METAL MAN STATUE PLAN

Bridgwater unites for premiere of film telling the real story of the town...

MORE than 200 people took to the red carpet in Bridgwater for the premiere of a new short film created with people who live and work in the town.

Brick by Brick, which debuted at Scott Cinemas on January 21, tells the story two young, aspiring TikTok influencers who attempt to kick-start their careers by mocking their hometown in a viral video steeped in stereotypes.

But their plan backfires when the community challenges them to look again.

As they dig deeper, they discover the real Bridgwater...

So what did members of the audience on the night think?

Somerset Councillor Gill Slocombe (Con, Bridgwater West) said: "I felt so emotional. The whole concept was just so brilliant. It made me feel as though I was looking at Bridgwater through new eyes. I really loved it."

Giles Adams, chair of Visit Somerset, said: "I thought it was utterly charming. It was full of character. There was humour, warmth and everything. And of course there was a journey in it. Absolutely delightful."

Bridgwater Mayor, Cllr Kathy Pearce, said: "I really enjoyed it. It was so good. Turning around the negativity into something really positive. There needs to be a part two, three and four."

And Bridgwater resident, Yolanda Bentham, said: "It brought tears to my eyes on a couple of occasions because it’s true we do rubbish this town and it’s got so much going for it."

Brick by Brick was written

by Somerset-based screenwriter Helen Tompson, inspired by stories, themes and ideas gathered through public consultations and workshops.

Directed by Archie Rowell, the film was commissioned by the Bridgwater Town Deal Board and produced in partnership with Somerset Film, based at The Engine Room.

Jeremy James, Animating the Town officer for the Bridgwater Town Deal Board, added: "Brick by Brick is a massive

community achievement, brilliantly led by Somerset film but also involving a huge community effort not just those who had leading roles but all the community that came along to help out, the businesses, the talented technical team, this was a genuine team effort and the start at the middle of it is Bridgwater itself."

Producer for Somerset Film, Deb Richardson, said: "The film features community groups, 18 local businesses, and two key events in the town’s cultural calendar - all in just 14 minutes.

"As ever, the community really rallied around us, offering filming locations such as The Bunch of Grapes and the Brick and Tile Museum, and volunteering as extras. Led by a professional cast and crew, it’s been a privilege to bring together so many people."

Brick by Brick will be screened for free at Scott Cinema, in Northgate Yard, Bridgwater, at 5.30pm each day from Friday, February 6 to Thursday, February 12. Visit somersetfilm.com/ whats-on or call 01278 433187 to book tickets.

Funding for better access to Yeovil station

PASSENGER access at Yeovil Junction station looks set to improve thanks to government funding.

The station has been given the go-ahead for its Access For All scheme, with detailed design work now set to begin – ahead of a final decision over the full programme of improvements to lifts and a footbridge.

Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said the decision marked an important milestone for inclusive transport in the county.

He said: “This is very welcome news for Yeovil and the many people who rely on Yeovil Junction to travel for work, education and leisure.

“Improving accessibility at our stations is a vital step forward if we want our transport network to work for everyone, particularly people with

disabilities, reduced mobility, parents with buggies and older residents.”

The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed Yeovil Junction as one of 31 stations across the country that will receive funding to progress the detailed designs.

Cllr Wilkins said at this stage, funding has been confirmed for detailed design only, with a final decision on construction dependent on the outcome of that work.

He added: “While there are no guarantees at this point, early feasibility studies have not raised any major concerns, and we remain optimistic.

“We will continue to work closely with Network Rail, South Western Railway and the Department for Transport to make the strongest possible case for delivery.”

MP Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil) also welcomed the news.

He said: “This is a positive step for disabled people, older residents, parents with pushchairs and anyone who finds the station hard to use.

“Since being elected, I have been pushing for better access at

our local stations, and I am pleased to see progress.

"There is more work to do to make these changes happen, and I will keep pressing for Yeovil Junction to be accessible for everyone.”

See a great show - and get a guitar lesson too!

GUITAR players will be excited to see virtuoso songwriter Newton Faulkner in Somerset this summer – and could even get some tips from the man himself.

Faulkner, who shot to stardom on the back of his hit Dream Catch Me, is set to perform at the Cheese and Grain, Frome, on Thursday, June 11.

As well as regular tickets for the show being on sale at £33.50 plus a standard service charge, guitar players can also sign up for special VIP and guitar workshop entry – but there are a very limited number available.

“Newton Faulkner is continually adjusting to a music landscape dominated by flux, he’s moved from the phenomenal success of his debut album Hand Built By Robots to the surging triumph of Write It On Your Skin; from Studio Zoo – which was the

first album ever to be live streamed online while being recorded, and was also recorded and released in just five weeks – to the sumptuous Human Love, plus multiple other records over his incredible 15 year career so far,” a spokesperson said.

His latest longplayer, Octopus, is out now.

