Stop The Guesswork
If you have ever had a dog with allergies, you will know it is a mix of love, frustration, and detective work. My dog Vinny, a standard poodle cross springer spaniel, is the sweetest little city boy you will ever meet. He is also a walking bundle of sensitivities.
Since he was eight weeks old, we have battled a series of ear infections, rashes, and endless food experiments. One week chicken is fine, the next it is chaos. Grass gives him a tummy rash, certain treats make his ears flare up, and sometimes he just refuses food altogether. His relationship with eating is complicated. We have tried it all: vet-prescribed diets, supplements, prescription shampoo, steroid creams, medicated cleansers, rounds of medication, even the “it must be the bowl” theory. While some things helped, nothing really solved it. That is why I was so excited to try the Paw Print Complete Intolerance Screening. It uses a simple hair sample

from your dog’s brush to test for over 470 possible food and environmental triggers.
I sent Vinny’s fur sample off this morning, and I cannot wait for the results. Even my vet recommended doing a test like this. The idea that I might finally get some clarity, to actually know what has been bothering him instead of guessing, feels like a huge relief.

Vinny is currently on a raw diet of chicken and fish, with grain-free salmon biscuits to balance things out. It has been a long road of trial and error, but I am hopeful that this test might finally give us a bit of peace and maybe fewer vet bills. Because when your dog is uncomfortable, you feel it too. You notice every scratch, every lick, every look that
says, “something is not right.” So here is to finding answers, one fur strand at a time. If your pup has unexplained tummy issues, itchy paws, or mysterious flareups, it is worth looking into a test like this. It might just be the key to helping them feel better and giving you both a calmer, happier life.

Using a simple fur sample from your dog’s brush, our lab screens for 470 food and environmental triggers, from proteins, grains and vegetables, to pollen, mould and dust mites.

Move Over, Gym Buddy
Why Your Dog Might Be the Best Fitness Partner You’ll Ever Have
If your gym shoes are gathering dust, your dog might be the motivation you need. Studies show that dog owners are more active, happier, and even sleep better than those without pets. It turns out our furry friends aren’t just companions; they’re personal trainers with paws.
Dogs love routine. Rain or shine, they’re ready for their daily walk, tail wagging at the door long before you’ve found your keys. That enthusiasm is contagious. Even on days when the couch looks tempting, a pair of hopeful eyes can be enough to get you moving. Unlike human workout partners, dogs never cancel or complain. A brisk 30-minute walk can burn calories for you and keep your dog’s heart healthy too. Add a few sprints, fetch sessions, or hill climbs, and you’ve got a solid workout that doesn’t feel like one. Local dog-walking
groups and “pup runs” are popular (check your community facebook page for groups), turning exercise into a social outing rather than a chore. Walking also provides mental exercise for dogs. New smells, sights, and social encounters stimulate their brains as much as their bodies, reducing boredom and unwanted behaviours at home.
If you like variety try agility courses. Some owners are also getting into paddleboarding with their dogs or joining canine fitness classes that mix strength, cardio, and obedience. It is exercise disguised as playtime and a great way to bond. For those who prefer a slower pace, even gentle strolls around the block count. What matters most is consistency and shared enjoyment.
Active dogs need balanced nutrition. High-quality protein, healthy fats, and
joint-support ingredients such as omega oils or glucosamine help them recover and stay strong. Just like people, dogs perform better when their diet matches their activity level. Always provide water during walks and check with your vet if you are increasing your dog’s exercise routine.
If you or your dog are new to regular activity, start small. Build up distance gradually and avoid extreme temperatures and particularly the heat of the day over summer. Over time, you will both notice better stamina, mood, and sleep quality and that's for you both! The best part is that you are not just walking a dog; you are walking a friend who wants nothing more than to spend time with you. Every step together is an investment in health, happiness, and connection. No gym membership required.

