into new products, once the turbine’s operational life ends.
• The high-tech process has been devised by Siemens Gamesa, which also manufactures the recyclable blades for Sofia at its facility in Hull, UK.
RWE and turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa are driving a new era of wind turbine innovation with the first ever largescale installation of recyclable blades at a UK offshore wind farm.
Highly unique, the rotor blades are made using an innovative resin. At the end of the blade’s operating life, the various materials can then be easily separated from the other components as a result and can be recycled, for example into vehicle components and consumer goods like bicycle helmets and suitcases.
Following an agreement signed in 2023 with Siemens Gamesa, RWE’s Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, located off the north-east coast, is now being fitted with a total of 150 recyclable blades, used across 50 of its 100 wind turbines. Already 50% of the recyclable blades have been fitted at the wind farm, with Siemens Gamesa continuing installation throughout the rest of the year.
Thomas Michel, COO, RWE Offshore Wind said: “This installation represents an important momentfor RWE and Sofia. Deploying recyclable blades at this scale is an indicator of RWE’s drive to deliver sustainability across its renewables fleet. By working with partners like Siemens Gamesa, we are setting a new sustainability benchmark for renewables development and helping significantly improve the circularity of offshore wind technology.”
Darren Davidson, Vice President of Siemens Energy UK&I and Siemens Gamesa UK said: “Seeing the first recyclable blades being installed in UK waters is a major landmark moment. This is a great example of how we can share knowledge and work together to deliver on both energy security and a net zero future. Our Hull factory is at the cutting edge of blade technology development & manufacturing. As a global leader in energy technology, we’re proud to be partnering with RWE on Sofia, one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world.”
The deployment of the recyclable blades at such scale builds on RWE’s successful world-first installation of the Siemens Gamesa recyclable blades at the company’s Kaskasi Offshore Wind Farm, in Germany. It also highlights RWE’s commitment to identifying and using sustainable solutions that support a low-carbon, circular economy.
Offshore construction at Sofia is progressing well and is being undertaken by Siemens Gamesa using the specialist vessel Wind Peak, which is operated by Cadeler out of the Port of Hull.
Over 40 years of scaffolding experience
At 1.4 gigawatts (GW) maximum installed capacity, Sofia is one of RWE’s largest offshore wind farms currently in construction and is located on Dogger Bank in the central North Sea, 195 kilometres (km) off the North East coast. The project is being fitted with the very latest Siemens Gamesa SG 14222 turbines with 108-metre-long turbine blades and a 222-metre rotor diameter. Once fully constructed and aiming for a target operational date of 2026, Sofia will be capable of generating enough renewable electricity, to power approximately 1.2 million typical UK homes once fully operational. Like many coastal locations, attracting talent from the bigger cities can be challenging for organisations in North East Lincolnshire.
North East Lincolnshire Council was approached by other large employers in the area to create a place-based recruitment campaign to share with prospective job candidates from out of area.
The idea behind the postcard-inspired campaign is that employers work together to shout about the many benefits of living and working in this incredible place.
See the results at www.nelincs.gov.uk/ FindYourSpace.
Highlights include:
• Great value house prices (a typical detached house costs four times less than in London)
• Excellent schools (87 per cent are graded outstanding or good by Ofsted)
• Stunning location (we’re sandwiched between an internationally important natural coastline and the Lincolnshire Wolds)
• World-leading renewables sector (the largest offshore windfarms on the planet are maintained from Grimsby)
• The area’s unique character, seafaring heritage, growing cultural scene and enormous sense of community.
NELC has launched a web page and a striking range of digital postcards to share with place colleagues across other sectors, so we can all shout about what it feels like to live and work here.

IMMINGHAM AND HABROUGH
SET FOR SHARE OF £5BN FUNDING BOOST TO ENSURE
LOCAL AREAS THRIVE
The Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Philip Jackson, has welcomed news of a funding boost of up to £20 million over the next decade for Immingham and Habrough, saying it will support the authority’s ambition to build a stronger economy and stronger communities.
The Government has announced that 264 neighbourhoods will receive a share of £5 billion which will be invested across the UK to give ‘local people the power to transform their hometowns’ as part of its new ‘Pride in Place Programme’.
In addition to the £20 million for Immingham and Habrough, with £2 million every year for 10 years, North East Lincolnshire Council has been given a further £1.5 million immediately to upgrade public spaces with new green spaces, play areas and sports and leisure facilities.
Cllr Philip Jackson, said: “This is great news and we warmly welcome this funding as we look to deliver our ambition across North East Lincolnshire of building a stronger economy and stronger communities with the help of those who live and work in it.”
“As we say in our Council Plan, we cannot effect positive change alone but working with our partners we can move forward to improve lives for children, adults and families.
“Our ambition in this respect reflects the aims set out in this new Pride of Place Programme and we look forward to working together with others in the coming months to look at the very best investment for this extra funding in Immingham and Habrough,” he added.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Infrastructure and Transport and Immingham resident of over 50 years, said: “I could not be happier to welcome this funding into Immingham and Habrough.
“We have already seen what great work is happening in regenerating Grimsby and Cleethorpes so this funding will only add to what is without a doubt a positive future for our borough and its residents.”
