Cheralyn praised for staggering weight loss!

LOSING more than 8st saw a Somerset woman reach the semi-finals of a national competition to honour inspiring weightloss stories.

Cheralyn Davey, from Bridgwater, was among 42 women who secured a place at the semi-finals of Slimming World’s Woman of the Year 2025 contest, at the firm’s Derbyshire head office.

The recognition came after the 51-year-old lost a staggering 8st 5.5lbs, having peaked at 16st 12.5lbs. And she celebrated her incredible achievement with former England rugby international James Haskell, who described her as a “role model”.

“Before I joined Slimming World, I felt stuck,” Cheralyn said. “My weight was affecting me on the inside and out – it impacted my health and the way I felt about myself. My confidence was low and I was self-conscious about my size, but I didn’t know how to change things.

“It was my health and mobility declining, as well as wanting to be a more active mum, that jolted me into doing something about it.

“Finding Slimming World was a turning point. I didn’t realise then that it would be the best decision I’d ever make.”

She said the support of her fellow slimmers in Bridgwater helped along the way.

“The support, ideas and encouragement from everyone each week helped me believe I could do this,” she said.

“Going to the group each week was a reset for me, and they’ve been there for me every step of the way. Each week we’d talk about any challenges we had coming up or share new recipes we’d tried, and I learned so much.”

And her efforts led to a more active lifestyle, Cheralyn said, taking part in the Slimming World activity support programme.

“As I lost weight and felt more confident, I decided to give it a go,” she said.

“I started by going on a short walk as I was on two crutches and struggling to get about and

now walk and run without them – I even ran Race for Life earlier this year. I find it really helps me mentally and emotionally too.”

Former England rugby star James was full of admiration for Cheralyn’s journey.

“Cheralyn has done something truly inspiring. She’s taken control of her health, built her confidence and developed life-long healthy habits,” he said.

“It shows that with the right support and mindset, you can achieve the things you set out to. She’s become stronger –physically and mentally – and for that she’s a real role model.”

Sharon Lewis-Turner runs the Somerset group Cheralyn attends and spoke of her pride at

her efforts.

“Cheralyn is a star and watching her journey has been a privilege. She’s not just lost weight, she’s grown in confidence and self-belief,” she said.

“She’s a huge support to others in group and a brilliant example of what can be achieved. Losing weight isn’t easy, we know that, and support plays a huge role in people’s motivation and success.”

n The Slimming World group meets on Tuesdays at 7.30am and 9am at Morganians Rugby Club, and on Fridays and Saturdays at Victoria Park Community Centre, at 7.30am and 9am.

Drug dealer has assets seized

TAUNTON man Dawid Dankiewicz – convicted last year of drug dealing in the county town – has had more than £120,000 worth of cash and assets seized.

In November last year, the 34-year-old was jailed for 26 months after pleading guilty to 13 counts of being concerned in the supply of class C drugs and one count of possessing a class A drug.

A confiscation order for his cash and assets was granted earlier this month to the value of £120,285.79 under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

It means cash belonging to Dankiewicz, pictured, and other items including a car, could be seized from him to make sure that he is unable to profit from his criminality.

Taunton Neighbourhood Policing Sgt Daryl Screech said: “Dawid Dankiewicz was jailed last autumn for several drug offences after a warrant was carried out.

“Work through our Financial Investigation Unit was able to prove he had profited significantly from his criminality.

“We believe it is really important not to just be robust in putting drug dealers in prison, but making sure we follow that up with confiscation orders to ensure they cannot on release benefit from their previous illegal activities.”

Eye clinic provides life-changing care to homeless in Taunton

HOMELESS

people have received 'lifechanging' eye care after a special initiative in Taunton.

A free clinic for people experiencing homelessness was held in the county town to mark World Homeless Day - with Specsavers teaming up with Taunton Open Door.

People experiencing homelessness were able to take a free eye test with staff from the East Street branch, with some offered free glasses during the eventincluding one man who couldn't see any letters on an eye chart.

Holly Wainwright, retail director at Specsavers Taunton, said: "It went really well. We had a great rapport with everyone who came in.

"I’m incredibly proud of the team, who helped make this possible. It is our long-term aim to ensure that everyone can access free, appropriate eye and hearing care which ultimately will help improve quality of life.

"It was a really successful day and very humbling to be part of it. Our team have been blown away by the experience.

"As a local team within the Taunton community, we are committed to making healthcare accessible to everyone, so I really hope that this clinic helps to raise awareness of the issue and the current barriers people are facing.

"One gentleman couldn’t see any letters on the chart, and now we’re providing free glasses for him, which will be lifechanging. Another gentleman was going for a job interview, so having glasses, which we all take for granted, will potentially give him an essential lifeline.

"It was all very humbling, so

we feel strongly about doing it again before Christmas. The stories we heard particularly struck a chord, showing today has really changed lives, and we very much hope to offer this clinic every eight weeks or so."

Kirsty Betty, client support advisor for Taunton Open Door, added: "It was great to have staff from the Taunton Specsavers store join us to join us in the lead-up to World Homeless Day.

"We’re very grateful to them for giving patients the time they needed, reaching more people experiencing homelessness, and we are delighted that the Specsavers Taunton team are planning further volunteering with us.

"In addition to the essential eye-health benefits, clinics like this help to increase people’s self-esteem and give them a positive sense of belonging to our community."

Barriers installed to stop unauthorised camps

BARRIERS aimed to prevent unauthorised encampments have been installed at a Taunton parkand-ride site.

Work to install two height barriers has been completed at the Silk Mills Park and Ride Car Park, in Taunton, after the site was repeatedly home to unauthorised groups in recent years.