From Small to All Dogs Subwoofer’s Holiday Expansion
Subwoofer, the New Zealand design brand for dogs that launched just one year ago, has grown up. What began as a boutique brand for little dogs has evolved into a design-driven lifestyle label for all dogs from Chihuahuas to, well, Great Danes..
This holiday season, Subwoofer unveils a big expansion: its signature collars are now available in sizes XS to XL, joined by larger elevated bowls. All crafted with the same uncompromising attention to design, materials, and durability that defined Subwoofer’s early success.
“Subwoofer started with a mission to make beautifully designed, long-lasting gear for small dogs because nothing like that existed at the time,” says Lisa Mason, the founder of Subwoofer.
Subwoofer’s journey began when Lisa struggled to find a brand for her beloved Cavoodle Monkey. With a background in fashion and a passion for quality, she created Subwoofer to fill the gap.
“We started with small dogs - they were our first love. We didn’t plan to go bigger, but the demand was impossible to ignore. Every week, customers were asking, ‘Where are the bigger sizes?’ and ‘My dog won’t fit that!’ After being dead-set on staying small, we’ve listened and now we’re proud to say Subwoofer is for all dogs.”
The move marks a milestone for the homegrown label, which has quickly gained a cult following among designconscious dog owners who value quality, craftsmanship, and timeless style.
WHAT’S NEW THIS CHRISTMAS
• Large Collars: Now available for bigger breeds, featuring marine-grade webbing, solid brass hardware, and Subwoofer’s signature five-year guarantee.
• Tiny Collars & Leads: Now available for teacups, these are specially designed half the weight of the small collars and leads for dogs with dainty necks and little legs such as Chihuahuas, Yorkshire Terriers and Miniature Dachshunds.
• Larger Elevated Bowls: The new duo is landing just before Christmas, this new design doubles the size of the original, perfect for breeds from French Bulldogs to Golden Retrievers.

Each product stays true to Subwoofer’s design ethos: quality materials, refined craftsmanship, and minimalist aesthetics that look as good in a modern home as they do on your daily walk.
“We create products for people who care about good design, the kind of people who buy once, buy well,” says Lisa. “Every Subwoofer piece is built to last. Our bowls and collars come with a five-year guarantee because we believe beautiful things, even for dogs, shouldn’t be disposable.”
With its marine-grade materials and solid brass fittings, the Subwoofer range
continues to blur the line between lifestyle design and pet accessories. “There’s still nothing else like it in the Australasian market, design-led, thoughtfully made, and crafted to stand the test of time.”
Proudly New Zealand designed, Subwoofer works with a network of local makers and a handful of specialist producers offshore to meet its exacting standards. “We’re proving that pet accessories can be functional, sustainable, and beautiful,” says founder Lisa Mason. “Every detail from the silent hardware to the kitchen-worthy bowls, is considered from a design point of view.”

Lenny
A little bit of everything

Border Collie X
A Border Collie cross with brains to spare, Zeus is always on the lookout for a task. He hates sitting still; if he isn’t chasing a ball, he’s herding the others as if they’re wayward sheep. A long run across open fields is his idea of heaven, and when he gets going, his energy seems endless. Zeus brings the brains and brawn to the crew, and if there’s a problem to solve, he’s the first one to figure it out.
Once a stray who learned the hard rules of the street, Lenny has now found warmth and love in a new home. Still, a little of his old grit lingers, he walks with a swagger, knows how to defend himself, and doesn’t back down easily. His tough-guy edge hides a loyal heart, and he’s fiercely protective of his people. The pack respects him; he’s proof that second chances make the best stories.

Sookie
Miniature English Bull Terrier
Wire-Haired Fox Terrier

Mia has lightning speed and a cheeky sparkle in her eye, Mia is pure mischief on four legs. Everyone loves her, and she loves everyone right back, darting from one friend to the next with endless energy. She’s fast, playful, and impossible to catch when she decides the game is on. Just don’t leave the gate open, Mia will be halfway down the street on her next grand adventure before you’ve even noticed.
Sookie may be small, but she’s a mighty powerhouse of energy. She loves nothing more than a big walk, but her true passion is road trips, pick up the car keys, and she’ll already be waiting at the car before you can blink. Harnessed in the back seat, ears up and eyes bright, Sookie is in her element on the open road. Mealtimes are another highlight, and her excitement is so loud and joyful that the whole neighbourhood knows it’s dinner time: no allergies, no fuss, just pure enthusiasm. Sookie is the pack’s little rocket.