And those signing up for VIP or guitar workshop tickets can get early access to the Frome venue, meet Newton in person before the show, and take home a signed souvenir package.

The guitar workshop will allow fans to bring along their guitars and get a tip or two from the man himself, as well as enjoying the benefits of VIP tickets – starting three hours before the show.

Clive traded pints for purpose in career

MORE than two decades of running pubs, restaurants and hotels led a Yeovil man to pursue a career helping solve a problem he became convinced he was part of – mental health.

Clive Pullen lived and breathed hospitality, managing bustling pubs, lively restaurants, even a hotel or two.

The perks were good, the pace relentless, and he was successful.

But as he moved up the ladder, he began to notice something he couldn’t ignore: the number of staff and customers struggling with mental health.

“I realised I was part of the problem, not the solution. I was running businesses that sold alcohol while seeing the toll it was taking on people. It became harder and harder to square that with myself,” he said.

So Clive walked away from his career in hospitality and set out on the road of social care,

working with Lifeways, in a life change he described as going “from pints to purpose”, using the skills he had developed to succeed in his new role.

“The ability to stay calm when things get heated, to listen, to persuade, to negotiate – that’s hospitality in a nutshell,” he said. “And it’s the same in support.”

Instead of juggling rotas and customer complaints, Clive was now scheduling care teams, coaching colleagues, and helping people navigate the everyday challenges of independent living.

He began as a support worker, before progressing to service manager, responsible for staff, residents, and the longterm success of a scheme.

“As a manager, I see myself as a coach and a mentor,” he said. “Whether you’re guiding a team member or calming someone in crisis, it’s all about helping people reach their best.”

He draws on commercial

know-how too, overseeing payroll, rotas, budgets and even insight into health and safety and fire safety – all tools of the trade he learned while running pubs and hotels.

“I was surprised by how little commercial awareness there sometimes was in social care,” he went on. “But those basics from hospitality can really strengthen a team and a service.”

But he said his new career had brought meaning he never found in hospitality, with a more personal feeling of success.

He told the story of a man who had spent years in institutional settings, disconnected from everyday life, for whom a simple shopping trip became transformative.

“He didn’t know what a contactless card was, or how to use a self-checkout,” Clive said. “Sharing those small life skills – things most of us take for granted – that’s priceless.”

Another time, a person who had once been detained for violent behaviour thanked Clive and his team for helping him stay calm in his own home.

“Those moments are worth more than anything I ever got in hospitality,” he added.

And Clive said there are others who would benefit from making the kind of career decision he did, and utilising their empathy, resilience, and people skills to excel in social care.

“If you’re good with people, you can succeed in both sectors,” he added. “We just need to encourage more people to take that leap.

“I’ve never once woken up dreading going to work since moving into social care. And after 30 years in the workplace, that says everything.”

Delay over Yeovil jobs is "act of self-harm"

“THE Government’s inertia on this issue is an act of selfharm.”

Those were the words of Unite union chief Sharon Graham amid ongoing uncertain over future military supply contracts – which could threaten thousands of jobs in Yeovil.

Workers at the Leonardo factory in the Somerset town are waiting on news of contracts from the long-promised Defence Investment Plan (DIP).

Announcing the new plan a year ago, the Government said details of contracts would be published last summer, alongside the Strategic Defence Review. However, that was pushed back until the end of 2025, and now, could be facing further delays.

Last week, when quizzed by MP Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil) over delays to the decision, Minister for Defence Procurement Luke Pollard said an announcement would be coming “shortly”, and that Leonardo remained “an important strategic partner for the Ministry of Defence (MoD)”.

But Unite, which represents thousands of defence works in the UK, has hit out at the Government over the delays and said it was a matter of jobs and national security.

“The government’s constant dithering is not only putting thousands of jobs at risk but also endangering the specialist skills that the UK needs to make fighter jets, military helicopters, drones and satellites in the future,” a spokesperson said.

Calling the delays “acts of self-harm”, Unite said the Government needed to “urgently publish the DIP” and to ensure that it includes the awarding of the new medium lift helicopter contract to Leonardo, to be manufactured at their plant in Yeovil and more.

Provisions for the MoDs Military Satellite Communications System (Skynet) to continue being built in Portsmouth and Stevenage, as it has for the last 20 years.

Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary, said: “The government’s inertia on this issue is an act of self-harm. With employers planning in the dark and threatening job losses as a result, the government needs to stop the dither and delay.

“Failing to back British defence manufacturing would be a devastating own goal, destroying jobs and skills.

“When the announcement was made for higher defence spending, it came with guarantees around jobs, skills and innovation. We now need to

move beyond the warm words and deliver.”

Meanwhile, senior Unite defence reps at Leonardo and other key defence sites have written directly to prime minister Keir Starmer calling for him to act swiftly. They wrote of how further delays would be “too late for

“The economic value of this site extends well beyond the immediate workforce. It supports a highly-skilled, unionised workforce and a national supply chain that delivers substantial returns to the Exchequer.

