VALLEY STREET BUSHCARE

* FIRST AND THIRD TUESDAY 1–2 pm

The Leonard Wall/Valley Street Reserve and Providence Gully are habitat islands with a close connection to Knocklofty Reserve. The group is managing and replenishing wildlife habitat. These sites are not suitable for large groups. Inexperienced volunteers welcome.

Feb 3, 17* Roving weeding in Leonard Wall Reserve. Meet: Byard St/Mt Stuart Rd entrance, Mt Stuart.

FRIENDS OF KNOCKLOFTY BUSHCARE

* FIRST THURSDAY, 9–11.30 am THIRD THURSDAY, 9–11.30 pm

Transforming the city-fringed bushland of Knocklofty Reserve from a once-degraded state into a biologically diverse place.

Feb 5* Weeding gorse and other invasive weeds along the Glover Track, KR21 and KR20C. Meet: Poets Rd entrance to Knocklofty Reserve.

Feb 19

Follow-up agapanthus and red-hot poker control in the fire break.

Meet: Mt Stuart car park, West Hobart.

IMPORTANT

Please wear long sleeves, long trousers, a hat and covered shoes. Be aware some of our sites are steep and challenging – please read the descriptions to help you select a suitable activity.

WATERWORKS VALLEY LANDCARE

FIRST SUNDAY, 10 am – 12.30 pm

Restoring the urban fringe for people and wildlife, from the sides of the Waterworks Valley to the banks of Sandy Bay Rivulet.

Feb 1

Weeding foxglove upstream from Site 10, Waterworks Reserve.

Meet: Site 10 in Waterworks Reserve, or 9.45am at the gates if sharing a lift.

RIDGEWAY BUSHCARE

FIRST SUNDAY, 2–4.30 pm ALTERNATE MONTHS

Caring for the lovely open peppermint woodlands surrounding Ridgeway.

The next working bee will be in March.

FERN TREE BUSHCARE

SECOND SUNDAY

10 am – 12.30 pm

Controlling invasive weeds in the cool, shady forests of the lower foothills of Kunanyi/Mt Wellington.

Feb 8 Top of Browns Rd. Spanish heath, follow-up on foxglove and woody weed control.

Meet: Top of Browns Rd, Fern Tree. Park along Browns Rd.

HOBART RIVULET BUSHCARE

SECOND SUNDAY, 2–4.30 pm

Restoring the Hobart Rivulet and encouraging healthy habitat for our iconic platypus and other wildlife.

Feb 8 Creek banks on lower side of Wynyard St bridge. Maintain plantings. Weed small willow, blackberry, St John’s wort, blue periwinkle. Plant grasses and silver wattles.

Meet: Picnic table at Wynyard St, near the grassy area.

MOUNT NELSON BUSHCARE

Enhancing and protecting wildlife habitat in the diverse forests in and around Bicentennial Park.

Feb 8 Weed roving at Brinsmead Reserve “H”. Meet: At the eastern end of the reserve at the end of the right-of-way between 11 and 7 Olinda Grove, Mt Nelson.

FRIENDS OF McAULAY RESERVE BUSHCARE

SECOND SUNDAY, 2–4.30 pm

Restoring the white gum woodlands of Maning Rivulet in Edith Reserve and the historic McAulay Reserve.

Feb 8 Follow-up weed control in Edith Reserve along Maning Creek.

Meet: Near 268 Churchill Ave, Sandy Bay.

SOUTH HOBART BUSHCARE

THIRD SUNDAY 10 am – 12.30 pm

Looking after a bushland remnant nestled in the middle of South Hobart by removing weeds and protecting the habitat of eastern barred bandicoots.

Feb 15 Mulching, weeding and erosion control using stakes and logs.

Meet: Near 109 Wentworth St, end of the road.

LENAH VALLEY BUSHCARE

THIRD SUNDAY 2–4.30 pm

Caring for the New Town Rivulet and surrounding reserves of Lenah Valley.

Feb 15 Weeding the ferny creek banks of Haldane Reserve, especially removing blackberry, thistles and hemlock.

Meet: RSL car park, 188 Lenah Valley Rd.

BUSHCARE WORKING BEES

CRAG CARE

10 am – 1 pm

Crag Care’s mission is to mitigate the environmental impacts of climbing and in doing so help preserve the places and lifestyle they love.

Feb 14 Crag Care members are invited to join Bushcare friends and family for the annual Clean Up Kunanyi event on Saturday 14 February. If cancelled because of poor weather the event will be rescheduled to Saturday 21 February.

Meet: Summit viewing shelter below the Pinnacle car park, Kunanyi/Mt Wellington. Look for the Bushcare banner.

CORNELIAN BAY / QUEENS DOMAIN BUSHCARE

FOURTH SUNDAY 10 am – 12.30 pm

Protecting Hobart’s rare grassy woodlands on the Queens Domain and picturesque Cornelian Bay area.

Feb 22 Weed and she-oak roving amongst the grasslands.

Meet: Turn-around platform 1km walk from the roundabout Infinity Loop picnic table, Queens Domain. Look for the Bushcare sign.

LAMBERT GULLY BUSHCARE

FOURTH SUNDAY, 2–4.30 pm

Convenor: Ingrid Colman

Working along the slopes of the Lambert Rivulet waterway under giant blue gums to maintain the habitat corridor of Lambert Gully.

Feb 22 On-going blue periwinkle control on Lambert Rivulet. Easy work. Gum boots recommended.

Meet: End of Lambert Ave, Lambert Park, Sandy Bay.

FRIENDS OF WELLINGTON PARK

FIRST FRIDAY, ALTERNATE MONTHS 9.15 am – 1 pm

Working all over Kunanyi / Mt Wellington to protect the mountain’s natural values by combining a bushwalk with a weeding expedition.

Feb 13 Foxglove and old-growth gorse below the Main Fire Trail.

Our Bushcare groups are run by volunteers working with the City of Hobart to help care for their local bushland reserves. During Bushcare events children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Bushcare is cancelled on days of total fire ban, high winds or heavy rain.

PLEASE BRING: Strong boots, warm waterproof clothing, a hat and a drink. Gloves and all tools will be supplied.