Lost Pet? It Takes a Village
Few things are more distressing than discovering that a beloved pet has gone missing or, worse, been stolen. Panic sets in, the mind races, and the hours feel unbearably long.
But in the middle of the chaos, there are clear steps that can make all the difference in bringing an animal home safely.
These practical tips, gathered from pet owners who’ve successfully reunited with their companions, show that persistence and community support can turn heartbreak into hope.
REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY
The first and most crucial step is to report the loss or theft to the police. Even if it feels like a long shot, having an official record matters. Always get a file number, as you’ll need it for reference when contacting other agencies.
If your pet is suspected of being stolen, ask officers which private investigator they would personally recommend. A good investigator can trace leads, access surveillance footage, and follow trails that might otherwise go cold.
Some specialise in lost or stolen pets and have the networks and experience to act quickly, and they know which doors to knock on and which phone calls to make.
Hiring a private investigator may come with a cost, but when a furry member is missing, it’s often money well spent.
THINK LIKE YOUR PET
Begin by thoroughly searching the area where your pet went missing. For dogs, it can help to leave a scent trail using pieces of unwashed clothing so they can follow the familiar smell back home.
Put up flyers everywhere, from shop windows and lamp posts to letterboxes and community boards. Include a clear photo, identifying details, and a reachable contact number. The goal is simple: make your pet’s face known to as many people as possible.
USE EVERY CONNECTION
In a digital age, visibility is everything. Share your pet’s details on local community pages, lost pet groups, and social media networks. Tag friends, neighbours, and local businesses.
Don’t stop there, reach out to people
who are always on the move, such as couriers and postal workers, lawn-mowing and maintenance services, as well as taxi and rideshare drivers. They’re often out and about in neighbourhoods and can be valuable eyes on the ground.
CONTACT THE RIGHT ORGANISATIONS
Keep a checklist and call regularly. It’s essential to contact animal control, local councils, SPCA, veterinary clinics, animal transport companies, schools and local radio stations and ask if they can share a notice in newsletters or community updates, as well as pet advocacy organisations such as Paws4Justice, who can help raise awareness online. If your pet is microchipped, report it as stolen or missing with your chip provider so the alert appears in the national database.
POST A REWARD
Offering a reward can motivate people to keep an eye out, but it’s essential to handle it carefully. Be specific about the amount and how to claim it.
For example: “Reward for safe return. Drop by your local vet and ask them to send a photo confirmation. Payment will be transferred immediately; no questions, no police involvement.”
The easier you make it for someone to return your pet, the higher the chance they will do the right thing. Avoid vague or complicated instructions; keep it simple, safe, and fast.
STAY ALERT, STAY HOPEFUL
Keep track of all leads and follow up on every tip, no matter how small it seems. Persistence pays off. Many owners have found that the key is consistency: checking cameras, revisiting the area, and staying visible in the community.
Above all, don’t lose hope. Pets are remarkably resilient, and many have been reunited after days, weeks, or even months apart. With enough persistence, organisation, and compassion from others, lost pets do find their way home.

7 Top Tips If Your Pet Goes Missing
1. CHECK YOUR DETAILS
Check that your contact information is current on both the microchip register and your local council’s dog registration database. Vets, SPCA, and councils will use these records to reach you if your pet is found.
2. SEARCH YOUR PROPERTY FIRST
Look everywhere your pet could hide: under decks, in sheds, behind furniture, and under bushes. Frightened or injured animals often stay silent and hidden for days, even when nearby.
3. TELL YOUR NEIGHBOURS
Knock on doors and share a photo or flyer. Ask neighbours to check garages, sheds, and gardens. A friendly chat can often uncover helpful sightings.
4. USE LOST/FOUND ANIMAL REGISTERS
List your pet as ‘lost’ and check the ‘found’ listings on lost/found pet sites.
5. SPREAD THE WORD
Create a flyer with a clear photo, brief description, and more than one contact number. Post it on local notice boards, vet clinics, supermarkets, and community centres.
6. GO ONLINE
Share your post on local Facebook community pages, and ask friends to share it too. Check Trade Me’s Lost & Found section and your local council’s impound listings.
7. KEEP LOOKING AND DON’T GIVE UP
Pets, especially cats, can disappear for days or even weeks before returning home. Go for quiet walks at night, call their name, and use familiar sounds like treat bags or whistles. Persistence pays off.