“These are precisely the types of high-value industrial jobs that a government committed to growth should be seeking to protect and expand.”

They warned the delays were risking allowing the UK defence industry to “wither”.

And at PMQs last Wednesday (January 21), Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey called on the Prime Minister to make a decision.

"We have to re-arm, fast, so why wont the Prime Minister just get on with buying Great British helicopters made in the west country?,” he said.

Sir Keir Starmer said the administration had announced record spending on defence.

MP: Temporary scanners have made a "huge difference" and should be permanent

MP Rachel Gilmour (Lib Dem, Minehead & Tiverton) has called for a temporary CT scanner in Minehead to be made permanent.

In September last year, the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust announced it had installed MRI and CT scanners at Minehead Community Hospital while a new diagnostic centre is built in Bridgwater in a bid to cut waiting times.

The Bridgwater facility is due to be completed in the summer, and this week (January 19), MP Mrs Gilmour wrote to Minister for Care Stephen Kinnock to request a meeting to outline the benefits of making the CT scanner a permanent service.

She said since its installation, this service had provided “a new level of care in the West Somerset community” as part of the Government’s plans to invest in local NHS health services.

In her letter, Mrs Gilmour said the CT scanner had made a “huge difference” to local people, allowing for the early

diagnosis of chronic illnesses, “to improve patient outcomes and reduce pressure on acute services”.

The Minehead representative also mentioned how transport connectivity and a disproportionately elderly population mean that “a permanent installation would save time, money, and potentially lives”.

The current contract for both the CT and MRI scanners is set finish on March 26, but could be extended up until May. However, Mrs Gilmour has written to the Minister to press for a CT scanner to become a permanent service locally.

She said: “I am aware of how much Minehead Community Hospital and the local community have benefitted

from having a temporary CT scanner unit on site.

“West Somerset’s poor transport connectivity and large elderly population mean having these types of facilities locally is a game changer for making early diagnoses and improving patient outcomes.

“I look forward to hearing from the Minister to illustrate the benefits of making this CT scanner service permanent for the community here in and around Minehead.”

Announcing the scanners last September, a Somerset NHS spokesperson said the scanners would help “reduce waiting times” and make it easier for people to get "scans they need”.

“The new scanners are open five days a week and will provide around 4,000 scans to people in Minehead and nearby areas,” they added.

“This temporary new service will not only enable us to reduce waiting times, but also transfer diagnostic appointments away from our large hospitals and closer to patients’ homes, improving accessibility and supporting the NHS 10 year plan shift of acute to community care.”

Holiday resort bids for 160 new caravans

ASOMERSET holiday resort has applied for an opinion from planners on whether it could install up to 160 static caravans on a golf course.

Unity Beach Resort – Brean Leisure Park Ltd – has requested an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening Opinion for a change of use of part of the Brean Country Club course to that of a caravan park.

It would see the current site extended – and comes after a previous application to develop the golf course and install up to 85 static caravans to the south of this plot was withdrawn.

“The applicant is considering stationing around 150 to 160 static holiday caravans on the site, which would function as an extension to the existing operational holiday park,” the plans said. “Along with the stationing of caravans, the development would include ancillary infrastructure such as the creation of hardstanding bases, laying of service/utility corridors, vehicular roadways, car parking, pedestrian/cycle paths and landscaping.

“Access would be gained via

New pharmacy opens in town's high street

A NEW pharmacy has opened in Wincanton.

Medicine Clinic, at Wincanton Pharmacy, opened in the High Street on January 19.

It came after the closure of the previous pharmacy in 2024, with the new outlet run by owners Mitesh and Bvhani Patel, alongside operations manager Kris Hillary and manager, Jonathan Wood.

Somerset Councillors Tom Power and Lucy Trimnell (Con, Wincanton & Bruton) were on hand at the opening to check out the new pharmacy.

Cllr Power said: “I am delighted to be able to finally say that we have a pharmacy back on Wincanton High Street and the hard work and long process has been well worth the wait.

“My colleague Lucy Trimnell and I look forward to supporting Mitesh and the team in any way they need in the future.”

He added: “It was wonderful to see so many people coming in to the pharmacy to meet the team and see the services and products on offer.

“Everybody was commenting on how pleased they are to have a pharmacy back in the centre of the town and it seems as though this can only benefit the people and business in Wincanton.”

the existing holiday park, with a new roadway entering from the south-west corner of the proposed development site off Richard’s Way.”

An EIA is requested by developers ahead of a formal planning application, to

establish if further investigation of environmental impact is required, subject to planning rules.

How centre offers community support

"COMING here gives me friendly company."

Those were the words of John, a regular visitor to the Warm Welcome, held at the Crispin Community Centre, in Street, which opens daily offering tea, coffee and a hot meal, as well as a weekly exercise class for anyone who wants to take part.

