Inspectors praise primary school in Taunton for 'exceptionally-inclusive environment'

ATAUNTON school has been praised by inspectors after a recent evaluation.

Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) inspectors highlighted the ‘exceptionally inclusive environment where pupils and staff flourish’ at Staplegrove Church School.

The report highlights the school’s strong Christian vision, ‘A learning family, being the best version of ourselves’, rooted in John 10:10: ““Life, life in all its fullness.”

Inspectors praised the school for ensuring that its vision is not just words but a lived reality.

Pupils and adults are supported to become the best version of themselves through personalised care, targeted interventions, and a curriculum enriched with opportunities for spiritual, academic, and

personal growth, the report said.

It added how wellbeing is prioritised across the school, with Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust (BWMAT) providing effective support for staff development.

Among the notable strengths identified at Staplegrove Church School were:

A clear and active Christian vision that shapes daily life.

An inclusive culture where every child is empowered to unlock their full potential.

A curriculum that promotes wider flourishing, including music tuition for all Key Stage 2 pupils and experiences such as forest school and horse riding.

A commitment to justice and responsibility through community initiatives and environmental projects.

The report said: “Shaped by the school’s Christian vision, leaders work hard to create a

successful ‘learning family’ where everyone is supported to be the best version of themselves.

“Friendship and mutual respect are central to this. New families are warmly welcomed and quickly integrated into the school community.

“Pupils understand the importance of supporting and encouraging their peers during challenging times and parents note that staff ‘go the extra mile’.”

Headteacher, Paul Armstrong, said: “We are delighted that the SIAMS report recognises the heart of our school – a place where every child and adult is valued and supported to thrive.

“Our vision of being a ‘learning family’ is something we live out every day, and it’s wonderful to see the impact this has on pupils’ confidence,

wellbeing, and sense of purpose.”

The report also commended the school’s partnerships with St John’s Church, the diocese, and BWMAT, which enrich its Christian foundation and contribute to its ethos of care and community.

Nikki Edwards, CEO of Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust, added: “Staplegrove Church School exemplifies what it means to provide ‘life in all its fullness’. The dedication of staff, governors, and the wider community ensures that pupils not only achieve academically but grow spiritually and personally. We are proud to support such a vibrant and nurturing school.”

The inspection concluded Staplegrove Church School is living up to its foundation as a Church school and enabling pupils and adults to flourish.

Charity stalwart Gill, 81, passes away after hitting £500,000 hospice fundraising target

GILL Brown - a dedicated charity fundraiser from Bridgwater - has passed away at the age of 81.

Mrs Brown was awarded a Pride of Britain Award last year for her efforts in raising more than £500,000 for Children's Hospice south West (CHSW) over almost 20 years.

She was described by the charity as "the quiet force behind thousands of collections, events, and bucket shakes in support of CHSW" for her efforts, alongside husband, Stuart.

"Her tireless efforts have brought communities together to support babies, children, and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families, ensuring they receive vital care, comfort, and dignity," the charity said when her Pride of Britain Award was announced.

However, in the background, she was living with a terminal cancer diagnosis - but refused to let it slow her down.

"In fact, just two days after major surgery, she was already on the phone to the team at CHSW’s local hospice, Charlton Farm in Wraxall, asking how she could help next," CHSW said.

At the time, Gill said: "Health professionals told my family they didn’t think I would make it. But I told them, look at me, I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere. I’ve got work to do."

Sadly, she passed away on December 31 at home in Bridgwater, with her family around her. A tribute said she will be "sadly missed by all her family and many friends".

A funeral service is planned at Sedgemoor Crematorium on

January 23, from 1pm.

Donations are being accepted in lieu of flowers for CHSW via

www.hbiffen.co.uk, or sent to H Biffen & Sons Ltd, 32 Wembdon Road, Bridgwater.

Swimming pool plan for estate near

PLANS for a new indoor swimming pool for use by holiday lets near Ilminster have been submitted.

Architects Orme have submitted plans to develop the facility in a “historic courtyard” at the listed Dillington Farm House, at Eaglewood Park, which neighbours the Dillington Estate.

“The purpose of the pool is to be used by a collection of holiday lets on site,” it said.

The site was previously home to a swimming pool, constructed around 2010, but is now in a “poor state”, the application said, with the new development set to improve the condition of the plot.

Ilminster

“While outdoor swimming pools are common in rural domestic curtilages, the indoor form has been chosen to allow year-round use, improve energy efficiency, and ensure greater visual and acoustic containment within the sensitive setting of the listed building,” the application went on.

“The proposal represents a low-impact enhancement to the property’s residential function and enjoyment, consistent with its long-term use as a family dwelling.”

Around 260 jobs to go at Wellington plant set to close

by 2027

Around 260 jobs are set to go after the closure was confirmed

THE KDC/One

Swallowfield plant in Wellington is closing, it has been confirmed, with around 260 jobs to go.

The company said the decision came after a review of the firm’s production processes – and consultation with employees at the Somerset factory.

