Ensuring Success
The exams you sit in Year 11 will matter to you. They will decide whether you get to study the A Levels, vocational courses or apprenticeship you have applied for. They will open numerous opportunities for you even beyond college/6th Form.
To assist you in your exam preparations your teachers have put together a plan to show you what they recommend you study, in the lead up to your first exam in each subject.
Research shows that those students who create a clear vision, plan their revision schedule well and have well organised notes are those who exceed their predictions. All students should have started a personalised revision schedule. Some tips for ensuring success:
•Get to school on time, every day.
•Have a positive mind-set and don't be afraid to deal with difficulties.
•Ensure all assessments are complete and up to standard.
•Create a visual revision timetable, you may also prefer to use an app which you can personalise, and it alerts you to study, such as SQA my study plan.
•Make a realistic timetable.
•Ensure you do 2 hours of quiet study at home every evening after school. Weekend sessions should last 3 hours per morning or afternoon session.
•Ensure you have a quiet, distraction free space to work.
•Ensure you have the tools you need at home – post-its, revision cards, pens, pencils, notebook, files, calculator etc.
•Ask your parents if there is something you would find helpful from them.
•Use a diary and empty your school bag every day in order to keep notes organised.
•Contact teachers if you are unsure to nip any problems in the bud immediately.
•Test yourself with exam style questions.
•Find out which of the various apps, websites and pods you can be using to assist your revision such as Sparx, GCSE Bitesize, etc...
•If you feel you aren’t coping with the pressures, talk to someone at school to ask for support.
•Ensure you have healthy snacks, water and get a good nights sleep!

Sparx Maths
At Alsop all students sit the Pearson Edexcel Mathematics GCSE. There are two tiers, Higher and Foundation. You will be informed by your teacher which tier you are entering, and all of your classwork and revision work will be specifically designed to help you succeed at this tier.
Every two weeks you complete a practice paper in class. You will be given a shadow paper to help you prepare for this. In addition to Sparx Maths Independent Revision you can use www.mathsgenie.co.uk – here you can access worked solutions for you shadow paper, and watch a full video walkthrough.
We suggest you attempt the full paper on your own, mark it with the worked solutions and then watch the video to help you complete the questions you got wrong.
You also have your Passport to Success Revision Booklet.
This Passport to Progress is your revision checklist for GCSE Maths. It shows all the topics you need to be confident with and helps you focus your revision on what will make the biggest difference in the time you have left.
Choose a topic and revise it using Sparx Maths (use the Sparx code), your notes, or practice questions. When you can answer questions correctly and independently, tick Box 1. Revisit the same topic on a different day and, if you are successful again, tick Box 2. Do this once more on another day and tick Box 3.
When all three boxes are ticked, highlight the row to show the topic is secure. This means you can rely on it in the exam, not just remember it once. If you struggle at any point, do not tick the box — go back, revise, and try again.
With limited time left, use this booklet to focus immediately on the topics that need the most attention, secure key knowledge, and make every revision session count.
