The Caxton Theatre Brochure Jan-June 2026

THE CAXTON PLAYERS

Dear Patrons

Welcome to The Caxton Theatre 2026 season. Artistic director Suart Stretton has been busy pulling all the directors together for another brilliant season. First though let’s have a look back at the second half of 2025.

Pygmalion graced the stage in July, the directional debut of Michael Mayne so a big well done to him and his wonderful cast. Then came Strangers on a Train, a thriller brought to you by John Ferguson with an interesting twist. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time was our October offering. This took the West End by storm. It provided quite a challenge for director Steve Labourne but he met it full on and produced a superb show quite different for Caxtons. Finally, the family favourite Goodnight Mr. Tom, presented in what we like to call our Christmas slot. A very popular production which allowed some of our youth theatre to take to the stage.

The 2026 season begins in January with the gentle comedy Good Things which takes place in a charity shop of all places. Warm yourselves up on those cold winter nights with a good giggle at the theatre. Following on is Home, a story about two odd couples who struggle with whatever life throws at them. Abigail’s Party next, always a popular choice for our theatre. Then finally in June a home-grown story from local writers: Tommy’s Long Weekend, the tale of real-life local Grimsby character Tommy Taylor in the 1930s. More details of these productions can be found in this Brochure.

The biggest event that occurred within the theatre during 2025 was the installation of a completely new lighting system for our stage. We have ditched old tungsten lights for new modern LED lighting. Although very expensive to install it will save us money in the long term and give you a better theatre experience. It also falls in line with our sustainability plans.

The youth theatre goes from strength to strength with waiting lists for both Junior and Senior sections. It is worth noting that the Saturday morning session has been split into two with Juniors meeting from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. and the Seniors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This allows Heather our Youth leader to dedicate more time to each group.

We genuinely hope there is something to cater for all tastes throughout the 2026 season and look forward to welcoming you all into our delightful little theatre. If you feel you want to volunteer and become a member of this wonderful Caxton family the membership application form is within this brochure. You can also contact us at membership@caxtontheatre.com. If you don’t want to join but want to know more about our Caxton family, come along to our regular Thursday social nights where you can meet current members for an informal chat, maybe listen to the Director of the next play to be cast describing their play and the cast that are needed for the production. (Or join our mailing list – mailing.caxtontheatre@gmail.com).

It is always a warm and friendly gathering in the Studio Bar where you are guaranteed a warm welcome and the Bar is always open. Look out for dates in this brochure and around the Theatre.

Many thanks for your continued support

STRANGERS ON A TRAIN

A psychological thriller where people test the limits of their morality

This production was a real treat, particularly for those who are fans of the psychological thriller genre Updated from the 1950s to the present day, the narrative explored the eternal struggles of good versus evil, and how easy it is to find oneself on the wrong side. It left audiences considering just how far we will go to protect ourselves, and those we love. Well done to Director John Ferguson and all the cast and crew.

A MAIN HOUSE PRODUCTION

24 – 31 JANUARY 2026

This funny, gentle comedy is set in a charity shop.

Susan, a volunteer is facing the ‘Big 5-0’. She has to cope with a father entering his second childhood, an adolescent daughter and an ex who still has the power to wound. ‘Good Things’ is a perceptive and

humorous look at people in middle age trying to find love for the 1st, 2nd or 3rd time around, whilst retaining their sanity and dignity. Great characters make this a superbly entertaining watch and take you on a journey that spans 6th January, 14th February and Christmas Eve of the same year. See what happens when people eaves-drop on private conversations and jump to entirely the wrong conclusions.

7 – 14 MARCH 2026

HOME

Harry and Jack, two charming, nattily dressed gents, meet in what at first seems to be a municipal park. They reminisce about the war, the weather and exchange views on work. Both are decidedly eccentric.

If you’ve ever sat next to an empty seat in a park or public library, the chances are that you’ll have attracted the company of someone like Harry or Jack - strange but harmless. Or are they? Is this really a park?

With the arrival of the raucous Kathleen and prim and proper Marjorie, the plot thickens. Kathleen’s feet

may be tortured by her hospital-issue shoes but there’s nothing wrong with her libido, much to Marjorie’s disgust. How much of everything these four say is true? Home is a black comedy, exploring the thin line between sanity and insanity.

A MAIN HOUSE PRODUCTION

25 APRIL – 2 MAY 2026

ABIGAIL’S PARTY

This well-known and popular play is a suburban situation comedy of manners, and satire on the aspirations and tastes of the ‘new’ middle class that emerged in Britain in the 1970’s.

