Ever find yourself wondering what city council members do, besides attending meetings? Our elected officials play an important role in shaping the future and vitality of the City of Woodhaven. Whether you are considering stepping into the public service realm or just want a better understanding of how things get done in your community, getting to know a council member’s duties can be enlightening. This article will highlight the responsibilities and time commitment involved with holding an elected office. Additionally, we will be giving you the opportunity to learn more about the individuals who are committed to making sure the city of Woodhaven continues to be an inviting community with a family-friendly charm.

City council members wear many hats. Besides sitting on the city council, each of them is also liaison to a city commission or board. The city council ensures that taxpayer money is spent effectively on services such as road maintenance, public parks, and emergency services.

“Over the next few issues of the “Profile” we will introduce you to the members of the Woodhaven City Council.”
– Lisa M. Lothringer

Representing constituents is at the heart of a council member’s responsibilities. They serve as the bridge between the residents and the municipality by voicing concerns and advocating for the residents’ needs. They best accomplish this by consistently remaining informed about local issues and making themselves accessible to the people they serve

Strategic planning for the city’s future is also part of their responsibilities. Keeping sight of short- and long-term goals and projects requires them to think ahead and make decisions that will benefit the community in the years to come.

Collaboration and communication are truly the keys to success, not just in local municipalities but in life. By working alongside other council members, city staff, and

local organizations, they can create strong partnerships that drive progress.

When stepping into the role of a city council member, one quickly realizes the substantial time commitment required. While often perceived as part-time, the schedule demands can be anything but. The role also involves being available for

evening and weekend meetings or events.

To effectively navigate the multifaceted role of a city council member, a diverse skill set is essential. Communication is by far the most important skill, enabling members to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively. Also important is the art of active listening, ensuring that the voices of constituents are genuinely heard and understood.

Effective council members inspire confidence and empower fellow council members and city staff to contribute their expertise. A collaborative leadership style encourages innovation and ensures that all voices are heard and valued.

Developing a strong connection with the community is a significant part of a city council member’s role. Building trust and connections with residents requires a proactive approach. Attending local events, from the Easter Egg Hunt to Hallowhaven, offers opportunities to interact with residents in informal settings. These interactions allow council members to gain firsthand insights into the concerns or aspirations of the residents and business community. •