“As a result of this review, we will absorb the production volume from Swallowfield Wellington and transfer it to our Barony Universal site in Scotland during 2026, so we can operate more efficiently,” a

spokesperson said.

“The move to Scotland will involve a phased transition over the next year, culminating in decommissioning of the Wellington site in 2027.”

They said the company’s “priority remains supporting our employees throughout this period”, with around 260 roles to be made redundant at the cosmetics company.

“We would like to thank Somerset Council, Wellington Town Council and regional business bodies, who have also offered their support for our employees affected by the

closure to secure new employment,” the spokesperson went on. “Over the coming months we will be working with them closely, including the economic development taskforce at Somerset Council.

“We would like to thank all those who have worked for the company, past and present, and contributed to establishing kdc/ one as a global market leader in the manufacture of beauty, body and scented living solutions.”

Reacting to the news, MP Gideon Amos (Lib Dem, Taunton & Wellington) said: “This news will come as a bitter

blow for many of those affected in Wellington and I’m keen to see real help and advice made available.

“I will do whatever I can to support the local people and families affected. I was pleased to reach out to Somerset Council and am glad they are providing support.

“I’m disappointed the Business Secretary hasn’t yet replied to my letter asking how the government can support Swallowfield workers; given the latest announcement I’ll be taking that up in Parliament at the beginning of the week.”

Somerset stars in Agatha Christie series

SOMERSET is once again gracing TV screens after the launch a new Agatha Christie adaptation.

Netflix released Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials – a three-part series – on January 15.

And Somerset provides the backdrop for a number of scenes – including the West Somerset Railway.

“When a lavish country house party ends in murder, a witty young aristocrat sets out

to solve the mystery,” Netflix said.

The production shot on the WSR in June last year.

It comes after the county starred in other films and series in recent years, including the big-screen hit The Salt Path, major Swedish thriller Unmoored, and Dawn French-led BBC series, Can You keep a Secret?.

Man jailed for Taunton wine bottle attack

CHRISTOPHER Cornish has been jailed after attacking a man with wine bottles - leaving him with permanent scars.

Cornish, of no fixed abode, was carrying out a theft at a convenience store in East Street, Taunton, in August last year when the incident unfolded.

The 35-year-old was detained by a man in his 50s in the shop - and hit his assailant in the neck with a wine bottle, which smashed, before then hitting him in the head with a second bottle - causing the victim to pass out and lose a "significant amount" of blood.

On Wednesday (January 14), at Taunton Crown Court sitting in Worle, Cornish pleaded guilty to section 18 grievous bodily harm, intent to resist arrest, and theft, and was jailed for four years and six months.

The court heard how the victim suffered serious injuries in the attack, and was taken to hospital for treatment for deep wounds to the neck and forehead, resulting in permanent scarring.

They required 16 stitches, 10 hours of hospital treatment and

a 90-minute operation. Thankfully, he has since been discharged to continue his recovery at home.

After the sentencing DC Matt Barrett, officer in the case, said:

"This was a truly horrific incident which left a man with

significant injuries, and the permanent scarring he has suffered will serve as a constant reminder of the ordeal.

"Cornish carried out a violent and unjust attack on the victim who stepped in to apprehend him from committing a theft

within the store.

"There were significant aggravating factors within this case, and I would like to thank the police officers and paramedics who attended and treated the victim’s injuries within minutes of the attack."

MPs meet minister in bid to avoid tax rise

SOMERSET MPs joined forces to call for better funding for the county in a bid to avoid another huge rise in council tax.

Last week (January 13), the representatives met with Local Government Minister Alison McGovern (Lab, Birkenhead) to call for extra funding to prevent a possible 11% increase for the Somerset Council area.

The Minister told the county MPs she would consider their proposals and respond as soon as possible.

Lib Dem MPs Gideon Amos (Taunton and Wellington), Adam Dance (Yeovil), Sarah Dyke (Glastonbury and Somerton), Rachel Gilmour (Tiverton and Minehead) and Anna Sabine (Frome and East Somerset) also represented their colleague, Tessa Munt, and Conservative Ashley Fox (Bridgwater) at the meeting.

Previously, the Lib Dems wrote to the Minister, describing the government’s provisional funding settlement for Somerset as “profoundly disappointing”.

And the five Liberal Democrat MPs issued a joint a statement after the meeting, saying they called for a number of changes to support the county.

“The provisional financial settlement for Somerset is a Labour government bombshell in which they look set to force an 11% council tax increase on to Somerset residents –Somerset Lib Dem MPs are fighting against this kind of unaffordable increase," they said. “This proposal from the government has led to council tax payers feeling even more anxious in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis.

“They should not be made to suffer further after what auditors have said were the ‘poor decisions’ of previous Conservative-led administration and their woeful mismanagement of Somerset County Council finances.

“Speaking to the Minister,

Somerset MPs we were crystal clear that the proposed increases would be far too much for residents to be expected to pay and that we strongly oppose it.