Andy Hopkins, Chief Officer & Town Clerk at Immingham Town Council, said: “This is fantastic news for our Town. The Town Council is currently finalising the Immingham Town Plan and has been consulting with residents as well as partners to highlight areas of concern, and what developments could be made to improve our Town.
“We hope that these themes will inform where funds are spent, and we look forward to working with North East Lincolnshire Council to develop plans.”
WHY HOSPITALITY MATTERS IN BUSINESS
In business, the most valuable conversations rarely happen in boardrooms. They are sparked over coffee, shaped at lunch, or sealed after an evening reception. Corporate hospitality is about more than food or accommodation; it is about creating the right setting for ideas to flow and relationships to grow. In North East Lincolnshire, where energy, logistics, and engineering overlap, these moments are shaping the region’s future.
From Breakfast to Evening Connections
Breakfast meetings remain a staple. An early start creates a focused atmosphere before the daily rush begins. For local firms, the breakfast table offers space for introductions, updates, and strategy briefings. A fresh pot of coffee and the right people often achieve more than a long agenda.
If breakfast sets the stage, lunch drives conversations deeper. Working lunches allow negotiations and trust to develop in a relaxed but productive setting. Many partnerships in the region began not in offices but across a simple meal that encouraged dialogue.
Evening receptions and networking events add another dimension. In a region where ports, offshore energy, and manufacturing intersect, these gatherings are vital for collaboration and visibility. For hosts, they also provide a platform to showcase brand and commitment to the region.
HOSPITALITY IN PRACTICE
Corporate hospitality also serves a practical role for business travellers. Offshore and
industrial teams value flexible check-ins, reliable WiFi, and meals outside traditional hours. When combined with meeting spaces and strong transport links, these facilities turn necessity into opportunity. One engineering firm hosting offshore teams noted feedback as much about hospitality as business outcomes.
For hosts, clarity of purpose is crucial. Whether securing contracts, strengthening client ties, or building trust with investors, the venue must match the goal. Food and drink should reflect local quality, while the overall experience should leave lasting impressions.
LOOKING AHEAD IN 2025
Rising food, energy, and labour costs mean venues must show value. Regulations around tax, safety, and licensing add complexity. Hybrid capability, reliable digital connections, and sustainable practices are now expected, not optional. Businesses want to see responsible sourcing, reduced waste, and lower carbon footprints.
Keeping events local supports jobs, strengthens supply chains, and signals regional confidence. From the first coffee to the last conversation, corporate hospitality remains central to how North East Lincolnshire does business.

REGIONAL CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS
SET OUT PRIORITIES FOR BUSINESS
Running a business has always meant adapting to change, yet the past few years have highlighted just how quickly circumstances can shift. The key to success lies in focusing on the things you can influence, rather than things you can’t control.
Paul Tofton, Partner at Forrester Boyd considers some of the more critical factors that businesses should be aware of.
One of the most important areas is cash flow. Keeping a close eye on income and expenditure allows you to spot potential problems early and make informed decisions. Even profitable businesses can face challenges if cash flow is not managed carefully, so regular forecasting is essential.
Equally, investment in people should remain a priority. Staff retention and development not only build loyalty but also strengthen your ability to respond when opportunities arise. A well-trained, engaged team can often be the difference between simply coping and moving forward with confidence.
Many businesses are also reassessing how they use technology. Cloud-based systems, automation, digital tools and AI can save both time and money, freeing you up to focus on growth. Reviewing your processes once a year and asking “is there a smarter way to do this?” can uncover efficiencies you may not have considered.
Proposed legislative changes such as adjustments to the retirement age may also influence workforce planning and pensions. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax will affect how many sole traders and landlords report earnings whilst Companies House is introducing director identification verification to increase transparency. These developments show
how important it is for businesses to stay informed and plan ahead.
Finally, don’t underestimate the value of professional advice. Whether tax planning, funding options, or succession planning, speaking to experienced advisers can help you spot risks and opportunities well in advance. Regular reviews with your accountant or adviser keeps your business on the front foot.

HERITAGE & PROGRESS
GREAT GRIMSBY AND CLEETHORPES
Famous landmarks and rich history characterise Grimsby. A Danish fisherman called Grim made these shores his home in the 9th Century AD, beginning centuries of prosperity and growth.
Grimsby stood on a natural harbour called the Haven, sheltering ships from the Humber and the tempers of the North Sea. During the 12th century it developed into a major trading port. Ships brought timber from Norway and wine from Spain and France. Wool was exported and coal was brought along the coast from Newcastle. At one point, it ranked 12th in importance to the Crown in terms of tax revenue.
The gradual silting of the Haven presented many challenges and eventually brought about serious decline to the port.
Pioneering engineering allowed for the creation of Grimsby’s first dock with the opening of the Haven Dock in 1801. Major developments in marine civil engineering continued to be advanced, culminating in HRH Prince Albert laying the foundation stone of Grimsby’s new dock in 1849. Built for the Royal Navy’s largest ships, the new Royal Dock was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1854.