John is one of a number of people who frequent the sessions, and said it helped him meet people.

"It’s a privilege that Street has this facility," he went on. "I have met new people here and now we go on day trips together. I really enjoy chatting to all the people that come in for coffee."

January 19 to 25 was Warm Welcome Week across the UK, celebrating initiatives that offer people somewhere to warm up and to get something to eat and

drink, as the UK continues to battle a cost-of-living crisis.

Michaela Edmunds, who runs Crispin Community Centre, said the space attracts people from the town and surrounding areas who are looking for community.

"We have a host of wonderful

volunteers who happily give their time to make food, drinks and make everyone feel welcome and valued," she said.

"The outcome is truly heart-warming, a room full of people chatting and enjoying something hot to eat or drink on a cold wet day, leaving brighter

than when they arrived means the world to everyone involved.

"Spaces like these enhance people’s physical and mental wellbeing during long, lonely winters."

Laura Bazley, who oversees Warm Welcome for Spark Somerset, added: "We believe everyone deserves to feel warm, welcomed and connectedespecially during the colder months.

"These spaces are about so much more than warmth; they’re about kindness, community and support.

"They help ensure no one has to feel isolated, providing a lifeline to many, and are often made possible thanks to dedicated volunteers."

What next for the Willow Man as report is revealed?

FOR over a decade, the Willow Man was an iconic landmark on the Somerset skyline - welcoming and bidding farewell to drivers as they passed on the M5.

Created by artist Serena de la Hey in 2000, the Willow Man made his home in a field south of junction 23, near Bridgwater.

He was commissioned by South West Arts as part of celebrations during the Year of the Artist and landowner, the Moate family, costing around £15,000.

The Willow Man was a celebration of the traditional Somerset craft of weaving and the role of the medium in the county's ecological and craft traditions.

He was initially intended to be in place for around three years but became a fixture of the landscape for drivers and residents alike, and his stay was extended several times.

Due to the elements - and the nature of willow - Ms de la Hey carried out several refreshers, remaking damaged parts and ensuring he looked good.

But as county authorities faced ever-growing financial constraints, the Willow Man fell into disrepair as he aged, eventually becoming a shadow of his former self.

Plans were periodically surfaced to 'right' the Willow Man, including in 2018, when Ms de la Hey was part of an unsuccessful fundraising to restore and maintain the sculpture, which had become an icon of Somerset.

And in 2023, Somerset Council received £35,000 from National Highways to produce a report on how the Willow Man might be repaired or enhanced using more robust materials, and relocated to a more suitable location.

However, after the completion of the report, residents were simply told the project would cost around £1 million - and was unfeasible in a challenging financial climate.

But what were the plans discussed? What did the report say?

Now, your Somerset Leveller has a copy of the previouslyconfidential report carried out in 2023, by WSP.

It details potential new locations for the Willow Man, as well as photographs of a potential new willow sculpture (WS) - instead made using metal.

Describing the Willow Man as an "emblem of Somerset regional identity and a notable landmark", the report details how the "plan is now to remove the existing sculpture and

potentially erect a new WS in a new location more suitable to the current landscape".

It went on: "The aim is that the sculpture would be constructed with more resilient materials to improve the expected longevity of the installation.

"A new site is also preferred, as the current site is now visually encroached by the built form of northern Bridgwater, progressed since the original WS's erection in 2000.

"The aim is to provide a more rural backdrop helping to maximise the visual impact of the new art installation."

But where did the report conclude a new sculpture should go?

Well, it identified a 'study area' for locations, east of the southbound M5 carriageway east of Bridgwater and south/ south west of the King Sedgemoor Drain.

The study area was made up of 15 fields, with six points of possible siting for the sculpture, which were analysed using criteria including

A 'potential design concept' detailed in the report Picture: WSP/Somerset Council

visibility from the road, access for maintenance etc, with a final recommended then selected.

This was in a field near Summerway Drove, on the opposite side of the motorway from East Bower, which had "a clear line of sight from the M5" and easy access from a nearby public right of way.

And what of the new sculpture itself?

The experts said the new sculpture - though no design was finalised - would be created using more long-lasting materials, such as Cor-Ten Steel, which was used in the construction of the Angel of the North, and would stand at a maximum height of 15.3 metres - around 3m higher than the original Willow Man.

for painting and provides a wood-like appearance, which mirrors the appearance of the original WS while providing a more robust construction."

Man been resurrected?

The simple answer is money. A number of reports in 2024 claimed the repair or reinstallation of the sculpture would cost around £1 million.

The report does not mention costs, but the fact is, no one has the necessary funding to bring him back.

But all is not lost.

A Somerset Council spokesperson said the authority would be willing to work with anyone who wanted to start work on reinstalling the beloved Willow Man.

attachment to the sculpture and the significant costs involved in repairing, recreating or relocating it – estimated at over £1 million.