Bringing your new kitten home

Spring has sprung – and what better time of year to think about bringing a new rescue kitten into your home from SPCA. SPCA’s Scientific Officer Dr Alison Vaughan has a few tips on what to do when inviting a new kitten into your home.
THE JOURNEY HOME:
Getting a new kitten is exciting but it’s important to remember not open the cat carrier on the journey home or try to play with them in the car. They may be scared and unpredictable and may also try to escape. It is safer to wait until you are inside the house before opening the cat carrier.
ESSENTIAL INFORMATION ONCE ARRIVING HOME
1. Set up one room for your new kitten:
• This helps them feel safe and lets them get settled before introducing the rest of the house and any other pets. It is also easier for toilet training and cleaning.
• Ensure the room is quiet, secure, a comfortable temperature and wellventilated.
• Make the room ‘cat comfy’
2. Set up the room with water, food, toys, litter tray, scratching post and
somewhere for them to hide.
• Cats like to be high up. Include some shelves or a cat tower so they feel safe.
• Cats prefer to drink water when it is away from their food dish. Avoid the use of combined food and water bowls.
• Provide a bed or comfy blanket.
3. Litter trays
• Put the litter tray at least 1.5m away from food, water and bedding.
• Cats have sensitive noses – use unscented litter and clean the litter tray daily.
4. Cat proofing
• Remove any dangerous wires, curtain cords, or items your kitten could chew or get tangled in.
• Remove any sharp or potentially dangerous items.
• Remove anything breakable, or items that you do not want scratched!
• If the room has a toilet in it, keep the toilet lid closed.

5. Keep calm to help them settle in
• Ask anyone in the house to try to keep quiet to avoid scaring your new kitten.
• Avoid introducing them on hectic days such as Christmas or a birthday.
• Do not worry if your kitten hides for a few days; this is quite normal behaviour.
6. Let them explore the house slowly
• After 2-3 days in one room, slowly introduce your kitten to the rest of the house.
• If you have other pets, you may need to contain them while your new kitten is exploring. SPCA has advice for introducing pets on our website.

The most important time for socialising a kitten is between 3-9 weeks of age but it’s still important to socialise them past this age. Kittens benefit from positive experiences with family members, other pets, visitors, grooming, veterinary visits,
travel in cars, using the cat carrier, and other life experiences. SPCA has a helpful socialisation checklist on our website.
APPROPRIATE PLAY
Kittens often bite due to playfulness. While cute when they are little, this can be a problem once they are bigger. To avoid this, follow these tips:
• Avoid using your hands for playing. If your kitten grabs your hand, swap for an appropriate toy.
• Wand toys are great for playing while keeping your hands out of reach!
• Never punish your kitten for biting or scratching. Playful kittens may interpret the reaction as a game, while fearful kittens may think they are being attacked and bite harder.
KEEPING YOUR KITTEN SAFE AND HAPPY AT HOME
‘Stay at home’ cats enjoy longer, healthier
lives than cats who are allowed to roam. Most kittens adapt well if started at an early age. Keeping your cat at home doesn’t have to mean keeping them inside. Consider building a “catio” or cat-proofing your fences to provide your cat with the choice to go outdoors while keeping them safe. Kittens can also be trained to accept a harness. We have a handy guide on our website.

Life with Piggies: Cavy Care 101
Guinea pigs are wonderful companions: gentle, curious, and capable of forming strong bonds with their humans. But they deserve a thoughtful, caring, prepared guardian.
Auckland Cavy Care’s “Considering Adopting?” advice helps ensure that the decision to purchase or ideally adopt is not based on impulse, but on readiness for the animals’ sake and yours.
Bringing a guinea pig (or “cavy”) into your life is a delightful choice. These small mammals are sociable, gentle, and full of personality. But like any pet, they come with responsibilities. Auckland Cavy Care reminds prospective adopters: before your heart says yes, your head and your home should also be ready.
Here are the main things to consider to ensure you and your future pig are a great match.
“ROOM IN YOUR HEART” VS “ROOM IN YOUR WALLET”
It is easy to fall in love with the idea of a cute little guinea pig, but the financial reality should not be overlooked. There are upfront costs, including the adoption fee, a suitable cage with bedding and liners, hides, tunnels, bottles, dishes, and a carry cage, along with the first supply of hay, pellets, and fresh food.
Once your pet is home, the ongoing costs soon become clear. Daily fresh food, high-quality hay, pellets, laundry for fleece bedding, and replacement of worn-out items all add up.
Even though cavies are small, their needs are continuous, so it pays to budget wisely to avoid compromising care later.
CHECK YOUR LIVING SITUATION
Adoption plans can hit a surprise hurdle if you overlook your housing rules. Many people have had to make sudden decisions when a landlord, roommate or family member says “No pets allowed.” That is a heartbreaking situation for a cavy. Remember: these animals need secure housing, space to move, and a stable environment, not just a corner of the room.