Now, vehicles over two metres in height will be unable to access the site.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, lead member for transport and waste services at Somerset Council, said: “These barriers are a practical step to improve security; help prevent

unauthorised encampments and ensure the site remains safe and free from disruption.”

Earlier this year, a teenager was handed a detention order after setting fire to seven minibuses at the Silk Mills site.

Shock as abbey announces Monday closures

GLASTONBURY

ABBEY is to close on Mondays for more than three months due to “the current economic climate and everrising costs”, it has been announced.

Trustees at the attraction, in the town centre, said they had made “the difficult decision” to shut the abbey on Mondays from November 3 to February 16, 2026, inclusive.

They assured visitors the move is temporary and the abbey would re-open on Mondays from February next year.

“This will be disappointing to some but this short-term decision has been taken within the context of the long-term future of the abbey including, for example, the conservation and maintenance of the buildings and grounds which is a legal requirement of the charity and is estimated to require £750,000 in the next five years,” a spokesperson said.

David Odgers, chair of

trustees, added: “Like many other heritage sites Glastonbury Abbey is facing challenging times with the impact of increases in costs and employer national insurance and visitors generally spending less.

“As a result, we have made the difficult decision to close the site on Mondays to visitors and

members for a limited period from November 3 till February 16.

“We appreciate that this will be disappointing to visitors and Members whose support for the abbey is so much appreciated.

“We regret the inconvenience caused but trust you will understand that the temporary

restriction on opening hours will give the management team some space to identify how we can work to reinvigorate the offering to visitors, to seek efficiencies and generally to be more effective in all we do.”

The abbey will remain open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10am and 4pm.

Appeal to trace witness after assault in Bridgwater

POLICE are trying to trace this person –who may have witnessed a raciallyaggravated assault in Bridgwater.

The victim, a man in his early 20s, was walking to work when it was reported he was attacked and racially abused by two other men at around 8.35pm on Eastover on Friday, September 12.

He suffered facial injuries during the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment, but has since been discharged.

Two men, aged 20 and 28, were arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm and racially aggravated public order later the same day.

They have both since been released on conditional bail and must not enter the Eastover area.

Officers are now appealing to the man in the image to contact them as they believe he may have witnessed the incident.

PC Hannah Bird, officer in the case, said: “This is a horrible incident which has caused great distress to the victim, who we

are supporting, but the incident is now under investigation, and we have lines of enquiry to follow.

“We are considering this a hate crime, and there is no such place for hate.

“We know there were several people in the area at the time of the assault and would specifically like to ask the man in the image, or anybody who knows him, or

who may have witnessed the incident themselves, to contact us.”

Police

House-to-house and CCTV enquiries have been carried out and any other people who witnessed the incident, or who may have doorbell or dashcam footage from around the time of the incident, should contact police on 101, quoting reference 5225257989.

Safer schools schemes made permanent

ASCHEME aimed at making school streets safer has been made permanent after an 18-month trial.

The Frome Safer School Streets initiative, led by Frome Town Council (FTC) with funding from Active Travel England and in partnership with Somerset Council and active travel charity Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans), has been installed permanently.

Somerset Council, the highways authority, made the decision after a review of data collected during the trial, and the results of FTC’s town-wide perception survey.

It means a Traffic Regulation Order governing timed road closures, 20mph limits and traffic-calming measures around Oakfield, Trinity and Critchill schools, and on Park Road near Avanti Park School, is now permanent.

CCTV footage of the Park Road zone showed an average 36% reduction in traffic volume at drop-off and pick-up times,

for those over 65, with a very homely atmosphere and plenty of personal attention.

which was only possible because of School Streets.

"Analysis of narrative feedback across both surveys, plus traffic monitoring data that demonstrates a reduction in traffic speed and volume, justify the retention of the scheme. There’s still a repeat of the road safety audit to come from Somerset, but we’re glad to have reached this important milestone."

Cllr Carla Collenette said: "The conversation doesn’t end here: we know that some areas of the scheme are more successful than others and that some challenges remain.

while traffic survey data in October 2022 and October 2024 revealed a drop in average speed along part of the new 20mph zones in Somerset Road and Oakfield Road.

The data from the town council’s surveys also shows majority approval for the continuation of the scheme.

Cllr Anita Collier said: "We’re pleased to see the traffic order for Safer School Streets made permanent, and to hear from a majority of survey respondents about the positive impact the scheme has had for them.

"In particular, the high approval rating from parents and schools is an endorsement of the project, from the people who stand to benefit most from safer travel to and from school.

"We’re also delighted to see the positive impact of the new zebra crossing on The Butts,

"We are still listening and keen to work with the community and our partners at Somerset Council to ensure the investment in Safer School Streets can keep delivering in the longer term."

And Cllr Richard Wilkins, lead councillor for transport and waste services at Somerset Council, added: "Making Safer School Streets permanent is a clear statement of our commitment to safer, healthier journeys for children and families.

"This is about creating streets where walking and cycling feels natural and safe, and where the school run doesn’t come with unnecessary risk.

"We’re proud to work with partners and the community to deliver a scheme that improves safety, supports active travel, and helps shape a more sustainable future for Frome."

Last orders for Bridgwater nightclub amid staffing issues

BRIDGWATER nightclub

Bliss has closed – due to staffing problems.

The nightspot, in the High Street, has been put up for sale by owners World Famous Dive Bars Ltd (WFDB), who said they hope it will “thrive under new ownership”.

Bliss Bridgwater opened in February 2024 and the owners said it had “operated profitably during its lifetime”.