"As outlined, the council must focus its limited resources on essential services, and we cannot justify committing public funds or staff time to take this project forward.

"Since the feasibility work was completed, no organisation has come forward with a viable, fully funded proposal to rebuild or re-imagine the Willow Man.

"After several years of exposure to weather, Cor-Ten Steel develops a rust-like appearance," the report said. "This both eliminates the need

Photographs of a 'concept design' were included, though it is not clear who or where it was made, which we have combined with AI to produce a visual representation of how the new sculpture may have looked. So why hasn't the Willow

"Somerset Council recognises the affection that people across the county have for the Willow Man, and that is why we helped secure external funding for detailed feasibility work," they said.

"Those studies confirmed both the public’s strong

"However, if a business, community organisation or consortium wished to take the lead, whether through sponsorship, fundraising or an alternative vision, we would be very happy to share the feasibility work and support them in exploring what might be possible."

Could the Willow Man make a comeback? We certainly hope so. And if you think could help - get in touch.

For he is much missed not only in Somerset but up and down the country.

Happy Valentine's history!

FEBRUARY 14 is approaching - and lovers everywhere brace for an annual spectacle of affection.

Supermarkets sprout heartshaped packaging overnight, florists work at double speed, and suddenly everyone has an opinion on whether Valentine’s Day is romantic, ridiculous, or best ignored altogether.

But where does this heartfilled day come from?

The day takes its name from St Valentine, or possibly several St Valentines, because history is rarely tidy. The most popular tale involves a Roman priest in the third century who lived under Emperor Claudius II. Claudius reportedly believed that unmarried men made better soldiers and therefore banned

marriage altogether. Valentine, clearly fond of romance, is said to have secretly married couples anyway, which led to his imprisonment and execution - traditionally dated to February 14. However, some historians believe the church may have deliberately placed St Valentine’s feast day around the same time as Lupercalia, an ancient Roman festival celebrating fertility.

By the Middle Ages, poets had linked Valentine’s Day with romance, while today's tradition took shape in the 18th and 19th centuries, with handwritten notes evolving into printed cards, followed by flowers, chocolates and inventive ways to say 'I love you', pause and show someone you care...

Charities bag lottery funding

SOMERSET charities are celebrating after being granted National Lottery funding.

The cash will be shared among the groups for the Bridges to Wellbeing project, which aims to address mental and physical health inequalities.

Charities Watch CIO, Open Doors Crewkerne, Ark at Egwood and Chard Community Hub will share the money over three years, providing five new positions across the four organisations.

Around 1,000 people each year are set to benefit from the scheme, which will provide a “varied range of activities and support”.

Chard-based Watch CIO, will lead the project and CEO, Julie Matthews, said: “I am particularly excited about having three other partners that all have skills in different areas and with whom we can collaborate closely with.”

“This will help beneficiaries in our community to help them connect back into society with work or volunteering,” she added.

“In addition, the aim is for us to collaborate closely with many other organisations. We really thank Amanda at Gillingham Grange in Chard for providing wonderful facilities for our meetings.”

Nigel Bell, CEO of Ark at Egwood, said: “The funding for Ark is all about building the partnerships and collaboration with local organisations that share the same ethos. It will enable us to support many people for years to come.”

Michael Fox, of Open Doors Crewkerne, said: “The funding for us for the first time means we can run a community space in Crewkerne that people can use. We want people to come and use our services. It’s amazing to be working with the other three partners and to work together across south Somerset.”

And Serena Wootton, CEO of Chard Community Hub, added: “Being part of this project will plug the gap we currently have. It’s an opportunity for us to focus on our beneficiaries and our volunteers that maybe do want to get back into the workplace or want to have a more active role volunteering; this is the piece of the puzzle that’s missing really.”

She went on: “There’s two part-time coordinator roles available, so they will be focussing particularly on Chard Community Hub, and we are looking at who in our set up might want to be involved.”

Somerset man charged alongside former councillor

A SOMERSET man has been charged with sexual offences alongside former Conservative councillor Philip Young –who has admitted nearly 50 offences of drugging, raping and sexually assaulting his former wife.

The offences occurred over a period of 14 years, and today (January 26) at Winchester Crown Court, 49-year-old Young pleaded guilty 11 counts of rape and 11 counts of administering a substance with intent to stupefy his former spouse Joanne, 48, who can be identified after she waived her right to anonymity.

A Swindon Borough Councillor for the Conservatives between 2007 and 2010,

Young, who lives in Enfield, also admitted 14 counts of voyeurism, including a single count that covered at least 200 acts of voyeurism; seven counts of assault by penetration; four counts of sexual assault and one count of publishing obscene articles on at least 500 occasions, all taking place between 2010 and 2024.

Appearing in court wearing a prisonissue grey sweater, Young denied three counts of making indecent images of children, one count of possession of prohibited images and four counts of possessing extreme pornographic images.