“We called on the Minister to increase the level of government funding to ensure any council tax rise would be far more modest.

“We highlighted that, as the fifth biggest council by land area in the country, Somerset suffers massively from the removal of remoteness uplift which recognised the additional costs of providing services in sparsely populated areas like Somerset.

“We also called for the £11 million lost due to Business Rates reform to be refunded and highlighted the reduced public health budget leading to greater strain on care provision.”

They said the meeting had been “constructive”, with the Minister listening to their concerns and inviting them to “submit more information including on the costs of health and care”.

However, they said they “remain concerned that Labour does not properly understand the strain rural communities are under”.

“They must now acknowledge the impact their

changes are having on Somerset and the pressures of delivering vital frontline services across our predominantly rural county,” the MPs added.

“We will be taking up the offer of a further meeting with officials as soon as possible and will continue to press home the need for higher year on year funding from central government for Somerset.

“It should not be for council taxpayers in Somerset to bail out a failing government care funding system.”

In Somerset, they said, two out of every three pounds of council tax paid is spent on care for vulnerable adults and children, which are required by law.

“But the increasing numbers coming forward are placing additional costs of care services on the authority next year, a shortfall the government has failed to fund,” they added.

“Our Somerset councillor colleagues inherited what the previous Conservative council leader called a ‘ticking timebomb’ in the cost of care.

“The council has already made deep cuts, with over 700 jobs going this year, it’s now between a rock and hard place – it is being asked to deliver increased care on reduced

funding.

“As MPs we will continue pushing hard for central Government to step up with the additional support our county needs.

“We are campaigning on behalf of local taxpayers to increase Somerset’s funding settlement to cover services central Government requires the council to deliver on its behalf.”

Mr Fox, the only Conservative MP in the group, said after the meeting: “It is my job to get the best financial settlement for my constituents, so I was happy to meet with the minister and argue with Liberal Democrat MPs that Somerset deserves a better deal. But I also have to tell you that Somerset does not manage our money well.”

He said the meeting was an opportunity to raise specific challenges facing Somerset, including rural service delivery and pressures, but stressed funding alone does not explain the council’s financial position.

“So while I’ll always try and get the best deal for my constituents, I have to say to the Liberal Democrats who are trying to run Somerset Council, they’re not doing a very good job and they’re not looking after our money,” he said.

First new council houses in a generation

THE first new development of council houses in West Somerset for a generation has been officially opened.

Lead member for communities on Somerset Council, Cllr Federica Smith Roberts, cut the ribbon on the 54-homes scheme, in Rainbow Way, Minehead.

All of the eco-friendly homes – a mix of 33 flats and 21 houses – have been let to people with strong connections to the area, the council said.

The site, off Seaward Way, was identified by the former Somerset West and Taunton Council as a potential development plot and seen through by Somerset Council and development partner, Homes in Somerset.

Cllr Smith Roberts said: “We are all delighted to celebrate the opening of the Seaward Way/ Rainbow Way development, a

landmark moment for Minehead, bringing highquality, zero-carbon homes to Somerset which residents deserve.”

Leader of Somerset Council, Cllr Bill Revans, said: “The Seaward Way development opening marks the first council homes to come to the town in 30 years. This is a huge achievement by everyone

involved, bringing the types of home to the area that residents can be proud of.”

Duncan Harvey, head of housing growth and regeneration at Homes in Somerset, added: “We’re thrilled to be celebrating the completion of this impressive new council housing project. Homes in Somerset is proud to have worked alongside

Somerset Council to bring forward high-quality, energy-efficient homes that meet local need.

“Today’s success underlines our shared ambition to deliver more energy-efficient, affordable council owned homes across Somerset, creating great places, supporting local jobs and skills and improving residents’ health and wellbeing.

“We look forward to continuing this partnership with Somerset Council as they advance their ambitious housebuilding programme, helping to turn strategic commitments into real homes for Somerset people.”

The homes were built by Classic Builders, funded through the Housing Revenue Account, Homes England Grant Funding, Right to Buy receipts and developer contributions.

Police desk in Yeovil to close ahead of station refurbishment

YEOVIL’S police station desk ay Horsey Lane will close later this month as it is relocated.

The enquiry desk will shut on Monday, January 26, while it is moved to a new site, on Brympton Way.

The move is expected to take around six weeks while the building is dismantled, relocated and prepared for public use.

During the temporary closure, members of the public can visit enquiry offices in Chard, Wincanton or Bridgwater, call 101, or contact their local Neighbourhood

Policing team via www. avonandsomerset.police.uk/ your-area.

The number of police officers and PCSOs on duty in the area will not be affected by the closure.

It comes ahead of a multimillion pound refurbishment of Yeovil Police Station at Horsey Lane, which is set to begin next month.

TCi (GB) Ltd has been appointed as the contractor for the work, which will result in a revamped, modern police station for the town, due to be completed in early 2027.