However, they said the doors were closing at the 850-capacity venue for “purely operational” reasons.

“Despite being a profitable business, the company has been unable to secure a sufficiently large pool of skilled staff locally

to maintain the high standard of service and safety the venue’s management and guest base expect,” a statement said.

“This is notwithstanding the fact that the business has offered compensation ahead of the local market rate.

“As a result, the directors have concluded that continuing trading under the current conditions is not viable over the long term.

“In light of this, the owners are now actively exploring the sale of the business and are open to approaches from interested parties."

The Halloween weekend served as the final trading days under the current ownership,

they said, and served as "an appropriate time for any transferral or successor tenant discussions".

WFDB Ltd director, Marc Griffiths, added: “We opened Bliss Bridgwater with the aim of delivering a first class nightlife experience for Bridgwater and the surrounding area.

“I’d like to thank every member of the team for their hard work and every guest who has chosen to spend a night with us.

“The decision to close has not been easy, but it is simply the right one given our operational constraints. We are now looking ahead with a sense

A358 crash sees car end on its side

A CAR ended up on its side after a crash near Taunton.

The incident saw firefighters from the town sent to the scene, on the A358 near the Farmers Arms, at around 6.30pm on the evening of Sunday, October 26.

“Fire Control received a call regarding a single vehicle road traffic collision with one person still within

the vehicle,” a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

“On arrival, crews confirmed one vehicle to be on its side off the roadway with one person inside.”

Firefighters used stabilisation equipment, scene lighting and lines, to get the person out of the vehicle safely, when they were handed in to the care of the ambulance service.

of optimism that the business might thrive under new ownership.”

He said the management extended their sincere thanks to “staff and guests alike”, adding “your support, energy and commitment have been vital to the club’s success over its period of trading”.

The news came after, on October 24, the night spot posted on social media that it was closed over the weekend due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

WFDB runs a number of venues in the south west, including Mother’s Ruin and The Greyhound, in Bristol.

Marine jailed over domestic abuse

ROYAL Marine Jayden

Deakin has been jailed for physically and psychologically abusing his former partner.

The 26-year-old, of Norton Fitzwarren, was sentenced to 26 months behind bars after being found guilty of controlling and coercive behaviour by a jury in August, who heard he abused her over a number of years.

He was sentenced at Taunton Crown Court on Thursday (October 30), with the judge describing him as a “coward” and a “bully” after the court heard he would belittle the victim and assault her, to the point she was worried he would kill her.

His offending was reported to police in November 2022 and he was arrested and later charged.

At Taunton Crown Court,

sitting at North Somerset Magistrates’ Court in August, he was found unanimously guilty of controlling and coercive behaviour by a jury. Deakin, pictured, was found not guilty of two counts of rape.

Ahead of his sentencing, the victim, herself a serving member of the Royal Navy, said she continues to be affected by his behaviour.

"Even though the relationship has now been over for almost three years, I still have to live with this trauma for the rest of my life and I’ve still got the scars on my hand and my arm that I have to look at every single day, they’re not going anywhere," a statement read to the court said. "I want him to understand that it’s not ok to behave in this way and to bully people. I want him to know that this behaviour is wrong and that

I’m doing all of this to hopefully prevent him putting anyone else through the same trauma that I’ve had to go through. The life I lived when I was with him was not a life worth living."

Sentencing Deakin, the judge said: "Your behaviour was of a coward; as a bully. This was persistent action over a prolonged period. This went on for years and got worse over the years."

As well as the 26-month prison sentence, the judge also put restraining orders in place to protect the victim and her mother from Deakin.

After the hearing, DC Eve Tomkinson, the investigating officer, said: "The victim in this case demonstrated extraordinary courage in speaking out.

A Royal Navy spokesperson added: "Unacceptable and

criminal behaviour has absolutely no place in our Armed Forces and we are committed to rooting out misconduct wherever we find it.

"We commend the bravery of the victim for reporting criminal behaviour which falls well below the high standards of the Royal Navy.

"Anyone who is found to have demonstrated behaviour which breaches our high standards can expect to face subsequent action, which for legal reasons remains a private matter."

Empty shop squat boarded up after eviction

AFORMER pizza store in Glastonbury that had become an unauthorised squat has been cleared after an eviction notice was served.

A High Court eviction order was obtained by the owners of the former Papa Johns, at 17 Market Place, following the unauthorised occupation of the building in recent weeks.

The premises has now been boarded up in a bid to prevent a repeat of the disruption after police moved people out on Wednesday (October 29).

MP Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton) said: “Avon and Somerset Police have done a sterling job, progressing the eviction order as quickly as possible – in close collaboration with the property owners – ensuring due process was followed and enforcing possession of the building.” It comes amid a campaign to tackle anti-social behaviour in Glastonbury.

In July, the MP hosted a meeting involving the police – including Police and Crime Commissioner Clare Moody –and residents to discuss options to tackle problems in the town.

The MP went on: “Over the past six months, I have been pressing the Government to address anti-social behaviour in Glastonbury, while also keeping a close eye on this specific case.

“Glastonbury residents must feel safe in their town centre, and I am committed to continuing to work with all stakeholders and services to

take a joined-up, multi-agency approach to tackling the root causes of anti-social behaviour – as well as ensuring police have the powers they need to enforce."

A police spokesperson added: “Anti-social behaviour (ASB) in Glastonbury town centre remains a priority for neighbourhood officers, who carry out targeted patrols in uniform to deter problems and identify those responsible. Officers continue work with a range of partners to tackle issues of drunkenness, disorder

and drug use.