Grimsby’s landmark Dock Tower, its design inspired by Palazzo Publico in Siena Italy, stands between the entrance locks of the Royal Dock and powered the world’s first hydraulically
Discovering the history of North East Lincolnshire helps us to understand how the area has progressed and developed over the years and how it has come to be the way it is today. Its current successes give reassurance for future accomplishments in time to come.
operated lock gates. Built in 1851, it held 30,000 gallons of water to provide power to the lock gates and cranes on the docks. Advances in hydraulic technology soon made the tower redundant, but it remains as a monument to the entrepreneurial spirit of past Grimbarians.
Cleethorpes was originally made up of three small communities, Itterby, Oole and Thrunscoe. Cleethorpes was a small fishing village until the 1920s when it began to entice visitors to the sea bathing and the theoretical health benefits of the medicinal waters, transforming into a key holiday resort when the railway arrived in the area in the 1940s.
The population of Cleethorpes in 1831 was under 500 residents, this figure has risen dramatically, and it now plays host to around 30,000 people.
Purpose built attractions such as Ross Castle and Cleethorpes Pier were funded by Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company as tourist attractions which are still popular today. The promenade and town continues to be an attraction with its vibrant seaside lifestyle.
IMMINGHAM
Immingham is a major business location with the UK’s largest port and a unique history.
Well known for the industrial sites around the port, the town is a busy logistics hub, a centre for the process industries and a growing focal point for renewable energy companies.
The international significance of Immingham can be traced back more than 400 years. It was the last departure point for the Pilgrim Separatists who fled England for Holland in 1608. These families then sailed on the Mayflower to America in search of a new life.
With thousands of tonnes being imported and exported throughout Immingham each day the town has a special place in the success of global industries ranging from automation through to energy.
The Great Central Railway Company decided to open a neighbouring dock to Grimsby in 1912 as the deep water channel to the river made it accessible for many types of vessels.
The new docks meant that there needed to be an easy link between the towns, therefore the opening of the dock by King George V, known then as the Kings Dock, went alongside the arrival of the electric railway running to Grimsby from Immingham. This train line encouraged workers to move into the area and this led to the further development of the community.
During WW1, the area was used as a submarine base and the war caused Immingham to suffer economically but it began to pick up again when the docks were developed in the 1950s.
The dock is now over 100 years old and the port, owned by ABP, is the largest in the UK in terms of tonnage, handling around 46 million tonnes of cargo every year.

PLACES TO VISIT IN NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE
Home to golden, sandy beaches, an array of outdoor activities including walking, cycling and water pursuits, North East Lincolnshire has a fascinating yet often hidden heritage to discover. Exciting events and festivals, delicious food and drink and welcoming hospitality businesses await your visit.
EXPLORE OUR SANDY SHORES
Experience the Cleethorpes coast your way. Head to quieter areas at Humberston Fitties beach bustling with nature and wildlife or a head to the beach near the Pier for traditional seaside fun with sandcastles, paddling in the tide and 99s along the Prom.
Our resort is set to get better and better thanks to the awarding of an £18.4m LUF grant from Central Government. On the menu is:
• The development of the former ‘Waves’ site on Sea Road – a key area along the sea front;
• A new-look Pier Gardens with a focus upon attractive open space and diversity;
• A transformed Market Square to provide a place for people to gather and enjoy events and entertainment.
This will further enhance the significant improvements already made in Cleethorpes, which has included heritage works.
Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the wonderful balconies and buildings along Alexandra Road are being restored to their former Victorian glory as part of this scheme.
Grimsby’s Fishing Heritage Centre, set in the 1950s, gives you the chance to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the life of British trawlermen doing the job described as the most dangerous peacetime occupation in the UK.
Tour the historic Ross Tiger trawler to
experience the conditions aboard one of our earliest surviving diesel side-trawlers.
The story of Immingham’s past can be found in a visit to Immingham Museum. The history of the town from a small village to its growth into a town due to the building of Immingham Dock and the introduction of the major railway can be found alongside an exhibition of Immingham’s part in the story of the Mayflower Pilgrims.
The heritage trail takes you around the town, giving an account of the Pilgrim families who fled England for a new life, initially in Holland, from the shores of Immingham in 1608 before eventually boarding the Mayflower ship in 1620.
EXPLORE UNIQUE EXPERIENCES
Tour a traditional dockside smokehouse and see how Grimsby Traditional Smoked Haddock is produced in 100-year old processes. Join an artisan brewery tour and enjoy a selection of beers in the taproom afterwards.
Delve into chocolate making and creating artisan chocolates. All of these experiences and more are available to discover in North East Lincolnshire.
GET READY TO BE ENTERTAINED!
From family festivals with street entertainers and child-friendly activities and comedy and theatre performances to history and heritage events and live music gigs, concerts and tours, there’s something for all tastes. These are held right across the area including the Meridian Showground in Cleethorpes to smaller, intimate venues such as Docks Academy.
BRING YOUR BINOCULARS!
When you visit, you’ll realise that the Humber Estuary is a hive of activity, whatever time of the year. From wild birds to commercial shipping, there’s a lot to see so bring your binoculars to spot birds, boats and more in this unique and diverse habitat.