Neighbourhood Inspector Rose Green said: “Relocating our current temporary enquiry office is an important step in allowing the major refurbishment of Yeovil Police Station to begin.

“This exciting investment will ultimately provide our officers and staff with a modern working environment, with better facilities for our teams to enable them to provide outstanding policing for the communities we serve.

“While the relocation is taking place, we will continue to have a strong presence in the

town and residents can still reach us by phone, online or at our nearby enquiry offices.”

Officers moved out of the Horsey Lane station in 2019 and relocated to Somerset Council’s Brympton Way offices.

Since then, a temporary police enquiry office has remained open at Horsey Lane for members of the public to attend and speak to us face-toface.

However, a final business case approved in August last year, following a procurement process to secure a contractor, meaning the work could begin.

Gritters get pun-tastic names thanks to pupils

OOPS, Somerset youngsters have done it again, with some puntastic names for new gritters taking to county roads.

Somerset Council and highways contractor Kier launched an appeal for school pupils in the county to come up with names for two new vehicles.

And after sifting through scores of suggestions, the new vehicles will be named Basil Salty and Gritney Spears. They were named by young people at the South Somerset Partnership School and Bucklers Mead Academy – both in Yeovil – respectively.

The schools can now look forward to a visit from their gritter to check out their name on the vehicle.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and waste, said: "Thank you to everyone who took part, the schools for their amazing and creative name suggestions. We are always ready to grit one more time if the weather turns icy.

"We can’t wait to see Gritney Spears and Basil Salty on the road this winter, keep an eye out for them on your travels."

Previous years have seen gritters named Gritty Gritty Bang Bang and Spready Mercury.

New headteacher unveiled at Somerset school

AN INDEPENDENT

Somerset school has appointed a new headteacher.

Perrott Hill School has confirmed Will Silk –previously deputy head for 15 years – will take on the role from April after the resignation of current leader, Alex McCullough, who is set to become headteacher at Orwell Park School, in Suffolk.

Welcoming Mr Silk, a school spokesperson said: “He is an exceptional leader, with a

proven track record of nurturing character and creating an environment in which pupils positively thrive.

“His experience, energy, and vision align seamlessly with the values and aspirations of the school.

“He replaces Mr McCullough who has led the school for the last eight years with dedication and a deep commitment to the pupils in his care.”

The move comes as Perrott Hill enters a “pivotal moment”, the spokesperson said,

following the announcement of a series of proposed changes and developments after the school became part of the Perrott Hill Education Group.

“They have recently committed to an ambitious five-year investment and development plan, so this is a very exciting moment in the history of the school as they look to further strengthen facilities, opportunities for pupils and educational outcomes,” the spokesperson said.

“Mr Silk’s tenure as Headmaster will play a central role in shaping and leading this next phase with ambition, clarity and purpose,” they added.

“I care deeply about this school and the community connected to it,” said newlyappointed Mr Silk.

“To be part of Perrott Hill is to be part of something special. I am proud of the school’s distinguished history, traditions, values and ethos, and look forward to building on this tremendous legacy.”

Robert Charles Ford, chair of governors for Perrott Hill, added: “Mr Silk is dedicated and caring and we feel immensely positive about the future under his leadership.”

Speaking about his new role in Suffolk, Mr McCullough said: “I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed to lead such a wonderful school as Orwell Park at this exciting period in its history.”

Work to start on nursery expansion at primary school

PLANS to expand a nursery in Bishops Lydeard are moving forward – with work starting as early as next month.

Bishops Lydeard Church School has announced the official launch of the £370,000 nursery expansion, after funding was secured from Bishops Lydeard Parish Council.

Children could be welcomed to the new, expanded facility, as early as September.

The school said in recent years, demand for nursery places had consistently outstripped supply, with the existing premises in Mount Street oversubscribed.

In recent years, a coordinated funding initiative has resulted in funds from:

Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) contributions, approved by the Parish Council on 10 December Bath & Wells Multi Academy Trust

A Nursery Capital Grant from the Department for Education; outcome expected April 2026

The combined funding meets the £370,000 target required to refurbish The Old School House, adjacent to the main school, creating a modern, spacious nursery with wraparound care options.

Headteacher at the school, James Dakin, said: “Bishops Lydeard Church School is thrilled by the support we have received from our community.

“It has been a long journey with many challenges along the way.

"However, this project will now have an increased impact for children in our local area, increasing spaces in our nursery, and give children the best start in life.

“We believe that the nursery expansion will enable more children to actively experience our vision of ‘Living life in all its fullness.

“With the help of our parent

team, Rachel Gilmour MP and the Parish Council, to whom we are very thankful for, we are now in a position where we can start building works in February.

“While we await the decision of the much needed funding from the Department for Education nursery capital grant request, we are in a place where our dream, vision and values can start to come into a reality.”

Bath & Wells MultiAcademy Trust CEO, Nikki Edwards, said: “This vital expansion is a testament to what can be achieved when school, local decision makers and the Trust work together for children and families.”