He appeared alongside five other men charged with offences against Mrs Young

– including 47-year-old Dean Hamilton, of Compton Dundon, near Street.

Hamilton is charged with assault by penetration, two counts of sexual assault and rape. He is yet to enter pleas.

Connor Sanderson-Doyle, 31, of Swindon, pleaded not guilty to sexual assault and assault by penetration; Norman Macksoni, 47, of Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, pleaded not guilty to rape and possessing an extreme pornographic image; Richard Wilkins, 61, of Toothill, Swindon, pleaded not guilty to assault by penetration and rape; and Mohammed Hassan, 37, of Swindon, pleaded not guilty to sexual assault.

Street dentist flushed with awards success

ASOMERSET dental practice is feeling flushed with success after being awarded ‘diamond’ status – for the state of its loos.

TRUSTDental, in Street, was recognised in the prestigious Loo of the Year Awards 2025, earning the highly-rated accolade for its washroom facilities – which puts it in the top 4% of thousands of toilets inspected across the UK.

The 2025 success came after TRUSTDental was awarded the Best Loo in the Healthcare Sector (UK) accolade, named Runner-Up for Washroom Technician of the Year (England), and handed the prestigious Chairman’s Trophy, recognising one of the very best loos in the UK.

For more than 35 years, Loo of the Year inspectors have travelled the UK assessing ‘away from home’ washrooms against 101 judging criteria, including accessibility, fixtures,

hygiene, and overall user experience.

Grades range from Bronze to Diamond, with TRUSTDental securing Diamond, the highest grade possible.

As part of the 2025 achievement, TRUSTDental was invited to the Loo of the Year Awards ceremony earlier this month.

Dr James Main, lead dentist,

owner, and principal of TRUSTDental, said: “We’re over the moon to receive Diamond status again this year. Roll on January, and here’s hoping we bring home another trophy for our loo.

“The dental practice loo is one of the most important rooms in a practice. It is often the first place patients go, and for those who feel anxious

TRUSTDental, in Street, has received a 'diamond' rating for its toilet facilities

about visiting the dentist, it’s the one space where they can catch their breath and feel more at ease. Sadly, while practices invest heavily in surgeries and waiting rooms, the loo is often overlooked. By winning the National Loo of the Year Award, we hope to raise awareness of how important this space is in helping patients feel comfortable and less anxious.”

TRAFFIC NOTICES (NORTH)

Somerset Council Parish of North Petherton

Temporary Closure of Tappers Lane

Somerset Council in exercise of its powers under Section 14 (1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, propose to make an Order prohibiting all traffic from proceeding along: Tappers Lane - from the junction with High Street to the junction with Hyde Park Avenue. Faded road markings causing drivers problems, research shows

ROAD markings are disappearing - according to more than a fifth of motorists.

New research by motoring group the RAC showed 21% of drivers believed most road markings in their area have faded away, while a further seven-in-10 (71%) state some have.

When asked whether they believe faded road markings are a recent problem, nearly three-quarters of those questioned (72%) said the issue has got worse in the last five years, with 92% believing it has made driving more dangerous.

The most frequently cited markings that have disappeared (50%) are the lines at the centre of carriageways separating lanes of traffic, including solid single, double and broken white lines.

Almost half of drivers (48%) said arrows on roundabouts or junctions have faded to grey, while 44% reported ‘give way’ markings have vanished.

Similar numbers said the paint on yellow box markings (43%), stop lines at junctions (41%) and speed limit signs painted on the road (36%) have gone.

Other markings that drivers

say have worn away to the detriment of road safety include areas of hatching (29%) (diagonal white lines separating lanes or protecting turning zones); bus or cycle lane markings (22%); zebra crossing stripes (24%); and cycle boxes/ advanced stop lines at traffic lights (17%).

Drivers said faded markings led to them having to guess where lanes are (63%), or ending up in the wrong lane (38%), while almost a fifth (19%) said they’ve had a confrontation or been beeped by another road user as a result of poor markings.

RAC head of policy, Simon Williams, said: "Drivers are

widely reporting that road markings have been left to fade into obscurity, making roads less safe as a result.

"The problem appears to have got progressively worse as a majority of drivers say the visibility of markings has deteriorated in the last five years.

"And, while all painted lines are important to ensure drivers do the right thing, the fact some, such as those dividing lanes and even stop lines are disappearing, is troubling.

"While the Government has just published the country’s first road safety strategy in more than a decade, this is one key area that shouldn’t be forgotten.

We urge them to work with councils to rectify this situation, as markings are painted onto the road for good reason: to keep drivers and other road users safe by clearly informing them of what they should and shouldn’t be doing.

"It’s frightening to think almost one-in-five of drivers have had a near-miss as a result of faded road markings and more than one-in-10 have overshot a junction. Leaving these most vital markings to just wear away makes no sense whatsoever.

"While there’s clearly a cost to maintaining them, the cost of letting them disappear doesn’t bear thinking about."