“At the end of September a vacant business premises in Market Place started to be used as a squat, attracting ASB to that area. Bailiffs acting for the landlord boarded up the building on October 29, after the owner obtained a court order.

“Dealing with ASB involves a series of sanctions, starting with formal warnings and building up to court orders.

“Reports of incidents, with descriptions of those involved, may form part of the evidence we need both to seek such orders and to enforce any breaches.

“Breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order is an offence which can lead to arrest and a prison sentence.”

Meanwhile, police have warned they will be carrying out extra patrols ahead of Glastonbury Carnival, set to run on November 15.

Funding sought to repair Somerset route in danger of falling into the sea...

FUNDING is being sought to re-open a West Somerset road closed in 2023 amid fears it could fail.

In January 2023, Somerset Council closed the B3191 Cleeve Hill, near Watchet, after cliff movement was near the busy route was detected.

The closure, under a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO), was carried out after a geotechnical survey recommended it be kept closed to ensure public safety.

Later, a detailed report found it was safe for pedestrians and cyclists to use the route – which is between Blue Anchor and Watchet – but not heavier vehicles such as cars and the order was amended.

However, almost three years on, the authority has had to implement a permanent road closure order, which will come into effect from October 31.

Now, Councillor Richard Wilkins, the council’s lead member for transport and waste services, has written to Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport, to request funding to reinstate the road, and said: "We consulted our communities about the ongoing closure and they told us that it is having a major effect on the economy of

Watchet including the cost to the local economy and the inconvenience in terms of hours lost in delays, the logistics of coping with delivering goods to and from Minehead as well as the negative effects on tourism,” he wrote.

The permanent TRO was approved after a public consultation run earlier this year, with a number of objections received – including a 1,000-name petition.

Pedestrians and cyclists are still allowed to use the route, with additional safety measures planned.

The B3191 has fallen victim to regular slippage of the cliff, with sensors in place to alert

highways chiefs of movement.

Cliff protection work has been completed at Blue Anchor in order to ensure an alternative route remains available for traffic to access businesses and destinations along the road.

Cllr Wilkins added: “We understand the strength of feeling about the B3191, but at the same time, as the highways authority, we have a statutory duty to have the appropriate order in place.

“Therefore reluctantly, we have to introduce the permanent order for the safety of the public, as this is the appropriate legal mechanism. There is no way to reopen the road safely for motorised vehicles without

massive structural works which would require major funding.

“That is why I have written to the Secretary of State to ask for funding for this vital road to be replaced or re-routed, along with the coastal protection and stabilisation measures which would be necessary to avoid continued coastal erosion.

“I sincerely hope this can be the start of a constructive and fruitful dialogue given the urgency of the situation.

"The closure order can be reversed if funding becomes available, and we will continue to lobby hard for our local communities to ensure a solution can be found and funded.”

Bridgwater Hospital care centre plans revealed in application

PLANS to demolish part of the landmark former Bridgwater Hospital – as part of a scheme to create a health and care academy – have been submitted.

The historic site, at Salmon Parade, is grade II-listed but a planning application seeks to demolish later additions to the building as part of the redevelopment project.

When complete, it is hoped the Somerset Training Academy will provide courses at the new health and care academy for the NHS, local authorities, voluntary and private care providers.

Outlining the proposals, Avalon Planning & Heritage said the hospital site had lain empty since 2014, when the new Bridgwater Community Hospital was built.

“Over the last 10 years, it has been subject to substantial neglect, vandalism and water damage, which has impacted severely on the condition of the building, which includes the front listing wings facing on to Salmon Parade and the

projecting wings to the rear,” the plans said.

If approved, the plans would see all three of the rear wings of the building demolished, to be replaced with a new block to the rear, including a new foyer and central event space.

“The existing gatehouse adjacent to the entrance of the site from Salmon Parade will be retained and re-purposed to provide ecological mitigation for protected bat species that are evident on site," it added.

Two hospitalised after Hinkley bus crash

ABUS crashed into a tree near Taunton in the early hours of the morning – with two people taken to hospital.

The incident, in Monkton Heathfield Road, Monkton Heathfield, occurred at just after 4am on Thursday (October 30), with fire crews from the town and emergency services sent to the scene.

“Crews from Taunton attended an incident where a bus had crashed into a tree,” a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

“Three casualties were inside the bus requiring medical assistance, and were removed by fire crews and paramedics.

“Police also attended the scene. Crews made the vehicle safe and duty of care was left with recovery.”

Avon & Somerset Police said

two people had needed hospital treatment.

“We received a call just after 4am this morning reporting a collision in which a bus has

collided with a tree in Monkton Heathfield Road, in Monkton Heathfield near Taunton,” a spokesperson said.

“Two people were taken to

hospital with injuries which are not believed to be lifethreatening or life changing.”

The bus was operated by Somerset Passenger Solutions (SPS), which provides transport for workers at the Hinkley Point C site.

Managing director of the firm, Simon Cursio, said the incident was being investigated.

"We are aware one of our double deckers heading towards Hinkley Point C left the road at Monkton Heathfield," he said.

"Several passengers heading to work were on board, and one of them, alongside our driver, was taken to hospital."

Hundreds honour the fallen at cathedral service

MORE than 500 people came together to honour the fallen during the Somerset Festival of Remembrance - including a message from His Majesty The King.

The event, at Wells Cathedral on Saturday (November 1) included poignant audio recordings of five Somerset World War Two veterans (three of whom were there on the night), as well as music from the Central Band of the Royal British Legion and the Yeovilton Military Wives Choir, as well as a solemn Act of Remembrance, which featured a poppy drop from the cathedral ceiling.