TIME, COMPANIONSHIP & ATTENTION
Though guinea pigs do not need walkies like a dog, they definitely need time, interaction, and companionship.
Guinea pigs are social animals. A solitary cavy may get bored, lonely, or depressed. You will need to spend regular time with them through gentle handling, supervised floor time, and mental enrichment. They will not look after themselves. Although maintenance may be less intensive than for some pets, consistency is key.
If your schedule is hectic or you travel frequently, consider your commitments carefully.
ACCESS TO SPECIALISED CARE
Not all vets are equipped or experienced with guinea pigs. As exotic pets, cavies often require specialised knowledge and tools.
Owners should monitor their pet's dental health, weight, coat, and behaviour, watching closely for any signs of illness. Auckland Cavy Care also encourages responsible spaying or neutering and proper group housing, whether same-sex pairs or neutered combinations, to ensure harmony and well-being.
RESCUE, DON’T BUY!
Auckland Cavy Care strongly recommends adopting from shelters or rescue organisations over purchasing from pet shops or breeders. Rescue guinea pigs are health-checked, socialised and prepared for life in a new home.
Adoption also reduces demand for poor breeding practices and gives unwanted animals a much-needed second chance. With the charity’s support, adopters are guided to ensure their pets are wellmatched and make a smooth transition into their new environment.
The final question is whether adoption fits your life. Can you afford both the initial set-up and the ongoing costs?
Does your housing allow pets, and have you checked with those you live with? Do you have the time to interact with and enrich your guinea pigs daily? Is there a competent small animal veterinarian nearby? Are you committed to caring for them in the long term?
If your answer is yes, you’re well on your way to adoption readiness. If not, take the time to prepare properly.
Fostering is a valuable way to gain first-hand experience with guinea pig care before committing fully. Auckland Cavy Care offers short-term fostering opportunities that let you learn about their needs, routines, and personalities, helping you decide whether long-term adoption is right for you.

Coops & Clucks
Bringing chickens into your backyard is rewarding, hilarious, and occasionally a little messy.
But before you take the plunge, there are a few essentials every would-be poultry parent should know. Chickens can bring joy, fresh eggs, and a touch of rural charm to any home, but they also require daily care, a little planning, and a lot of love.
IT’S A COMMITMENT
Backyard hens can live five to eight years on average, some even longer. They’re not a weekend project; they’re long-term companions that require daily care and a reliable routine.
Feeding, watering, cleaning, and checking for health issues become part of everyday life, but the rewards are endless, from the first morning cluck to the satisfaction of collecting warm, freshly laid eggs.
EGGSPECTATIONS
Your hens will lay for their first two years, then naturally slow down. Some owners keep their “retired” hens as pets; others make tougher choices. Decide early what approach feels right for you.
Don’t panic if egg production drops in winter; shorter days affect their laying cycle. It’s completely normal. Use the downtime to enjoy their company and maybe stockpile a few extra eggs in autumn.
THE GREAT STORM
When your coop suddenly looks like it survived a pillow fight, it’s just moulting season. Chickens shed old feathers for new ones, messy but harmless.
And while they may create a bit of chaos, chickens are also nature’s composters. Each hen produces rich, nutrient-filled manure that can transform your garden soil. Just remember to check your shoes before heading indoors!
SUMMER CARE
Summer sunshine might be lovely for us, but for chickens, hot weather can be a challenge.
Shade is essential. If you’re feeling the heat, your chooks are feeling it more under all those feathers! Make sure they have access to trees, shrubs, tarps, or even a wellplaced umbrella. Chickens will instinctively seek out cooler spots if given the option.
Hydration is equally essential; always provide multiple sources of cool, clean water around the run. Consider placing shallow trays of water for them to dip their feet in for a very own backyard spa day.
Hot days are also a great excuse for frozen treats. Your hens will love icy snacks like peas, watermelon chunks, berries, or corn. It’s fun, hydrating, and enriches their routine.
Keep the coop cool, too; good airflow is key. Open windows or add vents covered with wire mesh, avoid deep bedding that traps heat, and consider a small fan (safely positioned) to circulate air.
Caring for chickens, in any season, is all about observation, patience, and a bit of creativity. Even with great care, chickens sometimes fall ill or stop laying. Don’t be discouraged.
Before long, your flock will feel like family - one egg, one laugh, and one cluck at a time.
ASK THE EGGSPERTS