New Volvo EX60 'changes the EV game'

VOLVO has unveiled a new EX60 – which the firm says is 'changes the game' with a range of more than 500 miles on a single charge.

The new five-seater, all-electric SUV, is also said to be among the fastest-charging vehicles in the sector, with Volvo claiming a 10-minute charge will herald more than 200 miles on the road when using a 400kW fast charger.

"The new, all-electric EX60 changes the game in terms of range, charging and price

and represents a new beginning for Volvo Cars and our customers," said Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars.

"With this car, we remove all remaining obstacles for going electric. This fantastic new car is also a testament of what we are capable of at Volvo Cars, with an all-new product architecture introducing new key technologies – mega casting, cell-to-body and core computing."

A spokesperson went on: "In other words, the EX60 turns range anxiety into

range comfort and demonstrates that going electric is no longer a compromise.

"Design, engineering, hardware and software all work together to create a car that optimises driving range and matches many petrol cars."

The P10 AWD Electric version clocks in at a range of up to 410 miles, while a rear-wheel powered P6 Electric variant delivers up to 385-mile range, with all models boasting a 10-year battery warranty.

Have your say over roads which could be closed to traffic to help riders and cyclists

FIVE Somerset roads could be closed to traffic in a bid to improve access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

People are being urged to have their say over proposed locations for trials of Green Lanes – which see rural routes adapted to improve access to rural locations and the countryside.

The trials would see the routes closed as ‘through routes’ for motor vehicles.

Routes proposed for the trial are: Burcott Lane, Wells; Comeytrowe Road, Taunton; Neville’s Batch, Guerney Slade; Downend Road, Puriton; and Touches Lane, Chard.

Residents are being encouraged to give their thoughts on the plans as the council takes them forward.

“If progressed, any changes would be put in as a trial to enable residents and businesses to try it out, with further consultation to inform any decision on whether any trial should be made permanent,” a council spokesperson said.

“This would also inform the council’s ambition to consider any further locations in the future.”

Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “I would urge people to get involved, these locations provide a starting point for the council to explore simple interventions to try and make routes more attractive for local residents and people walking, cycling or horse riding – we want to hear people’s views so we can be as wellinformed as possible when it comes to taking the next steps.”

n Have your say on the Green Lanes plans for Somerset at somersetcouncil.citizenspace. com/highways/greenlanes.

Residents and businesses near the affected routes should receive a letter detailing the proposals, with councillors, city, town and parish councils all notified.

The Lucky Chance, a venue and rehearsal space in the former Portway Methodist Church, was founded by the Emma Rice Company after the theatre group bought the property in 2022.

After buying the building, pictured, the group aimed to power it sustainably, and got support from Frome Town Council (FTC).

"Frome Town Council supported them to achieve their vision for this historic building," an FTC spokesperson said.

Now fully operational, solar panels at The Lucky Chance are expected to generate around 11,000 kWh of electricity per year.

It means that on sunny days, they can produce more electricity than the building consumes, allowing the battery

Emma Rice, artistic director at The Emma Rice Company, said: "From the very beginning of the Lucky Chance project, we wanted to honour this remarkable space not just as a cultural venue, but as part of a sustainable future for Frome.

"Installing solar panels was an obvious choice — it aligns with our environmental values and dramatically reduces our energy costs. And our battery means the sun energy continues to power our wonderful Frome venue into the night.

"We’re particularly grateful to Frome Town Council for their vision and support in helping make renewable energy a reality for local organisations. Their leadership shows that even in conservation areas, renewable energy can play a key role in strengthening both our cultural and ecological wellbeing."

FTC renewable energy coordinator, Will Reynolds, added: "The Lucky Chance

Chris Martin doll - handmade in Somerset - toured with Coldplay and could be yours!

AONE-OF-A-KIND doll of Coldplay star Chris Martin - that travelled the world with the band having been made in Somerset - is being offered as a prize in a charity draw.

The toy, made by Shepton Mallet crafter Sandra Witcombe to celebrate the band’s Glastonbury 2024 headline performance, is being offered as the prize in a draw in aid of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Having been created in Somerset, the doll accompanied the chart-toppers on their world tour and has been signed by all four members. Now back home, it is helping raise cash for the air ambulance charity’s 2ndHeli Appeal.

"Unlike the 'nudiknit' figures that Sandra and her friends display in the Hive Café shop window in Shepton Mallet, this doll is different," a spokesperson said.

"It is fully dressed in one of Chris Martin’s stage outfits

which, including detail like lyrics on the trousers and the jewellery he wears.

"The doll’s story is almost as special as the item itself. After being picked up from the Hive Café, it travelled with Coldplay on their Music of the Spheres World Tour, sitting in the band’s dressing room, roaming

backstage, and even appearing on stage at the Olympiastadion in Munich."

All four members of the band - Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion - signed the doll’s T-shirt at Wembley Stadium this summer and returned the doll to Sandra, far exceeding her original hope of a signed photo.