Set in – the London side of - Essex (theoretically Romford) Beverley Moss invites her new neighbours, Angela and Tony, over for drinks. They moved into the road just two weeks ago. She has also invited her neighbour Sue, a divorcee, whose fifteen-year-old daughter Abigail is also holding a party back at their home. Beverley’s husband Laurence is typically late home from work and the ‘gathering’ starts off in stiff fashion as the virtual strangers tentatively get to know each other. As the ‘hostess with the mostest’ Beverley endeavours to keep the drinks flowing. The alcohol takes effect on the evening. Sniping, flirting, naivety and too much stress is a cocktail for comedy disaster as the play concludes.

A MAIN HOUSE PRODUCTION

6 - 13 JUNE 2026

For their latest play, journalists John (Tommy’s grandson) and Victoria Taylor have trawled family and local history archives to shine a light on the difficult inter-war years – known as The Long Weekend - in a Grimsby surviving the Great Depression with humour, beer, fish... and football.

Tommy’s Long Weekend is a funny, affectionate and nostalgic story, based on the life of the legendary local publican, one of Grimsby’s toughest. The play begins with scenes from his harrowing and insubordinate time in the army; it ends with Grimsby’s still legendary FA cup semi-final against Wolves in 1939. We meet Tommy’s wife Nell, his son Jack, Mr Grange of Grange Wintringham, pub regulars Norm, Frank & Bob and Fifi, lady of the night, amongst others.

This is another first for the Caxton Theatre, a world premiere, a local play about local people which will be fascinating & fun for cast and audience alike. We thank

John & Victoria for choosing the Caxton Theatre for the premiere of this very local play.

ABOUT THE THEATRE

On February 2nd 1943, The Grimsby Evening Telegraph carried an advertisement for a play performed by the Caxton Players. On the front page was a photograph of a scene from ‘Children to Bless You’.

This was the first public appearance by the ‘Caxton Players’ as a society. The real beginnings though go further back. Late in 1940, at a time when local dramatic societies and operatic groups had closed down because of the war, three members of the Grimsby Evening Telegraph staff decided to put on a play, to counteract the depression of the times. John Knowles, the advertising manager, two of his staff, Mary Pinion and Sheila Robinson, all with some dramatic experience, and four other newspaper workers became the Telegraph Amateur Dramatic Society. In February 1943, it was decided by the committee that a new society should be formed, because there were so few members of the Evening Telegraph now left. The name ‘Caxton’ was suggested because of the connection with printing.

The society has continued to thrive since its humble beginnings and is the only society in North East Lincolnshire with its own theatre. Our auditorium seats 174 people and we produce eight main-house productions per year. These productions last for seven performances –Saturday to Saturday (excluding Sunday), and are produced every six to seven weeks.

A taster of the play normally takes place 14-16 weeks before opening night, where anyone can come along and have a drink and hear the Director’s take on the play about to be cast. Audition pieces are available on the night to take away to prepare for the auditions, which take place a few nights later.

Auditions take place in front of a casting panel of three directors, one of which will be the director of the play concerned. Rehearsal periods last about 12-13 weeks before opening night. The number of rehearsals you will be required to attend depends on the size of the part you have. The director will draw up a rehearsal schedule at the beginning so you will know when you are required. As we always have at least two plays in production at any one time, the first period of rehearsals take place in our rehearsal rooms (Burnetts) next door to the theatre in Strand Street. Then immediately after the preceding play finishes rehearsals move to the actual stage until opening night.

We also put on smaller productions, normally for two or three nights, in the bar area –the Studio Bar. Rehearsals for these productions vary, depending on the director and cast involved. The taster and auditions for these productions are usually run as for a main stage production. We hope the above information gives you a taste of our society.

OPEN NIGHTS AND AUDITIONS

Anyone is welcome to come along to our regular open nights and to audition to be in any Caxton Main House or Studio Bar Play – in fact this is how most of our members arrive!

We hold an open night, usually on a Thursday, before every play about to be cast. The format varies according to the Director. Generally, the taster for the play and the characters will last for approximately up to 30 minutes after which there is the opportunity to socialise. You can also decide if you fancy having a go. If the answer is yes, then you should come to the audition night, usually the following Tuesday.

Alternatively, come to an open night purely as a social event, to meet new people. The bar will be open and you can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome.

Auditions are held before a panel of three directors, who will select the best mix of people to form the cast. You will not have to act in front of everyone else, nor learn the audition piece by heart.

We choose a variety of plays each season so there are roles to suit all talents and ages. Experienced actors and complete novices are welcomed every year; our directors are always looking for new talent to nurture and develop.

A Caxton play takes about 12 weeks from first rehearsal to opening night. Rehearsals are usually three nights a week, at the discretion of the director, but minor players rehearse significantly less. Everyone is part of the team and preparing a play is seen as a social event and a chance for fun and friendship.

Details of open nights and auditions can be found on our website www.caxtontheatre.com, Facebook (thecaxtontheatre) and on page 32 of this brochure.