Drivers warned over parking after bus routes abandoned

DRIVERS in a West Somerset village are being warned to park safely – and allow enough rooms for buses to pass.

Milverton Parish Council said it had taken the decision to remind motorists of their responsibilities after “a couple of instances” of “poor parking”.

They fear the problem could see bus operators cancel services to the village, including the Number 25.

“We have recently had a couple of instances where ‘poor’ parking, or the parking of a larger vehicle, has resulted in the 25 bus service not being able to negotiate Wood Street and, particularly, North Street,” a council spokesperson said.

“This resulted in the bus service being

abandoned on those days.

“We do not wish to give the bus company any reasons to not come through Milverton, as the bus service is a vital lifeline to many of our parishioners.

“Also, these instances could potentially impact access for emergency services.”

They urged residents and visitors to keep the warning in mind – and for those in larger vehicles to find an alternative place to park.

“Car owners are respectfully reminded that just because parked vehicles do not cross the central white line, it still means they may be causing an obstruction to traffic flows ad the buses, etc, need a clear width that will overlap the central white line in narrower places,” the spokesperson added.

Celebration Mile blamed in part for closure

ABRIDGWATER

motorcycle showroom and equipment store is closing down at the end of this month – and has blamed the move in-part on the controversial Celebration Mile project.

Anderson & Wall, in Church Street, will close its doors for the final time on January 30.

Owner Richard Humphrey has confirmed he is retiring and closing the business – and took a swipe at the troubled Celebration Mile project, which saw a raft of roadworks close roads in the town centre to create a pedestrian and cycle route from the train station to Bridgwater Docks.

Road closures and works associated with the initiative have been blamed for falling trade by traders in the town –including Richard, who took over the running of the firm from his parents.

“I always knew, especially since I became a sole trader and, obviously, getting older, that one day I would have to retire and sell up. Well, unfortunately, that time has now come and I have decided to close the business,” he said.

“As well as retiring it has also become untenable for us to continue and, sadly, the final nail in the coffin (and I’m sorry to keep on banging the same drum) has been the so-called Celebration Mile.

“We have struggled for the last two years and it has been really difficult with customers trying to find us or being unable to get to us, firstly due to the roadworks and now Eastover area is finished, customers and ourselves have to drive around the perimeter of Bridgwater just to get to Church Street.

“It has not been an easy decision to make. I started working for Anderson & Wall as soon as I left school, as it was my mother and father’s business, having purchased the former business and garage in High Street (now the Engine

Room).

“My father, Dennis, worked for Anderson & Wall for many, many years. We’ve always believed the company was started in 1918 and know they had numerous premises in and around the St Mary Street area.

“Many people will probably remember them from the corner of Dampiet Street (now Fine Memorials) and we also know they had a tyre depot on the opposite corner and workshops in Friarn Street.

"We tried a few years ago to find evidence of dates but could only find photographs. We also could only find dates back to 1923, unfortunately.

“Even so, this still makes the company over 100 years old, so definitely the end of an era.”

He spoke of how the business had progressed from dealing “mainly with motorcycles in the early years”, to becoming a franchise for the classic Reliant three-wheeler while still in the High Street, before moving to Church Street in the late 70s.

“Sadly, my father passed away in 1995 and the business was left to my brother John and I to continue, with mum’s continued interest and help, to this day,” he went on.

“John and I had quite a few years selling mainly lightweight scooters and motorcycles and helmets and clothing helping to give the young, local individuals independence for getting to work and college, as well as adults looking for cheaper and convenient modes of transport.

“John died in 2012, unexpectedly leaving the future of Anderson & Wall in my hands, not what I was expecting.

“All that remains for me to say is a massive thank you to all the many, many customers who have supported us over the years. We shall miss you and your cars, Reliants, trikes and motorcycles and scooters.

“We hate the thought of letting you all down, even though we only see some of you for your annual MOT test. Any scooters or motorcycles that we have sold, especially those with warranty, can go to any bonafide dealer for continued servicing and warranty work.

“Hopefully, we have kept many of you on the road and we have always tried to be fair and honest with all our customers.”

MP Ashley Fox (Con, Bridgwater), visited the store after the announcement, and said: “It was incredibly difficult meeting Richard and hearing first-hand how a 107-year-old family business has been pushed to the brink.

“Anderson and Wall has not reached this point because of poor decisions by the owners, it has reached this point because Somerset Council’s actions cut off customers and damaged trade.

“Businesses were told they would benefit once the Eastover and Celebration Mile works were finished, and that promise has not been kept.

“Add to that a more than doubling of business rates and

rising employment costs, and it becomes clear why so many local businesses are struggling.

“This is a real loss for Bridgwater, and it should never have been allowed to happen.”

Work on the Celebration Mile was beset by delays and issues with the quality of the work, with one council leader branding it “simply not good enough”.

Cllr Mike Rigby, the authority’s lead member for economic development, planning and assets, said in September last year: “This is an important scheme to improve the shopping experience and open up the area for street events, such as entertainment and markets.