Dining with the Flock
Chickens might not be picky, but what you feed them makes a big difference to their health, happiness, and egg quality. A well-balanced diet keeps them active, healthy, and laying nutritious eggs year-round.
START WITH THE BASICS
The foundation of every good chicken diet is a high-quality commercial layer feed. This is specially formulated to deliver the right balance of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals, everything a laying hen needs to produce strong shells and rich yolks. Think of it as the main course for your flock.
ADD A DASH OF NATURE
Chickens are natural foragers. Give them time outdoors and they’ll happily scratch around for bugs, worms, and slugs, which provide a healthy boost of natural protein. Watching them roam and peck is not only entertaining but it’s also great for their well-being.
HEALTHY EXTRAS
Alongside their feed, you can supplement with whole grains like corn, wheat, or barley. Cooked beans and seeds are also nutritious additions, but always make sure beans are cooked first, as raw beans can be toxic to chickens.
FRESH FRUITS AND VEGGIES
Just like us, chickens benefit from fresh produce. Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are packed with vitamins, while carrots, broccoli, pumpkin, and cucumbers add variety and texture. Fruits should be given sparingly, but watermelon, strawberries, and blueberries are crowd-pleasers on a warm day. Even cooked veggies like peas, potatoes, and corn are suitable in moderation.

TREATS AND WHAT TO AVOID
Your flock won’t say no to the occasional treat. A handful of stale bread, rice, or pasta can make them happy, and dried mealworms are always a favourite. Just remember: moderation is key. Skip the salty, sugary, or processed scraps, and steer clear of avocado, chocolate, and raw beans, which can be harmful.
DON’T FORGET THE GRIT
Because chickens don’t have teeth, they rely on grit to help grind food in their gizzard and aid digestion. Make sure they always have access to it, especially if they’re eating anything other than commercial feed.
With a balanced diet and a bit of foraging freedom, your chickens will thrive and thank you with plenty of fresh, delicious eggs.

Chickens aren’t fussy eaters, but they do best on a balanced diet that keeps them healthy and laying strong, nutritious eggs.
The foundation of any chicken’s diet should be a high-quality commercial layer feed, which provides the right mix of protein, calcium, and other nutrients essential for egg production.
Alongside their feed, chickens love to forage, scratching around for bugs, worms, and slugs. These tasty finds give them a natural source of protein.
You can also offer grains like corn, wheat, and barley as a supplement, and cooked beans and seeds are a great addition (just make sure beans are cooked before feeding).
Fresh produce is another favourite. Chickens enjoy leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and Swiss chard, as well as vegetables like carrots, broccoli, pumpkin,
and cucumbers. Fruits can be given in small amounts. Watermelon, strawberries, and blueberries are always a hit.
Even cooked vegetables like peas, potatoes, and corn are fine in moderation. For a little extra treat, your flock will happily peck at stale bread, rice, or pasta, and they’ll go wild for dried mealworms. Just be mindful of what scraps you give them; avoid processed or salty foods, as well as anything containing avocado or raw beans.
Finally, don’t forget grit. Because chickens don’t have teeth, grit helps them grind up their food in their gizzard, aiding digestion.
In short: start with quality layer feed, supplement with grains and fresh foods, and keep treats moderate. With the right mix, your chickens will thrive and reward you with plenty of fresh eggs.
