Nael Hanna is widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading contemporary landscape painters. Born in Northern Iraq in 1959, he was awarded a scholarship and moved to Scotland in the 1980s to study at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, where he developed a distinctive artistic voice, combining a profound appreciation for nature with a vibrant, expressive approach to painting.
Nael’s work is instantly recognisable for its textured, sculptural surfaces and dynamic brushwork, capturing movement, atmosphere, and emotion in every piece. He is particularly inspired by Scotland’s dramatic East coast, near his home, with its rugged cliffs, fishing villages, and everchanging light. Translating the rhythm and power of the landscape into near-abstract compositions, his work feels both intimate and expansive, drawing on influences from Turner, Willem de Kooning, Marc Chagall, and Joan Eardley while remaining entirely his own.
Alongside his landscapes and seascapes, Nael paints flowers directly from life, often gathered from the fields and hedgerows surrounding his home, producing luminous works that pulse with colour, vitality, and energy. More recently, he has explored increasingly abstract compositions, always maintaining his distinctive, expressive style.
This new solo exhibition, here at Strathearn Gallery, Rising Tide, marks a milestone in the gallery’s long-standing relationship with the artist. For the first time, the gallery presents a major exhibition of Nael Hanna’s work, bringing together a compelling selection of recent paintings alongside his lessseen, large-scale pieces.
Dynamic coastal scenes, energetic seascapes, and intimate floral studies offer an immersive experience of Nael’s vision, capturing the drama, movement, and beauty of the Scottish landscape and coastline in all its intensity. The exhibition underscores both the breadth of the artist’s practice and Strathearn Gallery’s commitment to presenting the work of one of Scotland’s most significant contemporary painters.