“We have always been fully committed to the concept, but I am very disappointed at how this has been delivered.

“We understand there will be challenges with a job of this scale, but there doesn’t appear to have been sufficient contingency planning around these in terms of increasing the pace of work, and at the same time both the council and public have been informed too late of delays, road closures and programme changes.

“When you compare this with other recently completed council infrastructure projects the performance here is simply not good enough.”

And Conservative leader on Somerset Council, Cllr Diogo Rodrigues (Con, Bridgwater East & Bawdrip), called the project “an absolute shambles”.

After the project was completed, a new one-way system was introduced in the town, which also provoked fury from many residents and businesses, who claimed it made travelling into and out of town difficult – and hit trade.

Leader of the council, Cllr Bill Revans (Lib Dem, North Petherton), said the scheme was inherited from the previous Tory administration and would be amended to deal with issues.

company touted as the UK’s first to be based on the “partnership between people and AI” has expanded into Somerset.

10 Years Ahead, co-founded by former MP Ruth Edwards and Owen Edwards, a politics, planning and data-led technology communications expert, is working with clients in the county as it continues to grow.

The founders said 10 Years Ahead is “built on a new model: combining the power of long-standing relationships, political experience and local understanding with advanced AI tools”.

The firm’s AI tools are used to find patterns, read millions of public conversations and provide real-time clarity for clients, with companies in the housing, infrastructure, energy, technology and regulated industries in Somerset among

those signing up.

Founders Ruth and Owen live on the Somerset-Devon border and the company recently joined the Somerset Chamber of Commerce.

“Strong relationships increasingly matter more than anything – but they work best

when they’re backed by real insight,” said Ruth.

“Our model brings those two things together for organisations in Somerset and across the south west.”

Before founding 10 Years Ahead, Ruth was the Conservative MP for Rushcliffe,

in Nottinghamshire, and worked in cyber security before being elected.

She lost her seat at the 2024 General Election to Labour’s James Naish.

Car sales pod plan at supermarket

CAR sales firm WeBuyAnyCar.com wants to build a ‘pod’ in a Glastonbury car park to allow people to drop of their vehicles.

Plans have been submitted to Somerset Council by Whittam Cox Architects, on behalf of Morrisons, for a single-storey prefabricated, modular pod in the supermarket car park off Street Road and Oriel Drive.

Pods allow staff a base and a site where customers can complete paperwork when dropping off vehicles.

“Access to the pod is via the existing Morrisons car park access and through the existing retail car park,” the plans said.

“Careful consideration has been placed in the positioning of the pod to ensure that there is no disruption to vehicular and pedestrian circulation and that site will continue to operate as existing.

“The pod is positioned on existing parking bays which will reduce the total parking numbers by two standard car parking bays.

“Existing white lines will be burnt off and the new area will be de-marked to provide safe access into the new pods.”

A total of 10 parking spaces would be reserved for vehicles

using the pod, with cars staying on the site for no longer than 72 hours, the applications said.

“WeBuyAnyCar.com have very little impact on a site as they make use of spaces out of the way from where Morrisons customers normally park,” it added. “The sites are controlled by their national systems, to which all their transport teams

have access to and can prioritise collections accordingly.”

Currently, nearby WeBuyAnyCar.com pods include those located in Yeovil and Bridgwater, Taunton, and Frome.

Work begins ahead of M5 route upgrades

WORK ahead of major improvements at a motorway junction in Somerset got started this week - and are set to run until late March.

Advance works to prepare the Edithmead roundabout at junction 22 of the M5 – between Burnham-on-Sea and Barrow Gurney – for the improvements set to start later in the year.

Somerset Council, in partnership with North Somerset Council, has secured funding for the roadworks from the government, and said “a significant number of trees and vegetation” need to be cleared from the site, with lane closures and traffic lights in place at various times.

“There will be a landscaping package at the conclusion of the project to ensure as much vegetation as possible is replaced around the new road

Work is underway at the Edithmead roundabout, near Burnham-on-Sea

layout,” a Somerset Council spokesperson said.

The improvements are aimed at cutting traffic and to improve the A38 from junction 22 of the M5 to the South Bristol Link (Colliters Way) for pedestrians and cyclists.

Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “It’s good to see this important work go ahead, we have lobbied hard to secure the money to improve a busy and vital stretch of the A38 in

Somerset.

“We understand people may be concerned about the clearance – rest assured there will be a full landscaping package for greenery after the project has concluded.”

A38 schemes in the Somerset Council area include:

n Edithmead Roundabout near J22 M5: Creation of a throughabout option with signalisation of all arms of the roundabout.

n Rooksbridge: Safety scheme comprising mainly road markings.

n Cross: Creation of a staggered junction design at Cross which has been discussed with relevant landowners.

n Strawberry Line Crossing: An improved crossing of the A38 at Shute Shelve

n Sustainable travel: Improvements to bus stops and pedestrian/cycling facilities at various locations.

