Project Brief:
• The A534 Crewe Road crosses the West Coast Main Line just north of Crewe Rail Station.
• This is the principal route into Crewe from the M6. The Crewe Arms roundabout to the east of the station is always congested.
• An alternative crossing of the West Coast Main Line is therefore required, and a design for this is required.
It can Be Over
It can be Under
The A534 Crewe Road crosses the West Coast Main Line just north of Crewe Rail Station. This is the principal route into Crewe from the M6. The Crewe Arms roundabout to the east of the station is always congested. An alternative crossing of the West Coast Main Line is therefore required.
The problem seems to be the section of Nantwich Road between the roundabout and the junction with Mill Street (Shown in blue) as it a single carriageway and in approximately 400m there are two busy pedestrian crossings and a signalled junction
The project is to:
Decide on a location of the crossing either bridge or tunnel. Depending upon your decision propose the materials to be used for the crossing.
1. Look at whether “over or under”
2. The materials to be used
3. cost of any options
4. Develop proposals to achieve biodiversity net gain for the project.
Design the new road layout on the approaches to the crossing, including cross sections of the road. Ensure that your design considers multiple road users' cars buses cycles and pedestrians. This website may be of help: https://nationalhighways.co.uk/suppliers/design-standards-and-specifications/
Research the use of a traffic model which show existing traffic routes and numbers and how this alters with the design. The following websites may be of help : https://traffic-simulation.de/roundabout.html And https://roadtraffic.dft.gov.uk/