Commodore Robert Mansergh OBE, Somerset County President of the Royal British Legion, which organised the event, said: "It was a truly emotional evening which was all

about showing the deep sense of gratitude we have for those who gave their lives for the freedoms we all enjoy today."

The festival was held to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mohammed Saddiq, attended as Guest of Honour, leading the county’s tribute and paying respect to the extraordinary courage and commitment of Somerset’s people in times of war and peace.

A personal message from His Majesty King Charles III was read at the start of the proceedings.

Commodore Mansergh added: "As we approach Remembrance Sunday, the Legion encourages everyone to buy and wear a poppy, a simple but powerful way to honour the past and help those who serve today."

Dog walking field plan in Somerset village

DOG walkers might soon have a space to rent to exercise their beloved pets if plans are approved.

RTPI, on behalf of Justin Trott, have submitted a planning application to Somerset Council to change the use of a plot of land in Lovington to a dog walking field.

The site, off Lovington Road, is next to the village primary school and would be rented out to dog owners, with parking

spaces provided.

“The proposal is to create a dog walking field,” the application said. “This is a fenced area which can be used to exercise nervous or reactive dogs.

“The field would be rented out to individuals to exercise one or more dogs. This allows owners or walkers to let their dogs off the lead or give them space for special training.”

A “simple stock fence” would be

installed on an open side of the field, the plans said.

“This proposal will provide a muchneeded facility in the area as these fields are much in demand,” the application concluded. “There are no adverse impacts associated with the scheme.”

Homes plan for pub at centre of community campaign

APLANNING application has been submitted to convert a former Somerset pub into a house – as the community battles to raise the funds to buy and re-open it.

The Wellington Pub Company Ltd – owners of The Britannia Inn, in Bath Road, Wells – has submitted plans to convert the property into a detached four-bedroom house, and build four further houses on the existing gardens, with access from what was the pub car park.

It comes after a long-running fundraising effort by the East Wells Community Benefit Society (EWCBS), formed in 2024, to raise money to buy the premises and re-open it as a community pub.

The Brit was listed as an ‘asset of community value’ by Wells City Council in January 2024 and the society has recently triggered a further

six-month moratorium, preventing its sale.

Submission of the planning application has now brought new impetus to the Save The Britannia effort, the group said.

“The Britannia is the only public house serving East Wells and the neighbouring villages, which have a total population of over 6,000, and the vision of the Community Benefit Society is to recreate a welcoming pub and hub at the heart of the local community, owned by and run for the benefit of residents,” a spokesperson added.

An initial Share Offer, enabling anyone over 18 to acquire a stake in the project, raised nearly a quarter of the £350,000 needed to buy and renovate the site.

A second share offer was recently launched, offering shareholdings from £50 to encourage as many people as possible to invest.

“All funds received will be ring-fenced and refunded in full should the purchase not go ahead,” the society added.

A series of fundraising events have been held, with a new song, written and recorded by committee member Mark O’Callaghan – Remember the Britannia Inn – is soon to be released.

“Anyone with relevant skills or ideas would also be welcome to join in the work of the society,” the spokesperson said.

As part of the planning application, submitted by Savills on behalf of the pub chain, a viability study claims the pub is “not a viable business

in both the short term and long term following refurbishment”. It added it was “evident that under a traditional pub format, the business is unviable and unable to compete with surrounding competition and the larger pub operators”.

However, the EWCBS said its own reports show the pub could “thrive once again under community ownership”.

TREET Festive Market is returning in December – promising a Christmas spirit, spectacle and stalls!

The event, hosted by Street Parish Council, promises “a joyful day of shopping, food, music, and festive cheer”, with a wide range of stalls showcasing businesses and artisans from around the village.

Stalls and entertainment will be on offer between 11am and 4pm on Saturday, December 6, in the High Street, Farm Road, and at Crispin Hall.

“From handcrafted gifts,

jewellery, and stocking-fillers to delicious seasonal treats and refreshments, there will be something for everyone to enjoy,” a spokesperson said.

“Community groups will also be in attendance to share advice and highlight the valuable services they provide across Street.

“Music, entertainment, and festive fun will fill the day, creating a warm and merry atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy.”

“This special market is a highlight of the village calendar and a wonderful way to celebrate our community spirit, support local traders, and enjoy a festive day out with family and friends,” the spokesperson

Iron Maiden legend set for Frome show with British Lion

IRON Maiden legend Steve Harris is heading to Frome in December with his band, British Lion.

The trad-rockers are set to play the Cheese and Grain on December 8, with support coming from Stray.

British Lion was Maiden founder and bass legend Harris’ first-ever side project, with the eponymous 10-song debut released in 2012, followed by The Burning in 2020.

British Lion is made up of vocalist Richard Taylor, guitarists David Hawkins and Grahame Leslie, Harris on bass and keyboards, with Simon Dawson on drums.

According to Harris, British Lion was some time in the making.

"It’s taken years for this to come together,” he says.

“Originally vocalist Richard Taylor and guitarist Grahame Leslie sent me a tape – that should show you how long ago this was," he said.

"I was just impressed and decided to help them a bit and it went from there. I thought the songs were so strong it’d be a crime if it they didn’t see the light of day."

n Tickets for the British Lion show at the Cheese and Grain on December 8 are

available now, costing £33.50 in advance plus standard service charge, via https:// www.cheeseandgrain.com/events/britishlion.

Exhibition to celebrate Norman's 90th!

THE 90th birthday of a Yeovil photographer is being celebrated with a number of special events at his church.

Norman Browne, who has been a keen snapper since childhood, will have a selection of his pictures displayed at St John’s Church to honour his landmark day.