The pod will be constructed in the Morrisons car park, if plans are approved

Local authorities set to receive new powers to install fresh pavement parking bans

RULES to ban parking on pavements - causing problems for disabled people, those with pushchairs and more - are to become easier to implement, the Government has announced.

Disability groups have long campaigned on the issue of blocked pavements, which can create serious barriers for parents with pushchairs, wheelchair users, blind and partially-sighted people and the elderly.

Now, following a public consultation, the Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed local leaders will be given new legal powers to make it easier to restrict pavement parking.

The changes will mean councils will be able to introduce bans across wider areas - rather than the previous approach of taking action on a street-by-street basis - while retaining flexibility in some spaces.

"That’s why we’re giving local authorities the power to crack down on problem pavement parking, allowing more people to travel easily and safely and get to where they need to go."

The move has been welcomed by campaign groups, including Guide Dogs, whose chief executive, Andrew Lennox, said: "After years of campaigning, we welcome the announcement to give councils greater powers to tackle problem pavement parking.

"Cars blocking pavements are a nuisance for everyone, but especially dangerous for people with sight loss, who can be forced into the road with traffic they can’t see.

Announcing the move, Local Transport Minister, Lilian Greenwood MP (Lab, Nottingham South), said: "Clear pavements are essential for people to move around safely and independently, whether that’s a parent with a pushchair, someone using a wheelchair, or a blind or partially sighted person.

"Pavement parking is also a barrier that shuts people out of

everyday life. When pavements are blocked, people with sight loss lose confidence, independence and the freedom to travel safely. This stops people accessing work, education and social opportunities.

"We look forward to working with the government and local authorities to ensure these changes are introduced quickly and consistently enforced so pavement parking becomes a thing of the past."

And RAC senior policy officer, Rod Dennis, said: "Our research shows a clear majority

of drivers agree that no pavement user should be made to walk or wheel into the road because of someone else’s inconsiderate parking.

"These proposals should clear the way for councils to prevent pavement parking where it causes problems, but permit drivers to partially park on pavements where doing so helps keep traffic flowing and doesn’t inconvenience other people."

Guidance for local authorities - such as Somerset Council - on the new powers will come later in the year.

MP meets to discuss rural crime concerns

WEST Somerset MP

Rachel Gilmour (Lib Dem, Tiverton & Minehead) has raised concerns over crime in rural areas with a Government Minister.

Earlier this month, Mrs Gilmour met Policing and Crime Minister Sarah Jones (Labour, Croydon West), pictured, to discuss the problem, which she said has hit her constituency hard.

Gathering at the Home Office, the Somerset MP outlined how constituents had seen a surge in robberies and antisocial behaviour in rural areas, as well as asking for assurances that the Government had a “comprehensive and strategic approach” to tackling rural crime.

Recent statistics from NFU Mutual showed between 2023 and 2024, there was a 168.7% increase in rural thefts across Somerset. In the same period, there was a 40.5% increase in

Devon.

The Minister described rural crime prevention as a “Home Office priority” and told Tiverton and Minehead’s MP that the issue was “high on the agenda”.

She also confirmed the Home Office was focussing on an “intelligence-led” approach to

finding those culpable of committing crimes in rural areas and spoke about the future opportunities for local authorities and representatives to hold police chiefs to account following the abolishment of police and crime commissioners in 2028.

After the meeting, Mrs

Gilmour said: “In my meeting with the minister, I made it clear that more must be done to support communities in Tiverton and Minehead and across the UK.

“My office has been dealing with an increasing amount of casework relating to rural crime, and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to explain to the minister why we need to see a new strategy from central government as soon as possible.

“I was assured that the Government has a plan to tackle crime in rural areas.

“However, now is time to see action from this government as rural communities across Tiverton and Minehead both need and deserve more support.

“I will continue to hold the Government to account to deliver improvements for our constituency.”

Youth opinions on public transport sought

YOUNG people across Taunton and Wellington are being urged to have their say on public transport as part of a survey by the areas' MP.

Gideon Amos (Lib Dem, Taunton & Wellington), alongside Somerset National Youth Parliament member James Lawson, has launched an online consultation into the issue.

Students across Taunton and Wellington are being asked for their views on all forms of public transport - particularly the us route.

"Young people are an extremely important demographic of people who rely on public transport," Mr Amos said.

"That is why I want to know their views on what is working for them and, more importantly, what isn’t.

"We’ll be collating all the information into a report which we will then take to transport operators and local authorities as part of our drive for improvements in line with people's wishes and needs."

James said: "I am pleased to support Gideon in his efforts to deliver meaningful improvements to public transport and to the services which provide young people with safe, reliable, and essential travel options.

"This survey represents a thoughtful and practical step forward, driven by our desire to see direct, positive outcomes for young people in our communities.

"I am proud to be involved in an initiative which listens to young people’s experiences and works to turn their feedback into real change."

take part, who don’t see the survey online, can ask for a copy at their school/college

Survey wants views on food in Somerset

SOMERSET’S food habits – and struggles – are being sought in a bid to help those in need and improve services.