Having read about Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance’s 2ndHeli Appeal, aimed at raising the final £1 million towards a second helicopter, she gifted the doll to the charity, hoping it would help raise funds for their latest campaign.

Coldplay fans and supporters of the air ambulance now have the chance to win the signed collectable by entering the Crowdfunder Prize Draw.

Tracy Bartram, communications manager at Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, said: "We are thrilled to launch our very first Crowdfunder Prize Draw and with such a fantastic item.

"Rather than auctioning the doll, which is raising funds in support of our 2ndHeli Appeal, we wanted anyone to have the chance of taking part, so for as little as £10, you can have an entry in the draw.

"For Coldplay fans, this is a truly special prize, and for everyone else who enters, it’s a chance to make a real difference for our life-saving cause."

n The Crowdfunder Prize Draw runs until Friday, February 27, with the draw taking place on March 3.

Cost of entries are:

• £10 for one entry

• £20 for two entries

• £50 for five entries

• £100 for 10 entries

Home & Garden

Starting a new vegetable patch...

AT this seemingly ‘dead’ time of year, while all spring is still asleep, gardeners’ thoughts are already turning to the new season. In the part of the garden designated for vegetables, the areas already treated by laying cardboard in autumn and early winter should soon be ready for an initial planting. A first row of early salads, initially sown and raised on a sunny windowsill, will be desperate for the space.

Traditionally, the first vegetables to be grown in new land are potatoes. These ‘clean’ the ground of weeds, mostly by turning over the soil, but also from the competition of all those spuds growing and using up the nutrients, making them unavailable to the weeds.

A row of ‘first early’ potatoes

should be ready to plant at the beginning of February, and harvested by the end of June, depending on the local weather conditions. It will be still early enough to sow a row of carrots to harvest in autumn. Yet it will be too late for the dreaded carrot root fly to be on the wing as they come up.

January is not too early to browse the catalogues for different potato varieties and decide whether or not to start with ‘first earlies’, ‘earlies’ or a maincrop variety. The earliest date for planting the ‘first earlies’ is late February to early March, depending on the weather. As soon as the weeds start growing, the soil has warmed up enough to get things moving. In theory, the soil temperature needs to be 10 degrees centigrade before growth can start.

In the meantime, ‘chit’ the potatoes. Place each one with three buds on top – rub out the other, lower green buds – in empty egg-box trays on a sunny, frost-free windowsill. The buds will start to push after a week or so when you could plant out each tuber in the warming soil, providing there are no frosts

about. Potatoes come from South America. They dislike frost.

Cover each tuber well with loose soil and label each row. And wait. Once the soil is warm enough, they will catch up with any that have been put out earlier. It’s as if they know that spring is just around the corner.

New hospital space opens for stoma patients Health & Wellbeing

STOMA patients in Yeovil can now receive their care in one place, after a new dedicated hospital space was opened.

Yeovil Hospital’s stoma care department previously shared clinic rooms with other specialties, making access difficult for those in need of treatment.

However, the team has now taken on a new department, in a unit on the former hospital car park, which they say is more suited to patients’ needs.

Hannah Ayling, a stoma care clinical nurse specialist at Yeovil Hospital, which is run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Moving into this new unit means we have a self-sufficient space for our patients, so we can provide care all in one place.

“The unit has a reception area, our nursing office, and stock room, as well as three dedicated clinic rooms that we

can use at one time – a huge improvement.

“We tend to run almost 650 outpatient clinics a year, with around 1,200 patients on our caseload, but we should now be able to see even more patients in our new environment with the additional clinic rooms available.

“Now that our clinic rooms are ventilated, we can offer irrigation services, and we will develop even more ways we can use the extra space.

“It will greatly benefit colleagues in the team too, as we can be more proactive and do more for our patients.

“Overall, it’s fantastic that

Live-in Care

patients now have their own space, which is more discreet if they experience any difficult issues.”

She said the new premises would help the team overcome challenges faced in recent years.

“With our nurses’ office based across the road from the main hospital in Convamore House, and our outpatient clinics and stock room back in the main hospital, it has been a bit of a challenge logistically when running clinics,” she said.

“Our previous clinic room was shared with our colorectal care colleagues, so if a stoma care patient rang us and they needed help quickly, we weren’t always able to see them, because we didn’t have a dedicated clinic room.

“While we’ve done our best to provide the best possible care for our patients, a few aspects have been difficult, such as our medical stock room held within our clinic room, which meant we’d have to constantly interrupt patient appointments if we needed stock.

“We also had no ventilation, so it very much felt like a cupboard with no windows –not ideal for stoma care.”

Yeovil Hospital’s stoma care team is made up of specialist nurses who provide expert care, education, and support for people with a stoma (like a colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy) before and after surgery, helping them manage pouch changes, skin care, diet, and emotional challenges.
