Marion Drummondâs earliest memories are rooted in the vivid colours of old storybooks...
She recalls how the illustrations in Hans Christian Andersen stories, wonderfully brought to life by Margaret W. Tarrant, left a lasting impression on her. Likewise, the detailed illustrations by G.F. Tunnicliffe, especially in the âLadybird What to Look Forâ series, made a deep impact, with images of âthin pale yellow skies of a frozen winter or black-headed gulls and tractors in spring fieldsâ sparking her connection with nature.
Additionally she is inspired by a broad range of painters-
âMy greatest influences in painting are varied from Rubens to Jenny Saville and I am very much inspired by all great drawing and painting.
I would probably describe myself as a representational/romantic artist and my focus is on light. Subject matter is always real and studied; number of petals of any flower observed and changes from life, still life to landscape . . . When painting life I am looking for mood and presence and for the skin to breathe. With still life the colours are all there so I am looking for light.â
For Marion, the visual world has always been the most captivating aspect of life. Her lifelong passion for wildlife and the natural world is reflected in her art. She strives to capture the essence of light, mood, and movement in her paintings, often employing unconventional methods.
âI paint using fingers and rags, a technique I developed while working from the figure. The necessity for speed in capturing the moment has meant mixing the paint directly onto the gessoed board and working, almost sculpting, and wrestling out, ideally in one sitting, to keep things fresh.â
While photographs are occasionally used for reference, this method of sculpting paint allows her to achieve the clean, vibrant colours she desires, reminiscent of the palette knife technique she once favoured but no longer uses as fingers and rags give a softer, more natural line to stil life and figurative work. Marionâs passion extends to painting the fresh flowers she grows in her garden, which she has carefully cultivated with her favourite plants. As an artist, she is continually driven by her pursuit of perfection, always seeking movement and chasing light.
A true country girl at heart, her life revolves around painting, gardening, cooking, and walking her dogs. These activities, grounded in nature, inspire and enrich her artistic journey to make her the painter she is today...

Born in Glasgow in 1958, Marion has a deep connection to the Blane Valley countryside, where the ever-changing light, wildlife and landscapes provide endless inspiration for her work. A professional artist for over thirty years and learning her craft under distinguished teachers such as Christine Ironside, Drummond Mayo and Ann Johnston, Marionâs work is widely collected and held in distinguished collections across the UK and abroad. She exhibits in select galleries throughout Scotland and London.