Somerset Council’s Public Health team has launched a survey to build a picture of the food habits of residents which will help plan future projects and priorities.

Insights from the survey will help the Public Health team build a clearer picture of behaviours and attitudes across Somerset, the council said.

Councillor Graham Oakes, Executive member for Public Health, climate change and environment, said: “The wellbeing of our residents is a priority. By sharing your experiences and views it will help us to better understand our community’s choices and priorities with food. Your views will help us to understand what’s important and how we can help you.

“This is the first time we have done an annual population food survey and we encourage residents to share their experiences with us. It is open to all adults living in Somerset.

“The survey will only take about 15 minutes to complete, and we are offering a chance to win a £100 gift voucher to anyone who responds.”

The Somerset Food Survey is available online at somersetcouncil.citizenspace.com/public-health/somerset-foodsurvey and will be open until January 31.

Fancy owning your own reservoir? Here's your chance!

WE all have our idea of a dream property – a sprawling country estate, or an elegant London townhouse, perhaps – but what about a reservoir?

Well, that is on offer in Somerset, with a Victorianconstructed reservoir and attached buildings is going up for auction.

Being marketed by Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH), Wembdon Reservoir, at Sandford Hill, Bridgwater, is among lots for sale – with a guide price of £220,000.

The property, of around 1.4 acres, is made up of a multichamber brick structure, which the listing says is “made of six rows of brick vaulted arches with 28 brick vaulted domes around the perimeter”.

“The structure is approximately 32m x 32m wide x 4.3m high internally in the form of a cross and a series of cross supports,” it went on.

“The reservoir is contained in a raised soil mound occupying the rear two thirds of the site.

“Outside the reservoir, the front third of the site comprises

a small building housing redundant pumps and valves access to the site and trees.

“The site is post and rail fenced to the north with brick walls to the southern and eastern boundaries.”

The listing said the property offered “development potential subject to planning”.

Wembdon Reservoir is set to be sold at auction on February 18 at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, in North Petherton.

The next generation of engineers getting hands-on experience at Somerset firm

ANEW partnership is giving young people the chance to undertake an apprenticeship at a Somerset business.

Heidelberg Materials’ Whatley quarry has joined forces with the Somerset Studio School, in Radstock, and the Somerset Earth Science Centre, to help nurture the next generation of engineers.

The partnership gives students valuable hands-on experience in the quarry as part of their Engineering T Level qualification.

Harrison T, from Frome, has been spending one day per week at Whatley quarry, completing the 45-day industry placement required for the qualification, equivalent to three A Levels and designed to prepare students for skilled employment, further study or apprenticeships.

During the placement, 17-year-old Harrison has gained experience in areas including materials, product types, and health and safety, as well as working alongside mechanical maintenance teams and the electrical department.

“My industry placement at Whatley quarry is a great opportunity to see engineering

in action,” he said.

“I’m learning how plant and machinery, including the wash plant, are maintained, how safety is managed and how different teams work together to support the quarry’s operations.

“It’s giving me skills that I wouldn’t get in a classroom alone, and I’m excited to pursue

a career in the construction industry after completing this course.”

Vincent Pitt, area manager at Heidelberg Materials, said:

“The T Level qualification is an important addition to our early careers pipeline.

“It introduces young people to careers in quarrying and

construction and we hope it will help to address the skills shortages across the sector.”

And Dr Gill Odolphie, education manager at Somerset Earth Science Centre, added: “This is a great way to get young people into our industry, and we already have other colleges lining up wanting placements for their students.

“We’re glad to have been able to help facilitate this and hats off to the amazing team at Whatley for supporting students gain such valuable experience in our industry.”

Sarah Jackson, T Level work placement coordinator at the MNSP Trust, which runs Somerset Studio School, said: “The T Level qualification is a brilliant qualification, allowing students to study and gain hands-on experience. Being able to work with local industries is really vital to the students’ success and their future.

“We are so pleased to have the support from Heidelberg Materials and look forward to what the future may hold.”

Pupils take on the long learning of the law!

YOUNGSTERS at a Somerset school are learning about law as part of a special initiative starting this month.

Pupils at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, are gearing up to take part in the Mini Police Programme, which sees young people join forces with police in their community.

Children from Years 4, 5, and 6 will work alongside PCSO Will Mortimer of Avon & Somerset Police to learn about law enforcement, community safety, and civic responsibility.

Police and schools said the programme is designed to help pupils build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and gain a strong sense of social justice, while encouraging a positive relationship with local policing.

Ellen Croker, headteacher at St Benedict’s, said: “We’re delighted to take part in this innovative programme.

“Our pupils will gain more than just knowledge of community safety. They will learn to take initiative, show empathy, and believe in their ability to make a positive difference.

“I can’t wait to see them grow in confidence and take on new challenges.”

Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, added: “What a wonderful initiative. It helps pupils develop skills and confidence that make a real difference, not just within their school, but across the wider community."