Entitled Tread Softly in This Precious Paradise, the display celebrates “a lifetime devoted to capturing the beauty and fragility of the natural world” and will run from November 22 to 29.

“Norman’s love of photography began in childhood, inspired by his father, who won an award for

his photography the year Norman was born,” a spokesperson said.

“His father taught him the craft and Norman spent decades working exclusively with film cameras.”

The exhibition features a collection of landscapes from the USA, Canada, and France, right through to the beautiful coastlines of the West Country.

Among the prints featured is a striking image of Ben Nevis, taken in 1950 and developed more than 50 years ago in Norman’s own darkroom.

Meanwhile, the St John’s Model Railway Group will be appearing at the launch on Saturday, November 22, with their detailed model of Yeovil

'Pause should be Saxonvale reality check'

ANOTHER story about Saxonvale in Frome.

One can't help but wonder whether this wonderful community scheme everyone is backing - which included a lido at one point I remember - has actually, finally, been smacked up sharp by harsh reality.

Much as we all like to loathe housing developers, could it be that they actually know how to do things - and fund them?

It's all very well wanting to create a utopia in Frome, we'd all like that, but instead we've got a years-long saga that has ended, again, in the site still sitting there doing nothing.

One can only hope the latest halt on any progress will provide the necessary wake-up call for those proposing the perfect development that actually, it's not quite as easy as they would like to think.

Are we perhaps better off compromising in a bid to at least achieve some of their hoped-for goals and see something happen, than we are waiting and waiting for funding that is unlikely to ever appear, while looking at pretty pictures of green spaces and swimming pools?

BEING a Yorkshire man living in Chew for a while back in the early 80s, I remember watching Chew Magna FC playing at the local school with my at-the-time girlfriend, who lived in Chew.

While watching a game, the goalkeeper unfortunately got injured and my girlfriend said, 'you played about in goals when training at your club back home, go and help them out, go on, hurry, hurry'. I do so, oops, a tad embarrassing!

The game was a draw, 1-1, and I let one goal in. At least we didn’t lose.

My girlfriend's brother played for Chew at the time and he did ask if I wanted to play further matches.

Having played semi-pro, I duly sad yes of course. If I remember correctly the Peacock pub was the local gathering/ office, George was the manager, and very apt Temple Cloud away was my first full game.

I scored after 10 minutes, I think we won 2 or 3-1. I went on to score four more goals after Temple.

I played maybe eight games towards the back end of season 1982. Dundry away was my last game, a 0-0 draw, the pitch was an up-and-down slope.

Great times and memories, lovely people and hey, the beer was good too, a bit strong

FACTS OF THE WEEK...

OCTOBER 21 is Apple Day in the UK (which we should really know here in Somerset), when people are encouraged to celebrate the national fruit. Yes, we have a national fruit.

So, to belatedly mark the occasion, here are a few facts about the humble apple...

Although we in the UK have a special affiliation with the apple, around the world it is also extremely popular.

Apple trees make up half the world's

deciduous trees (plants that shed fruit or leaves when they reach maturity) used for fruit production.

However, the UK does not feature among those growing the most, which are China, the United States, Poland, Italy, and Turkey.

The age-old tradition of apple bobbing, where someone dips their face into a barrel of water containing the fruit, is made easy by the fact an apple is 25% air, making

The answer surely lied in asking...

them ideal for the game.

And finally, one for the UK to brag about - apple pie is not, in fact, an American invention.

It's a myth that it was invented in the US - namely Delaware - as it was taken across the Atlantic by European settlers. It is believed to have first been invented in England around the 14th century.

So, apple pie is not, in fact, as American as apple pie, if you see what I mean...

Street firm spearheading clean innovation

ASTREET-based company is part of a unique venture to help pharmaceutical and life sciences firms speed up their research and manufacturing processes.

Total Clean Air (TCA), based at Gravenchon Way, has partnered with Gloucester company Vanguard Healthcare Solutions to create Modular Clean Air (MCA) - designing and building cleanrooms.

Cleanrooms, essential in industries requiring contamination control, and can take time to build and install.

However, the new venture aims to provide fully compliant, off-site manufactured cleanrooms, and make them available in a fraction of the time of traditional builds.

Globally, the cleanroom technology market is projected to more than triple to around £139.7bn by 2031.

Phillip Godden, chief executive of TCA, said: "Speed

and compliance are key in our industry. With Modular Clean Air, we’re proving that fully compliant off-site manufactured cleanrooms can be designed, built, and validated in a fraction of the time of traditional builds.

"It’s the ideal solution for research and manufacturing organisations in the fields of pharmaceuticals and life sciences."

The new venture combines TCA's cleanroom engineering expertise with Vanguard

Healthcare Solutions' modular construction and healthcare infrastructure capability, the firms said, to create "a unique partnership between two British companies specialising in the cleanroom and healthcare arena".

Three cleanroom options, all designed and built in Britain, were unveiled at Lab Innovations 2025 at the NEC Birmingham this week (October 29 and 30).

Chris Blackwell-Frost, chief

executive officer of Vanguard Healthcare Solutions, added: "Modular Clean Air brings together two organisations committed to quality, compliance, and speed.

"We’re opening new opportunities for businesses across pharmaceuticals and life sciences, enabling faster speed to production, scale-up and research."

Councils' parking revenues revealed as Sunday charges considered

NEW official figures show that councils made £1.189 billion in profit from off-street and on-street parking – up from £1.043 billion last year and £0.896 billion just before covid.

Total income, revealed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, shows that drivers across the UK forked out £2.338 billion to English councils for parking.

That compares with £2.075 billion last year and £1.758 billion in 2019-20.

London councils hauled in £1.065 billion in income, making up 46% of the total in England.

They made £0.638 billion in profit, making up 54% of the surplus across England.

AA Head of Roads Policy, Jack Cousens, said: “Making £1.2 billion in profit, from an income haul of £2.3 billion, out of people’s pockets and potential consumer spending, is where we are now with so many English city and town councils and their unrestrained costs and fines.

“Originally, council parking charges were supposed to cover the cost of controlled and ordered provision.

“The benefits were to encourage shoppers and other visitors into town and city centres and stimulate commercial activity.

“On-street charges might encourage turnover of spaces and permits were supposed to protect residents’ parking from hogging by outsiders.

“Charges were supposed to cover the cost of providing and enforcing this parking, with some profit from fines and reward for successful parking and commercial policies.

“Anything above that is tax. [The Transport Committee highlighted to Parliament in

2009’s ‘Taxes and charges on road users’ report that “Taxes are compulsory, unrequited payments, whereas charges are paid in return for a service”.

Para 23, House of Commons - Taxes and charges on road users - Transport Committee].

“For too many councils, particularly in cities, the cost of parking seems to have gone from a reasonable charge to a full-on local tax. Why? Because there is next to nothing holding them back. They create new ways and reasons to plunder more money from people with cars, often on low incomes travelling in for work.

“Residents feel hostage to permit costs so high that households often rip up their front gardens and turn them into parking.”

The news comes as Somerset Council considers introducing Sunday charges at car parks it runs across the county.

A consultation over the move recently finished, with a final proposal set to go before the Climate and Place Scrutiny Committee, before a possible final decision at the Executive meeting on December 3.

If agreed, any changes would come into effect in 2026.

Under previous Somerset councils, there were different approaches to Sunday charges in car parks, with the likes of

Watchet, Minehead, Wells, Glastonbury, Frome, Shepton Mallet, Williton and Burnhamon-Sea imposing fees. However, there are no charges currently in Taunton, Wellington, Bridgwater, Chard, Crewkerne, Yeovil and

Highbridge.

The new proposals would bring things in line across the county - but cost people to park - and have been opposed by a number of parish and town authorities who have responded to the consultation.

EASTENDERS

star Ross Kemp is urging Somerset drinkers to back the Royal British Legion (RBL) at county pubs as part of this year’s Poppy Appeal.

Marston’s and the RBL are launching a new, limited-edition commemorative glass for this year’s appeal, with RBL ambassador Ross Kemp encouraging punters to visit one of a number of Somerset pubs to pick one up this November.

Last year, the Raise a Glass campaign raised more than £94,000 for the charity, with Marston’s aiming to raise crucial funds and awareness in support of the Armed Forces community this year.

This year’s glasses, available in pint (£3) and half-pint (£2.50) sizes, feature exclusive artwork designed by Royal Marine veteran and artist, Colin Waite.

Colin served in the Falklands conflict and now immortalises his experiences into powerful illustrations.

His 2025 design shows poppies blooming across the rugged Falklands landscape.

Royal British Legion ambassador and long-time supporter of the Armed Forces, Ross Kemp, joined Colin to see his designs on the glasses for the first time at The Oakingham Belle pub in Wokingham.

The pair were joined by two other veterans, who are both now landlords of Marston’s pubs – Richard Bye, from The Roebuck in Market Harborough, and Chris Taylor and his partner, Moya, who is also an exmilitary wife, from The Volunteer Arms, Barton Upon Humber.

Also in attendance was Paul Gill, a fellow veteran and now head of estate development at the pub chain, responsible for recruiting veteran landlords and supporting them in their transition from service.

Together, they raised a glass in remembrance and to the power of community in

supporting those who served.

Kemp’s connection to the RBL stems from his grandfather serving in the Second World War, and his grandmother spending her final years in an RBL care home.

Over the years, he has actively championed the RBL’s work, from meeting veterans to joining military units in training, to helping raise awareness of the Poppy Appeal.

“I’m immensely proud to support this year’s Raise a Glass campaign, and it was an honour to be with Colin when he saw his designs on the glasses for the very first time,” the actor said.

“I want to encourage as many people as possible to raise a glass to thank our veterans this November. For me, this campaign is personal – my family has been supported by the Royal British Legion, and I know how much their work means to so many.

“Every glass sold helps ensure that veterans, serving personnel, and their families get the support they deserve.”

Jared Sedgwick, director of operations for the Midlands at Marston’s, added: “We were

you get yours

Eastenders actor Ross Kemp helps launch RBL glass: How

blown away with the response to our commemorative poppy pint glasses last year and are so proud to be able to go even bigger with the campaign this year.

“Colin’s designs have made the glasses extra special, and we have even more to sell this year, meaning we can raise even more money for the Royal British Legion.

“Veterans up and down the country are now part of the Marston’s family, whether they’re pub operators, staff, or they visit for one of the many veteran events that our pubs host. Our pubs have some amazing celebrations planned for this year’s Remembrance Day, and we’re hoping to inspire communities across the UK to come together, raise a glass, and make a difference.”

The limited-edition glasses will be available in pubs from Sunday, November 2 until Tuesday, November 11.

MP confronts Prime Minister over 'dental desert' due to lack of NHS services

ASOMERSET MP told the Prime Minister about a resident who pulled out two of her own teeth due to the lack of NHS dentists in Somerset.

Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton) raised the case of a constituent, identified only as Jennifer, during PMQs on Wednesday (October 22).

Ms Dyke, recently named the Lib Dems’ rural affairs spokesperson, highlighted the lack of NHS dentists in the county, calling Somerset a “dental desert”.

“Many in Glastonbury and Somerton are forced to travel hundreds of miles to see an NHS dentist, or suffer in agony, or fall into debt to pay for private treatment, or turn to DIY dentistry like Jennifer, who extracted two of her teeth.

“They simply can’t wait for the consultation on the broken NHS contract – they deserve immediate action.”

“So will the PM outline what

measures he’s taking to end the dental desert in Somerset for good?”

In response, the Prime Minister said: “We are rolling out extra urgent care appointments. In Somerset, (the) ICB (Integrated Care Board) is expected to deliver over 13,000 extra dental appointments this year.

“We’re also reforming the dental contract, which will shift focus on to retaining NHS dentists.”

Previously, Ms Dyke wrote to the health secretary calling for reform of the NHS dental contract, and pressing for greater investment in rural dental services, which she said “have been left in crisis after years of cuts by the previous Conservative administration”.

Later, Ms Dyke said: “Every person in Somerset should be able to see a dentist when they need one. I’ll keep pushing until the Government takes proper action to address the dental desert.”

A GROUP for young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) has a new website - helping people discuss topics and concerns important to them.

The Unstoppables platform includes a run down on everything about the group; who they are, how often they meet, joining details, what they’ve been working on and links.

“The website gives its members a space to share and talk about the topics and concerns that are important to them, about their lived experiences their successes, aspirations, and the changes to local services they’ve helped shape,” a spokesperson said.

“Somerset Council hopes the launch will boost awareness of the group and help even more SEND young people in Somerset discover the Unstoppables experience.”

The Unstoppables is open to all young people with SEND, aged 13 to 25, who live in Somerset, or go to school or college in the county.

Glastonbury and Somerton MP Sarah Dyke confronted PM Sir Keir Starmer over Somerset dentists

Have your say over changes to councils

PEOPLE in North Somerset are being urged to have their say over proposed changes to town and parish councils.

Changes including council boundaries and the number of councillors are among considerations being considered by North Somerset Council as part of a Community Governance Review (CGR), which lays out how decisions are made in communities.

CGRs are carried out every 10 to 15 years to assess changes in communities that may require alterations to authorities governing them.

The current review for North Somerset affects councils at parish level - not North Somerset Council - and people have until the end of the month to comment on proposals.

Among the plans are proposals to:

Reduce the number of town and parish councillors in

Backwell, Locking, WestonSuper-Mare, Long Ashton, Wrington, Blagdon and more

Increase the number of town and parish councillors in Burrington and Portishead

Changes boundaries of parishes including Backwell, Portishead and more

The CGR began in February, with an initial consultation asking residents and local organisations for feedback on possible changes, with the recommendations following that

process now out for response.

People have until midnight on October 31 to submit their comments.

Cllr Mike Bell, leader of North Somerset Council, said: "There’s still time to have your say on the Community Governance Review consultation. This may lead to several changes at a Parish or Town council level where evidence shows this is in the best interests of communities.

"This could include name changes or changing the number

of Parish or Town councillors. For a full list of proposed changes, please read the supporting consultation information."

Once the consultation closes, the council will review feedback and prepare a report for the Planning and Regulatory Committee in December.

At that meeting, the committee will decide which of the draft recommendations to adopt.

n To view the recommendations and all supporting documents, visit www.n-somerset.gov.uk/cgr and submit your response at https://n-somerset.inconsult.uk/ CGRPart2/consultationHome.

n Online responses are preferred, but paper consultation copies can be requested by emailing electoral. services@n-somerset.gov.uk.

'NHS dentist crisis is a national scandal'

OVER the past year, one issue has dominated my casework more than any other: the crisis in NHS dentistry.

Across Glastonbury and Somerton, people are writing to me daily in despair, and often in agony. Some have pulled out their own teeth because they simply can’t access dental care. Others have fallen in to debt to pay for private treatment they can’t afford. Many have been forced to travel the length of the country just to see an NHS dentist.

This is a scandal. There are currently no NHS dentists anywhere in Glastonbury and Somerton taking on new patients.

The system is broken and it is failing people.

That is why, in Prime Minister’s Questions recently, I asked Keir Starmer directly what he is doing to end

Somerset’s dental desert for good.

I told him about Jennifer, a constituent who resorted to DIY dentistry after months of pain.

It is simply not acceptable that people should have to wait years for the system to change, while they suffer in silence. We need urgent action now.

I have been working tirelessly to find solutions, having written to the Health Secretary setting out the scale of the crisis across the constituency and demanding urgent intervention.

I have met repeatedly with the NHS Somerset Integrated Care Board (ICB) to ask them to look at creative, short-term options, including mobile dental units and using space at West Mendip Community Hospital to

host flexible NHS dental services.

These are practical, deliverable suggestions that could bring immediate relief to people locally while longer-term solutions take shape.

The human cost of inaction is staggering. More than 100,000 children have been admitted to hospital with preventable tooth decay since 2018, and in Somerset last year only 42% of children were seen by an NHS dentist.

Every child deserves to grow up free from avoidable pain, and every adult should be able to see a dentist without fear of financial consequences.

The Liberal Democrats have been leading the campaign in Parliament to fix the broken dental contract and ensure fair

funding for rural areas like ours.

We’re pushing the Government to roll out flexible, community-based solutions, such as mobile and schoolbased dentistry, so that everyone can get the care they need.

Access to dental care is a basic right. I’ll keep fighting until that right is accessible for every person in Glastonbury and Somerton.

Please do sign my petition calling on the Government to take action.
